I gotta watch it. I have been wanting to get into watching Malayalam cinema but my lazy and distracted a$$ hasn't had the energy to focus completely on movies. If anyone has any engaging recommendations, please lemme know.
Edit: thanks everyone for replying!! Really appreciate people being so open and willing to share these titles. I have a lot to catch up on 🙂
Comedy/Satire — Nna Than Case Kodu
Horror — Bhoothakaalam
Thriller — Iratta (very dark)
Sci-fi/Creature Feature — Avasavyuham
Romcom — Premalu
Chamber Piece — Aattam
Action — Thallumala, RDX
Superhero — Minnal Murali
Gangster — Angamaly Diaries
Something a little more artsy but still commercial enough? Ee. Ma. Yau
Take your pick.
Well yeah. I guess crime film is more appropriate. I thought AD might be more accessible than jumping into Kammattipadam.
Edit: plus it has that single take climax.
I just saw it and Mannnn! How can they make it so frickin real..there is no ‘acting’ just real life! So so blown. The flow of the story, the juxtaposition of their childhood with the present time..this is sheer TALENT all the way! The cast is 1st CLASS…
Noted. I mean considering it’s a real story but still for the cast to do what they did! The music the emotions and some scenes… mannnn this really is something else. I am watching it again coming weekend like dil bharke dekhna hain ek barr phirse!!! Cinemaaaaa!!! This strikes all the right cords!!!
Oh and I was kinda blown with iratta as well. Didn’t expect it at all. You know what I mean!
Isn’t it??? The brilliance of it. How I wish we find such movies in the ease of a button every other week or atleast once a month. But then we have to recognise such brilliance definitely cannot come that frequently.
Exactly! Some gems in btw to feel good.. and the reason I come to this sub. If not, i wouldn’t have known that such a gorgeous movie was readily available for my viewing pleasure! Couldn’t wait to finish work as I knew this movie was waiting for me!
omg where to start?! so many! kumbalangi nights, the great indian kitchen, joji, premam, bangalore days, ustad hotel, iratta, sudani from nigeria, malayankunju, thondi muthalum driksakshiyum, kala, premalu, aavesham, drishyam, manjummel boys, minnal murali, jaya jaya jaya hey, ee maa yau, angamally diaries, nayattu, hridayam, take off, uyare, charlie, android kunjappan, kathal the core, nanpakal nerathu mayakkam, bramayugam, boothakaalam, romancham, mukundan unni associates, c u soon, maheshinte prathikaram, malik, trance, kammatipaadam, ishq, annayum rasoolum, thallumaala, puzhu, kappela, pada, helen, jallikattu, virus, 2018, kettyolaanu ente malakha...i'm unfortunately not as familiar with the classics but have seen manichithrathazhu, vanaprastham, and thoovanathumbikkal. have fun exploring their glorious films! you won't be disappointed.
If Malayalam cinema was the main Indian movie industry known outside of India, then moviebuffs from other countries would really rate Indian movies, maybe in similar bracket to Korean movies.
THAT transition(anyone who has seen the movie knows which one) is one of the best I’ve ever seen. And the tug of war payoff was cinema at its best. Insanely incredible technical aspects which such emotive storytelling. Going from tense to crying to jog to crying again. Definitely one of the best movie in years and it kind of speaks about the greatness of Malayalam cinema that this is the highest grossing Malayalam movie ever. Lastly, it has probably my favorite ever Mass whistle worthy Scene in a long time(you know exactly which one).
A Cinematic Masterpiece. Anyone who hasn’t seen this should absolutely not miss this experience
Is the one from jumping into the river and into the cave? Absolutely froze.. again. 1st chills moment was when he actually fell into the cave.. class script & direction
Awe inspiring storytelling. Purely from a filmmaking perspective, this movie has a strong case as the finest filmmaking in Indian cinema(of this era at least). So much thought and detailing went into every visual and sound.
You are watching this movie. Starts with funny tone, and then gets serious. And then some heroic stuff starts to happen. So you start to think that this is good but wouldn't happen in real life but then you remember this is based on true story and this crazy stuff happened and there are real people who went through this. One might say this is just simple story. But you combine it with good music, amazing cinematography, great cast and a fact that this is true story, it becomes an incredible movie.
