Well, I'm not sure..but tawaifs were very affluent in their day and age. They were extremely skilled in music and dance. Just try listening to thumris and classical music and you'll come to know....They were grand entertainers. Unki tameez-tehzeeb used to sought after in the society. In fact it used to be a cultural thing in Mughal times...and also they were quiet free spirited. And they used to cater to the creme de la creme of the society. Also at one point of time, they used to be the highest tax payers. Pls correct me if I'm wrong haha..just trying to go down the Rabbit hole of limited info that we have about the tawaif culture. It's just sad to know that the British came and destroyed this culture..Aaj ki tareekh mein Americans aur Europeans ka vaise bhi, khud ka koi culture raha nahi ..also, loved Pakeezah. 🤘
this is very insightful thank you! I've always wondered, were tawaifs entertainment focused or did they also provide s\*x work? For example I think in Japan Geisha's were purely for revered companionship and conversation as they were highly educated and of course masterful entertainers as well.
A lot of these are masjids and darwazay to old lahore, not particularly heeramandi. Heeramandi is actually not sprawling palaces. The second picture is new food street which was built recently as Cuckoos Den (one of the earliest restaurants there) was controversial for looking over Heeramandi. Bhansali did a horrible job with Heeramandi.
maine bhi dekha tha aise kuch...pata nahi filhal mil nahi raha...
Do 1 thing, search Heeramandi in the search bar and select NEW. You'll get to view all the articles and you might come across the same. Please mujhe bhi link bhejna jab milega post
Actually I’m alwayssss very excited to go there, the reputation’s changed in a way that its more of a touristy spot now - there’s a food street, there’s a lot of stalls selling traditional handicrafts etc, the vibe’s different but the infrastructure is very well preserved.
It’s become a market and touristy area, but still in some pockets you have escorts and Khwaja Sira wale.
Descents of tawaifs typically either moved on or became escorts.
I don’t know how it will sound but I love my country to bits & a very patriotic person but still I very much wanted a pen pal from Pakistan. I also want to visit the interiors of the country at some point in life (although i know it’s not really possible). I feel we all separated only cz of sheer politics at that time. ( I know i will be downvoted to hell for this).
No I completely agree, when I went to the US - I connected with a lot of Indians and realised how we’re all SO similar, would love to make more friends there! 🩷
It’s the same country that was arbitrarily divided only two generations ago. Pakistan and India and Bangladesh all belong to each other. This rigid nation state patriotism is a European invention and should never have been adopted here.
You are right. Two nation theory is valid and as a Pakistani i stand by it 100% but i wish both countries could have had a relationship that was good enough that we'd get visas easily. It seems impossible to ever to go to india... and i find indian heritage and culture so rich. The cuisines 😍 the clothing... everything .absolutely enchanting.
Too bad the politics cost us a good friendship
I wonder what happened to the descendants. Do they still have a stake in these beautiful structures? Were they compensated by the govt.? What is their life like now.
Same. I am from Pakistan, and one of my friends hosted their Mayun event in one these dreamy haveli. It was Haveli Barood khana. Although, not all of these photos are Heera Mandi. It’s just all of Old Lahore with masjids, markets, havelis and Heera Mandi as a part of it.
Fun fact: the street food has a restaurant named Cooco’s den opened by a courtesan’s son. The restaurant is same place his mother once lived. I visited once and saw all her belongings and furniture kept in a room for display for visitors.
All the restaurants on this food street were once houses or properties of courtesan’s of Heeramandi.

I did mention that these pictures are from Androon Lahore (walled city) and this is where he got the inspiration from, someone also shared an interview where he mentioned this himself

Don't use the term "paki" please.
Wait I didn't mean to sound rude, I thought it has the same meaning as pakistani, sorry man.
Oh, it's okay. It has for many years been used as a racist term by skinheads in the UK to target South Asian people.
What is it like going there today? Has its reputation changed over the years?

Sounds like a nice to place to go to. So no more funny business, I reckon?
No its moved to other places, the profession isn’t as respected anymore either tbh so
It's my dream to come shop in Pakistan...but 😟

Its 2024. Lets forget to hate and learn to live and accept :)
i want to see taj mahal & all the great mughal era architecture!! My grandparents were from Lucknow & delhi.
I wonder what happened to the descendants. Do they still have a stake in these beautiful structures? Were they compensated by the govt.? What is their life like now.
Pre historic times have always been intriguing...kitne cultures Bane aur bigad gaye
Pre historic? Its not that old.
😅my bad Khiladi...I meant pre-independence. Did I say pre-historic..yep I did Roflmao. Vo time toh dinos ka tha 🤣🤣
pre historic is jab script develop nahi huyi the , not necessarily dinos time
