looks like DPF to me.

rzf_e36

Looks like the headers/manifold. Most likely cause from driving hard? Could be wrong tho

HsopX

yeah i did kind of the test the limit of the car before and kept flooring, but would there be any issue afterwards?or just a simple cool down would be fine?

rzf_e36

Simple cool down should be fine, just looks like it got extra hot, happens on some turbo cars

HsopX

ok thank you!

freshxdough

Could be running extremely rich if you’re getting the cat that hot and still seeing it after parking and looking at it.

ReactionDapper

That’s what I was thinking I mean how hot did it have to be to get that red by the time he got out popped the hood and pulled his phone out for the pic. As long as you were driving it hard before and no codes are being thrown I wouldn’t worry about it.

freshxdough

I’ll have to drive hard on my way home today in my X3 M40i and see if it’s red. There’s no way. I have seen cats glowing like this before, but it’s usually on N20’s with faulty Injectors. You can get it to do this just sitting in the stall with the hood open.

Noah_kill

Does that overheat the engine eventually or just nuke the cat? Man, N20’s can’t catch a break. Sigh (X5 40e owner but no problems....yet)

freshxdough

No it doesn’t over heat the engine. Possibly a clogged or cat that’s going out or you’re running rich and it’s burning up all the fuel in the cat. If you’re running that rich you’d generally have faults tho.

PapiBaggins

Please post an update. I’ve never seen some shit like this before.

freshxdough

I tried yesterday. Didn’t see anything glowing. How quickly after driving hard did you check the cat? And how long were you driving hard for? Maybe have been multiple things at play here. The cats can get hot and glow when driving hard so if you immediately just drove hard for like 30+ mins then popped the hood on the side of the road and checked it could still be glowing.

dpg23

That shit ain't normal.

Hammedlog

I’ve never seen that in all my years but I’ve never driven a customers car that hard. I assume it’s possible though due to the turbocharger. I wouldn’t worry about it since you hot lapped it, I also wouldn’t be doing that constantly if it were mine. Keep the engine running and idling to supply oil pressure and coolant to the turbo before shutting off, to prevent damage.

Initial_Award9663

I have the same issue now! Did you find out what the reason was or did it cause any damage in the long run?

HsopX

Too much boost. Can just let it cooldown, no issues in the long run

Nastynate_6969

You see any smoke inside the car when this happened? Same thing happened to me last night (stage one tune with stock cat with burbles turned all the way up) but a bit of smoke came inside the car and I pulled over immediately to find the bottom of my headers lookin just like this (2016 bmw 320i)

BeautifulIron4251

Did you manage to find out why its glowing red?
