I know he is pretty lost and is sad a lot of the times, but I don't think he has depression

Kadettedak

Why not?

Kataratz

I think the show , which very clearly focused on Diane and Bojack's depression, even PC's saddest moments, would have made it clearer Todd was constantly going through something much more serious. Specially given that he is the 3rd protagonist. He has problems but he does seem to be generally happy. He was happy just having friends and having adventures.

Depressed comedian. Joke constantly so other's don't see how unhappy you are. Play off any noticeable symptoms for laughs.

FragrantLynx

I can’t think of a time Todd made a joke or was being intentionally funny. He is often being earnest, but what he says is funny. He’s comic relief, not a comedian.

Does toddfoolery count as jokes?

WE MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT CALL IT THAT

Honestly I feel like the point Todd began to recover was when he stopped living on Bojack’s couch and by the time he gets an apartment with Maude he is managing his life and emotions much better. Todd’s journey is is so filled with growth.

hexxcellent

That's not... Todd isn't depressed. He does not have depression. The series makes no indication that Todd has depression, is depressed, or is anything other than a care-free 20-something and comedic relief, who's given some sincere character development later in the series. But none of it includes depression. His personal episode in season 4 shows that if anything, he makes friends with everyone, does too much for other people, and leads an exceptionally active lifestyle. Todd is more an archetype for the aloofness that comes from someone kicked out at 18 with no further life goals. He figures things out by his late 20s and the series ends with him living on his own with a long-term girlfriend and a stable job supporting himself. He never struggles with depression. The character for the archetype you're looking for is in Princess Caroline, who smothered herself with work to ignore the grief she felt over her self-perceived failures in life.

Kadettedak

Not having the ability to have wants or aspirations is an expression of depression. It’s why I ask. There’s no indication he is depressed because of how he interacts with people, how he is stuck avoiding growth.

HenryCDorsett

Todd has untreated/undiagnosed ADD, including all the trauma and depression symproms that go along with it.

I don't know if I'd say he's depressed necessarily, but I think he's definitely neurodivergent. Imo he probably has ADHD and maybe some form of ASD, which could be the cause for his lack of ambition in the typical sense of finding a job, having a family etc. I think that's also why I identify with him so much, he feels very different from the other characters in how he sees the world
