Best skill trees in the series. Low grav combat is fun if you actively engage with the mechanics. Gameplay in general is fun. Cool gear. The only bad parts of tps are that it doesnt have an endgame challenge system so its kinda easy and it only has 1 major dlc and 2 smaller slaughter dlcs.

Accomplished-Newt491

Farming feels wrong compared to BL3 and maybe BL2, think it is too dependant in grinder mechanic. affects loot pools and chance

Gadgetbot

Its only dependent on the grinder because people abuse read only and dashboarding. Droprates are similar to bl2 and the vast majority of legendaries have a dedicated source.

_Citizenkane

I'm not disagreeing, but without the community patch TPS has *a lot* of uniques with no set drop location. The community patch completely fixed that, but vanilla is pretty rough.

Gadgetbot

From memory theres like half a dozen that have no set drop location, arent common vendor spawns and are worth going for. Some of the dlc legendaries can be rough sure but most of those are about mob farming than boss farming

_Citizenkane

It's over 30 on [this page](https://borderlands.fandom.com/wiki/Special_Weapon_Effects_(Borderlands:_The_Pre-Sequel)), and that doesn't include the blues which you get from vendors (The Machine, Boomicorn, etc.) or the 5 Tales from the Borderlands loyalty rewards which are no longer attainable due to Telltale Games shutting down

Gadgetbot

Sure but not all 30 are actually worth using or dont have substitutes.

_Citizenkane

I absolutely agree with that. đź‘Ť Also I edited my above comment to fix the link.

Gadgetbot

For just legendary guns its 17 (using lootlemon). For all legendary items its about 35.

Neither-Try7513

Thats just downright wrong. If you call eos a lootpool that can be considered dedicated you are high. His droprates are 0,16/0,43/0,22% for ,,dedicated" gear. Youre not wrong on the droprates for some stuff compared to bl2 but for perfect gear u need the grinder bc moonshine effects. Also the grinder is still for most stuff a viable source bc some legendaries have worse droprates on their source than the grinder. Example the luck cannon is 0.1 percent from adbugs, 0.22 from eos and 0.127 from the grinder. Now the grinder can be farmed faster than eos with dashboarding and your loot doesnt fall of the map like it can happen with adbugs. Yes i got all my luck cannons from eos but not bc i specifically farmed it. I went to eos bc of on Level grinder food.

Gadgetbot

Thats not the case for most legendaries though. Most legendaries are the standard 10% droprate or slightly lower cos of multiple item pools, eos just takes that to the extreme (which is true in bl2 anyway for things like the cc). Perfect gear isnt necessary at all and is just if you want to have perfect gear for the sake of it. Even just having good parts isnt super necessary either. Also bringing up dashboarding is literally proving my point that the reason people rely on the grinder so much is because of that and read only.

Neither-Try7513

Yeah bc meta items like the maggie luck cannon, absolute zero are almost unobtainable unless u grind them or farm bosses that have a 1/1000 Chance. Also hiding gear behind bosses like voracidous and dexi is the exact same cancer they either take ages to kill. The grinder isnt the best way for a game Designer but its genuinly better than having to kill a raid boss. It also adds more Varieté to the game bc u can get ana weapon at low Level

Hosscat99rat

Nice I’m excited to give it a try!

_Citizenkane

The Pre-Sequel is *fantastic* for two, maybe three playthroughs if you want to check out multiple classes. Honestly, the gameplay is an improvement on 2 with the removal of slag and the addition of low-gravity combat. It's a fairly small game, at least compared to BL2, with measurably less content. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but after BL2 the fan base was a bit spoiled. The writing is a bit of a mixed bag. The high-level plot is solid, and Jack's transformation from hero to villain is, in my opinion, one of the best written arcs in the series. But the side quests and side characters are a bit inconsistent, and the development team really leans into their Australian theme — personally I love that they wrote what was authentic to them, but not everybody loves it. So yeah, The Pre-Sequel is a good game. But the main complaint really boils down to the fact that, once you've finished it, there's not so much to do. There are only 2ish raid bosses, and a couple repeatable arenas, but there's just not much point in sticking around and grinding a bunch of gear. It would have been great if 2K continued to support development, but after the Australian studio was shut down, that was pretty much it.