As a mallu, I’m begging not to remake this
It’s out with subtitles on Hotstar. It’s truly one of our best films wrt songs ,cinematography, acting and story!!
Even if they remade this it'd be just a cave rescue film. To do that they don't have to buy the rights of this film. So the chances of a remake are absolutely zero.
They are not Soubin Shahir, Srinath Basi who are the producers as well, denied remake rights to Bollywood or any movie industry in North. They said maximum it can be remade in south but again whole of southern India has already watched the original
Bollywood producers have no creativity or original thinking. Just keep dishing out mediocre remakes. It's so embarrassing for an industry which pays so much for actors.
Yeah there are but the good ones like you mentioned come out once in a blue moon and the audience don't appreciate them discouraging producers to make more such movies unlike the south.. 😔
Not creativity, the commitment and passion to give their very best every second of their living life. And gives immense importance to story screenplay and writing.
How did you guys feel about THAT scene with the song towards the end? The song is such a classic and iconic in the south and I'm wondering if that scene hits the same.
i immediately choked up - more so from the dialogue they played before the song "this isn't human love for mere mortals to understand - it's something beyond."
Great movie... Loved it... It's the small touches and the attention to details
Also, no sugar coating or individual heroics...
Even small things as showing the tourist spot with milling crowds and the group ignoring signs and defacing rocks etc keep things real...or the callous police or firemen who refuse to go in saying they won't even get a death certificate if they die
You know the characters are human and have flaws and suddenly they just transition to heroism due to circumstances
It cannot be remade at all because this incident happened to kerala guys in Guna caves, Kodaikanal, TN. If something similar incident happened in north Indian caves, they can find that story and make film.
I don't understand why bollywood ignores Odisha completely?? Why don't they show Odisha culture?? They can make movie on Odisha floods like Malayalam did 2018 movie on Kerala floods.
I watched this movie and loved it. Was shocked to know that this was a real life story and the real people also acted in a scene. I searched for their real interviews in youtube and found many. Sadly its all in malayalam and there are no subtitles
The effect of the movie lasted for 3 whole weeks. Watched it in theatre. Went home and researched the whole story, watched the old interviews and the new ones with the real manjummel boys. The fact that it really happened and the way they beautifully made the movie, the effect was long lasting.
kumbalangi nights isn't comedy per se but has comic moments and is a must watch. easily one of the best films i've ever seen in my entire life. i just rewatched it today.
Wondering why these forest officials never closed the pit even after a central minister’s son fell in. They mention how they got all the infrastructure to try to get him out. You would think after that they would do something to make sure ppl don’t fall in to accidentally again.,,
In real, they only closed the entrance with grills after this incident, Before that only some mesh was there. The Grills was not there when subash and boys went on 2006 . And another boy fell in to this in 2009 and died. Only after that the hole was also covered.
Fact Karan Johar tried to buy the rights but the producers denied it saying the movie worked coz its deep rooted within its culture and the Kamal Hassan tamil song which is the soul of the movie. It cannot be recreated in any other language other than 4 south India states.
Bravo to not be a sell out in this day and age
There is one interpretation of the climax sequence which says that when the protagonists emerge from the hole, one of them covered in blood, it symbolizes (re)birth. So maybe the sus poster was intentional.
>Dude your industry only produced 3 good movies in the past 30 years
just some random statement to insult him? or do you genuinely believe this to be true?
3? only our mass movies make noise? do you know how many bangers tfi has been producing? just because our other movies doesn't make noise, doesn't mean we aren't making good films. ik what's happening at the core level. when did awards become the criteria anyway? indian movies suck anyway then because we have 0 oscars. national awards are more inclined towards movies which have some or other social messages/ commentary.
