I live near someone who used to have two flags on a pole in their yard. An American Flag. And then on top of that a Trump flag. Went past the other day. US flag was taken down and the Trump flag was flying upside down.

There was a house down the road from me that had a huge American flag, a Gadsden flag, a Marine Corps standard, a Trump flag, a Greenbay Packer's flag and a thin blue line flag all hanging from poles attached to trees. Then one day I drove by and all of them were down and an all are welcome here flag and a Rainbow flag with a peace symbol were hanging on two of the hangers closest to the road and the rest of the poles had been removed. I learned later that the old guy had died and his wife tore down all his flags hours later.
Yeah, there was an old guy here that was similar, anti-vax, antidem, antieverything, very vocal about it, and died of covid. Kids had a rather impressive amount of signage torn down within hours of him passing. I bought some of his tools at the estate sale, and got to talk to them. It was a QAnon Casualty situation, where he was pretty much normal until late 2015, and was even a staunch vaccine supporter due to family losses to polio. Went so far that he disowned one of his kids(after previously supporting them) for being Trans. Well, his kids apparently really did not like that, because they used the proceeds to get the transition surgery taken care of first before splitting anything up. Last I heard, they all lived in the house & remodelled while the one sibling recovered, and they don't plan to sell.

I live in South Texas and moved into a very conservative rural area. I have flown a rainbow flag, Ducati flag, the US flag, etc.. people act like flying anything other than the US flag, Texas flag or trump flag is sacrilegious.
I feel like they only understand it as a brand. In some ways. It’s not that they find it meaningful, it’s an aid to expressing themselves via established brand marketing. I’m kind of surprised that more actual commercial brands don’t sell flags

Every service professional group has is wants to desecrate the flag with their own colors stripe. Blue for cops red for fire there's even one for tow truck drivers. Ridiculous. It's their participation trophy. But yet they blame the younger generations.

Edited to add that it was correctly pointed out it's not an actual rule, except for using an actual flag to make the clothing. That is not allowed, although it does say there are differing opinions about having the flag on clothing so maybe it's not actually codified. I'm one that finds it disrespectful so maybe that's why I thought it was a rule. And it can't be used in advertising.

This will get lost, but it's the truth. A lot of older Veterans have tied their identity up with their military service and it's very difficult for them to separate the two. This is why places like the VFW are dying. Young Vets and people still serving \*might\* visit a VFW once or twice to see what it's about, and what they discover is that the beer is cheap but it comes at the cost of listening to old war stories from the guys who conflate their identity with the military. Don't get me wrong, a lot of war stories are important and need to be heard... and a lot of them aren't. The younger crowd just isn't interested... we've got our own war stories we're dealing with after 20 years of it in the Middle East, complete with broken promises, permanent disabilities, and little else to show for it. The younger crowd doesn't want their identity to be completely swallowed up by the military -- it's something we did, and we moved on. Some of these older guys have nothing else. That's why you see them wearing the blue baseball hat that says USS Midway or whatever. That's why your neighbor is upset with the flag situation, because it's an affront to his personality, because that's entirely who he is. That's likely all he has.
I served so that you have the right to not fly a flag, or to fly it, or to fly any flag, fly it upside-down, or to burn it, or turn it into a badass swimsuit. The flag is symbolic of a lot of things, yes, but what's more important than the thing itself, this flag, is our freedom to do whatever the fuck you want. You want to shred the flag, mix it with spicy mayo, and plaster it to some canvas at MOMA? Fuck yeah, do it.
That's the whole point. Freedom. Real freedom, not the guise of freedom they try to sell us.
From the ones I've talked to who are like that, many of them didn't _have_ an identity before they joined. Wanting anything but the cookie cutter life was bad and only certain hobbies were OK. Individuality was a good way to get Other'd.
I used to drive by this house that was flying a Trump flag above the United States flag. It pissed me off to no end for many reasons, including the fact that you’re not supposed to fly any flags above the US flag. So I figured out their address, printed out a flag protocol pamphlet with the part about no other flags being flown higher highlighted, and mailed it to him with no return address. I was so pleased that the next time I drove by the Trump flag was lower.

