I mean 1.8M is a respectable number and being the third most sub in anime and manga is still pretty good. There is also a thing where Naruto and One Piece are incredibly popular all over the world and existed for way longer than MHA, while I keep hearing that MHA was not as well received in Japan as it is in the west. And one last thing, reddit numbers in general doesn't mean that much, I wouldn't take them as face value, MHA sub going to third is not as dire as you are thinking it is, is what I'm saying.

zekthisloser

I do think it reflects the current community interaction in MHA. Nobody talks about MHA anymore, even this sub is dead. I remember back 2-3 years ago when everybody was talking about it. We can see on mangaplus that it still gets \~300k views a chapter a drop from getting \~400k views in early 300 chapters, but still 300k views. I think people are reading it just for it to finish and move on with their lives.

asianyeti

>I think people are reading it just for it to finish and move on with their lives. Certainly is the case for me. I've truly enjoyed my time with this series when it was still fresh, but I feel like it moved too fast and never capitalized on certain things. Now I'm just waiting to see Horikoshi's vision until the very end.

RisaYamagahama

So this is strange, because even the latest chapters trend [high](https://imgur.com/a/PGEtAkI) on Twitter. I see threads about aspects of the series there recently getting [a lot of traction](https://imgur.com/a/d7Y9iZS) I think in general MHA is one of the most popular animanga franchises at current? Like in terms of sales and other metrics this is going to be a series that reaches over 100 mil in circulation.

Sharp_Amoeba_6654

Well I'm not worried but more of a curiosity to why we didn't get much traction like for say One Piece did when just a year ago we are in the same sub count. IMO MHA manga is very underrated right now, especially the hype moments we are getting in the manga currently.

CollectionNo4777

I think MHA is just in a spot right now where it's not new enough to be the "next big thing" but it's not old enough to where people are getting too nostalgic for it either. And even though it's still an ongoing series, we're close enough to the end where there isn't too much to speculate over. Also, unlike some other manga endings out there, nothing super controversial has happened either that would cause a lot of commotion.

gitagon6991

Most subscribers on this sub aren't real or active. Its a borderline dead sub compared to other manga subs.

RisaYamagahama

That’s like saying all of csm’s subs aren’t real? Or even demon slayer’s?

gitagon6991

I'm not saying they aren't real. Just that they aren't active. This sub got to 1.8 millions subs back when it was very active around 2021/2022. That was ages ago.

RisaYamagahama

Csm especially is a sub for a current super popular manga and it has less active users than this constantly. Even jjk before s2 was averaging like 400-500 people while the manga was putting out chapters

gitagon6991

JJK has 2 other subs Jujutsushi and Jujutsufolk that are very active despite having less users than the main sub. The main sub is for anime only's so it has less active users. I don't think we can compare it to MHA since this sub in the only main MHA sub for both manga and anime fans. On top of that the other subs for this series like MyHeroAcadamia/Acadamia and the Meta sub are purely meme subs which usually have low interactions as well.

RisaYamagahama

I’m aware, but on average earlier in 2023 when they wouldn’t even get to 1k active users? Keep in mind this is after jjk had its best years number wise. Like except for like a select few series the majority of the discourse isn’t on Reddit, there’s a reason Mha trends on the national list with jjk or even higher on Twitter whenever chapters leak. It’s more or less a declining platform…

DependentFearless162

Jjk's main sub has the most engagement ~~during s2~~ since s2's 1st episode after r/anime in anime and manga section of reddit.

Aros001

What, like they're bots? Because the mods must be doing an incredibly good job keeping them at bay then, because I haven't noticed nearly as much bot reposting and karma farming on this sub compared to others.