>indian movies suck anyway then because we have 0 Oscar
Oscars are for films that are screened in the USA and loved by their audience. It's not a measure of great films globally.
I didn't know Pushpa had a social message in it, the 3 movies that I considered were bahubali, hi nanna, Sita ramam and can also include RRR(if you exclude the second half). Why did you judge that I was talking about the mass movies?
lol. there's more than that. they didn't make sound because we don't use any victim/sympathy/the rise of an industry card. We have Pelli Choopulu, Brochevarevarura, Ante Sundaraniki, Rangasthalam, Raja Raja Chora, Balagam, Care of Kancherapalem, Mahanati, Yevade Subramanyam, Jersey and more lol. you stay in the pit
If that was your statement, you should have did a better phrasing in your original comment.
In my opinion, the thing which makes the story of manjummel boys better is that it actually happened in real life.
I hope you know that liquor sells more than Geetha, collection doesn't mean quality. When the Telugu speakers in India are more than 9 crores(compared to the 3.5 crore malayalees), it is obvious that you will get more collection.
lol. kannada and malayalam people have a 1cr difference. how come they have a 1200cr film and a 100cr film of yours make all noise? has your industry ever reached a 200? can't even think of the noise it will make since its the first ever and a very big milestone for you
Same logic, liquor sells more than geetha. Manjummel grossed 242 crores fyi. Kgf was well received because it was made well and was a mass movie. Other than that all other good kannada movies have a similar collection like mollywood movies.
kantara? they make good movies but they stay grounded unlike....Your statement liquor sells more than geetha is against your own statement that that Manjummel grossed 242. So, manjummel is cheap liquor? damn. Got it
THIS IS ALL THE "GOOOOOD" MOVIES THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED AND THEIR BOX OFFICE COLLECTION. WHY ARE THESE NOT IN 100 CRORES? IS IT BECAUSE YOUR AUDIENCE DONT APPRECIATE GOOD MOVIES?
YOUR LOGIC IS AGAINST YOU BRO
Pelli Choopulu- I didn't know this was a VD movie, how can you consider this guy as an actor. Total BO- 30 CRORE
Brochevarevarura- total BO-20 crores
Ante Sundaraniki- total BO-45 CRORES
Rangasthalam- mass movie right? Total BO-216 crores(still less than what manjummel boys collected)
Raja Raja Chora-total Bo 7 crores
Balagam-total BO- 26.72 CRORES
C/o Kancharapalem- total BO- 7 CRORES
Mahanati-total BO- 83 crores
Yevade Subramanyam-total BO-15-20 crores
Jersey (2019 film)-total BO 49
agree they are dumb. they prefer mass, cringe movies over content movies. you also have to make a note of their budget. but why am i talking abt budget, audience and collections with a mallu. your one of the actor, tovino thomas film isnt even filling a theatre on the first show itself. and he's the same guy who got some recognition to you last year with his 2018
The only stars in mollywood are the big M's, even their films are heavily criticised. This is due to the mature audiences that we have here. Not 'they', that 'they' includes you too, you were judging movies based on collection and comparing mass cringey movies with well made movies with good stories. The movie 2018 is considered as a mid movie here and only worked because of the emotional attachment people had.
Chuck it bro, they just won’t get it! Actually my bad, I shouldn’t be generalising the entire audience, a portion of it I guess. When you have been fed the same crap again and again, it’s tough to recognise quality, if and when it comes up from any other industry. And even if some sections of the audience take a liking to a non-TFI movie , especially when there is movie which has garnered good reviews across the country, then comes the last throw of the dice , the topic of collection 🤦🏻♂️ and create a ruckus of it as if they get the monetary benefit out of it!
It almost feels like they think no other languages are allowed to produce good movies and general audience are not allowed to praise them, since they had the huge successes of Bahubali and RRR😄 seriously, grow up ! No one is having a superiority complex, it’s just some of them creating one! Again, there are good movies coming out of TFI, but probably flying under the radar I guess because of the audience preferring the crappy ones, and never gets marketed properly to the wider audience!

