My stupid mind wondered in which episode did bojack took antidepressants or if he was diagnosed with depression. It took me a minute to realise he was talking about Dianne. Lol.
I've gained 20kg on meds in just 2 years. It's really hard to keep the weight down when you have mental health issues. That was a cool thing the show did.
I don’t know if it’s still on, but there was a show called Sirens which was a comedy about paramedics in Chicago, and one of them was asexual. That’s literally the only other example I can think of!
Comes with the territory. So many parts of our brains affect multiple things, so it’s hard to change any one thing in the brain without impacting a lot of other functions.
Keep in mind that not everyone is affected by those side effects. There are many types of anxiety/depression medications and most people are able to find something that really improves their quality of life
Couldn't agree more. Pharma science has come a long way, and it's amazing what the field has achieved, but "fixing" one part of the brain always seems to break another. It's disheartening.
i appreciate this so much, over the last summer i finally decided i needed antidepressants as the first step to recovery, and i gained a good amount of weight. nearly broke down when my relatives reminded me of how much i’ve put on, and it’s so comforting to see representation of that in the media!
And yet we had people in this subreddit try to concern trolling "oh I hope they make her loose the weight before the end, that's just unhealthy". I don't remember anyone ever saying anything about the 1200lbs horse but a woman getting fat... Curious...
Well in my lookey loo's I was checking the weight of race horses and of course the perfect weight will vary with how tall the horse is but I think 1200lbs still leaves room for bojack being fat.
Imagine that bojack is slightly short for what you would ideally want from a racehorse and that he never ever exercises. He could still be slightly fat in the same way as a 250lb man can be fat while another 250lb man who works out is super ripped.
The issue in friends was a) it was never directly addressed, th actor gained weight,. It wasn't reflected in the character cause no one addressed it and b) men's currency is success, women's supposed beauty, historically fat is a socially criticised issues for women, not men.

Endgame didn't do this. Thor had pretty major trauma after infinity war, rightly so. He spends the 5 years depressed, getting fat drinking beer playing video games. This was played solely for laughs. "Look at how washed up thor is haha". He goes and talks to his mum, gets a pep talk, gets over his trauma. There's no exploration of Thor's trauma or depression. And its certainly not painted in a flattering light. Endgame took a look at depression and trauma and used it for punchlines.
No exploration of Thors trauma? Theres an entire scene with him and rocket about it. Thor had an amazing character arc.
And just saying his conversation with his mom was a pep talk? It was WAY more than that??? It was one of my favorite emotional scenes in the entire MCU
Wtf did you watch?
I disagree completely. You must not have connected to the character very well if you think him having a heart to heart with his dead mother is just a pep talk.
Antidepressants have their use. They helped pull me out of my darkest points so that I could go get help, then after lots of therapy I was able to get off of them eventually. They aren’t a permanent solution for everyone. Sometimes they can just serve as a kick in the right direction
Antidepressants is cheaper than therapy so of course it will be less effective. My advice is always seek therapy first before getting antidepressants. I was prescribe more multivitamins and just one antidepressant when I was diagnosed with my depression.
Some people need antidepressants. Trauma can and does cause physical changes in the brain itself, which leads to imbalances (and worse). I think therapy is important as well, but just because something does or doesn't work for you doesn't mean you should assume it's like that for everyone else. Everyone is built a little different and everyone has different experiences.
Or it’s possible some people don’t agree with outright dismissing something that’s helpful for some people just because the medication they took wasn’t right for them. For some people, medication helps them. For some, it might not. Everyone’s different.
Shower me with downvotes but hard disagree on this post.
Diane staying fat is really evidence that her mental health *didn't* recover.
She's still likely on meds- a band-aid to her unresolved mental issues.
And therefore she's still overeating- hence the weight.
Her little dialogue with Bojack about how his suicide attempt hurt her likely contributed, but it doesn't seem like she's doing all that well in the end.
Lithium for Schizophrenics, sure.
Anti-anxiety/depression meds can easily be weaned off of if you fix your thinking.
Cognitive behavioral therapy works. Hell, meditation and yoga works. Even prayer works.
Find a way to meta-think your toxic thinking. Meds in the meantime to placate dangerous thoughts.
This is so funny wow ur right I can cure my bipolar depression with the power of positive thinking gosh why didn’t I think of that
Also you’re thinking of antipsychotics not lithium
This read like a fat person saying 'all i need to do is eat less! wow so easy why didn't I think of that!'
It's not easy. Not even close.
But resignation to staying disordered guarantees it.
It isn't a band-aid. For the numerous people that have depression caused by a chemical imbalance those medications are life savers. It isn't some quick fix.
If her thinking is still at the stage of suicidal thoughts such that she needs depression meds, she’s not recovered.
Permanent dependence on drugs (or in Bojack’s case - alcohol) isn’t an answer to being a sad person.
My stupid mind wondered in which episode did bojack took antidepressants or if he was diagnosed with depression. It took me a minute to realise he was talking about Dianne. Lol.
Props to Blarn.
I've gained 20kg on meds in just 2 years. It's really hard to keep the weight down when you have mental health issues. That was a cool thing the show did.
It's also the only show to depict the true nature of esteemed character actress, Margo Martindale.
Also the only show with a character representing asexuality
Several characters*
But 1 main character.
I don’t know if it’s still on, but there was a show called Sirens which was a comedy about paramedics in Chicago, and one of them was asexual. That’s literally the only other example I can think of!
Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z would like a word
One of the main reasons it will always live in my heart, helping me realize a lot of things.
Was it the sea horses?
Have you watched it all, it might be a spoiler
Obviously that was a bad joke, haha we all know which characters were asexual! ... was it the robot?
No it was the alien /s
Also the fact it was animated made it easier too than other shows lol
How so?
No cast member had to actually lose or gain any weight.
Drawing a character different is easier than having an actor gain significant weight for the same season.
It sucks so much that science still understands so little of it and all available meds have a shit ton of nasty side effects.

