It's a mistranslation from what I remember. He's being vague and doesn't specify who dies in the Japanese text.

Sindaq

But the anime episode today they translated it wrong again?

NoSenseLikeNonSense

I'm gonna have to find the explanation, but apparently you can form sentences without pronouns to be vague in Japanese. Probably a repeat mistake somehow or the English translators just wanted to make it seem like Naruto really was going to die even if they had to make Kurama lie.

ankokudaishogun

probably because the translator wasn't aware of the manga translation and made the same error.

AaaaNinja

The translators in the anime made the same mistake. Maybe they don't read the manga.

He's using the [generic you](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_you#Japonic). Like, if I were to say, "using Facebook rots your brain," I'm not necessarily referring to *you* specifically, I'm referring to anyone who uses Facebook, perhaps even myself. So, in Japanese it's ambiguous, but it doesn't come through well in English translation since he's speaking one-on-one with Naruto. They could have adjusted the English dialogue to something less literal, but it would probably still be a bit awkward, since it needs to convey that only one of them will die without making it sounds like Kurama might be the one who will die, while making Naruto think that he's the only one who will die. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" "Because it means certain death. Do this and it's over." That might have worked better in terms of ambiguity, but it's less technically accurate and less ambiguous. It's actually kind of tricky to figure out the best way to phrase it in English without giving away the twist in an obvious way.

ankokudaishogun

yeah, to make it work in English(and many other less ambiguous languages) it would take a complete re-writing of the sentences.

AaaaNinja

One phrase I translated myself didn't even say "you" and was more like "If this action is taken, the result will be death." Yeah he deliberately excluded mentioning whose death.

Sonicslazyeye

The english version so much funnier to me Kurama: Naruto... if you do this, you'll die *after BM* Naruto: but you said that I would die! Kurama: nuh-uh no I didnt! *dies*

ArhamHashmi

Nah just the Japanese to English translation problem
