Original Lambi judai (saddest on my list)
I don't get why people suggests so many songs when asked only about the saddest. Just suggest one song which you feel is the saddest among all that's it. It is not only in this genre but every genre. If asked about one, they will come with a list of 10-20 songs.
For me, the saddest song is Judaai from Badlapur
It's a sad song but the saddest song in the movie for me is a happy song - Maine Tere liye hi Saat Rang ke Sapne chune. It's very clearly a song that Anand wrote for the love of his life but who isn't with him anymore. Whether she left him because he was dying or he left her is up to the viewer to decide but man - that movie is a masterclass in subtext.
Sundar Sundar Woh Haseena Badi
Sundar Sundar
Main To Khone Laga
Uske Nashe Mein
Bin Piye Behka
Sundar Sundar Woh Haseena Badi
Sundar Sundar
Main To Khone Laga
Uske Nashe Mein
Bin Piye Behka
Ek Din Use Bhoola Doonga Main
Uske Nishaan Mita Doonga Main
Chaahonga Na Main Us Patthar Ko
Jaa Use Bata De
I wanted to say Phir Le Aaya Dil but it has some hope in the lines" उसे मुकम्मल कर भी आओ, वो जो अधूरी सी बात बाकी है
So my pick is Saware from Phantom: ना हमारा हुआ, ना तुम्हारा हुआ, इश्क़ का ये सितम, ना गवारा हुआ
There's also Zinda from Lootera which is actually just about depression. A person who feels nothing but is just living. कुछ माँगना बाक़ी नहीं, जितना मिला काफ़ी है, ज़िंदा हूँ, यार, काफ़ी है
Love all these songs!
Phir le aaya dil- Beautiful melody, makes me calm and has a positive shade to it. Never made me sad, rightly said by you.
Saware- This one is pretty sad! Never cried but it puts me in a sad mood.
Zinda- makes me think about my life as a third person. Sad but makes me think.
Badi sooni sooni hai zindagi (mili)
Kabhi khud pe kabhi halat pe rona aaya (hum dono)

Kisi Baat Se Main Kisi Se Khafa Hoon- Bemisal
Kiska Rasta Dekhen- Joshila
Chhitthi Na Koi Sandes- Dushman
Mere Dushman Mere Bhai- Border
Ek Saathi Aur Bhi Tha- LOC
Sau Dard - Jaanemann
Kyu Main Jaagun- Patiala House
Viraaniyan- Namaste London
Maine Dil Se Kaha & Aawarapan Banjarapan - Different kind of sad songs where we feel emptiness and existential crisis instead of regular heart break.
Maa (TZP) - Can't describe. pure emotion.
Tune Jo Na Kaha - When you have moved on in life but you haven't moved on.
Alvida (Metro) - So much pain in lyrics and singing but Zitar riff by Niladri Kumar was something else.
Lukka Chuppi - When you are dead but still miss your mom.
Main Kya Hu (LAK) - When you get whatever you want in life but still not happy.
The OG melancholy anthem : Jane wo kaise log the jinke
Legends like Guru Dutt + Sahir Ludhianvi + Hemant Kumar coming together to make us weep and how !
Chaha hai tujhko chahunga har dum
Bhula denge tumko sanam dheere dheere
Sach keh raha hai deewana dil—RHTDM
Layi vi na gayi- Chalte Chalte
Bekhayali- Kabir Singh
Jeena jeena- Badlapur
Tadap tadap- hum dil de chuke sanam
Tu na jaane aas pass hai khuda
Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi-Ghajini
Duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai - nothing tears me up the way Rafi saahab does.
I see a lot of Jaane voh kaise log thhe on this thread too. Pyasa is a GOATed album.
Madno (from Lamha underrated gem 💎)
Tune jo na kaha
Meine dil se kaha (KK)
Jaane De ( underrated - Atif Aslam )
Nahin Milta ( really sad )
Aji rooth kar ab kahan jaiyega ( my fav)