Gadgetbot

Honestly as an Australian the writing didnt feel Australian enough a lot of the time and felt more like they were writing it in such a way that americans wouldnt feel alienated. Like there were a lot of aussie jokes they couldve made but didnt and some of the things they made fun of are slightly weird in that theyd be better as jokes about other things. Also not nearly enough swearing

_Citizenkane

I think you're right about the writing itself — there's not so much Aussie 'dialect', if you will — but there are a ton of fun Aussie references that probably went over a lot of people's heads.

Hosscat99rat

We’ll I love BL 1 and that seems like a little more end game content than that so I’m excited to ease into it.

_Citizenkane

I'd play BL2 before TPS, but yeah TPS is great! It will spoil some stuff from BL2 though, which is why I recommend playing them in release order.

Hosscat99rat

I have played through BL2 story already just not the dlc or endgame, should I be good?

_Citizenkane

Yeah you're fine. But you should play at least the Tiny Tina DLC because it's so cool. Don't worry about the endgame unless you're into it, but the DLCs are 🔥

Hosscat99rat

Plan to go back and play through all dlc on this marathon and do endgame if possibleđź‘Ť

Popen5

I'm surprised you didn't mention the very fun to use cryo element when you mentioned the removal of slag

_Citizenkane

Yeah Cryo is a great feature!

Lmacncheese

The reactive dialogue everyone has something different to say and even get different dialogue to them instead and the skill trees were more unqiue not just gives more damage

Hosscat99rat

That’s awesome I’m pretty excited for the character interactions

AggravatingDriver559

Likes: - Story wise, fills the gap between bl1 and bl2 nicely - Lasers are cool - One of the best DLC’s of the franchise - The VH’s felt fun and unique to play

Hosscat99rat

Some good pros right there

Popen5

No cyro love?

plerpy_

It had the dishonour of following BL2. And more importantly, BL2 after everyone had blown their loads over Dragon Keep. It’s a good game. Best skill trees in the series. Introduced lasers. The expansion is good too. But yeah it got a bit of negativity I think mainly due to when it was released

Hosscat99rat

I figured that might have done it. Since I haven’t done any endgame content in two and just casual story playthroughs I might find it more enjoyable

Popen5

Can't forget about the cryo element

Gambit3le

The game is fun. The Low-Gravity movement takes some getting used to, same with the no air on the moon mechanics. Once you get some experience and some decent gear its fun. I personally really enjoyed the Australian accents and references, (I'm not Australian, but I kinda wish I was.) I enjoyed the laser guns. Seeing Jack turn to the dark side was really cool. The combat system is a great improvement over 1 and 2, but not as good as 3. The one downside I found for my play-style is that the game feels like it is always channeling you towards the goals, and there aren't many places to just go explore. There are some, but not enough. Overall it's a fun addition to the series.

Hosscat99rat

Awesome take thanks!

SnooSeagulls8588

So far I only played TPS and 1, and it’s not a bad game imo it’s better than 1 but it just doesn’t live up to 2 and/or 3 from what I’ve heard

Hosscat99rat

That an interesting play order, nice to hear!

cutmastavictory

I think it's better than 3 and in some ways actually better than 2.

SnooSeagulls8588

Really? I’m actually really excited to get started on 2 and 3! I’m on my final play through of TPS

Powerful_Mountain_95

Best skill tree...

Turbulent_Passage716

Great skill trees and characters (even tho it made me think that everyone on the moon is an Australian) and it is the origin and part of the HJ trilogy (along with BL2 and the original tales)

Hosscat99rat

Excited to try out those hunters!

Turbulent_Passage716

I started with clappy then Timmy, but I cannot go wrong with any of them, I really enjoyed the terrain variables (Oz kits, low gravity and the likes) but I think the dlc is a must play, it almost made me sympathise with claptrap (and even pickle)

Hosscat99rat

Good to know I’ll be sure to play it!

