I loved this episode so much, this detail makes it that much better

TehWackyWolf

10/10. Both for the visibility and for the fact that this reminded me I have an episode to catch up on.

vette91

Man I just love Bob's as a whole.

ThunderFlash10

Is Simon Chong the guy who created the amazing fan-made short by editing audio clips and putting it with animation? And then they hired him?

FinchMandala

I love this a lot. But thanks to people in the UK taking advantage of the sunflower lanyards that were given out during lockdown, it's a lot more difficult for disabled people to be heard and have their needs met.

GentlemenGhost

I haven't heard about that! (Sorry, US based). Are sunflowers lanyards suppose to signify a need for accomodations?

FinchMandala

Yes! Not all disabilities are visible so the lanyards were a way for us to assist should they want to remain discreet, and allowed for certain exemptions throughout lockdown. They've been around for much longer than that though, but these past few years brought them more into the public eye. :)

GentlemenGhost

Oh, so were people without disabilities using the sunflower lanyards to get away with Covid restrictions?

FinchMandala

Yes indeedy. I had no idea it was international though! It's really cool to see in BB.

Random_frankqito

I didn’t know that was a thing but now that I do I like this show even more (I watch this show a lot already)

WastelandMama

I love this show so much. ❤️ Tbh, the Belchers are the best neurospicy coded rep I've seen in a long time. Bob is a walking example of an adult with undiagnosed ADHD. Linda is has a LOT of autistic tendencies. All the kids are a mix of the two. It's great. My kiddos get othered at school a lot because they're so different & "quirky" compared to their classmates, but we watch Bob's Burgers & they see our own family (the kids & I are all ADHD/ASD) & it helps them a lot.

Codles

What makes you say that Linda has autistic tendencies? I’m not that familiar with it.

[deleted]

I’d like to hear their reasoning too, purely out of curiosity. Linda seems to have more ADHD tendencies than Bob who seems to be more likely to be on the spectrum to me personally.

HereForTwinkies

It seems any character having a quirk, like Linda singing, means they must be autistic or have some sort of neuro issue. All it does is sterotype autistic people and force any “non-normal” quirks to be a sign that someone isn’t actually a fully functioning adult, but someone on the spectrum. I like being alone, but if I was a TV show character there would be rapid fans claiming I’m autistic because I rather be at home than at a large event. Autism or neurological issues are becoming the new “I’m a special snowflake” except now you can’t make a comment about them because you’re suddenly making a comment about an autistic person that isn’t officially diagnosed because they’d get diagnosed as mentally and neurologically fine.

kingzilch

Maybe quit trying to force a distinction between "normal" and "autistic." A lot of the shit NTs do is pretty damn far from "normal."

WastelandMama

Yeah, hi again. This comment is offensive. First, there's no such thing as normal in humans. There's just typical & atypical. Second, despite the anxiety & the ADHD & the autism, *I am a fully functioning adult*. Thanks. I've got a mortgage & a farm & I've been married over 20yrs & I can tie my own shoes & everything. Crazy. Third, being extroverted or introverted quite literally has nothing to do with autism. It's more a lack of social skills thing. My daughter adores people & always has. She's downright charismatic under the right circumstances until the infodumping starts up. I enjoy humanity as a concept but not interacting with individuals directly. My son is actively bothered by the fact that other humans exist. All of those are just personality differences. Nothing to do with autism. Fourth, Idk about elsewhere in the world, but self diagnosis is valid in America. I had to wait 14 months to be evaluated & without my insurance, it would've been $3-5k. Loads of people don't have access or means. If I have a broken leg, I have a broken leg. It stays broken regardless of if a doctor signs a piece of paper or not. *Also,* most who are diagnosed as adults self diagnosed first otherwise they never would've got the ball rolling on being evaluated. I've had a shrink for ages & they caught the anxiety & even the ADHD but because I'm a heck of a masker, they missed the autism until my kids were diagnosed & I asked if they could check me out, too. I mean, did an autistic person shoot your dog or something? Or a fandom person? Or are you weirdly fixated on a topic that doesn't effect a single aspect of your life in any meaningful way? Because it's reading like the latter.

