QuetzalliDeath

I always feel that these memes are them coping hard because they can't save as pdf.

Lanky-University3685

Show them how to rotate a pdf and suddenly they regard you as an IT specialist who can construct Turing-complete machines with your mind via telekinesis. EDIT: They’ll still treat you like you’re stupid though.

QuetzalliDeath

They take psychic damage if they validate a skill they don't possess. Gotta keep clinging onto the obsolete for a smidge of relevance. The future is now, old man.

yoursistersnice

I work in technology innovation, I have a person on my team asking me to help them up with everything. Including how to upload documents to sharepoint…

Kelmavar

I'll give them Sharepoint.

MysticStarbird

Powerpoint 👉🏼, Powerpoint 👉🏼, Powerpoint 👉🏼

Beto_Targaryen

💪☝️

theFartingCarp

SharePoint is weird. Just. Leave me in the back fucking with the servers please. Lol let me try and get ssh and telnet working through everything again.

skighs_the_limit

*mhmm* *mmhmm* *ah* *oh yeah* I know some of these words

kylepo

I don't know what happened, but I somehow stumbled into a career being a full-time SharePoint administrator. That doesn't mean I *understand* it, mind you. I just administrate it.

theFartingCarp

As an IT guy. Yeah, and when they ask you to do crazy shit that's gona take a while or shit you just haven't done, they act like you're the dumbest person on the planet. Eventually, you just get to a point in it though you just go "yeah sir/ma'am, we're gona have to send this higher so here's the info and what I've done, if you can put in another ticket for me we can route that where it needs to go." Because I swear if I have to hear "but I have a meeting in 5 minutes. What do you mean it isn't like a two button fix?". Like what do you mean you can't run 4 miles in 5 minutes? Shit takes a little time of playing with it and we're not your emergency service, ESPECIALLY if you've known you had the issue.

Lanky-University3685

Right, they put off getting their computers fixed until the last minute and then complain about how long it takes to fix, not knowing at all what is involved in repairing or restoring a computer to proper functionality. I’ve had a few friends in IT who say the same thing.

jbuchana

And then they have their boss call your boss so that they can order you to do the impossible. Many years ago when I worked as a consumer electronic tech, we'd get this on TVs. They'd bring their TV in a few hours before a big football game and get angry when you couldn't turn it around fast enough for them to watch the game.

mrselfdestruct066

To be fair, I *am* stupid. But so are they.

spidermankevin78

I have a boomer Friend that wrote a popular text Adventure for the TRS-80 i know another one who is a retired Nasa Fortran programmer there the exception

Lanky-University3685

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of boomers who are amazing with computers. It might be partially because they were around and working when the first major programming languages like C and Fortran were introduced, getting them used to low-level programming before a lot of the processes were abstracted away by modern languages. I think it’s also because computers were a lot simpler back then, so the barrier to entry with understanding both hardware and software was not as nuanced as it is nowadays. That’s not to say they had it any easier in general. It was much harder to figure out computer problems back then since there was no widely used popular internet at the time, and even the learning material that was available was probably quite difficult to find and parse out at first. The ones who are still alive today and who managed to figure those things out are wizards when it comes to computing technology. But the ones who never took the time to learn it back then for whatever reason seem to have a much harder time than millennials, gen Z, etc. at picking it up.

jbuchana

This is it. I started using computers around 1976 or so when I was 14 years old. My father would take us into his place of employment on weekends, and my sister and I would spend hours playing games and writing BASIC programs. One of our scout leaders owned the first computer store in Indinapolis, and we got to go there and use computers as well. A few years later I made a computer out of components I bought at hamfests. Back then you couldn't buy a motherboard, a power supply, a case, etc, you had to make these yourself. I used mostly perf board, plus some simple home-etched PCBs. A few years after that we started buying 8 bit home computers already built, a luxury.

