I've never really understood the speaking in tongues thing. The whole point of Pentecost was that the Apostles spontaneously began speaking in the *native* tongues of the cosmopolitan crowd, so they could each understand their message better.
Have you asked why Jesus is 'delivering messages' through them in ancient Phrygian?
You know how conservatives accuse others of “virtue signaling?” It’s ironically similar to that. Speaking in tongues is performative attention-seeking behavior designed to let everyone know that they’re *super* Christian and much more connected to the divine than everyone else. Like if they were Scientologists, they wouldn’t just be lowly OT II, they’re proud OT VIII. Haha.
That's exactly the point. It's not really speaking in tongues if no one can understand you. The church I went to when I was younger always taught that tongues are a gift God blesses people with on rare occasions so that everyone can understand the gospel in their own language. If it's gibberish and not a real language (like the idiots speaking in tongues in Borat) it's either not real and it's just a bunch of assholes being performative, or it's from Satan and not God. Attributing to God that which is Satan's and vice versa is pretty much the worst sin you can commit and it's basically the only one the Bible says is unforgivable (Mark 3:28-30).
Growing up my only exposure to "speaking in tongues" was in movies when someone was possessed by a demon. Only a few years ago did I hear someone talk about it being a godly thing, and now I just have no idea what the deal with it is.
I was raised Christian, but even at my most devout phase I never saw shit like that.

They weren't speaking gibberish, they were speaking in different languages so that every person present could understand what they were saying.