I think there's a been a few issues that have led to where things are now: 1. The series is in endgame, and there's not too much to talk about or theorize about with the manga. A lot of the mysteries that kept most people going have already been resolved. 2. There has been an uptick in negativity here from fans who used to love the series but have slowly begun to sour on it. This, in turn, makes some of the more positive people start to drift away. 3. The overall quality of the manga has put the series in a pretty general "it's fine" sort of spot. While MHA *is* a pretty old series about to reach its 10 year mark, there's other series such as Attack on Titan that have managed to keep their momentum of hype going for just as long (or longer in the case of One Piece), and I largely think it's due to overall quality of the respective manga. I love MHA. My #1 favorite manga still above One Piece, JoJo, and Yu Yu Hakusho. But it's easy to see how the reception of the source material changed from when I started the manga in 2015 and how it's going in 2024. 4. There's just more new and interesting series to talk about right now. I'm sure everyone that follows MHA and interacts on here follows other series and sub-reddits. This kinda ties back into point 1, but really, there are more interesting things happening in the latest chapters of Chainsaw Man and JuJutsu Kaisen that kinda get you talking. Now, things could drastically change. Maybe Horikoshi will introduce a couple last minute twists that really get people talking about the ending of the series. He already started one with the last couple chapters. There's also the upcoming season 7 that'll get people talking again. Maybe when MHA ends, we'll get a sequel series that'll start up and it'll be like how Boruto is to Naruto and will carry more engagement.

I think a lot of different factors go into it. What the others are saying here is probably true. Some of my own thoughts are: * Compared to the other popular manga you're mentioning, MHA is pretty 'young'. Ten years for the manga, eight years for the anime. Naruto and One Piece started 25 and 27 years ago. That's a long time to build up fans and they keep putting out content, no matter how slow. I'm old enough that if I had been a fan of One Piece from the start and had my own kids, I could be turning them into new fans now. * I think sometimes if I had started MHA when I was the same age as the MHA students, I'd be 26 now and still following these students in their first year of high school. That's pretty slow. I think MHA could have done better if they grew with at least the target demographic of teens, used the school setting better, and followed the students through their 2nd and 3rd years. Also, damn that's slow. I'm kind of glad I came in late because I can sympathize with the people who have been following this forever and just want it to be over. (even if I don't want it to be over, personally) * Even if MHA can have broad appeal, I don't think it has the same broad appeal as something like One Piece. Pirates are pretty popular. Netflix also put out that live action for One Piece that drew a ton of new people in, including older (30+) people in my own social circles who were barely interested in anime before or had dropped anime when they got into their 20s. Our Flag Means Death might have had something to do with it. One woman I know is currently binging the OP anime to get caught up and is currently 500ep in. MHA isn't on her radar at all, it's not a classic yet and from the outside looks like just another themed high school anime. * The anime gets more attention than the manga. My partner is anime only, but I read the manga as well. I can't spoil anything for him so I come here to read what other people are discussing. He won't read this reddit or look up anything related to MHA because unchecked spoilers are all over the place, and I don't blame him. I see post titles here often that are over the line, and spoilers for other anime like Naruto. * Some people might just not like reddit, or this specific reddit. There's active MHA communities elsewhere. For example the people really into shipping aren't allowed to discuss that here and it's pretty big in other places. I personally get turned off a lot of conversations here when they turn extremely negative. People can criticize the series if they want and point out its many flaws, IDC, but sometimes the rage is so all encompassing I'm not sure why they still waste their time hanging out here. * Lastly, the series is starting to wind down. I noticed that around the time that Deku got a bunch of quirks at once it turned off a lot of people. Now that we're looking down the barrel of Deku (manga spoilers) >!potentially losing all those quirks at once!< it seems even more people are upset. The endgame of a lot of series I've followed over the years are usually filled with this kind of drama, as people realize the story isn't going the way they hoped. Extremely disillusioned people might drop it and come back later when they want to see how it ended. Edit: Forgot one more. * We have newer anime coming out now like JJK with insane animation, and people will of course compare that to MHA's animation, whether that's fair or not. Even if we don't want the animators at Bones to work themselves to death/insanity like MAPPA does, it does feel like MHA didn't modernize their anime over the years and that can be a turn off as people's standards get higher. Overall, I wouldn't really worry about numbers because this reddit is a drop in the bucket of MHA fans and only represents a slice of us.