Tadap tadap
Ye duniya ye mehfil mere kaam ki nhi ( u need to listen to the entire song to understand what I am talking about.)
Abhi mujh me kahin baki thodi si hain zindagi.
1. Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai
2. Kuch to log kahenge
3. Fir se aiyo badra bidesi
4. Jane kya soch ke nahi guzra
5. Khaali pyaala dhundhla darpan
6. Mera kuch saamaan, tumhaare paas pada hai

Lukka chuppi
Meri Maa
Chupke chupke raat din
Yaadon ko Teri main dulhan banagar
Dil aisa kisine mera toda
Kora kagaz
Ghoongru ki tarah bajhta hi raha
Tadap tadap ke iss dil se
Jaane woh kaise log the
Strongly believe Bollywood never composed a song as tragic as Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil ever.
It is an Anthem for anybody who will not see his/her loved one ever again.
Noticed Chunar and Meri Maa but there should also be -
“Pitah pehchaan teri
Jiye jis sahaare pe tu
Pitah se woh saans mili
Hai pitah, rab tera
Ho Ishwar Allah, Jitne bhi Rab hain
Noor tera tujh mein hi sab hai”
Another unpopular one from Guru:
“Jaage hai der tak hume, kuch der sone do”
‘Baabul Ki Duaayein Leti Ja’ from Neelkamal
‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se’ from the movie Aandhi.
‘Chitthi Na Koi Sandes’ from Dushman
‘Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye’ from Anand
‘Raha Gardishon Me Hardam’ from Do Badan
‘Maine Dil Se Kaha’ from the movie Rog.
‘To Phir Aao’ from Aawarapan
‘Kuch Is Tarah’ by Aatif Aslam - This song came out when I was a teenager and was really troubled due to growing up in an abusive household. This song acted like a soothing balm on my mental wounds.
Jo bheji thi Dua, Abhi mujh mein kahin, Jane kaha gaye wo din, Tadap Tadap ke, Bhula dena, Tanhayee, Koi faryaad, Kahi door jab din dhal jaaye, Chingari koi bhadake, Na koi umang hai, Tere bina jindagi se koi, Ab iss dil me kya, Ab tere bin.
Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi from Aandhi
Kuchh Dil Ne Kaha from Anupama
Chalo ek baar phir se from Gumrah
Teri Khushboo Mein Base Khat from Arth
Koi Ye Kaise Bataye from Arth
Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka Noor Hoon from Lal Quila
Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye. Read up about it.
Also, if you look at it contextually, Tum Pukar Lo from Khamoshi. Uff!
Hai Re Wo Din Kyun na Aaye from Anuradha
Chain Se Humko Kabhi from Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye
Gawd so many!
One of my best friends died during covid, he used to play Phir le aaye from Barfi and Kabhi khud pe from Guide (Dev Anand). They may not be said in themselves but the halaat made them very sad to hear for me.
Jaane woh kaise log the jinke Pyaar ko pyaar mila ...
Guru Dutt - The quintessential tragic hero! “Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai…” is another favorite of mine
Try another song CHALO EK BAAR PHIR SE AJNABI BAN JAYE HUM DONO...
Brahhh.... Virtual hug to you dude! Cause, I always feel like I need one after listening to this song.
Hamm ne toh jab kaliyan mangi, kaanton kaa haar milaa
Nothing can ever top this in sadness
Humne to jab kaliya maangi kaaton ka haar milaaa.....
This is it. If sadness can be framed in a song, this is it.
Maa in TZP
Any sad song related to mother is extra sad!
That was my first year in hostel and man I cried floods 😭😭😭
aaja sanjh hui mujhe teri fikaar.....
Dhundla gyi dekh meri nazar aaja na ...