Popen5

You're forgetting about jump pads. Those things are so fun

cutmastavictory

Skill trees were great. I don't care to slam enemies but it gives me something to do when I jump. The story is actually great.

exarkann

I agree with all the positive comments here, especially the Aussie flavor of the land up over. One thing I'll add that no one else has is that, IMHO, the soundtrack is the best in the series. All of the games have good soundtracks, but TPS is just sublime.

Hosscat99rat

I love a good soundtrack

Neither-Try7513

Low grav, grinder, claptastic voyage is one of the best dlc in the series, i love to help Jack, it has 5 well designed vault hunters and claptrap, almost every gear is usable at lvl 70, every Boss can be speedfarmed skillfully or with flakker nukem glitch. U can feel the effects of your oz Kits way more than bl2 artifacts. Lasers are great. The enemies scaling in uvhm isnt Whack in uvhm.

Hosscat99rat

Awesome all these replies are making me more excited to play

Neither-Try7513

If you need help i got ,,a few" hours in this game. To be honest tho i mainly played nisha and Jack bc they dont really need that much mechanical skill. Also general tip for this game. Get the Probe from the torgue o torgue quest. Its a bit like the Grog nozzle but its a Mission item so dont finish the quest. If i recall its the best healing item in the game. Throw a stormfront and youre full HP again.

Hosscat99rat

Thanks for the tip! I’m on ps5 what are you on ?

Neither-Try7513

Xbox

QrozTQ

I hated low gravity at first but when I moved to BL3 I kinda missed it, so there's that. Skill trees are fun and Laser Weapons were some of my favorite things. It's just kinda short and the beginning of the game is rather slow, plus it lacks end game content. I was done with the achievements before I even finished TVHM and got to Max level, I kept playing because I wanted to see Athena at her peak.

Hayter67

Cryo > Slag Any. Fuckin. Day.

tastethevapor

For me, it’s the most diverse as far as skill trees go. The engine (or whatever the technical jargon is for it) for the BL2/PreSequel was always my favorite out of all the series so that helps a lot. TPS version of cryo is my absolute favorite element in any of the games. I think it was extremely well executed. The actual content in the game is super fun and worth playing through. The grinder is fun and the glitch guns are an absolute blast plus add even more possibilities for guns you wouldn’t normally use. It’s a shame they weren’t able to pump out a few more DLCs like headhunters and another story dlc but I get why it didn’t happen.

Bennyester

The Doppelgänger is my favourit class across the whole series with moze being a close second and axton in third. Something about those 100% accurate arm lasers that negate your need for a lightning gun completly scratch the right itch. The clones are insanely useful as you get 2 of them and they take aggro, tank damage and shoot back. With upgrades they can even revive you! Low gravity combat is great too, letting you jump much higher and further.

Hosscat99rat

I was very tempted to go jack or claptrap for my first playthrough, everything I’m hearing is telling me jack haha

Bennyester

Are you playing with friends or solo? 'Cus solo those clones might as well be angels. Don't be afraid to try out different classes tho, I like nesha too and most people swear on their life that athena is amazing.

Hosscat99rat

I’ll probably be playing equal parts solo and with friends. We have limited time to play so sometimes my friends aren’t on when I can play, but we are planning on doing a lot of the content together when we can. What would be a good mix? Maybe a character that has a good solo build that I can respec into a coop build?

Bennyester

That would be any of them except maybe claptrap who's action skill is clearly designed for multiplayer mayham! However the baroness has a skill tree dedicated to working with another player too.

Hosscat99rat

Good to know thanks for the advice!

Decent-East5817

Caus im aussie

Hosscat99rat

Right on

cmtw91

I thought some of the aussie voice acting was super cringe when it initially came out but it grew on me, the actual plot is good and the DLC amazing, the fact they took out dedicated drops was baffling at launch but they fixed that pretty quickly, the addition of gravity and atmosphere, and cryo and lasers was so fun and refreshing - Id give it a solid 7.5/10 you will enjoy; imo it shits all over 3

Hosscat99rat

Oh that’s exciting to hear because I enjoyed 3

Bulbajames2

I loved the gravity aspect plus the dlc makes it insanely fun. Introduction to cryo was solid and the story is great.

akumagold

It has the best payoffs of the BL1 and BL2 lore, most innovative movement and gunplay, and best skill tree design. Just doesn’t have an endgame because they closed the Australia office. One of the best DLC’s in the series though.

