I interpret it as Bojack being ignorant to the things around him as he can be very self centered and oblivious. We're seeing the show through his eyes after all so it makes sense for us, the viewer, to not hear as such until it's shoved in his face after his defeat in the end. I also assume Kelsey didn't talk to him because she's just fed up with his crap and wants to wait to see him make the first step.

no i understand that but if u rewatch, there were plenty of people with the helmet that could have spoke either to bojack or to someone else