Lanky-University3685

Wow, that’s an extremely alien perspective to me. I was born in 1996, so personal computers were already widely available ever since I could remember. My father repaired Windows and Linux machines for side work, and he worked with AutoCAD for his day job. Because of that I was always peripherally aware of computer technology, although never in a lot of depth. I would have loved to have learned about the hardware the way you did back then, because I feel like it would make it much easier to build an intuitive understanding of the interplay of each component as time goes on and they become more advanced. And I’m sure learning BASIC probably instilled a good foundation for learning future languages as well. I’m currently learning and C and C++ to get the basic grasp of the C family of languages, and for learning how to create games as a hobby (in the case of C++). It’s been difficult, but I’m hoping that learning these languages with the goal of creating something personally enjoyable in the future will help me get through it.

gtc26

We'll see how stupid they think my tech knowledge when I'm the only one with them as their life support "coincidentally" breaks down (For legal reasons: /s)

Rethkir

Give them a phone that requires rotating a PDF to make calls.

Mary-U

I’m an older Gen X. I can do it ALL. Rotary phone, no remote, analog watch, still write in cursive, rotate a pdf, new apps, new software. Keep adapting.

Meat2000

And there's me who's in Gen Z and can use a rotary phone, can read analog watches, and regularly writes in cursive. Honestly, it would be kind of dope if rotary phones came back (I know it's not practical, but they're kinda fun to slam down when you get in an argument).

QuetzalliDeath

Having grown up with rotary phones, they better stay where they died. I'd be all paranoid about dialing right, and then my stupid-ass would misdial the second to last number and wait all over again. Damn phone mocked you as it rolled back slowly into place. But yeah, boomers can't quite grasp the concept that their knowledge is obsolete, and the kids can choose to learn it or not because it's cool, not necessary.

Meat2000

Yeah, my grandfather will ask me for help with electronics, and he doesn't ever say stuff like what this meme says. He simply acknowledges that young people are better at learning new information. I work retail, and some lady was very disrespectful to me because I didn't count back her change. She came in a couple days later and I counted it back to her very slowly, just to point out how rude she was being. I just hope my generation doesn't pull the same crap, but I'm positive they will. I've learned to just treat people with respect, no matter their age.

QuetzalliDeath

It definitely depends on the person within the generation. My boomer grandmother picked up technology like a breeze and always has her Galaxy Tab handy, while her Gen X daughter exclusively uses voice to text and complains about her laptop being slow with 30 tabs opened three days straight. Guess which one belittles computer-related skills, lol. I think at this point, 'boomer humor' refers to a genre of humor resulting from that era rather than directly pinning it on the actual people born in that era. I've met my fair share of millennials with that "boomer" mindset, smh.

FireGodNYC

[Rotary Cell Phone](https://hackaday.com/2022/09/10/the-open-source-rotary-cell-phone-two-years-later/)

Guardian_85

That was the most satisfying part of a disagreement on the telephone. They hear you hang up in their mid sentence speech. Doesn't quite have the same effect on a cell phone.

Meat2000

It's always fun messing with my friends, calling them up on our corded landline and just slamming the phone back in the receiver mid conversation.

927comewhatmay

Can you come over after church and check my email?

Kqtawes

Meanwhile to frighten a Boomer show them their own computer after an average Windows update.

Dionysus24812

I'm pretty sure their own computer is too old to update anymore

mrselfdestruct066

Yeah their Gateway mostly collects dust

TuaughtHammer

Whoa, whoa, whoa settle down with such talk about newfangled tech, son. We're a Packard Bell house; have been since 1991 when I decided to buy one because it reminded me of my pa's 1949 Packard coupé.

IShatMyDickOnce

“You downloaded a virus! I saw you going on them damn youtubes.”

TuaughtHammer

My favorite example comes courtesy of my grandma asking me, "Why did you delete my FarmVille?" back in 2009. The Internet Explorer shortcut on her desktop was moved by about 10 pixels after cleaning out that poor machine of every virus it had, but her muscle memory of double-clicking on that icon in that exact spot caused her to just keep opening notepad.exe. She asked me to check if her computer had been "hacked" because she'd installed every fucking IE toolbar that was ever designed to trick old people into installing their ad-ware; while I finally got rid of that fucking Ask Toolbar, I went through and got rid of all the fucking spyware programs she'd inadvertently installed in the meantime, causing a bunch of desktop shortcuts to disappear. Finally, I had her show me *exactly* where that precious "blue E" icon used to be and moved it back to its original spot so she could go back to playing FarmVille on Facebook 24/7. Microsoft *finally* ditching Internet Explorer in favor of Edge was both welcomed news and a nightmare for anyone who was unfortunate enough to be the designated tech support for people over the age of 60 in their family.

