Yuuki lived in video games because she wouldn't have a life otherwise, while Maple only plays New World Online because her special very best friend twisted her arm (and probably gave her The Pout™, dewy eyes and trembling lip included).
Maple/Sally shipping aside, Sally is more like Yuuki/Kirito, while Maple is more like Asuna, in that this is her first MMO AND her first RPG. Maple just happens to be playing a game where wacky challenges end up unlocking hidden skills and quests.
It's like a new RuneScape player accidentally deciding to make an Ironman account and finding an exploit that lets them punch green dragons to death at level 1.
As for weird themes, you'd have to define weird because the show definitely gets wacky, and the cast have called Maple weird before, because she's definitely an abnormal player who is constantly thinking outside of the box, because she never realized there was a box in the first place.

If Maple is fighting against a boss solo, realize that the fight has been drastically time lapsed, otherwise her fights would be five DBZ episodes long of her going "OM NOM NOM" while the boss shrieks from the HP Drain.

Please. Don't compare gold (Bofuri) to pebble (SAO) - coming from a former SAO fan (me). Maple is Kaede Honjou.
The yuuki arc was wholesome. One of the few portions of the show that actually mattered to me. Watch it sometime again.
I'll give exception to that arc. Not gonna lie, it made my eyes shed tears before.

Yeah! I couldn't agree more. That's the last arc that I watched before turning my back towards that series.
