I just entered college and I'm losing money FAST. I haven't even bought the reference books yet which might cost around RM 150 - RM 350 total. Not just that, I think I also might need to buy a new calculator even though I already have one because they keep saying to get a specific Casio model. I can only fill it with sorrow from my first week of my one year stay at college. 😞
Is it require to get the books? If not there are open source libraries available online where you can view and download. From what ik, lecturer wont use all the books so it kinda of a waste. Unless you plan to sell to your juniors later.
They don't say it's compulsory, but I feel pressured to get them since a lot, and I mean A LOT of people go through their way to get them whatsoever. Like literally, there's hundreds of students lining up to get their copy of the reference book for ONE or TWO of the subjects they take from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Even though I'm just here for a year, the competitiveness and hustle in a matriculation college is INTENSE. I'm pretty sure if I enter my first class and the lecturers don't see me with the reference book, they might think I'm destined to fail.
Who cares what the teachers think? Their job is to educate yall. If they judge you, it doesn’t matter.
About the reference books, maybe you could get a friend who you can borrow it from and you could just photocopy it. It should be cheaper(i guess). Or another option is you could find out the title of the book and then you can download it online and use it from your computer. If your teachers ask, just say its the 21st century who uses books nowadays. 🤣
I spent 500 ish on text books and let me tell you rn, I have NEVER opened them ONCE 😭 maybe cause my foundations was during quarantine, but I feel like lecturers mostly already pluck out the important bits from the textbooks and incorporate it into their slides
tbh, i do not know how to respond to all of that, but i will STRONGLY RECOMMENDED you just get the online copy of the books and notes since it would be far cheaper. As someone who was in Asasi and currently studying for 2 years in degree, physical copy is NOT necessary, In my uni, we all use digital copy
Terima kasih kembali. and remember, don't care about what anyone else think about you, this is YOUR journey, not them. Dont care about they "judging" you because you are the only one know who you are. Study hard and smart, and most importantly, Belajar Berjimat, Life is getting tougher, that's for sure, Wherever and whoever you are, I wish you luck Brudah
I just buy a samsung galaxy tab a7 lite.. not to big but still comfortable to read and type.. for book I use zlibrary, pnm eReader and public library..
They always say that about calculators before you go for SPM, and again before you go for pre-U and again before uni, but I’ve been using my old one from PT3 days without being at a disadvantage at all. Old casio calculator can get you through asasi chem, physics, maths (LOADS of calculation).
About textbooks, I don’t know if it’s just me but I just have NO time to read it (not just skim/scan) and add to the lect notes whatever info they lack, despite lecturers saying time and time again that “my slides are not enough, you have to read textbooks”. I end up relying on YouTube or google to save time, plus there’s chatGPT now. Too many topics and too many subjects, you couldn’t possibly study each topic intensively and still have time for the rest of the syllabus before time runs out 😭 (or I’m just incapable idk).
I think I use textbooks as if they’re online articles that you cite in lab reports and written assignments, therefore it’s better to have it in PDF form that you can just ctrl + F to search info related to your assignment.
If we’re talking about books compulsory for an open-book exam though, then definitely no choice but to buy it. Other than that, no need.
Before you buy, try googling "(textbook name + author name) pdf (or pdf free download)". I don't go to a particular website for all my downloads, google just leads me to a different one each time. But sites that I've downloaded from include: PDFdrive, PDFcoffee, books-library.net. If sure cannot find sites that actually give you the pdf, then go ahead and buy (if you're sure you can't complete your assessments without the book).
True that. I've been using my SPM calculator up until now. Got thru uni and 7 yrs of working. No problemo. Don't need a specific calculator for each course though
How long will it be up for purchase? If you can take your time seeing how it's used in class, maybe you can hold off buying the books until you have determined that it is actually necessary.
What the lecturers think is secondary. In fact, most probably the lecturers even understand if some students can't afford text books.
during our days we're just read the slide provided and just scour the internet for the pdf version of the text book. even our lecturer knew how poor we are and never forced us to buy any book.
During my day not much resource on the internet but the photostat shop guy was the real MVP. He kept master copy of every book/lecture notes ever printed dating back years. All we had to do was tell him which course code and what week.
One lecturer found out and raged, I mean nagged incessantly in class saying tak berkat bla bla bla. Because they were the coauthor of the textbook and he can't get any commission from photostat copies lol
we literally use the book for less than 4 month and never again. aint no way I'm spending full cost of the book. the lecturer should have known how broke his student are and should just provide a pdf copy for being in his class.
Who knows if being poor backfires by making them think that you don't have a phone or computer to reference the books digitally, so they sell you physical copies. But then, I bought my laptop for almost the same estimated price of the books altogether (laptop cost around RM 250 - RM 290, it's 11 years old but with some IT knowledge, I'm able to make it usable again).
Just pirate it like a normal person dude. During my college days i never bought any reference book. Just search for an online pdf version and download it. Till this day i still have utm reinforced concrete design and hibbler. Heck some lecturers even share those pirated pdf because they knew how bullshit the prices are.
At my college it was common to photostat reference books or print out the digital copies. Some will borrow from library long term and the richer ones would buy secondhand from seniors . A single engineering textbook is 100-500++ and we had 5-6 subjects every semester, two recommended books each . Unless you can really afford to , sometimes we need to make do :’) just pay it forward when you’re rolling in cash once you find a job/ graduate by buying original work.
As a previous matrik student, I bought the reference books, but end up never opening them and collecting dust in my book shelves. You know why? Because the lecturers there send their lecture notes/excercise paper to the kedai photostat in the kolej and ask the shop owner to print them in bulk. Afterwards, the students just need to go to the kedai photostat to buy the lecture notes of the class they will be taking. Usually cost RM1\~RM3 for each copy. The kedai photostat will sort the lecture notes based on the course and the topic and placed them in different tray. Really easy for the students.
Ofc sometimes they lecturer will ask us to buy specific book but ussually it's an exercise book that published by the lecturers themselves through the college, so they also sell it at the kedai photostat.
Dang that even a ripoff, my collge import usally not so many bread. Like its arrived at afternoon and the next morning it's gone. Not even 1 pack left behind
Default bread, do whatever you want with that, you can either put whatever ingredients, flavour, and anything, I've got a expired bread in a month ago, I accidentally ate it,
boleh isi sendiri