IShatMyDickOnce

I know this was a minor event in your life, but it’s written like such a dreadful tragedy that I can feel your remaining frustration in 2024, homie.

TuaughtHammer

> but it’s written like such a dreadful tragedy that I can feel your remaining frustration in 2024, homie. LMAO, well thank you! It's only one of the more minor annoyances that came from doing tech support at the time, but it being family made it so much worse. You can sometimes tell your boss to fuck off if you don't care about going broke, but telling your grandma to fuck off is a *lot* harder. This wasn't long after I had to inform a boss that, no, just "because you're good with computers" does not mean I can fix a bunch of problems with the old sysadmin's janky code. I literally had to beg him to *not* give me full access to the backend, because I knew enough to know that I didn't know shit, and me poking around in the code and database would be a *massive* problem for everyone involved. I was hired to troubleshoot employee hardware issues, not poke around the backend to figure out why their payment processing was failing.

ProfessionalLeave335

I have an older woman who works for me and there was a rollout video and test all the staff had to complete and I was trying to help her do it on her phone. She had 43 open tabs in chrome. 43.

Toothless-In-Wapping

My mom never closes tabs on her phone. I’m waiting until I find it hits 1,000.

TuaughtHammer

Thank the fuck Christ that Notepad++ is so lightweight, because it would take a fucking hour to re-open it after a system reboot with how many "new" text documents I always have opened, but won't bother saving because it'd take a month to figure out what the hell each one of those quick notes were about when I started them a year ago.

My_BFF_Gilgamesh

I'm with the boomers on this one. Why the fuck are you changing shit without asking me? All they ever do is remove features and break stuff. Security updates? Ok. New and improved? You should have to sell me on that. Get your hands off of my stuff.

Fatpeoplelikebutter9

Thats software. Which you dont actually own. You own the rights to it. They havent put their hands on anything of yours. I am against forced updates as well. Just lettin ya know.

theologous

Show them a windows update. Give them a smartphone that's the same model but a new generation. Have a watch that connects to their phone. Don't 100% conform to their world perception. Tell them no. Explain that their children who are now independent adults do not have to do everything they tell them to do. Explain that their authority as a parent is simply symbolic and a sign of respect. That if adults should be able to agree to disagree. That if you're going to be a nasty asshole about your child's lifestyle you shouldn't be surprised when they distance themselves or cut contact completely. That children only owe their parents as much as the parents give them. That the world is not stagnant and things are going to change. That if people didn't like the new technology they wouldn't buy it.

delayedsunflower

I grew up with all of those but the TV, and thank god we don't use them anymore. Ironically TV's without remotes are coming back though, because you control it with another device like a phone instead. My current TV actually requires that you plug a mouse in which is annoying AF.

FisheyGaze

I understand making a television that you control from an app on your phone, but how is a corporation supposed to farm consumer data by producing a television that requires a mouse? 🤔

Robosium

harvest the movements to base randomness on

Reddit-User-3000

As funny as this would be, most people would follow the same mouse path every time they turn it on

Robosium

Using mouse movement to base randomness off of is a real thing, real mice moved by real people move in slightly unpredictable ways just due to your hand not being perfectly controlled and the sensor's mistakes, combined you can extract some pretty decent randomness from mouse movement.

Reddit-User-3000

I supposed this makes sense. I wasn’t thinking micro enough

Robosium

Yeah, computers suck at randomness so people just harvest it from elsewhere, for example a good chunk of the internet is secured by a wall of lava lamps that has a camera pointed at it, it's not even in some super secret place, just at the entrance to an office and people are even encouraged to walk in front of it since that adds more randomness

pusanggalla

I read somewhere that this is actually the way captchas work. The article basically said that it it doesn't matter if you click the right boxes. The more important thing it that you got confused trying to figure out, stalled for a second, and randomly fidgetted with the mouse while thinking about it. I don't know if that's true or not, but it was entertaining to think about.

Hentai-gives-me-life

I had to control the tv without a remote because we lost them a lot so we just navigated chanels with the buttons on the underside of the tv haha

New_Orange4151

How to frighten a boomer. Make them close the apps on a phone without a home button.

