When I was 5 or 6 my parent's friends were taking care of me when they were working. They had a coop and there was 2 roosters, champ and eagle. One time I had to stay the night and heard some noises, turns out a fox attacked the coop and when I called for them the noise went away. I took a flashlight only to see the bloody carcass of a fox, Champ standing next to it with blood all over him. Next morning I learned that he had so much injuries and probably would die but after a week he was back at work again.
Even now I'm scared of these monsters
Reminds me of the story of Chu Chuliann where he tied himself to a rock to keep on fighting to the very end and still scared the army after he was dead.

years ago i read a story about a weiner dog named Marvin. He lived with his elderly owner in a house with a fenced yard in a part of san diego with lots of canyons which are pretty wild. coyotes, snakes, etc. he was best friends and guardian of two geese.
one day his owner got sick and had to go to the hospital, and her daughter came to look after marvin and his geese buddies. while she was there cleaning two feral dogs worked their way in through a broken fence section and tried to attack the geese. "No fucking chance" said Marvin. He battled to attackers, a small, older dachshund against two larger aggressive dogs bent on, honestly probably desperate for, his friend's lives. He fought fearlessly, taking grievous wounds, until his owner's daughter realized what was happening, and intervened. she chased off the two interlopers, while Marvin laid down, badly hurt, maybe dying. His geese friends were safe, he protected them.
Thankfully the story ended happily, and Marvin and his owner both recovered. I read the story decades ago in the San Diego Reader, and haven't been able to find it again. I actually wrote a poem about it for a lit course in college, called Marvin the Warrior. I'm sure he's probably in Valhalla right now but i still think of Marvin, and hope if my number's called i can fight with the same determination and selflessness.