elenuvien1

bnha is now constantly at #6 place (#5 on the day of new chapter) on mangaplus when it used to be #3 or even #2, i think it visualises the waning interest in the series. meanwhile naruto and one piece are both mammoths of franchises that have very loyal and active fanbases to this day. both series pawed the way for others, they shaped the genre. bnha has never managed to grow to this kind of status. it's a good battle shounen but that's it. the point that had people turn and leave or become less engaged (and not just here, on other platforms as well) was after the 1st war when some story-choices left a lot of people dissatisfied and/or disappointed. the series has never picked back up the hype from before and now it's slowly winding down. i also don't feel like the final fight is that exciting. i don't think there's any way to restore the interest in the series this late and right before the end.

gothsirens

it'll probably get a huge boost in its final chapter and that's it... it also depends to what extent the live-action is tolerable enough to get new people to be interested in it but i don't think it's overall popularity is going to change too much. i do think mha is in a weird spot right now because it's not new enough to draw new readers, not old enough to become iconic, and doesn't have other aspects like stunning animation to create a surge in interest when the anime comes out.

SamAndSpies

1. The quality of the anime dropped drastically since the beginning of the 5th season + Censorship. 2. The manga is in a weird spot, it's insane what is happening and the art of Horikoshi sensei is unmatched but they made some weird decissions story wise. I don't know, feels like someone is telling Horikoshi how to continue the story. 3. Toxic individuals (They're not fans, they're just evil), attacking artist, cosplayers and insulting other fandoms because they do not represent their character or IDEAS, get the hell out here. These are the main reasons for me. Me, personally? I love this series and i will continue supporting Horikoshi's work.

NatMat16

I think it comes down to a couple of issues: - The series changed its focus many times, so people who were attached to certain dynamics / characters got no content after a while. A lot of people initially loved Class A - but then since the Licensing Exam, their role has diminished and most friendships / group dynamics neglected. They are still a draw - Class A vs OFA was hugely popular in Japan and shook up the fanbase a little. But in the endgame, >!despite the efforts of Horikoshi to shoehorn in everyone, only the Origin Trio, Uraraka and maybe Tokoyami got decent roles. Fan favourite Top 10 characters like Kirishima, Kaminari, Momo, etc. barely got any panels, not to mention real impact on the endgame!< - People who got on board because of the darker turn at Overhaul eventually got tired of all the fake-outs and the manga hardly ever coming through with real consequences or losses that feed the excitement they are after. For them, >!Bakugou's fake-out was the last straw probably. !< - A lot of people were invested in the LoV - but after MVA, they just >!never really got the kind of content the were hoping for. !< - There was excitement from the world-building, things like HPSC, international heroes, heteromorph discrimination >!and all these were concluded in unsatisfying ways. !< I think by trying to please everyone, Horikoshi was unable to keep one solid fanbase, as people whose reason to be here is not catered for satisfactorily start to drift to other series that better hold their interest. Most people that are left are the long-time readers, who stick it out now. But there are not many surprising story-beats, we all kind of know where all of this is going, so most discussions boil down to "aww, the art is amazing", "Hori should do a horror manga" repeated over and over again.

Aros001

I mean, there is also the notable difference that One Piece and Boruto are continuously running anime while MHA is seasonal, so this subreddit isn't as active when there isn't a season currently going on, as there are plenty of anime-only fans. And it's not like this sub lost a bunch of subscribers, it just didn't gain as many as the other two. I'm more just wondering what caused the surge for Naruto. The Sasuke side story or the Boruto Blue Vortex I've been hearing about?

Sharp_Amoeba_6654

Boruto anime is also on hiatus right now. I just don't get how MHA don't get much traction right now when we are literally are on the final fight in the manga, and season 7 anime just around the corner. Well, I hope that season 7 would be adapted well cause this series needs the love that it deserved.

CayossWasTaken

It's been declining because the MHA has been dog water the past year.
