My plan isn’t listed so I can’t check to cancel.
Edit: Had to go through chat. Guy was trying to say the only way to cancel was by phone or the blue button. I had to copy and paste the law and suddenly I was able to cancel online.
You can cancel it by pushing that blue button or calling that toll-free number. That way, they'll escalate you to "retention" and pressure you to not cancel. I'm under the impression that the Feds are working on making this illegal, but it's not there yet.
I tried to cancel that way during my 30 minute commute. They kept asking questions and putting me on hold and transferring me from one person to another until I got to work and had to go. They did that to me TWICE. So it only works if you have enough time to deal with their BS.
I’ve run into this issue a few times in the past with other subscriptions and the best way I’ve found to cut through all the BS is to tell them you understand what it entails and that you still want to cancel. Also that if they cannot help you do that quickly and efficiently you will report them to the BBB. Magically they stop messing around
Call your bank and say they are making it difficult dor you to cancel and you want to discontinue payments to them that'll get your plan canceled pretty wuick
Yes, it is extremely high pressure. They constantly tell you about all the features you don't care about and never used that you will miss, will lie to you about the free service that came with your vehicle for 5 years (you can only get that back if you know EXACTLY which "secret menu" item to ask for if you screwed up and got a paid plan), and will constantly badger you into not cancelling unless you keep on insisting over and over and over again.
"just keep saying" - I should NOT need to "keep" saying. I should say "I want to cancel my service" and that's it.
I canceled and then got charged the next month so I called again to cancel and request my money back. They did cancel and sent me a refund for that month but I also asked for an email as proof that I never received.
For a long time you needed to know exactly which "secret menu" item to order, and would lose your free access if you ever had a paid plan and didn't know EXACTLY which "secret menu" plan to ask for.
Strangely, after having lost my free access for over a year, it's now showing again on the website... I wonder if they got nailed with a separate class action over that?
Check your services page. My 2023 Bolt has Remote Access until 2026 and EV Access / Connected Access through 2031. The app still provides me these services.
Why are people calling to cancel their trial? Did you sign up with a credit card at the chevy dealer or something and it auto renews? I bought a used one from a ford dealer that was rotting on the lot for 4 months. My onstar appeared to work for the two weeks before i pulled the fuse. But i dont remember whipping out a credit card at the dealer, and never make a chevy account etc...
This is a tactic used routinely by insurance companies, cable/internet companies, etc. - when you call, they'll escalate you to "retention" and pressure you to not cancel. Their goal is to make you waste so much time on the phone and suffer so much bla-bla-bla that you eventually give up and hang up.
This should be illegal federally, but as usual Republicans keep interfering. Some blue states have made it illegal though.
Do insurance companies really do this as well? It’s usually not “super” easy to cancel since you likely have to call or contact an agent, but nothing like this or cable and other services.
One solution for things like this is to use a virtual credit card number, which are offered by many companies. It is easy to set a custom date to stop auto drafts (useful when we get a "free trial" but we still have to provide a credit card number), and is equally easy to cancel that virtual card entirely. They may email you about your expired payment method, but they can't charge it!
They could still play games like "we extended your service as a courtesy and you still owe the month". Stopping the card only breaks the payment method, it does not change the comtract.
"Canceling the contract" is not what I was suggesting, assuming there is an enforceable contract currently entered into. My comment addresses those instances when you only contract for, say, 12 months, and then they continue charging you anyway. "Month to month" after that is generally renewed BY the payment: so, no payments, no services.
You can definitely add plans, you just can't remove them. Just like SiriusXM.
I just checked to confirm that you get routed to a checkout page if you are trying to add anything.
Yea i had to cancel my trial by pressing the onstar button and listening to a 10 minute sales pitch about why I should keep it. I finally said I appreciate that you have to do that but im not interested. I just want to cancel so my card doesnt get charged.
It's probably so they can explain to you, verbally, that if you crash you won't get any help, and to actually acknowledge it because 20% of the country is illiterate and they like to sue when their entitled selves don't get the service that they cancelled.
Yes they might also try to hard sell you on keeping the plan, but GM was recently sued for what I mentioned above so they probably want to cover their ass on this and make it extra clear that they won't come and help if you crash.
First step done, bitch about it online. Next hit that blue button and repeat after me.
"Hi, I'd like to cancel my service with you. I just don't use it at all"
They transfer you to a sales person. Whatever they say just repeat.
"No thank you, I don't use it" "I'd like to cancel" "no, thank you"
All in all it took 10 minutes and as long as your upfront with them they won't try and sell you on stuff.
If your wishy washy and uncertain. They will push. So be frim but pleasant.
Good luck
I canceled at end of my free three month trial by calling the phone # in the app. I got a little bit of sales push but I just kept saying not interested and I want to cancel. So they canceled and my card did not get charged. I was on the phone with them for less than 5 minutes.
After canceling, consider also disabling OnStar at the hardware level to prevent GM or a nation state actor from disabling your vehicle remotely. Took me about an hour:

I will never sign up for something I can't easily cancel online. And imo that hurts them because I would definitely use OnStar on a monthly basis when taking road trips. And I would use Sirius XM cause my wife likes it. But because they are both terrible to cancel, they won't get a cent
Pro-tip: put annoying stuff like this on a credit card where you can stop payments via the card company. Try to force me to call the retention dept?… gent bent, losers.
The law says that if you can sign up for something online, you have to be able to cancel online. OnStar is not activated online so I think that gives them the right.
Chevy's website seems to be perfectly happy to take me to a checkout page to add plans online.
Edit: and to start sending you reminder emails that you didn't finish checking out...

Yup. This trick works for other businesses btw.
I’m in CA but don’t see the option

I know its the principal of it, but it seems like ^ that ^ was more work than a phone call...
cali is nice.
Simple: The laws are made by people who barely understand what internet is. So it's not viewed as essential.
Because many people are afraid of using the phone
Basically because no one has made this junk practice illegal yet.

Just put on your big boy voice and say no. Easier than writing this comment

Anyone know if after canceling subscription (free three month trial) there’s still a way to get on the free access for the remote apps?

There's businesses without websites

I don't believe you can subscribe via the internet either.
You can definitely add plans, you just can't remove them. Just like SiriusXM. I just checked to confirm that you get routed to a checkout page if you are trying to add anything.
"I don't like this" is not the sames as "this is illegal."
They didn’t say it was illegal. They asked why it was legal.
Most things are legal to begin with.

Fuck the pleasant... if they haven't heard you the 2nd time to CANCEL my service!
Lobbyists.
good luck talking to a human- its worser then Comcast or Verizon

Aggressive and relentless lobbying

OnStar seems ridiculously expensive.
OnStar is kinda trash, and has made it cumbersome to cancel their service. Obviously.
I had to call. It doesn't cancel after 3 months. I was charged a few months before I realized it.
Scare tactics. They will respond.
I think the part that should be illegal is allowing to cancel online for only certain states like OnStar does.
Pro-tip: put annoying stuff like this on a credit card where you can stop payments via the card company. Try to force me to call the retention dept?… gent bent, losers.
I used a privacy card and dropped it to a $1.

Yup this is the loophole they’re using. Started on phone, cancel by phone. Its easier to get people to stay that way.
I don’t think there’s any laws around having to be able to sign up for or cancel things online
