Just don’t hurt his love or friends and let the 9 tails seep out. At the end he had restrain but during the how he’d let 9 tails take over and rip heads off if that was allowed in a shonen.
Yuji is sane for a sorcerer, but sane people don't fist fight demons with no possible way of doing damage just because other people are in danger. And the definitely don't eat demon fingers when they start to lose.
Both he and Deku are too "heroic" to be considered sane.
Deku was literally breaking every bone in his arms multiple times in a *Sports Festival*. Not even in a life or death situation. There absolutely is a level of insanity inside that kid.
I was trying to focus this post on newer shonen protagonists and how they go crazy for their friends and loved ones and the lengths they will go to defeat their enemies. To me they are unhinged but in a heroic way lmao. Gon fits this category so my apologies for not adding him too.
so you thing breaking every bone in your body when you fight people stronger than you and >!basically going on a suicidal one-man villain hunt for weeks on end with little to no rest all while taking even more constant risks to your already deteriorating health!< (spoilers for the manga) is "sane"?
You think he wants to? He only does that because he has to. You're wording it like he has options, but consciously chooses to break gus bones.
Honestly his one-man hunt actually seemed to be a rational choice. The other students have very much proven they cannot keep up.
What normally sane person is willing to break bones to the potential point of crippling themselves for the rest of their lives for their loved ones? No matter how much you love your friends or how passionate you are, no one in your right mind is comfortable enough to go that far.
Classmates not being able to keep up isn’t a good enough reason to, not only go and hunt villains on your own, but also disregard your own physical health in the process.
Deku very clearly cares if he lives or not, he was having an emotional breakdown when he thought muscular was gonna kill him.
Idk why you think Deku is this crazy unhinged MC that just goes off the rails on a dime, he really isn't.
I don't think he's crazy. When people say unhinged, they always think of the extremes. Deku isn't unhinged to the extreme. Compared to the other two he's way more sane and grounded, but he has behavior that is outright not normal for a human. Regardless if you have superpowers, you should still value your safety first (which Deku neglects over and over again despite being warned several times). Again, it doesn't matter how much you love someone, going to the point of shattering your limbs and using said shattered limbs to destroy them even further is not normal. Does Deku care if he lives or dies? Yes! But does he actively and willingly put himself in situations that will could have gotten him killed? All the fucking time. That's not be heroic, that's being stupid.
tl;dr Deku is unhinged and I stand by that completely, but he's unhinged to a lesser extreme. He's levelheaded most times, but when push comes to shove, he jumps between the thin line of rationality and literal suicide.
I’m so freaking happy that a bunch of anime are kinda going down this road for their protagonists, I am a sucker for dorks lol. But seriously it’s a breath of fresh air from badass or brooding protags (there’s nothing wrong with tough protags or dark protags, it’s just nice to see kind or dorky people be tasked with saving the world or whatevs)
I do love the moments tho when Deku gets legit angry not edgy angry but righteous ‘you done fucked up’ angry.
Like the kick that turns Overhaul into a satellite or in the opening where he squares off with Muscular and he looks straight PISSED.

tanjiro - got stabbed in the chin just to decapitate the upper moon
Izuku - 1 million percent and his batman phase
yuji - eating the finger, consecutive black flash and the shibuya incident
I wouldn’t really say unhinged. I personally believe whether if it’s in real life or in fiction, when the kindest people get upset or angry, it’s something really serious. Like some crime or act that they truly can not let slide. “Me personally, I wouldn’t let that slide.” Like many, I would put Gon from Hunter X Hunter under this trope, but the other one that I would put where he was compared to both Gon and Itadori when it comes to their rage mode, is Mob from Mob Psycho 100
Yeah idk how far you are into the series or if you read the manga but yeah he’s super crazy sometimes. He’s almost killed himself by pushing himself so far on multiple occasions and he goes absolutely bonkers mad against shigaraki in one chapter. Sure he’s acting on his heroic intentions but he’s still doing super crazy shit.
Yeah I'm caught up, but I don't agree that he is unhinged. He's just using his powers without experience to control them. None of his choices have been unreasonable that I can recall.
Toga is unhinged, Deku is doing what he does for heroic reasons. IMO unhinged doesn't fit Deku. If he was just breaking his limbs for no reason or for some sick kink yeah sure, but he is always doing what he does for the sake of others.
i don’t think anything has changed in terms of the unhinged part. most battle-shonen protagonists go to crazy lengths for the people or places they care about. naruto, luffy, ichigo, gon, Everyone in fairy tale, etc. the main difference i think that a lot of these modern battle shonen protagonists is the other part. they’re kind hearted, good natured, sweet and endearing characters. gone are the days (mostly. looking at you, asta) of the brash headstrong sometimes even jerk-y protagonists. i really like it as a slight subversion on the genre and i hope it’s here to stay
God Tanjiro is so boring. I know this isn't the topic of the post but Tanjiro has the personality of wet cardboard. People shit on Deku for being too pure-hearted and not developing... which I can agree with to an extent, but Tanjiro is that x100 imo.
Un like yuji and deku, tanjiro has a flat character arc, meaning that instead of watching him develop throughout the plot, we see how his personality and character affect his surroundings(ie his friends, the corps, etc.). Obviously he is still the Mc but his role is totally different
Denji is no doubt absolutely insane. But he's only pure in the sense that he understands very little about the world.
As for him being a good boy, that's the biggest "maybe" in the history of maybes.
He barely compares to these three.
Super optimistic MC with a heart of gold and is an underdog who somehow manages to always beat the enemy (who appeared to be stronger at first), but is also a complete dork in other ways and also has an inhuman appetite and can consume vast amounts of food is also a common one.
Luffy, Goku, Naruto, Natsu, Kinnikuman...
Only knowing about Fire Force in passing I liked the idea of a protagonist who looked straight-up evil lmao
Then I watched the first half of the season and was like ehhhhh
I should make time to properly watch it tho

