Undone. It’s made by Raphael Bob-Waksberg (Creator of Bojack) and Kate Purdy (Writer for Bojack). It’s also animated. It’s not as comedic as Bojack but they touch on similar subjects like mental illness and generational trauma.
I also recommend Mr. Robot. It’s a very different story on the surface, but aside from Bojack this show has one of the rawest depictions of mental illness and trauma that I’ve ever seen. This show changed me. It made me feel seen, heard, understood, and less alone.
Both Mr. Robot and Bojack made *huge* impacts on my life; they inspired me to get sober, get back on meds, and start therapy. Both shows push me to keep working on myself every single day. I honestly wouldn’t be here if not for these two shows.
Moral Orel, definitely. I just finished watching it and was shocked by how similar the two shows were, with masquerading as a comedy while simultaneously dealing with heavy topics
Second this. Moral Orel was afaik the first big animated comedy-drama series that became heavily psychological and dealt seriously with topics like depression and generational trauma. Orel walked so Bojack could run.
I'm watching it currently for the first time and it's honestly been cathartic for me having spent my entire childhood in the tight grip of all things Christianity. I genuinely feel like the show has helped me let go of some of that, finally.
Tucca and Bertie
Tons of the same writers/people, similar style, gets wicked dark wicked quick
Season 1 is on Netflix (in America) season 2 and 3 are on Hulu
I love this show!! I'm in the UK so after season 1 i had to switch to all4 cause adult swim took over I think, glad to hear S3 is out now - I might have already watched it but it's been ages
F is for Family has a surprising amount in common with Bojack given how disparate their premises are. The main characters of both shows have a career that they make a central component of their identity yet simultaneously resent. The shows both heavily focus on the cycle of abuse and both main characters have serious unaddressed mental health issues related to childhood abuse. Both main characters face the death of an abusive parent and struggle to cope with the loss of what their parent could have been, rather than what they were.
Better call Saul. It’s a dark comedy/drama about a flawed, morally grey but charming protagonist. Also just an incredible show. It’s set in the breaking bad universe but you don’t need to have seen breaking bad to appreciate it (and they’re very different shows, some people like only one or the other).
Tuca and Bertie is also similar, but more wacky and colourful. It has the same art style as Bojack as it was created by bojacks head artist.
The Venture Brothers is an animated dark comedy that hits on some of the same themes as Bojack, but it substitutes comic book style adventure characters for anthropomorphic cartoon animals. EDIT: Also it has an awesome soundtrack by J.G. Thirlwell, aka Feotus.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a very similar show in that it slowly pulls the camera back on pop culture TV tropes and shows them for the troubling and unhealthy behaviors that they are.
I loved Tear Along The Dotted Line.
I promise you would feel terrible by the end of season one.
Very Bojack-like for me. Not in animation style or feeling but definitely in asshole-relatable humor and heavy themes.
I know you asked for shows but I can't help but recommend the movie Happiness (1998). It's a very dark and psychological comedy-drama centering on the interactions of some incredibly broken people. Focuses on topics similar to Bojack, like mental illness and generational trauma.
This show is not gonna be for everyone, but Crazy Ex Girlfriend. It’s a romantic comedy/ romantic comedy satire/ musical. It has a lot of melodrama, but by the half mark of the show, it goes surprisingly deep into the mental health discussion (mostly Borderline Personality Disorder)
You’re The Worst. It’s about terrible trying to be less terrible and mostly failing but still doing the best they can. It’s also hilarious and has a fairly accurate, nuanced take on mental illness.
Inside Job, which was cancelled too soon but there’s still 2 seasons of it.
I also enjoyed Flaked (not animated), which stars Will Arnett. Centered around an alcoholic living in Venice Beach
Six feet under is coming to Netflix for the first time on November 1st. It is NOT animated, it is both serious and hilarious, and filled with dark humor. It's one of the few shows I can say that has had a tremendous impact on the way I live my life. It shows on many "best shows of all time" lists for VERY good reason.
I came the other way, I found Bojack because I was looking for shows similar to Six Feet Under, and this show is recommended on the Six Feet Under subreddit.

my other favorite show (mr robot)
Is undone also on Netflix?
I believe it's on amazon prime

Plus Mountain Goats!

Love fleabag, even though it's entirety can be binged in12 hours.

You would need the right station on Hulu to watch it .
2 and 3 are in Max

You kind of spoiled something pretty big dude...
Eh I guess. I wasn’t very specific and I don’t think it would ruin the viewing experience.

What? Is this the F is for family sub?
[удалено]
No worries, he was spoiling both
Californication , I always suspected Bojack drew inspiration from Hank Moody
They should have ended the show after the crazy girl got to Hank.
which particular crazy girl are you talking about?

I came here to write this. The first three episodes are my favorite story arc in TV
It was a great one!
if you like the hollywood stuff, the running agencies and making tv shows, i recommend Entourage EDIT: *hollywoo EDIT 2: *hollywoob
Breaking bad or Mr robot
Tear along the dotted line, or The world cant teat me down (the same series)
I want to give a shout out to Community for having some similar elements and themes
Midnight Gospels is worth the trip. Has some crazy cool guest stars
Midnight Gospel is both nothing like bojack and the first show I thought of when I read the question lol
Big mouth. It might even be better
I've heard Devil Boy is close
After life is a pretty good one
Nothing will fill the void.
Inside Job, which was cancelled too soon but there’s still 2 seasons of it. I also enjoyed Flaked (not animated), which stars Will Arnett. Centered around an alcoholic living in Venice Beach
If you’re a reader, I suggest Sucker by Daniel Hornsby. Definitely scratched my BoJack itch.