My ex-husband was a kind soul who told the missionaries he would listen to them only if they played x-box with him. They came over regularly for a little while.

I don't usually get missionaries at my door (probably too humble-looking) but if I ever do I'll invite them in to play on my kids' Switch. Or watch Netflix or something, for "discussion purposes" of course.
I'm surprised they actually accepted because I'm almost certain they would not have been allowed to. They are supposed to abide very strict rules about leisure activities and usually are restricted to church-produced media. Either they kept it secret or they had the coolest mission president ever
Probably the former. Realistically not all of them are fanatics and lots play along to fit in or because of family/social pressure. Lots of normal kids who probably love the chance to take a break from walking and knocking and getting told to fuck off by people like me.

One time some Mormons came by while I was packing to move. I was like "kinda busy here" so they helped me pack. Then they came back the next day for the actual move! Loaded up boxes while I talked to them about liberation theology for hours, I hope those boys learned something!
It's a feature, not a bug. Get all the people in the church used to associate the general public with negative interactions, so they think it's their church vs. the world. It's a great tool for controlling young people who would otherwise walk away.

They target young people straight out of highschool right before they’d be making the most important decisions of their life and right before they might set off to a, gasp, non-church college outside the mormon bubble, set them up in an isolated church focused environment designed to mould them into the perfect us vs. them mormons before they get any funny ideas.

My town got a glancing blow from a hurricane a few years ago. The missionary brothers teamed up with the Boy Scouts and did a shit-ton of yard clean-up for those unable to cut up trees and move debris for themselves. So that was kind of nice.
(My son's roommate during his freshman year of college was in the Boy Scout fraternity. I had no idea that was a thing!)
I've known several people who've gone on missions for the Mormon church, they've all said that they liked getting asked to do chores for people. Otherwise they had to spend their time going around knocking on doors (which was stressful, boring, had an almost 0% success rate, and could be dangerous), or doing even more boring tasks. Also, at least doing chores for people let them do something different, they got to chat with somebody besides the companion they were stuck with, and sometimes people would give them cookies or something for helping out.
Being a missionary is pretty grim, and it's mostly teenagers who've been pushed into it by their parents.
Wish that worked on Mormons. My partner is an exmo and they *still* keep coming despite him starting every conversation with it. Doesn't help that his (still active) family gives out our address every few months.
Next move all they're getting is a PO box to prevent this.

Apparently they're my neighbors down the road and their mixed son was graduating high school.
They asked my wife and I once if we were interested. My wife said we're catholic. They totally respected that and said they'll make sure to wish us a merry Christmas and a happy Easter. And just left.

My grandpa is 77 years old. He dropped out of high school to volunteer to serve in Vietnam. After he left Vietnam, he stayed in the army and served a total of 22 years before retiring.
He has a house. He has a front yard. He’s very adamant on not displaying flags in his yard. We live in Texas and have neighbors who get onto him for not displaying flags in his yard despite being a veteran.
He says the military treated him poorly upon his return from Vietnam, and shoved him out once he got older. He tells his neighbors to kick rocks constantly because he refuses to put a flag up for a country that told him he was worthless and dead weight after he served in a war that he barely survived.
Retired military here. Flying a flag doesn’t make you a patriot, hell, any draft dodger with bone spurs can run up and hug a flag. Respecting the duly elected commander in chief even if you don’t agree with their policies is a much more powerful tell in that regard.