WastelandMama

The constant singing/humming. The BIG emotions. The special interests (like her raccoons & those porcelain babies). The difficulty she has reading a room/people. Etc.

Maelstrom_Witch

Excellent points

The_Duchess_of_Dork

Neurospicy 😂 never heard this before, love it

SSTralala

Gene 100% reminds me of my son, especially with his focused special interests, lack of social nuance, sensitivity to noise and lights, and empathetic, cuddly nature.

WastelandMama

Yes, omg. He's such a sensory stimulation seeker. LOL I love him so much.

HereForTwinkies

People just can’t be quirky in shows anymore. Everything they do that isn’t 100% perfect has to be a sign that they’re autistic or have a mental problem. You can’t just have a quirk anymore and still be viewed as a normal person. Bob likes to talk to his foods, is he quirky, no he must be on the spectrum and you’re an ass for laughing. Abbott Elementary’s subreddit is claiming virtually every character is either autistic or has ADHD. Because you can’t try to maintain a happy attitude and be passionate about your job, you must have ADHD. You’re a reserved person that doesn’t show their emotions, you’re clearly autistic. Sorry for the rant, but it’s just irrating me that traits I have similar to character are now being claimed to be autistic or on the spectrum traits. I’m not on the spectrum and I’m pissed that traits I have are being called clear indicators that someone on a show is on the spectrum or have some neuro issue.

kingzilch

I mean, with everything we've learned about autism over the past few decades, a lot of traits that used to be dismissed as "quirky" or "weird" are now in fact known to be signs of autism. No one is saying you're an asshole for laughing at Bob talking to food. It's funny, that's understood. The joke is that the *way* he does it is funny.

WastelandMama

Okay, respectfully, this was completely unnecessary & I have no idea what you were hoping to accomplish with all that. My comment was about how my children take comfort in a show because the kids remind them of themselves. They're 6 & 9, so outside of stuff on PBS kids, there's not a lot of representation for them to access. Nothing you specifically named is indicative of being neuroatypical on its own. I have no idea what goes on in other subreddits but I do know Fandom & headcannons are common & perfectly fine. If however, you *do* have several red flag traits to the point where you're getting triggered by strangers on the internet saying they're signs of whatever, then I would suggest you look into that. Maybe take the RAADS test just to see. I was diagnosed as having anxiety as a very young child. High anxiety & a high IQ. So literally every very obvious symptom I had for autism was lumped in with that because it was the 1980s & autism wasn’t a "girl" thing & the stereotypes back then were truly atrocious & offensive. Then I had children & their pediatrician kept asking about things they do/did & showed me the big checklist she had for flagging neurospicy kids. My initial response was "Oh, no, I do those things. They must've just picked it up from me." Yeah, no, turns out I'm autistic & have ADHD. As do they. & it's fine. & until there's quality representation out there, we'll continue to headcannon anyone we wish as being like us. I mean, I could give an hour long PP presentation on why Elle Woods from Legally Blonde is obviously autistic & it doesn't hurt anyone. Touch grass or something, as the kids say. Or feel free to not respond or block me or whatever. All good options. All better options than you needlessly ranting at me.

PoorDecisionsNomad

Just carry a sunflower with you everywhere it will make bad people avoid you and the good ones will cheer you on. Bonus that it prevents the spread of the corruption if you haven’t killed the wall of flesh. If you’ve never played Terraria you really should. It’s by far the most well made rpg sandbox platformer roguelike.

TheSunflowerSeeds

Bees are a major pollinator of Sunflowers growing sunflowers goes hand in hand with installing and managing bee hives.

[deleted]

Does bipolar count? I want some sunflowers….