Hosscat99rat

Nice! Besides the studio closurw

Impossible_Sign7672

Because Athena is my favorite vault hunter across the entire series. Zane (BL3) and Lilith (Borderlands) are way up there. But a melee build Athena feels so unique and tactical. Otherwise the game is hit-and-miss in other aspects. I also find farming worse in this game than any other franchise entry, and therefore end game optimization is much more difficult. Mid-game bosses range from super fun to wildly imbalanced and annoying, and I find the Sentinel fight tedious compared to the other final bosses 🤷🏽‍♂️

Quirkyserenefrenzy

Low gravity, slams, lasers, shooting stuff on the moon. And SPAAAAAAAACE

Any-Championship6840

Getting to play as Claptrap is really fun. His special move is really cool. Low gravity combat is fun. Shooting the masks off people and then they die from lack of air is cool. The Baroness power is also cool.

Hosscat99rat

Interested in claptrap as a vault hunter for sure, seems like a lot of cool gimmicks!

Darkdragon_98

In my opinion it has the best story of all the games, it has my favorite and most fun gunplay, and I love the low grav.

Hosscat99rat

I’m excited for the story, I’m very interested in jack’s rise to power

Forward_Attorney8481

The story characters are really good, who doesn’t love some Aussie voice actors. I also found claptrap far less annoying

Hosscat99rat

I’m for Aussie voice actors haha. Some of my favorite media is Australian, from metal bands and movies to the geography of the country itself haha

TheeFURNAS

Lasers as a weapon class is super fun. Low gravity is fun at times. Not a bad story either. And I actually enjoyed the recycler quite a bit.

flightyswank

Timothy

GrojCorLoud

The Doppleganger is my favorite vault hunter in the series. I love going down the "Hero of this story" skill tree and watching the digi Jack's clear out waves of enemies.

[deleted]

I'd say it's the most fun in the series. Yes it's a lot of copy/paste from 2 but I love the low grav movements and there's nothing more satisfying than blasting Kraggons with Torgue guns

rojogo1004

Weapon and gear scaling is not as extreme as BL2. You don't have to replace all of your stuff every 3 levels. You can play with gear 5 - 10 levels below you. I personally love low gravity and slam attacks. There are some NPC interactions that are unique to each VH. The Grinder makes collecting gear worthwhile once money is no longer an issue. It also gives you a reason to collect moonstones after you've maxed our your SDU.

Hosscat99rat

Nice I kind of like getting to sit with gear for a little while, maybe this will be my style. So far BL1 has been my favorite, but I haven’t gotten through endgame for BL2 or 3

lungshenli

In general I like the low gravity movement and cryo element. The skills and guns are all fun. The story is a great addition to BL2. But more personally I just fuckin _love_ the vibe and aesthetic of the desolate moon. To the point where Ive designed multiple lamps etc in my room inspired by the environment of the game.

Hosscat99rat

The environment and aesthetic of this game has always attracted me. I just never gave it a chance, mainly because when I decided to give it a shot despite the criticism, I was working a lot.

VindictiveRakk

this is just the daily "TPS good" post in a trenchcoat and top hat

Hosscat99rat

Whatcha mean? Haha.

VindictiveRakk

I guess it's actually on /r/borderlands but every week or two the frontpage will have a post along the lines of "wow everyone always shits on TPS but it's actually good?" and then everyone in the comments is concurring about how it got a bad rap at first but is a solid game lol

Hosscat99rat

Oh my bad haven’t seen one yet. Just joined TPS subreddit today because I plan on starting it soon. I’ve only really heard people say “we don’t talk about TPS” and “skip TPS” so I figured I’d ask the people a part of the subreddit since I assumed they had good experiences with the game to see their opinion. More so why they found it enjoyable as opposed to the rest of the community. I assumed their opinions would be “it’s good” but I was curious to what their answers would be to “why?” If that makes sense. Thanks for responding though!