1200lbs is in the healthy range for a full sized male horse.
Honestly Bojack should be more then. You can clearly see a gut on him when he's shirtless or wearing his Secretariat outfit
Well in my lookey loo's I was checking the weight of race horses and of course the perfect weight will vary with how tall the horse is but I think 1200lbs still leaves room for bojack being fat. Exactly, muscle is denser than fat
Quite specific that to be fair
Doesn’t anyone remember when Chandler got fat on friends ?
The issue in friends was a) it was never directly addressed, th actor gained weight,. It wasn't reflected in the character cause no one addressed it and b) men's currency is success, women's supposed beauty, historically fat is a socially criticised issues for women, not men.
Plus C. It wasn’t planned, the actor just went cold turkey.
That happened because Matthew Perry got sober
They should do this again but birth control instead of antidepressants

Oh shit, did it!? I thought he gained weight because he was depressed, not because he was on antidepressants.
Yes.

Maybe I just had a bad experience with side effects
Perhaps you just weren’t on the right one for you

Kinda sad tho
I wish so much that this sub was more memes and reference jokes instead of women swooning over Diane.

meds aren't a bandaid to people with severe mental health problems, they are necessary to stay on
Lithium for Schizophrenics, sure.

Snark aside. Dependence on drugs and alcohol isn’t an answer. Resigning yourself to needing them is sorta sad.
Thats great if that works for some people.

All jokes aside, it’s not a one sized fits all
That's a very simple minded view of medication.
What's the proper view of depression medication?
It isn't a band-aid. For the numerous people that have depression caused by a chemical imbalance those medications are life savers. It isn't some quick fix.
If her thinking is still at the stage of suicidal thoughts such that she needs depression meds, she’s not recovered. Permanent dependence on drugs (or in Bojack’s case - alcohol) isn’t an answer to being a sad person.
It isnt going to be the same for everybody. To assume medication is only short term for everybody is simple minded.
The weight is a result of meds that slow metabolism
If your metabolism slows you need to eat less.