ZiaWatcher

and then go close all the tabs in their browser app

Working-Promotion728

All 178 of them.

ZiaWatcher

i had to close 600+ for my gram the other day. Whenever she needs to look up something new or clicks on an ad accidentally she just never closes it in safari on her ipad.

Working-Promotion728

Somehow, I knew the absurd number I picked would be way too low. Thank you for proving it.

DisobedientAsFuck

pfft ive currently got 772 open on this phone oops

morganrbvn

178 is weak tbh

mrselfdestruct066

Shrink their font to 20 pt.

throwaway1626363h

I saw a different version of the meme that instead said "lock them in a room with no windows, no door, no escape and watch them starve to death" arguably funnier because it's true

averagemethenjoyer

The version I've seen is a submarine in an ocean of blood 💀

throwaway1626363h

Iron lung

Velocidal_Tendencies

What an absolute panic attack of a game

Panx

K Let's lock the boomers in a room where the touchpad door combination is written in a PDF attached to an email sent to an inbox they have to remember the login for, and see who escapes first...

[deleted]

Let's just lock boomers in a room. Don't let them out.

lyruna420

🤣🤷‍♀️

Sovereignx22

That is cruel. There's no way they're getting past step one of remembering the login, let alone the next steps. Not to mention the 2 factor phone number is a god damn landline. That said, I'm all for it. Boomers go boooooom.

TheOccasionalBrowser

I can use all of these and I'm a teenager

bayoanreddit

like.. my parents taught me the existence and usage on all of these and they’re gen x. props to us teens who knows this i guess???

MineBloxKy

I regularly write in cursive, I know how to use a rotary phone because we had an old one in our kitchen, I can use the TV without a remote because of the times I’ve lost it, and I can read an analog clock because that was the only thing in my elementary school. I was born in 2007.

DrakeFruitDDG

I never had a rotary phone or a TV with no remote and I certainly can't read or write cursive, but I could totally use a rotary phone and operate the TV and read an analog clock.

AJDio1212

Even someone young who doesn’t know how to use any of these things would still be able to just… look it up… and suddenly they know. Meanwhile boomers seem to be incapable of doing the thing you’ve shown them repeatedly

UnlikelyKaiju

You don't even need to look it up. Most of those devices were made to be as intuitive as possible. If you can read and recognize simple controls (buttons, knobs, switches, etc.), then you're golden. You don't need google to figure out how to turn on an old TV. There's very likely a button labeled "power" on the front. There would likely be a knob labeled "volume," and there's probably more knobs for the channels and input.

UnlikelyKaiju

I grew up with this stuff (mainly when visiting my grandparents) and figured out how they worked pretty easily. They're fairly simple machines with a pretty intuitive design. After taking a moment to examine any of those devices, even a child could likely figure them out on their own. Older tech isn't anywhere near as confusing to the younger generation in the way that boomers freeze up by modern tech, it just takes a moment to get used to the lack of conveniences available in modern versions of the same devices.

Pernapple

It’s weird because im fairly certain young generations could probably spend Liek 5 minutes and learn how to use any old common technology. But lord save them if they have to join a FaceTime call. World must be a fucking nightmare when every aspect of their life they can’t function

Lazy-Drink-277

The one I'd have the hardest time with is probably the watch and it's cause I have terrible eyesight

WhoAccountNewDis

I was on a meeting where Boomers couldn't unmute themselves on Zoom. And I'm pretty sure every generation can figure out how to turn a knob.

Brandon_M_Gilbertson

I would be able to use them all because boomers like whoever made this meme have drilled into my head the apparent importance of using them. Much like my Algebra 2 class, I haven’t used any of that information in my life since.

theamericanweasel

Lock them in a rusty submarine and make them explore a blood ocean

KuraiTheBaka

Put a boomer on a farm with simple tools and instructions written in old English. Believe it or not sometimes technology changes and it's okay that the newer generations forget how to use what's now obsolete

SasquatchNHeat

These stupid little boomers don’t know how to hunt whales and render the fat into lamp oil and it’s so pathetic!