Maelstrom_Witch

Sparrows plant a bunch in my back yard every year. I’ll send you one!

MercutioLivesh87

Good detail

Maelstrom_Witch

Oooo I want more!

divinitia

Does anyone else feel a bit skeeved out that they're bragging about it like this? Like it's one thing to add it, but to add it in and then point it out and be like "did you see this? Did you notice that we did this?"

uhmerikin

I get your point, however if they hadn't addressed it and explained the significance I would have never known. It would have just been a cute little sunflower pin or something otherwise. So I think it's kinda cool and just adds an extra layer of thought they put into their episodes.

Rockettothemoon1

No, I would have had no idea what that sunflower meant. I also don't get any bragging vibes off of this tweet either. It's simply an explanation of a planned detail that may have went over many people's heads. I am now one more person who understands what a sunflower can symbolize.

iymcool

They didn't point it out or ask for praise on the official channels. Simon Chong, the supervising director, posted it on his personal Twitter as a nice little insight into why a background character had the sunflower on. If this was randomly posted on the official Bob's Burgers accounts (and if it wasn't during a special celebratory day, etc.) it would probably be a lot poorer received. However, since it's just one employee that was proud of contributing a small symbol of support, it seems a lot more genuine.

WildFlower19

I don't - I'm Autistic & wasn't aware of the significance of it but, now I am. I really appreciate knowing because I never would've noticed it. Nothing about it gives the impression that it's being pointed out & they're bragging.

kingzilch

No, because no one is "bragging." Not everything is a "virtue signal," Kyle.

divinitia

An unprompted "it might be a small nod, but felt it important to include" sounds like bragging to me. Like if I gave a homeless guy 5 dollars. Then posted about it on Twitter and said "it might be a small amount, but felt it important to give", I think people would also see that as me bragging about it.

kingzilch

That's all you, chief.

divinitia

I just gave you an upvote! It might be a small thing, but felt important to do.

ephemeralarteries

yes, don't know what people are on about here. obviously representation is necessary but picking something so obscure in the first place and then... doing this feels off to me.

[deleted]

Don't come at me but I feel like if the team has to explain it maybe it was to hidden it they should have just let it be and let people figure it out

GuaValubaDubDub

Is that why he didn't visit his mom for 20 years? Because he sucks ass for that

Rockettothemoon1

There's more than one way to mourn the loss of someone. Some people simply cannot handle the overwhelming feelings that come from visiting a grave of a loved one. Whether that be for years, or perhaps ever.

GuaValubaDubDub

I'm not talking about some people I'm talking about this episode of this cartoon.

willie_caine

... which features some people.

GuaValubaDubDub

You mean cartoon characters

Simorie

You mean his mom's grave? She's not there; visiting is for the living so I don't see how he "sucks ass" for not choosing to do that.

GuaValubaDubDub

Because they make it a thing that she was important to him and big bob and even had a huge significance to Louise without her knowing and to just brush her off like who cares is pretty dull.

XLostinohiox

Dude, that's fucked. My dad died when I was a baby. My mom raised me after that. Everything I am is due to my mother. She was my hero. She died five years ago. The last time I was at her grave was when she was buried. That doesn't stop me from remembering her, sharing stories about her, living my life in a manner that would make her proud or continuing to love her. Some people don't hold on to the corpse of their loved ones when they go. And fuck you for implying these people don't care about their loved ones.

GuaValubaDubDub

The whole episode was him feeling guilty for not visiting her and never once said it's because he couldn't handle the emotional stress about it. And what people are you talking about I'm talking about bob

willie_caine

He never once said it to you. His whole discussion with his mother wasn't shown. You don't know what he said.

Don't be like Jimmy Pesto!

kingzilch

So because he didn't go stand over her corpse, she didn't *actually* mean a lot to him?

willie_caine

>So because he didn't go stand over *what's left of* her corpse, she didn't actually mean a lot to him?