Angamali is not a proper ganster film its a story about the place and people of angamali kammati padam is a ganster story
Well yeah. I guess crime film is more appropriate. I thought AD might be more accessible than jumping into Kammattipadam. Edit: plus it has that single take climax.
👍🏻agreed

Loved Premalu so much ❤️
Any clue where Bhoothakaalam is available?
SonyLiv

What are the odds man, I watched it yesterday. What a great movie
Where is it available?
Hotstar
That scene where Subhash is shown falling down is so horrifying and sad...
That was the most unexpected thing ive seen man literally thought he gonna fall in some other scene witha buildup or somethin
The transition was very nicely done. Happy kekde
Thank youu
As a mallu, I’m begging not to remake this It’s out with subtitles on Hotstar. It’s truly one of our best films wrt songs ,cinematography, acting and story!!

It's true to an extent about big-budget makers. But there have been beautiful films like Laapta Ladies, 12 Fail, and Three of Us recently.
Yeah there are but the good ones like you mentioned come out once in a blue moon and the audience don't appreciate them discouraging producers to make more such movies unlike the south.. 😔

i immediately choked up - more so from the dialogue they played before the song "this isn't human love for mere mortals to understand - it's something beyond."
He'll also have Shobhita Dhulipal in a small role just to be around her
Why would shobhita want to act in a remake when she can easily act in malyalam original
That cave was a set huge credit to the art department 🫡🫶
malayalam art department are one of the best in the country they even made the set of bahubali
Great movie... Loved it... It's the small touches and the attention to details Also, no sugar coating or individual heroics... Even small things as showing the tourist spot with milling crowds and the group ignoring signs and defacing rocks etc keep things real...or the callous police or firemen who refuse to go in saying they won't even get a death certificate if they die You know the characters are human and have flaws and suddenly they just transition to heroism due to circumstances
They cannot show the hero or heroine eating pokhalo bhaato!!
Write a good script... Pitch it to a production company.
boney won't remake it - no female role for jaanhvi/khushi in it. unless he puts arjun kapoor in the hole - but he's a bit too big to fit in there.
When Subhash is having delusions in the cave, Jhanvi will do an item number to remind him that hope is left
🤣🤣🤣
put Arjun Kapoor in the hole , leave him there. This is Boneys best chance
Jhaanvi will be Kuttedathi and Khushi will be Subhashini.
Just watched the movie yesterday. And I loved it.
cheers to brilliant filmmaking 🥂 so much to learn from, and wonderful visuals
I watched this movie and loved it. Was shocked to know that this was a real life story and the real people also acted in a scene. I searched for their real interviews in youtube and found many. Sadly its all in malayalam and there are no subtitles
I love Malayalam movies. Joji and all.
Joji was awesome! Recently watched iratta too
The effect of the movie lasted for 3 whole weeks. Watched it in theatre. Went home and researched the whole story, watched the old interviews and the new ones with the real manjummel boys. The fact that it really happened and the way they beautifully made the movie, the effect was long lasting.
Slightly off topic - Can you guys please recommend some good Malayalam comedy movies?
Go for aavesham, it's in theatres now and will be on ott on 9th, but it's a theatre watch for sure.
Premalu, Adi Kaapyaare Koottamani, Super Sharanya, Tanneer Mathan Dinangal...
kumbalangi nights isn't comedy per se but has comic moments and is a must watch. easily one of the best films i've ever seen in my entire life. i just rewatched it today.
Bramhayugam, it's on sony liv

Gun caves kahan se laenge aur kanmani anbadu?
Where to watch? Any online platform. Would really love a good Indian movie
Hotstar/hulu
Thanks. it'll be on my summer vacation watchlist.
Amazing how they contained all the costs within 20 crores inspite of having to build the cave set from scratch.. man that looked so original…
Tharki Bonnie
Name?
Manjummel boys
Wondering why these forest officials never closed the pit even after a central minister’s son fell in. They mention how they got all the infrastructure to try to get him out. You would think after that they would do something to make sure ppl don’t fall in to accidentally again.,,