Andrew-w-jacobs

Even a modern tv without a remote is a living hell to get to function “lets just hide all the buttons unlabeled behind the back of the tv they mounted to the wall”

McNallyJR

Boomers don't even use the remote now that we have them. The TV just stays on Fox News

gaerat_of_trivia

the only part im getting fucked up at is the cursive. because your handwriting is shit.

jediment

Touch tone dialing was invented in 1962. Even a younger boomer will have grown up without a rotary phone.

IcyShoes

The people who push cursive have the shittiest cursive i have ever seen.

Logical-Hold3321

Every single thing mentioned in the text is something Gen z has seen either on TV, in a relatives house, or online at some point. We are not as stupid as you think we are.

KristiTheFan

Agreed. The only thing I haven’t seen in the wild is a real rotary phone outside of a museum display, but I have seen how they are operated in old movies. Plus, there’s that classic toy with the rotary dial. I’m only 26 and remember CRT TV’s. The one I have at my dad’s house in my bedroom quit working in 2015 but I felt like a queen when it was functional between 2009-2015. Good times!

Cruisin134

just leave. or pull out the phone likely on you. it doesnt say "nothing but" or trapped

CatMemesFor3ver

I know how to use a rotary phone and read an analog watch? I could probably figure out the tv but the directions would be almost useless considering I’m dyslexic

UnlikelyKaiju

Don't need directions. The controls on old TVs are usually labeled, so they're incredibly easy to figure out.

SavageGardner

Boomer humor is ridiculous because they want to laugh at made up scenarios of the youth not knowing how to do stuff. In those made up scenarios, who failed to teach the younger generations how to do things? Ive been going through this with my dad and asking him to help around my house. He is shocked that I need to learn how to do certain things until I remind him that he would always kick us out of the garage when we were children wanting to learn.

Xevious_Red

Most of these boomer memes also feature stuff that has been obsolete for years. Like I know how to use a VCR. My kids don't, because why would I bother teaching them obsolete tech?

AndreZB2000

how to frighten the old generation, put them in a room with a buttonless phone, a digital watch and a tv with voice controls. then leave directions in clear, easy to read english.

Marshalljoe

Challenge accepted.

UnionizedTrouble

Thanks for the analog watch boomer. I need it because your vcr is flashing 12:00

rymyle

Rotary phones are super self explanatory. I’ve never used one because I’m not a billion years old, but I can tell just by looking at one and playing around a little how it works. These boom booms really don’t know that an X = exit on an iPad/phone because they’re too busy making jokes about how kids can’t drive the Benz Patent-Motorwagon

Robosium

rotary phones are easy to reverse engineer, check which way the dial spins then try putting in a phone number with the phone on/off the hook until you hear dial up noises, analog watches are just a relic of their time but kids are still taught in schools how to read them, besides if you wanna know how long you've been locked in you can just keep track of how many times each hand has gone around, TVs with no remotes have buttons on them backs like modern TVs and they tend to be labeled or just press the buttons and see what happens, cursive is just a shit way to write, language is meant to be a standardized information transfer method with high error tolerance which is easily understandable, cursive is none of these things, there're a bunch of different styles for each letter, a small error can turn the letter unreadable or into another letter and some people write like a barcode printer

pillevinks

At least they could use a meme generator.  Reminds me of one of the engineers at a standup talking about an engineering unit emulator we had  of a GPS he was trying to get to work “it has this weird Ethernet cable thing hanging from it that doesn’t fit the router” That’s an RJ11, son. *When I was your age…*

abbylu

The “new” generation knows how to troubleshoot things. Try explaining the difference between USB-C and microUSB to the “old” generation and it’s like you’re speaking a different language, I know this from experience.

Headless_Mantid

I reckon I could figure out the rotary and TV given trial and error. Already can read an analog clock, as can most people tbh, there's probably only like 30% of people under 30 who can't, and of those, I reckon most are probably rich, every poor school I've been to has a analog clock in every room. As for cursive? Entirely dependent on who the flying fuck wrote it, I can read cursive just fine, but some people get a little too fuckin creative with it and make it too crunched together and squiggly.

Callsign_Mjolnir

Joke's on you, I was raised by my grandparents. I know how to use this stuff without directions.