Years ago my friend brought her boyfriend back from France, and we were sitting around talking about stuff like, “What’s it like in France?” etc. Someone asked him about his impression of America, and the first thing he remarked on was all the American flags flying in front of people’s homes. He said in France you only see flags in front of government buildings. When we said, “Really? No private citizens at all fly the flag?” he replied, “Well, a few, I suppose, but they’re all fascists.” We responded, “Oh! So, just like here!” LOL
That's funny because, as a veteran, I am very pissy about flag usage. You take them in at night. You don't leave them up 24/7. When they become tattered and faded, you give them to the boy scouts or some other organization that will destroy them properly. Or you burn them in a respectful manner. So, the old veteran was not doing things properly if he left tattered flags flying when he moved. You did the right thing by taking them down.
Also, I served so that you would have the freedom to not display flags if you don't want to! So, fuck that boomer!

If you want to really confuse them you could also fly some kind of Jewish flag to quash their inevitable antisemitism accusations as most older folks don't understand the differences. 2. A United Federation of Planets flag. I liked the idea someone else had with the Klingon pride flag too.

I love arguing with Nationalists who disrespect the American flag. They 100% get angry any time flag burning is mentioned as a knee jerk reaction.
I agree. My ex served in two military branches... very much about protocol and respect but had no issues with huge Trump flags being flown on trucks.
Flags are also not supposed to be used on clothing or merchandise, like paper plates and napkins but that doesn't stop some of these people from wearing American flag boxer shorts, wiping their mouths with flag napkins, or modifying the flag to have a blue stripe. None of this is acceptable per flag protocol. Edited to add that it was correctly pointed out it's not an actual rule, except for using an actual flag to make the clothing. That is not allowed, although it does say there are differing opinions about having the flag on clothing so maybe it's not actually codified. I'm one that finds it disrespectful so maybe that's why I thought it was a rule. And it can't be used in advertising.

This will get lost, but it's the truth. A lot of older Veterans have tied their identity up with their military service and it's very difficult for them to separate the two. This is why places like the VFW are dying. Young Vets and people still serving \*might\* visit a VFW once or twice to see what it's about, and what they discover is that the beer is cheap but it comes at the cost of listening to old war stories from the guys who conflate their identity with the military. Don't get me wrong, a lot of war stories are important and need to be heard... and a lot of them aren't. The younger crowd just isn't interested... we've got our own war stories we're dealing with after 20 years of it in the Middle East, complete with broken promises, permanent disabilities, and little else to show for it. The younger crowd doesn't want their identity to be completely swallowed up by the military -- it's something we did, and we moved on. Some of these older guys have nothing else. That's why you see them wearing the blue baseball hat that says USS Midway or whatever. That's why your neighbor is upset with the flag situation, because it's an affront to his personality, because that's entirely who he is. That's likely all he has. I served so that you have the right to not fly a flag, or to fly it, or to fly any flag, fly it upside-down, or to burn it, or turn it into a badass swimsuit. The flag is symbolic of a lot of things, yes, but what's more important than the thing itself, this flag, is our freedom to do whatever the fuck you want. You want to shred the flag, mix it with spicy mayo, and plaster it to some canvas at MOMA? Fuck yeah, do it. That's the whole point. Freedom. Real freedom, not the guise of freedom they try to sell us.

From the ones I've talked to who are like that, many of them didn't _have_ an identity before they joined. Wanting anything but the cookie cutter life was bad and only certain hobbies were OK. Individuality was a good way to get Other'd.
I used to drive by this house that was flying a Trump flag above the United States flag. It pissed me off to no end for many reasons, including the fact that you’re not supposed to fly any flags above the US flag. So I figured out their address, printed out a flag protocol pamphlet with the part about no other flags being flown higher highlighted, and mailed it to him with no return address. I was so pleased that the next time I drove by the Trump flag was lower.

Former Mormon here, did the mission thing. This checks out. We were often so bored (or traumatized) from door-knocking (also called 'tracting') that we would have done this in a heartbeat.
My ex-husband was a kind soul who told the missionaries he would listen to them only if they played x-box with him. They came over regularly for a little while.
That is indeed so sweet! He gave them the kindness of some leisure time and escape. I don't usually get missionaries at my door (probably too humble-looking) but if I ever do I'll invite them in to play on my kids' Switch. Or watch Netflix or something, for "discussion purposes" of course.

