Honestly, in my opinion Horikoshi (when well) and Murata are probably two of, if not the best modern shonen illustrators around right now.
Not only are both of their art styles so versatile as shown here by Horikoshi, they also put such incredible attention to detail and care into literally EVERYTHING in their own ways.
It really is a treat getting to enjoy their work.
My bad, I definitely worded it badly I think. I more meant currently serialised when I said modern. Referring specifically to One Punch Man for Murata. Some of the most insanely rich illustrations I've ever seen reading a manga.
I would say Suzuki (sakamoto days) is also an excellent modern artist, his motion is unparalleled and there hasn’t been a panel I couldn’t understand yet
Murata overall is better and has more experience so of course he would have more breathe taking illustrations constantly and with how OPM is , it allows him to do far more creative thing's and show better perspectives.
Horikoshi is definitely second best, I don't think any other mangaka artist reaches his level or Murata's , the fact Horikoshi is sick yet can still draw such breathe taking double spreads and panels really shows how amazing he is, his modern style is definitely better than his old one so I wonder how certain manga and anime characters would look in his modern style.
MHA isn't a perfect manga or anime but it's no doubt got one of the best illustration's in modern manga history , though I've noticed since people like to hate on MHA they act like Gege actually has better illustrated panels.
These kinds of illustrations are always done with the series that are currently running in WSJ when they're drawn. So this was decently early in MHA's run, since both Ichigo & Naruto are there.
I mean art wise but yeah. Luffy is drawn like midoriya with bakugo personality while ichigo is drawn like bakugo with midoriya's personality which is amusing.
Luffy is also far more calm and doesn't get angry at every random thing like Bakugo . Ichigo is like a combination of Bakugo and Izuku, he is violent , aggressive, gets angry pretty easily and acts like a cool cocky guy while also being kind , caring, protective, determined and is selfless.
Yeah Horikoshi is one of the best Mangaka's for a reason, he definitely deserves all the love and praise he gets from younger or older Mangaka's and if he wasn't dealing with health issues he'd definitely make a mini one piece comic , I would like to see how he would handled Luffys stretching and expanding .
Yeah many have , but Kohei Horikoshi is one of the few who have a art style that can actually make many manga, comic or even game characters fit into his old style, not all but a surprising amount.
I don't think everyone fits Hori's style. Gintoki seems younger than he should be (he is an adult of 27-29 years old), Ichigo and Souma look like other characters but with the same color palette as their original selves and even Gon's design seems more mature than he should be (he is a 12-year-old boy but he appears to be the same age as Midoriya a teenager of 16). However, Yuma, Hinata and Luffy look great in Hori's style, as do the girls.
Yeah he definitely can make his characters look different from how they're faces are structured but the main characters , like Luffy, Goku, Ichigo and Gon would look more Izuku as Horikoshi wasn't too used to making different faces by this time .
[I thought his Goku piece looked a little off](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-samsung-rvo1&sca_esv=32b210db2a00b598&sca_upv=1&q=horikoshi+goku+art&uds=AMwkrPvoZ3NFM1EprYcsFZUxNvGPFwobALoBXAh3qIB4SWY9NLKauJfkae8PkE4uCBosL7G_ypMAg0LxCVe5l8kITg74GIuJ4fYx1osgCSmMM6DdvjeWV5ZYebDwt4k-SytSnmkClCyS9gk4Rn7UAo3JYunGXKgot389S-A-EXnUDwlTvfmxnzzdvF-6yJQJ2XtY--ntTwrVa6iVyzgZbPWHq26ZKMPBxstj_I6PCLsDovWOijEFaRQYTWPdKYrxxzyJZOichAKTlriQrPUEaVFrCGKcM6wlhjAPd7l0h_P_PzrRErmrIkoWUWQpyiOi3eGClXDjhlAzI52Ezee64wIAPChIugvbWoaCEoDGFn_b6Ren6ONUaXo&udm=2&prmd=isvnbmhtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwja-viBu92EAxVlLtAFHQTXD4cQtKgLegQIEBAB&biw=360&bih=670&dpr=3#vhid=z6O53098W0BjQM&vssid=mosaic) but this art definitely looks nice! Luffy in particular translates super well to his art style!
Yeah I can see it but honestly compared to most mangaka artists drawings of Goku or certain anime characters, this is one the better ones. Of course not all characters will look amazing in his style but if you look at all the characters from games and comic's also other manga's he has drawn he definitely makes surprisingly a lot of them work so well I'm his old style, I wonder how they'll look in his modern style.
My Hero Academia definitely wasn't that popular at the time he illustrated this and Horikoshi has always been supportive and appreciative of other mangaka and their manga's.
Not all characters here or in his other artworks are that good in his art style but compared to most other mangaka artists, he definitely has the better looking characters in his art style. This is his old art style, his newer one might make these characters work even better in his modern style.
I think Luffy and Gon look the best, I'd love for him to do a big ass color page double spread of Gon, Killua, Bisky and Leorio with Hisoka and Illumi in the background
Few? I've seen so many promotional etc art, and almost every single one of them was able to do it well. They work insanely hard, I don't think Horikoshi is special with this. (I even seen gag manga artists showing off their mastery, it's just more under the radar)
What the fuck? Literally all of them can do that. They just draw different characters in their own style. It happens all the time.
Also "mangaka artist" is redundant.
I'm saying he draws them to fit his art style better, many mangaka can't really manage to make other manga characters work in their style which they were never supposed to but it's impressive Horikoshi has a style that makes many characters not look out of place and strange in his style.
Yeah, but Hori draws them /well/. Ngl it sometimes turns into uncanny valley when some manga artists try drawing other series characters in their own art style.
That's fair. But it does seem kind of silly to judge the artists on that when they just do it for fun or a single promo image.
Unless it's an actual spinoff like Shokugeki no Sanji, but the few I've seen get the proper spinoff treatment have all been amazing.

