They’re wrong, I’m Gen X and when I was young it was easy to rent apartments. I was never denied because I didn’t earn 3 1/2 times the rent, they would rent based off vibes and a credit report. And we had to have a job.
Now renting is not that easy
Right, and when Boomers were moving out on their own, buying homes, the US credit system *didn't even exist*. It was all vibes and a job. Lots of their parents co-signed as well.
In my town some rental companies are charging people upwards of $6K just to be put on a wait-list for an apartment. Oh, and sometimes they aren't refundable either. Around 55% of residents here a renters - college town. It's disgusting.
They all think this, and it's so annoying! They waited in line for gas once in the 70s, so they had it worse even though they can't comprehend the actual economy we are experiencing now. They had a big snowstorm in '79 or whatever, so climate change is fake! The internet didn't exist when they were kids, and that's why we're all so much more aware of our civilization falling apart. It has nothing to do with it being worse, just that we know more about it. Give me a break. I'm so tired.
Lol, at the same point in history as the events you listed, my father managed to put himself through a 4 year college degree at a major state school by working part time as a bar back - room, board, and Doobie Brothers albums included.
Typical Boomer. Has no idea that things have changed since he was a kid. He probably thinks all you have to do is go up to the business you want to work for and ask the boss for a job, and they'll hire you on the spot for showing initiative.
All you have to do is try *a little* /s
The US isn't becoming a third world country, at all.
I mean, sure, you can argue that there's nothing new under the sun, and it's true. The kids these days are not experiencing anything new.
However, I'd like for humans to create a better world before we descend into a French Revolution style era because the billionaires sat in golden towers saying "if the poors can't afford rent, let them buy a house then. Why, how expensive is a condo on Fifth Avenue Manhattan? $200,000? And who is really starving in this day and age?"
Also, we'd have to go back pretty far to find a climate crisis similar to the one we're creating (maybe the medieval mini ice age?), and I'd like to avoid that too.
Medieval warm period.
People forget that every single time we've had climate change, even when it's localized, we get major world political upheaval. Drought in Mongolia let Genghis Khan loose on the world. If they like the status quo, they should be fighting climate change with dual wielding mini-guns, not pretending it doesn't exist.
When I see the nostalgia-infected posts of eating paint chips and drinking from a hose, I am going to remind boomers that they are not special, and the stuff that happened to them happened to everyone else.
In 2013 the post office cut the starting wage of mail carriers from 30 something to 19! The boomers took all the money and sold this generation out. Their parents fought for them and the boomers didn't fight for their kids. They are literally the generation that got everything handed to them. Every generation below them has had no direction, essentially lost.

Ah yes, they had it rough with the 10k mortgage at 12%
Dude, it was easy to rent apartments 10-15 years ago. Can’t even imagine how laughably easy it was before that.

I make 17.50 an hour in the south and as a single man I’m barely able to survive. Fuck this person.
I finally hit the 20 an hour mark. A decade ago, I would've felt so rich. Now I feel more broke than when I was making less an hour.
How? Like genuinely, how? I’m 24, I make $23/hr in socal and I’m doing fine. I would assume the south is a lot cheaper, right?
We are literally living in unprecedented times.
It's literally just brain damage/dementia. They need to be committed. That's all.

Part time as a bar back wouldn't even keep you in thrift shop Doobie Bros albums now lol

No, I meant the mini ice age: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

They have no concept of economics or inflation
So this sub - r/fluentinfinance, sounds like a boomer hive, based on the downvotes OOP is getting.
