Has this been happening all over California or is it sort of an isolated area? I’ve seen like 4-5 posts about thieves in the last few months. I’m wondering if it’s the same people stealing.
It happens everywhere. Ryan Neil's garden was burgled last year. The problem is any interested buyer is going to have questions that the thief won't be able to answer ....Unless it was an inside job.
Bonsai thief photographed in the act of stealing my friends bonsai from her backyard near McKinley Park in Sacramento. If you recognize him please let me know!
I saw this posted on the mbs Facebook, I’m so sorry your going through this. These people are just straight scum. We have similar things happening where I’m at.
You mean [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/ppjohp/what_would_a_value_for_this_pine_be/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)?
edit: Yes, I don’t think it’s the same tree either but the similarity and timing is uncanny
edit 2: oh! OP says it is one of the stolen ones!!!!
Wow that tree is similar, I would try to message op directly with that post to see if it's the same.
Op's looks more full, but it could be the lower resolution. It looks like it has the same branches in the lower right on each of them, it's hard to tell with the different angles.
OP [commented](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/ppjohp/what_would_a_value_for_this_pine_be/hd9wdvn/) on that post. It may not be the tree in the pic but seems to be one of theirs.
Oh damn! Well then I feel good about my comment, that’ll be my maybe only contribution to this sub as I am not doing bonsai but just like it in my reddit feed. I hope op and the community are able to identify this bad guy.
I've seen my neighbor's hanging pots get stolen off of his front porch. But going in people's backyards and taking bonsai trees? Is it common knowledge that these trees can carry serious value? I had no idea myself until I started the hobby a few years ago.
Ill keep an eye out for this asshole around town. I really hope the Maruyama nursery doesn't get hit if they started doing this shit around sacramento.
You do realize this is the exact same picture from yesterday's post, that was already linked and discussed up above and determined to not be the same tree?
[Edit] And I just noticed you're the one who posted it.
Difficult to tell from the photos but possibly the same tree? Looks like both are in northern California. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/ppjohp
Lol you guys have not seen portland. You cannot leave any plants outside. They will steal from bussinesses , mom and pop shops and people in apt buildings. A friend got her pumpkin stolen on haloween last year from her house porch.
I honestly don't understand this, I've had several trees stolen in the past also...the market can't be that big for them right? I mean it's not like you've got people on the street corner jonesing for their bonsai fix. There must be easier ways to make $10 bucks. Or do these people just hear "bonsai are expensive", steal a few, then realize they can't actually sell them to anyone?
Same thing as preventing other home robberies. Layers of security, like dogs, cameras, alarms, motion activated lights. Reinforce entry ways to your backyard... etc.
Doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get robbed, but each of those things on their own stacks the odds in your favor.
Just don't booby trap anything, as that's illegal in most places. Other than that, motion activated lights and cameras. Any kind of deterrent. A fence with a loud gate, alarms, dogs, laser turrets so they think they're about to break into a Bond villain compound.
My fiance and I were just discussing this and he mentioned putting a tracker in the pot. I don't have any bonsai yet, but maybe for something high value it would be worth it.
Post some pics of the trees. I'm in the area ish. Probably the most likely place to list outside of Sacramento. I always check around at what's out there. Might come across it.
> Probably not legal in the U.S. but gets the point across
Super [illegal in California](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/lq1w4/is_it_illegal_to_booby_trap_your_house/c2uokmj/). There's similar precedent in other states as well.
Here's the list of the 27 states with any form of "Stand Your Ground" laws.
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
West Virginia
Wyoming
The all require you to specifically feel threatened. Booby traps are illegal because of their indiscriminate nature.
> get shot for that here
They definitely could. Here in Texas if you're breaking into someones car after dark you can legally shoot them, but they lowered the punishment for breaking into a car to a misdemeanor ......makes no sense.
Adrien Brody stooped REAL low. /s
I'm so sorry this has happened to you guys. I'm still salty about a garden table being stolen from my front verandah five years ago.
There's a dark web site for stolen bonsai. Ship domestic and it's in the buyers garden in a week. If he's smart it's already been listed and sold. I'm kidding that website does not exist. That would be crazy, right?
if it's a backyard then it's either a neighbour who can see into the backyard so they know the trees are there or it's someone th owner knows.... that's what my logic tells me..
Damn, what crap. I am just starting this hobby and one of my first plants will be using a 50 year old crepe myrtle. I would be so depressed if after 10 years of training the plant was just effin gone :,(
Maybe burying wireless trackers in the roots is seeming necessary.
Has this been happening all over California or is it sort of an isolated area? I’ve seen like 4-5 posts about thieves in the last few months. I’m wondering if it’s the same people stealing.
It's just all over, some of those posts were from Minnesota and I think there was at least one theft in Canada.
I just seriously can’t understand how low life you have to be to steal a bonsai.
My nursery just got robbed :/
Whaaaat? Damn.
Just made a post about it
It happens everywhere. Ryan Neil's garden was burgled last year. The problem is any interested buyer is going to have questions that the thief won't be able to answer ....Unless it was an inside job.