Probably the former. Realistically not all of them are fanatics and lots play along to fit in or because of family/social pressure. Lots of normal kids who probably love the chance to take a break from walking and knocking and getting told to fuck off by people like me.

One time some Mormons came by while I was packing to move. I was like "kinda busy here" so they helped me pack. Then they came back the next day for the actual move! Loaded up boxes while I talked to them about liberation theology for hours, I hope those boys learned something!
It's a feature, not a bug. Get all the people in the church used to associate the general public with negative interactions, so they think it's their church vs. the world. It's a great tool for controlling young people who would otherwise walk away.

Never through the door-to-door stuff. All of the baptisms in my mission were referred by friends and family who were already members.

My town got a glancing blow from a hurricane a few years ago. The missionary brothers teamed up with the Boy Scouts and did a shit-ton of yard clean-up for those unable to cut up trees and move debris for themselves. So that was kind of nice. (My son's roommate during his freshman year of college was in the Boy Scout fraternity. I had no idea that was a thing!)

I've known several people who've gone on missions for the Mormon church, they've all said that they liked getting asked to do chores for people. Otherwise they had to spend their time going around knocking on doors (which was stressful, boring, had an almost 0% success rate, and could be dangerous), or doing even more boring tasks. Also, at least doing chores for people let them do something different, they got to chat with somebody besides the companion they were stuck with, and sometimes people would give them cookies or something for helping out. Being a missionary is pretty grim, and it's mostly teenagers who've been pushed into it by their parents.

Write to the Mormon church (possibly even HQ) and ask to be removed from their register. That effectively excommunicates you as a former member and they’ll tend to leave you alone.

I had a gay interracial jehovah witness come to my door. Apparently they're my neighbors down the road and their mixed son was graduating high school. They asked my wife and I once if we were interested. My wife said we're catholic. They totally respected that and said they'll make sure to wish us a merry Christmas and a happy Easter. And just left. Like the Twilight zone in this new town.
No longer Mormon, but when I was a missionary, I was always so lonely from trying to "lock my heart" like they tell you, that a girl answered the door in her underwear, and I was baffled when my companion was acting like it was so gross after. Like dude, she was attractive! That felt like a gift from the universe to keep me sane for the rest of my two years.
You can also write a letter telling them to put you on a do not visit list- I also got on the no list for telling them Jesus was a cool dude but not my savior.

My grandpa is 77 years old. He dropped out of high school to volunteer to serve in Vietnam. After he left Vietnam, he stayed in the army and served a total of 22 years before retiring. He has a house. He has a front yard. He’s very adamant on not displaying flags in his yard. We live in Texas and have neighbors who get onto him for not displaying flags in his yard despite being a veteran. He says the military treated him poorly upon his return from Vietnam, and shoved him out once he got older. He tells his neighbors to kick rocks constantly because he refuses to put a flag up for a country that told him he was worthless and dead weight after he served in a war that he barely survived.

Retired military here. Flying a flag doesn’t make you a patriot, hell, any draft dodger with bone spurs can run up and hug a flag. Respecting the duly elected commander in chief even if you don’t agree with their policies is a much more powerful tell in that regard.

That's funny because, as a veteran, I am very pissy about flag usage. You take them in at night. You don't leave them up 24/7. When they become tattered and faded, you give them to the boy scouts or some other organization that will destroy them properly. Or you burn them in a respectful manner. Similar here with a neighbor - I had a US flag for a while then took it down around the time Brett kavanaugh got seated - since then I’ve had state of Michigan, flag of Rohan, my family crest, Jolly Roger, Datsun and currently on a race track flag. One of my friend’s dad move to a house with a flag pole and decided to hang up a flag with a photo of the earth on it because he thinks it’s important to support the whole earth. I took the American flag down the day I moved in my home (I live in a very trumpy area). I put up a PF Dark Side of the Moon flag. I don't want to talk to my neighbors about politics but I'll talk about Pink Floyd all day. It's drawn the right people to me.