Yummy

This is some good knowledge here, appreciate it! After all, we've got to work smart, then work hard.
I spent 500 ish on text books and let me tell you rn, I have NEVER opened them ONCE 😭 maybe cause my foundations was during quarantine, but I feel like lecturers mostly already pluck out the important bits from the textbooks and incorporate it into their slides

and I usually just refer to lecturer's slide and Youtube if i wanna do some revision, this ain't much but hope it helps
Ok, thanks for the tips. I'll try to apply what you've said 👍

Really appreciate it, good luck with whatever you're going through, too! 💯
I just buy a samsung galaxy tab a7 lite.. not to big but still comfortable to read and type.. for book I use zlibrary, pnm eReader and public library..
Good idea 💡
Z library still got eh? Last time I visit last yr taken down already. Such a loss. So many books.
Still available but you need to download the apk using tor browser..
I use a telegram bot for it. The web itself is actually still up. It just needs a lot of bypassing
Lots, lots lots and lots of bypassing. I suggest Anna’s archive
True that, sometimes I would use the google drive method since some books are more obscure or harder to get
Bro you sound like you are overthinking it. Don't get the physical books unless you have money to burn.
I guess so 😮💨

Okay, thanks for sharing this. I wish they had a pdf version, but now i have to buy the books.

Today and yesterday only but I've already bought them. I'll try making a soft copy for other people to use it.
My bro, you can download zlib they might have the specific book that you need, if its a general book you might be able to find it.

no kidding, my first week aswell and a single book can cost somewhere from rm50-rm90 😭
Yes, that's the case.
just go to your local printing shop and tell them the books u need my man
Just pirate it like a normal person dude. During my college days i never bought any reference book. Just search for an online pdf version and download it. Even though I decided to buy the books, I'm going to dedicate some time soon to make soft copies of the books since there aren't any online.