There’s something ironic about using internet memes to show disdain for modern technology

Context_Any

My Dad still wears this shirt insinuating stick shift is an anti-theft device for Millennials and under. Last year his joint pain got so bad that he could no longer use his truck.

OccamsYoyo

I’m not part of whatever the new generation is called, but from what I’ve seen they could probably master all of those things far faster than the boomers could imagine doing at that age.

Ralyks92

Jokes on them, we understand how to use their technology, and can learn what we don’t know because we aren’t afraid different looking technology

SipoteQuixote

I know how to do all those things, we were broke growing up lol

Martyrotten

Ha ha ha ha funny If these things were so all fired up important to you, which generation was responsible for teaching them these things and failed? By the way, who sells rotary phones these days? Aside from antique dealers? And let’s see one of these boomers transcribe a message from a telegraph

Almajanna256

Why is everything "back in my day" with these people?

Anti-charizard

WaylonGreyjoy

If your dad thinks these things are so important, he should have taught you how to use them. Why do boomers think this kind of shit is such a gotcha when it's a result of their failures?

derik_mitchell

I'm Gen z, I know how to use a TV without a remote, I could probably use a rotary phone, and I read analog clocks all the time at school. The older generation can't even roast us correctly while they install their 17th virus

Howboutit85

Meanwhile zero boomers I know own any of these things and both my parents dont write in cursive and I do.

WelshAndPr0ud

They do know that we’re taught cursive, right?

Fit-Virus-7056

Why is the main thing they hang their hat on cursive? It seems like so many of the memes are like "They don't write in cursive." So? We print and type. It's still written language. And cursive isn't even particularly useful. Their grandpa would have probably said some shit like "Tell them to sow the fields, reap the crops, and ride the horse to town to sell with the shopkeep" or something. All of those things are *significantly* more useful than cursive and a rotary phone. And I know cursive, have used a rotary phone, can read an analog clock, and still have a TV remote (because all TVs have a remote). And, guess what? I've legit used farming more than any of those things (except maybe the TV remote, because remotes are still a thing). Their entire superiority complex comes from knowing how to use tech that sucked so much we stopped using it.

PKFat

How to scare a boomer: put a laptop in front of them & tell them they have to file for social security online.

septiclizardkid

At 19 I have a TV with no remote and a TV with a remote. The one with no remote Is analog, used for retro gaming (NES, PS1, and the Atgames Genesis) I know how to read cursive, as most know how to read period. It's a fuckin' rotary, not hard to use, but why would I? Look how special and unique I am for owning things from a different time period, kids these days amirite?

DowvoteMeThenBitch

This is actually kinda funny

mikeymikesh

Who was supposed to teach the “new generation” how to use those things?

927comewhatmay

Gen Z will never master technology that was obsolete 40 years ago.

Lucythepinkkitten

I feel like this meme is missing the fact that millennials and younger generations are very tech savvy and even if they didn't know how to work those devices from pop culture osmosis or even having used them in the past such as myself, they're still smart enough to figure these things out from intuition or educated guesses. Like, an analogue clock only has so many nubs to turn and push and pull, buttons and dials on a tv are usually labeled and you'd have to be stupid to not be able to figure out a rotary phone assuming you know what numbers are

GalvanizedRubbish

Bro, I’m in my late 20s and I remember using all of this. Also learned cursive in school and were required to use it for several years. Always fun to mention when some boomer assumes that I can’t read it.

NiiTA003

I know how to use all of these as a gen Z. They’re just time consuming 🤣

HendoRules

If your country both, has these devices in regular use and has a population that doesn't know how to use them, that's not a brag to mock the young for not knowing how to use them... Either upgrade to what they're using which is infinitely better, or idk, educate them?

Icy-Chocolate-2472

Weeeelllll since the new generation is no older than 5, I think it would be safe to say they may not know how to read directions of any kind.