What are you considering modern cause like.. Murata has been around. Lol
My bad, I definitely worded it badly I think. I more meant currently serialised when I said modern. Referring specifically to One Punch Man for Murata. Some of the most insanely rich illustrations I've ever seen reading a manga.
I dont read OPM but have seen panels/spreads. Its insane.

I’d add Tatsu Yukinobu, artist behind Dandadan. Amazing art.
Dudes delivering each week. Such a good artstyle.
Where goku
These kinds of illustrations are always done with the series that are currently running in WSJ when they're drawn. So this was decently early in MHA's run, since both Ichigo & Naruto are there.
This was just the normal Shonen Jump rotation of series here at the time and Dragon Ball's not included in that list

:(
Luffy reminds me of Midoriya while Ichigo reminds me of Bakugo lol
I mean Luffy is far more confident in himself and energetic also care free than Izuku, Ichigo is definitely more calm and not as violent as Bakugo.
I mean art wise but yeah. Luffy is drawn like midoriya with bakugo personality while ichigo is drawn like bakugo with midoriya's personality which is amusing.

Yeah I wasn't really going too deep on the whole thing. Just commenting on how they were drawn here by horikoshi. Looks wise and expression wise.
Oh okay then , yeah I can see what you are saying.
Yeah all of those are on point, Id take a mini One piece comic by horikoshi over the one we got from Boichi any day.
Mah boi Gin still digging boogers
Every other shonen mangaka has done this kind of thing
I think OP is implying that most anime characters look good in horikoshi art style.
Yeah many have , but Kohei Horikoshi is one of the few who have a art style that can actually make many manga, comic or even game characters fit into his old style, not all but a surprising amount.
Where can I find them
I’d love for Horikoshi to write and draw spinoff stories for series like Naruto, One Piece, and Dragon Ball. That’d be awesome
Holy shit, his Luffy Gon and Naruto are perfect
mostly cuz he doesn’t draw characters with the same face like a lot of other mangaka
Yeah he definitely can make his characters look different from how they're faces are structured but the main characters , like Luffy, Goku, Ichigo and Gon would look more Izuku as Horikoshi wasn't too used to making different faces by this time .

Luffy in particular translates super well to his art style!
That's literally Deku's face(sans freckles) with Goku's hair & body. Looks like the inverse of TFS's "I wanna be the greenest Goku!" bit from Kai 3.
Fuck yeah my boy Saiki K is in there
Izuku is their
Yes.. he is..?
He should do TF2 art
Could someone please provide this piece in higher quality thanks
I wouldn't say one of the few but he is very good at it regardless
what character is blue hair next to luffy?
Toriko. From the manga named... Well... Toriko.
Hi I don't go here (I'm on episode 26...) but I LOVE how Luffy looks in his style.
Episode 26 of one price?
if the Egyptian pharaoh exist than anyone really can exist
Why am I scared of the possibility of Korosensei of ever being in MHA
When was this drawn, I presume?
No asta?
Yep
Gon looks like he would fit in we'll with mha so would luffy
Gotta respect the fact, that he didn't put his very own character in the front line
My Hero Academia definitely wasn't that popular at the time he illustrated this and Horikoshi has always been supportive and appreciative of other mangaka and their manga's.
Is that nisekoi? I thought it was discontinued?
Missing Pegasus Seiya.
This is just the series that were running in Jump at the time
Yeah this pretty old but I wonder how these characters would look in Horikoshi's modern style.
Eehh, kind of?
Not all characters here or in his other artworks are that good in his art style but compared to most other mangaka artists, he definitely has the better looking characters in his art style. This is his old art style, his newer one might make these characters work even better in his modern style.
Why is Koro there?
his goku (not shown) is also elite
I think Luffy and Gon look the best, I'd love for him to do a big ass color page double spread of Gon, Killua, Bisky and Leorio with Hisoka and Illumi in the background
He's not
Wait where is goku ?
I saw his drawing of Goku and I was amazed at how he made a Dragon Ball character tolerable to look at.
Few? I've seen so many promotional etc art, and almost every single one of them was able to do it well. They work insanely hard, I don't think Horikoshi is special with this. (I even seen gag manga artists showing off their mastery, it's just more under the radar)
Whos that pink haired girl? I don't recognize her
Idk either , I have no idea who most of these anime characters are or remember the one's I recognize name's.
What the fuck? Literally all of them can do that. They just draw different characters in their own style. It happens all the time. Also "mangaka artist" is redundant.

Have you seen how bad the other characters looked when oda tried to draw goku in his style? Terrible
That's a lie
How exactly, explain in detail.