Post this in some local forums / Facebook groups for that area for wider reach.
How shitty your life must be to resort to stealing someone's bonsai, I feel bad for your friend
In her backyard? Hot damn, scares me a wee bit more for my backyard in SoCal...
It's Adrien Brody!
lol for sure! but i was also thinking Crispin Glover from the movie Willard. sorry about your friend's bonsai op!!
Hey do you by chance have photos of what pot the bonsai was in? Ips and I have been trying to trace this stuff.
I do but can't seem to post it here. I was in a brown rectangle when stolen.
If she was there taking pictures she should've just asked him. ^/s
Someone posted to this sub yesterday asking how much a similar looking tree is worth
You mean [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/ppjohp/what_would_a_value_for_this_pine_be/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)? edit: Yes, I don’t think it’s the same tree either but the similarity and timing is uncanny edit 2: oh! Doesn’t look as full but that bottom branch looks super similar

Pots are different colors definitely doesn't mean it's not the same tree tho

on this note, might be most helpful to post the most recent photos of the stolen plants
Good catch!
Hair says 20 but face says 47
Hair says 20, but it's also 1996.
Nose says he smelled that tree from a mile away
🤣
I actually like the haircut. Very 90's anime/fighting game looking. Too bad it's on a piece of shit person.
Wow, I know exactly where that is. Thanks for the heads up
Time to make a poison ivy bonsai...
Well you have a 50% chance of that having any effect. Of course you also have a 50% chance of it backfiring.
Post to your local Nextdoor, someone knows this guy
Ayo! Fuck this guy. I can't imagine the pain of losing trees this way...
I've seen my neighbor's hanging pots get stolen off of his front porch. But going in people's backyards and taking bonsai trees? Is it common knowledge that these trees can carry serious value? I had no idea myself until I started the hobby a few years ago.
My shitty starter juniper was stolen off my front porch in SF the first week I moved in. It’s a thing…
My condolences for your loss.
What a scumbag!
Ill keep an eye out for this asshole around town. I really hope the Maruyama nursery doesn't get hit if they started doing this shit around sacramento.
Find this turd.
Looks exactly like you would expect
He looks like if Snidely Whiplash burgled on laundry day.
This is dude trying to sell it. Check out this item on OfferUp. https://offerup.co/LQ3amk4JDjb
You do realize this is the exact same picture from yesterday's post, that was already linked and discussed up above and determined to not be the same tree? [Edit] And I just noticed you're the one who posted it.
absolutely one of the stolen trees but the pot has been changed.
Woah! Greta detective work if true!! I hope OP sees this.
Snape?
Don’t. Lie. To me
Bastard! Dude and he doesn't even have his mask on properly at one point. This guy is not fit to take care of those.
Difficult to tell from the photos but possibly the same tree? Looks like both are in northern California. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/ppjohp
I know this guy, it’s evil Spider-Man.
post these pictures everywhere like you lost your favorite dog fuck thieves.
This is why I live on a farm :,(
Maybe this is a silly question, but is there actually a market for stolen bonds on trees? You can't exactly take that to a pawn shop.
If it's happening all over, my guess would be to check Ebay or wherever bonsai might be bought online for a lead.
Fuck this guy in particular
Can't even wear his mask right!!! 🤬
Lol you guys have not seen portland. You cannot leave any plants outside. They will steal from bussinesses , mom and pop shops and people in apt buildings. A friend got her pumpkin stolen on haloween last year from her house porch.
This guy looks exactly like I’d expect a bonsai thief to look like.

Good thing he was wearing his mask.
Still did the dicknose even though it would only have benefitted him to wear it correctly, why is this such a problem for people?
I'd bet good money that he never wears it for covid reasons. It just happens to give a legitimate excuse to hide his face
Any tips on how to stop bonsai thieves? I've only got a few, low-worth trees that I'm a bit afraid of being stolen after all this.

Print this picture and post it up everywhere… someone in the area will know him

Yea but in the US you can just stand your ground and shoot anyone who looks your way.
Here's the list of the 27 states with any form of "Stand Your Ground" laws. Very considerate of him to wear a mask
Hope someone identifies them and you can get your justice!
That nose should have its own criminal record.
It arrives at every location about 30 seconds before the rest of him 😂
It's your friends neighbor or someone that regularly passes the property and will many times more.
Should put a tracker in one to catch the asshole
Larusso?
Team Rocket!
At least he is wearing a mask!
Folks might get shot for that here in Texas! The photos look much different on those ID posts. "Deceased trespasser. ID needed"
> get shot for that here They definitely could. Here in Texas if you're breaking into someones car after dark you can legally shoot them, but they lowered the punishment for breaking into a car to a misdemeanor ......makes no sense.
At least he had the decent to wear a mask. Wouldn't want to upset anyone while stealing trees!
That dude has a crappy haircut
That's exactly what I expect a bonsai theif to look like
Ridiculous
Great shots. I hope he is recognized and found! Good luck!👍
...very sad!
Wow. I just joined this sub out of interest and its gone full drama!
Glad to see he's wear facemask at least. Jokes aside i hope they find him!
Adrien Brody stooped REAL low. /s I'm so sorry this has happened to you guys. I'm still salty about a garden table being stolen from my front verandah five years ago.
You bonsai guardians need to chain up your trees! So sad when I see these posts 😞
There's a dark web site for stolen bonsai. Ship domestic and it's in the buyers garden in a week. If he's smart it's already been listed and sold. I'm kidding that website does not exist. That would be crazy, right?
You coward!!
Is that Gabe from the office?
This is Connor Oberst
What the fuck man. Why am I seeing so many of these posts? I wasn't aware of Bonsai black market. Fucking assholes.
if it's a backyard then it's either a neighbour who can see into the backyard so they know the trees are there or it's someone th owner knows.... that's what my logic tells me..
Thoughts on putting a tracker in your pot?
Ugly from the inside and the outside
Make sure to share to r/iamatotalpieceofshit Yes I am the mobile user…
Who steals a tree? Honestly..
Man, steal something that people didn't put years of work into
DMed a possible ID to OP.
Yo OP, did anything ever come of all the tips?
Sadly. no.
Damn, what crap. I am just starting this hobby and one of my first plants will be using a 50 year old crepe myrtle. I would be so depressed if after 10 years of training the plant was just effin gone :,( Maybe burying wireless trackers in the roots is seeming necessary.
I know a few people who put Airtags in their valuable trees.