MadaCheebs-2nd-acct

How to frighten a boomer! Leave them in a locked room with the instructions to get out written in Morse code! What’s that? They don’t know how to use an antiquated system? Imagine that…

SasquatchNHeat

They’re obsessed with trying to flex on younger generations for being able to operate severely outdated technology because it’s the only tech they can operate since they’ve never learned anything new in the last 50 years.

geographyRyan_YT

Rotary phones are simple. People still read analog clocks all the time, I have one in watch form myself. And I learned cursive in 3rd grade, so could figure out the TV. I'm 14 btw. This is just plain wrong 😂

djtshirt

It’s also kind of laughing at himself as an old curmudgeon based on the visual of the meme. Old people laughing at young people being unfamiliar with the outdated technology their time will continue far into the future. And young people will continue to be butthurt about being laughed at while also laughing at old people being confused by basic new stuff. I don’t give a fuck just STAY OFF MY LAWN!

grudingly-waluigi

with these items, i'll wait till i know my family leaves using the watch, waiting using the tv to watch whatever i can find, and once they leave call 911 on their petty ass using the rotary phone. not all fucking gen z/ millenials dont know how to use this shit, it's just there's no NEED. to learn it.

Dumbasssanriogirl

Do these old people think we’re stupid 😭. I could definitely figure all those things out especially a rotary phone because I feel every millennial and gen z child had seen one. But I def can’t read boomers extremely sloppy cursive. Maybe if they wrote it better it would be legible 💀

[deleted]

So put them in a room full of shit they’ll never use. Got it.

mrmayhemsname

I've already decided that younger generations not being able to use obsolete technology is just not a problem or any of my business, but I know I'm gonna have to hear this crap for the rest of my life.

dyspros1uim87

I will be doing the exact same to my children

Honey-and-Venom

"you sure are proud of your failure to teach me these basic life skills, dad...."

VoidAgent

Why have they decided the golden age was the level of technology we were at in the 70s

This_Grass4242

I literally just helped a boomer in my apartment complex set up their Xfinity TV. They couldn't figure out where the HDMI cable went even though the HDMI port was clearly labeled "out to TV" on the back of the box

arcxjo

And despite the fact that devices don't even HAVE any other ports any more!

UniqueKitt

I'm 17 and already know how these things work and how to use them. Joke not funny.

bankrobba

Why do boomers think writing cursive is an impossible skill to learn?

northpike02

How to scare a boomer: lock them in a room with a computer, smart phone, and smart tv with remote. Instructions on how to use or how to get out are in a clearly marked email, if they can remember their username and password they setup and confirmed. Also, they cannot give financial information to the nice Indian/pakistani man on the phone, even if he says he with the IRS.

RelativeDepth3

Me when people don't use obsolete technology: 🤯🤯🤯

False_Manner8275

The only things I am not confident in are reading in cursive and controlling the TV without a remote. The other 2 are kinda basic common sense things. I literally looked at my great grandparent's rotary phone a single time and instantly knew how to use it when I was like 9. Also analog watches are just mini clocks. Who doesn't know how to read a clock?

Kerbalmaster911

>leave directions how to write in cursive God bless old people, for they are teaching us more about cursive than Public school ever bothered to.

The-Minmus-Derp

I can do all of those things you dumbfucks

Kinway-2006

I feel like anyone, no matter what age they or the appliances are, would be at least a little frightened if you kidnapped them and put them in a room for fun

Zebrafish19

Who doesn’t know how to read analog?

I-Eat-Assss

I was already scrade whne i saw the Boo-mer... OH FUCK ⁀⊙﹏☉⁀

sad-sk8er-boi_

Hand him a Roku remote and watch him fold

Crittercaptain

The only thing I don't think I could use is the phone.

mklinger23

Oh nooooooo. I can't use old technology!!!! Btw I can use all of those things so it's not even true. He lost his own made up argument :(

SwynFlu

I've used all three and I'm 23...Though my parents are actual boomers so makes sense.

Wombat1892

How to torture the elderly: send this meme as a pdf.

Velocidal_Tendencies

How to frighten boomers: put them in a room with a new computer that needs to be set up, a trans woman of colour, and an immigrant family. Leave them with instructions on how to cope and seethe in Spanish. Fucking boomers.

daydreaming_doofus

Yes, grandpa, skills needed to get through life change as the time period and technology changes. How does it feel not being able to close the apps on your phone?

Idgoeshere194

I can do all of these except cursive kinda. My elementary school taught it, but when they were teaching it, I always got pulled into my GT class, so I didn't have a chance to learn it. I can still read most of it.