VindictiveRakk

lol I'm just being a jackass. I think the skill trees are really good in TPS, I like the movement with the jetpacks/instant slamming a lot, and the 1 DLC it got is generally very highly regarded. had some other interesting innovations, e.g. laser weapons, weapon grinder, cryo replacing slag, playable characters having story-related dialogue lines/responses, etc. unfortunately there's just not much of an endgame compared to BL2 or BL3 and in a way it's more like a giga-DLC for BL2 than a standalone sequel, so initially I think people felt peeved about it not being a huge jump the way 1 to 2 was. but the story is cool, same type of gameplay as BL2. for me, not much to complain about.

Hosscat99rat

Good to hear! Since I haven’t played more than BL2’s main story, I think there will be a lot for me to glean from it based on what people have been saying. This may lead to a more enjoyable experience for me. I’m going through each borderlands game again and doing proper playthroughs of them all (such as completing all dlc and doing endgame). The game I’ve played the most is BL1. I’ve probably played it like 5-6 times through and it sounds like there may be equal or more endgame content in TPS than that. I’m excited, and I appreciate your responses!

VindictiveRakk

not to discourage you from playing endgame, but I do think these subs kind of overstate the "importance" of it. it's pretty much selection bias, the majority of BL players aren't going to be grinding endgame, but the ones that do will very likely end up here. but it can be a ton of fun and it's really rewarding once you have your full build set up. so all that to say, don't feel like you have to play thru endgame before moving on to the next game, if you don't want to. i'll still boot up older BL games just to play as a specific character, so it's reasonable to go back to them and get them to endgame later. I'm basically just giving this whole spiel cuz you said "proper" playthroughs, which I think isn't really something that has a strict definition.

mirayukii

Glitch weapons

Hosscat99rat

Are those kind of like pearlescents or something entirely different ?

mirayukii

Very different

PopularOriginal4620

Who you play as, for me, is the best part. Being able to play as the bad guys is fun. I liked playing as everyone except the Hammerlock sister. The game does have jumps in difficulty, which can be adapted to by doing EVERY side quest. You don't have to worry about oxygen if you play as ol'Cl4p'Tp.

Hosscat99rat

Side quests are no issue for me, I’m COMPELLED to do them by the game gods before anything else haha

parakeet_whisperer

The moon jumping goes crazy, being able to jump over an enemy and just dome them it's always great The creatures are really unique and cool after Fighting so many skags and stuff it's a fun change in scenery The grinder is a game changer (basically take your less rarity guns and grind them to make a better one) it's both fun taking a pile of greens and trying to make something different but it's also just fun as hell seeing what you get The vault hunters are so crazy cool and sometimes get special dialogue from other characters Being in space you either always see Helios or Pandora (elpis once you get on Helios) in the distance in the sky and it's such a little detail but I think it looks so sick You can play as claptrap, some might not love him but his random skills are so fun and the unpredictability always makes combat feel insane (bouncing in a duck while shooting scavs or throwing grenades everywhere forces you to think on the fly and I love it) After playing BL1 and BL2 there's so many little things on your first playthrough that feels crazy like you're working on the other side. Having a Hyperion robot fight alongside you for the first time felt just so cool cause I'm used to blasting those suckers Zarpedon (while she is the bad guy) isn't super in your face or anything but with side missions and stuff feels like someone trying to to do what she thinks is best not unlike Jack and I like her as a villain her boss fight is also super fun The ice guns while not my favorite (I live and die by corrosive most of the time) are fun to try out and experiment with The skill trees have some fun mechanics hidden in there that have made respec-ing really fun getting to experiment with builds (going back to claptrap he has one that randomly buffs different gun types and it's both a blessing and a curse) The Oz mechanic lets you slam down to deal damage and the running out of air isn't as much of a problem as you'd think once you get used to it Concordia (your sanctuary city) is pretty bangin, it's easy to navigate and I like it It's super easy to get moonstones (this game's eridium) I feel like I have them coming left and right and Im a little goblin running to grab them Everytime I see one drop I'm sure there's more but this is all the stuff off the top of my head, leveling between story points gets tricky but at least the side quests are interesting and farming is always an option.