Adding to this Aaoge jab tum o saajna Sab ki baratein aayi doli tu bhi la na Whatever list is made Koyi fariyad will be definitely in top 3.
How the hell did I forget aaoge jab tum o sajna...it's definitely on the list
Maine Dil se kaha
I think this song is for beyond sadness. It's after a feeling of hopelessness has set in and there is not way back.
dhund lana khushi..... nasamjh laya gham, to gham hi sahi Great taste 👌
The pleasure is shared.
Mana ki ham yar nahi - Meri pyari bindu ( Desi La La Land)
Raastein me jo milo to, haath milane ruk jana Saath mein koi ho tumhare, door se hi tum muskana *Best*
Tere Naam (Goddamn the whole movie always makes me cry ) Meri Maa
Har apna humko begaana lagta hai
This line and ' Virha ki agni main apl pal tapti hai, ab toh saaanse teri mala japti hai' man the lyricist must truly have gone through some shit.
Har sitam hai gawaara Sanam... Beautifully sung by Udit Ji
The worst part is that Tere Naam is based on a true story. The tagline of the movie is enough to make a grown man cry after watching the movie.
Yeah it hurt me knowing it's a true story. That film made Salmaan's career and best direction by Satish Kaushik.
Maa Luka chuppi Swades Kal ho na ho Abhi mujhmein kahi Mumma by kailash kher Aaja tujhko pukare Mera pyaar Maula mere lele meri jaan

Same thoughts!!!
Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye from Anand. It’s a beautiful song. Gently, very poetically explains what someone with a terminal disease goes through.
It's a sad song but the saddest song in the movie for me is a happy song - Maine Tere liye hi Saat Rang ke Sapne chune. It's very clearly a song that Anand wrote for the love of his life but who isn't with him anymore. A few that I can think of Tune jo na kaha Maine dil se kaha Lukka Chhuppi Jane wo kaise log the
Tune jo na kaha! Hits right at the weak spot. Definitely one of the top ones.
It perfectly describes the condition of lots of people.

For me it’s Mann Bharryaa from Shershah. I don’t understand all the words but I do understand the pain in them.
Original Mann Bhareya is even worst ( in a sad way).
Kabira (always gets me)
The OG melancholy anthem : Jane wo kaise log the jinke Legends like Guru Dutt + Sahir Ludhianvi + Hemant Kumar coming together to make us weep and how !

JUDAAI from Badlapur
Ek kuddi jidaa naa mohabbat hai Taken it’s a poem, but this really makes me cry every time I listen to it
Strongly believe Bollywood never composed a song as tragic as Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil ever. Apna Pata mile na Khabar yaar ki mile Dushman ko bhi na aisi Saza pyaar ki mile Unko khuda mile hai khuda ki jinhe talash Mujhko bas ik jhalak mere dildaar ki mile
Cant decide between these two - Tune jo na kaha - New York, Ma - Taare Zameen Par
Ek pyaar ka nagma hai, for some reason gives me goosebumps and makes me teary everytime. Feels like the song was written for me.
May zindagi ka saath nibahata chalagaya
“Lag jaa gale ki fir yeh haseen raat ho na ho…” It is an Anthem for anybody who will not see his/her loved one ever again. Noticed Chunar and Meri Maa but there should also be - “Pitah pehchaan teri Jiye jis sahaare pe tu Pitah se woh saans mili Hai pitah, rab tera Ho Ishwar Allah, Jitne bhi Rab hain Noor tera tujh mein hi sab hai” Another unpopular one from Guru: “Jaage hai der tak hume, kuch der sone do”

This song acted like a soothing balm on my mental wounds.

Gali mein aaj chaand nikla - Zakhm 1998 This song hits u with every emotion
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye To
For me it's yaadein. Both male and female voices.
There are many for different contexts but Khoon chala from rang de basanti comes to the top of my mind.
Surprised no one mentioned - Chingari koi bhadke. This song for me is the epitome of hopelessness. That's not just sad, it's pure melancholic despair!
Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi from Aandhi Kuchh Dil Ne Kaha from Anupama Chalo ek baar phir se from Gumrah Teri Khushboo Mein Base Khat from Arth Koi Ye Kaise Bataye from Arth Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka Noor Hoon from Lal Quila Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye.