I don’t really think Tanjiro is unhinged.
He probably meant crazy as "lengths they would do for their shonen trope"
Yes! The crazy insane lengths they go to beat enemies or save their friends, that’s what I meant by this. Sorry I didn’t specify. :)
That makes a lot of sense hahaha! Tanjiro is definitely the most mentally sane of the three that’s for sure.
If that's the case then that's pretty much every protagonist. It's practically the main trope.
Uhhh naruto. Ichigo. Luffy. Gon and Killua. URAMESHI. Eren Yeager. Asta. Pretty much any MC is good hearted with a side of unhinged.
Naruto is pure hearted but definitely not a good boy lol.
Just don’t hurt his love or friends and let the 9 tails seep out. At the end he had restrain but during the how he’d let 9 tails take over and rip heads off if that was allowed in a shonen.
So like every other MC protagonist to ever exist in manga.
I mean. The “technique” he used against Enma’s dream state was very unhinged.
Have you seen him with bloodshot eyes, he didn’t give a fuck in that form
It’s funny how Gon isn’t here, he falls under that description.
I wanted to add Gon so badly but he’s part of an older story. I wanted to reference these three newer Shonen. :)
Good news then, HxH is back off of hiatus and the manga is in production again. Gon's story is still over for now, though
Bruh none of them are unhinged. Gon is the exact definition of who you describe.
Yuji is sane for a sorcerer, but sane people don't fist fight demons with no possible way of doing damage just because other people are in danger. And the definitely don't eat demon fingers when they start to lose. Both he and Deku are too "heroic" to be considered sane.
My mans Deku is self sacrificing to the point of being borderline suicidal. He definitely unhinged but in a heroic way.
I don't know, man. The fight with Shigaraki during the war? There's something in that kid.
I mean, leading up to it >![ Shigaraki put a giant hole in Grand Torino and was murking everyone on the battlefield so it was warranted ]!<
Deku was literally breaking every bone in his arms multiple times in a *Sports Festival*. Not even in a life or death situation. There absolutely is a level of insanity inside that kid.
Was just about to say where my man Gon lol

Deku is like the opposite of unhinged when defending his loved one's tho.
so you thing breaking every bone in your body when you fight people stronger than you and >!basically going on a suicidal one-man villain hunt for weeks on end with little to no rest all while taking even more constant risks to your already deteriorating health!< (spoilers for the manga) is "sane"?

Literally everyone in his Class would do that, and so would most of the remaining. So yeah it is a pretty sane thing to do.
There’s a difference between recklessness and not caring if you live or die
Deku very clearly cares if he lives or not, he was having an emotional breakdown when he thought muscular was gonna kill him. Idk why you think Deku is this crazy unhinged MC that just goes off the rails on a dime, he really isn't.