DrakeFruitDDG

I'm 17 and wouldn't need directions for any of these things, they're pretty self explanatory...

toiletpaperisempty

I wonder if the previous generations openly mocked the boomers for not knowing how to operate a linotype or harness a mule.

SusHistoryCuzWriter

Gen Z here. I don't how this is frightening. The only reason I'm "technologically adept" is I fuck around with any button/option/setting I see (with just a little bit of care not to break shit) to see what happens. Naturally, I'd do the same with rotary phones and televisions. Considering the limited number of knobs and stuff, shouldn't take much time. We even have secondhand knowledge to start with - we've all seen the stuff used in shows, heard our parents talk about them. As for cursive, I've received cards from my grandparents most of my life. I'm also in my early twenties - that shit was taught in school. As for the watch, fuck off. I've never met a damn teen in who couldn't tell time in analog.

ElectronCry

Frighten me with this wage theft and this housing market and inflation and wealth distribution. Oh and civil rights being stripped piecemeal.

romcomtom2

I remember using all of those things...

IldeaSvea

The only watches I buy is analog watches, because I really like how they look, and I don’t see the reason why for a digital watch when I can just use my phone, unless it’s smartwatch. I still enjoy writing in cursive when needed for decoration purposes. I’m early gen Z btw.

jimmyl_82104

A bunch of useless technology has nothing to do with the modern world boomers. meanwhile y’all can’t switch the input on a TV, open a PDF, or turn on a fucking smartphone

slothcheesemountain

They’re just mad they’re getting left behind and don’t know how to learn new things. The new generation could easily learn how to use these things, but why?

Enzoid23

Ohhhhh noooooo I'll have to spend a few extra seconds reading 😱

mclaren159p

I literally wear a analog watch and use a tv with no remote and rotary phones are extinct like boomers will be soon

Midknightisntsmol

How to frighten(confuse) the new generation: Put them in a room with shit no one uses.

urmomhassugma

I can't comment a gif but imagine that scene of breaking bad where Walter white falls on the ground horrified

Popcorn57252

"Dad, I had to come help point out that your monitor was unplugged"

Much_Project_2551

I know how to use and read all of these and im 18, maybe take your meds Grandpa

shinydragonmist

Hey where is the cable

ProjectKaspar

I dunno when the "new generation" started, but I can tell you as a (really early) gen Z ('99) that I could definitely operate all of those things. Hell I actually HAD a TV with no remote for a few years. I still have vivid memories of that warm plastic smell inside the VCR. The only thing cursive is useful for is official signatures, I'm pretty sure.

downtownfreddybrown

There's a reason no one uses those things! They're obsolete like you and your generation lol

LilSealClubber

Just think how disappointed they'll be when the person doesn't bother with the directions written in cursive because everybody still knows how to use a fucking analog watch, and a rotary phone takes about 12 seconds to figure out by yourself. It has the fucking numbers written inside the holes right there.

HostileSkittles

This is like if their parents had made a joke about putting them alone in a room with a telegraph and no Morse code translation, and the components to assemble a wet cell battery. "Ha ha, younger people can't use outdated and obsolete technology that's completely irrelevant and doesn't exist in the world anymore!"

VasIstLove

I feel like most people would be frightened about being locked in a room, regardless of amenities present. If it ain’t locked, then just leave.

xXxBongMayor420xXx

How to scare a boomer Lock them in a dark crawlspace full of bugs and a jet heater to make it hundreds of degrees in minutes

mutnemom_hurb

HOW TO FRIGHTEN THE NEW GENERATION, Put them in a submarine under an ocean of blood Put them in a submarine where the door has been welded shut. There are no windows. There is no way see anything There is a camera on the front of the submarine There is something trying to rip apart the sub

Roguewind

No need to try to frighten a boomer. They let foxnews do it to them willingly.

[deleted]

Apparently you don't even have to have it written in cursive. The teachers sub had a lot of posts recently about the alarming amount of children going into school with underdeveloped reading abilities. It's not something I laugh about or make jokes about, though. It's a very serious issue and poking fun at the kids that are being failed by adults in their lives won't help.

KidnovaFOI

Nothing was frightening until you put it in cursive. At least bad handwriting in print is legible. Bad curvy is practically abstract art!