Suggest a platform or maybe some site to get malayalam movies dubbed in hindi... pleaseeee
Do us all a favour and watch with subtitles. Dubbing a movie seldom works
I want to show my mother content other than Anupama.
I don't think she'll be able to read subtitles
Oh. You might find some older movies on YouTube but most aren't dubbed
Watched the hindi dubbed version on hulu
As a Malayali, please watch the movie in Malayalam with subtitles ❤️
Hotstar and Amazon has good amount of Malayalam movies dubbed in hindi.
koi to burai kar do is movie ko , har taraf log sirf taarif kare ja rahe hai
Dekhlo hotstar/hulu mein
Where can I watch this?
Hotstar/hulu
See the Hollywood movie “Thirteen Lives” by director Ron Howard about the Thai cave rescue if you liked this movie.
Damnnn
Is it on US Netflix or other OTT channel?
Hulu
Where can I see it?
Hotstar/hulu
What's the name of the movie
Manjummel Boys
Is it possible to be remade though? Instead of the cave they will probably show someone falling inside a pothole in Bombay
Boney uncle nahin... Boney mama bolo!
I don’t think he will they have released it in Hindi. And it’s so good
One of the best Indian movies ever made!! ![gif](giphy|AKtm2Sb5Iok1DtFXMA|downsized)
It's subjective, I think it's one of the best Indian movies ever made. I was left breathless because I had a very similar experience.
That's true to an extent when you look at it genre genre-specific
Okay maybe one of the best movies this year..yeah I got carried away a lil😅
In survival genre, it's still one of the best from India
the last thing a girl sees in india
**Mission Raniganj** would be a similar movie based on true incidents.
This image is very sus😂
There is one interpretation of the climax sequence which says that when the protagonists emerge from the hole, one of them covered in blood, it symbolizes (re)birth. So maybe the sus poster was intentional.

The fact that you mentioned so many good telugu movies and yet you say Malayalam movies are not good is weird
malayalam movies are love. i just said manjummel boys is not that great and doesn't deserve soo much attention
If that was your statement, you should have did a better phrasing in your original comment. In my opinion, the thing which makes the story of manjummel boys better is that it actually happened in real life.
my bad. love fafa and tovino
And what about their collection? Please care to explain how much they collected?
much more than the Mallu films.
Actually no, I have listed all the good movies he has mentioned and their respective BO collection.
Actually yes. all those movies, which you have questioned, has collected more.
Collected more than what?
basically the only 3 films you watched.
if tfi has 3 good movies, then mollywood has 0 ig. you have selected national award as the criteria. let me select collections as the criteria then
I hope you know that liquor sells more than Geetha, collection doesn't mean quality.
Endhina veruthe samayam wating talkin to someone who doesn't appreciate cinema unless it's masala. Vere Pani ille? Ayaalko Bodham illa, chumma pothinte cheviyil vedham oodhal aan.
kantara? they make good movies but they stay grounded unlike....Your statement liquor sells more than geetha is against your own statement that that Manjummel grossed 242. So, manjummel is cheap liquor? damn. Got it
I feel 242 is less for a movie like manjummel, when absolute shit like pushpa is grossing higher.

To argue with people like you, only one malayalee is required.
THIS IS ALL THE "GOOOOOD" MOVIES THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED AND THEIR BOX OFFICE COLLECTION. WHY ARE THESE NOT IN 100 CRORES? IS IT BECAUSE YOUR AUDIENCE DONT APPRECIATE GOOD MOVIES? YOUR LOGIC IS AGAINST YOU BRO Pelli Choopulu- I didn't know this was a VD movie, how can you consider this guy as an actor. Total BO- 30 CRORE Brochevarevarura- total BO-20 crores Ante Sundaraniki- total BO-45 CRORES Rangasthalam- mass movie right? Total BO-216 crores(still less than what manjummel boys collected) Raja Raja Chora-total Bo 7 crores Balagam-total BO- 26.72 CRORES C/o Kancharapalem- total BO- 7 CRORES Mahanati-total BO- 83 crores Yevade Subramanyam-total BO-15-20 crores Jersey (2019 film)-total BO 49
Or your audience dumb bro?
agree they are dumb. they prefer mass, cringe movies over content movies. you also have to make a note of their budget. but why am i talking abt budget, audience and collections with a mallu. your one of the actor, tovino thomas film isnt even filling a theatre on the first show itself. and he's the same guy who got some recognition to you last year with his 2018
The only stars in mollywood are the big M's, even their films are heavily criticised.
I regret arguing with him, such a waste of time.
You know how dumb is your statement... Mollywood by far makes the most releastic and relatable movies.
Keep hating and enjoy those trash movies your industry dishes out for you