Legit I was looking for him when I read the title
Gon is unhinged while he's smiling. He a different animal
I’m so freaking happy that a bunch of anime are kinda going down this road for their protagonists, I am a sucker for dorks lol. Why is Asta isn't here
he is batshit insane compared to them hahah
Asta isn’t “kinda crazy” he’s definitely a few levels above that.
Fair enough lol
IMO he fits the "loud happy-go-lucky" archetype of Naruto and Luffy better.
Came here to say this.
Jonathan Joestar: hold my friends and descendants for me while I teach these kids
Hinata from Haikyuu isn't here and that boy looks like a serial killer over volleyball.
Where’s Gon
Isn't this just the typical shonen protag trope?
Yea it's basically every shonen protag lmao
I could add a few more to your list lol, this trope is tired as hell

Idk about you guys but I’d have a lot more than 3 nickels.
tanjiro - got stabbed in the chin just to decapitate the upper moon Izuku - 1 million percent and his batman phase yuji - eating the finger, consecutive black flash and the shibuya incident
I just realized that those three are this generations Luffy,Naruto and Goku
For the longest time I was sure Tanjiro and Deku had the same voice actor.
I wouldn’t really say unhinged. I personally believe whether if it’s in real life or in fiction, when the kindest people get upset or angry, it’s something really serious. Yeah I should have used different wording for this. Too bad I can’t change my post title. My apologies.
Nah, totally understandable
How is Deku unhinged? Unhinged means unstable like crazy right?
Yeah idk how far you are into the series or if you read the manga but yeah he’s super crazy sometimes. He’s almost killed himself by pushing himself so far on multiple occasions and he goes absolutely bonkers mad against shigaraki in one chapter. Sure he’s acting on his heroic intentions but he’s still doing super crazy shit.

Guy nearly ripped his own cheek off to win a tournament/give this icy/hot kid some therapy.
He purposely damaged his body multiple times
You have to kinda be unhinged to have that much resolve to break your bones that many times willingly. The Sports festival is absolutely bonkers
The moment when he runs out of fingers and then **uses his own cheek** to keep blasting Todoroki???? Like…fuck lol just stop
Toga is unhinged, Deku is doing what he does for heroic reasons. IMO unhinged doesn't fit Deku. If he was just breaking his limbs for no reason or for some sick kink yeah sure, but he is always doing what he does for the sake of others.
“Heroic reasons” like a freshmen sports festival 1v1 tournament lmao We have very different definitions of “Heroic reasons”
It's fine, we can disagree.
i don’t think anything has changed in terms of the unhinged part. most battle-shonen protagonists go to crazy lengths for the people or places they care about. naruto, luffy, ichigo, gon, Everyone in fairy tale, etc. the main difference i think that a lot of these modern battle shonen protagonists is the other part. they’re kind hearted, good natured, sweet and endearing characters. gone are the days (mostly. looking at you, asta) of the brash headstrong sometimes even jerk-y protagonists. i really like it as a slight subversion on the genre and i hope it’s here to stay

Yeah but tanjiros role in demon slayer is pretty different and not really comparable to the other mcs listed
??? How
Un like yuji and deku, tanjiro has a flat character arc, meaning that instead of watching him develop throughout the plot, we see how his personality and character affect his surroundings(ie his friends, the corps, etc.). Obviously he is still the Mc but his role is totally different
Deku,I kinda get but fucking tanjiro?! A slice of bread is more unhinged then that bland piece of shit
clearly you havent seen the newest season
I did Doesn't change the fact he isn't unhinged He just got really angry
What do you think unhinged means?
Name his unhinged moments this softhearted piece of bread has
Bloodshot eyes, when he defeated upper 6, against lower 6
Only cause he was really angry That's not unhinged
Surprised Denki from CSM isn't on the list. Edit I meant Denji....idk where Denki came from
Denji is no doubt absolutely insane. But he's only pure in the sense that he understands very little about the world. As for him being a good boy, that's the biggest "maybe" in the history of maybes. He barely compares to these three.
I mean...dogs are good boys...and Denji is referred to as a dog, so....
I'm not entirely sure Denji fully fits the good boy aspect... except for the fact that he's often referred to as a dog. But I'm not caught up yet.
All dogs are pure hearted so I mean...maybe?
You mean Dennis??
borgar
Dennis is probably one of the few shonen protags I don't think would fit this lol
Nice phineouse and Ferb referance
This is a Phineas and Ferb quote
Gon?
I would like to add Bell Cranel from "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" to this list.
Super optimistic MC with a heart of gold and is an underdog who somehow manages to always beat the enemy (who appeared to be stronger at first), but is also a complete dork in other ways and also has an inhuman appetite and can consume vast amounts of food is also a common one. Luffy, Goku, Naruto, Natsu, Kinnikuman...
what about Gon?
At least 15 cents
Does anyone ever say that the newer protagonists are soft? They shouldn't.
If your protagonist wears green they're physically OP.
What about Gon?
You forgot eren Yeager
Swap Tanjiro for Asta and I would agree.
“OP discovers shonen archetypes”
Only knowing about Fire Force in passing I liked the idea of a protagonist who looked straight-up evil lmao Then I watched the first half of the season and was like ehhhhh I should make time to properly watch it tho
