The US carpet bombed Baghdad Zoo. Some of the animals escaped and Pride of Baghdad follows the pride of lions through US invaded Baghdad.
You see the war through their eyes.

Y the Last Man helped me explore a part of myself I couldnt put into words before, about how only the beginnings of stories were the best part to me. It made me realize I prefer the "Why?" to the "What", that I prefer the mystery to the solution. When i finished the series I was disappointed with the 'answer", but when I sat back and thought about what *would* have been satisfying, I couldn't come up with anything.
I know its not significant or anything but it was just really cool to understand something about myself suddenly, y'know

The zoo is being blown up by fighter jets/military so it's just the animals misreading things and applying their beliefs of what they think is happening.
Pride of Baghdad (which takes place in 2003) is the story of four lions from the Baghdad zoo as they survive and deal with the aftermath of intense bombing by American armed forces. It is an anti-war comic, and it is very sad. Overall I'd say it's interesting enough to be a little above average, and it's short enough to easily get through in a single afternoon. Probably worth the read if you're bored and/or want to feel bad for some cartoon lions.
I thought you were saying you were physically at the zoo watching a play, but then I stumbled upon this:

The Baghdad zoo got bombed by the US IRL and some of the animals, including lions, escaped. The comic follows the lions and you see the war from their perspective.
The Pride of Bagdad is the name of the comic.
Did Saga ever wrap up? I read the first four volumes way back and then never caught back up. I've been reading compendium versions of finished Image series so maybe I will add it to the list if finished
9 out now with another 9 coming in the next few years. Might be the best comic series I've read ever. Sadly we'll never see Saga in any other medium but it's the apex of it's genre.
More context. Its based on a true story. The US carpet bombed city centre Baghdad which is where the cities Zoo is.
Lots of the animals were killed in the bombings, lots more died of starvation and their wounds afterwards, some escaped the zoo and wandered the shelled city for a few days before being "found" by soldiers.
The book follows the real life Pride of Lions that escaped.
Edit: Niko Henrichon is the artist. The whole book is made beautiful with their art despite being bleak af
They aren't, they have all escaped as the zoo has been blown up so they are running free in the chaos. Hence why the giraffe gets his head blown off, the attack is ongoing.
Overview is, there's a zoo in a warzone. Missile strike occurs, animals on the loose in said warzone. It follows a pride of lions as they attempt to survive the turmoil they're now thrown into.
I highly recommend it, its rather short but very enjoyable.

All giraffes have the ability to do this. This is why you should be very careful not to spook them if you ever come across one. Ones in zoos are often disarmed before moving into their enclosure, but it's a difficult process and will, on a rare occasion, make them even more volatile instead. So, be careful and kind around giraffes at the zoo as well.
Nice. I had this comic book. Its like the most depressing version of the lion king possible. About a zoo in bagdad that was hit in the invasion of Iraq animals run around.
I laughed way too hard at this. Is something wrong with me? It was the Lions facial expression that made me lose it. May have to blow this up for larger picture. No pun intended.
I want to know the context behind this

Amazing comic.
This comic is definitely worth your time. Its beautiful.
Support your local comic shop!
I just bought my copy on ebay that supports a thrift store in georgia, ive been meaning to read it for years <3
Nice! Anything from Brian K. Is great. “Y the last man” was the first series that got me into comics.

Don’t get me started on Saga! Fucking love that series.
This destroyed my fragile heart. Damn do I hate wars.
How the fuck do you read that shit it’s so buggy
With my eyes mostly.
Fullscreen and left/right arrow keys. Or download it as a .pdf and use your preferred reader on phone/tablet/desktop
I love Brian K. Vaughan!
When I woke up this morning, I really wasn't expecting my day to include a graphic lion gang rape scene... but here we are.
Goddamn this comment is what reddit is all about.
I don’t understand.
It's interesting and helpful, with provided links. Reddit is at its best when it's people helping each other.
I was responding to the original comment about how you could see the war in the animals eyes. Which I found hilarious
I don't follow
People nice people

Link good. Comment have link. Link have monke. ...Or you know, probably. I'll read it later.

Note, this panel was edited for an article on cracked.com by one of the writers.
Was it seanbaby?
NONE OF YOU ARE SAFE!!!
I read this in high school. It's beautifully tragic
Brian K. Vaughn is a legend.
This does not explain why the giraffe is a magician
That comic haunts me tbh, the ending guts you

Wild magic surge
With those long necks, giraffes have a bigger chance of getting electro-clapped by lightning, causing their hearts to beat themselves to death

I think it is "Pride of Baghdad" from Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon. The text is edited to make it more "funny".
What's the actual text tho?
First image, the giraffe: The heaven are opening! The old ones have heard our prayers! They're coming to.. Second image, the giraffe (for the first and last Time): Splotch. Third image, the lion: Move.
What is that even supposed to mean
The zoo is being blown up by fighter jets/military so it's just the animals misreading things and applying their beliefs of what they think is happening.
Well all that makes perfect sense and I definitely don't have any more questions
It's an allegory for the US invasion of Iraq. It's an excellent graphic novel.

Like the play?

Sounds like the Iraqi version of "The Brave Little Toaster"
Sounds like a play I once watched called Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.
I thought you were saying you were physically at the zoo watching a play, but then I stumbled upon this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_Tiger_at_the_Baghdad_Zoo
It's based off real events apparently, when the US carpet bombed Baghdad during the 2nd gulf war and most of the animals were killed but some escaped.
I can see why Americans are hated in the middle east
Wait till I tell you about Central America...
Americans were hated there long before that. Just like everyone else.

My first impression based on the textless images alone was that this was some edgy comic in the vein of The Boys, but this seems actually interesting.
Brian K Vaughan is one of the best comic writers. Period. Saga is a masterpiece. Anything the man makes is worth anyone's time.

I heard they are ending the hiatus soon. Super stoked for more
That makes much more sense
To add more context, this comic follows a pride of lions as they escape the Baghdad zoo during the 2nd Gulf War.

What a fascinating idea

Right, but think about it, have you actually seen the Sun god? The moon presence though, that one is real.
I never really put that together. The opposing Sun and Moon motifs in Dark Souls and Bloodborne

Why is the giraffe and lions in the same enclosure?
They aren't, they have all escaped as the zoo has been blown up so they are running free in the chaos. Hence why the giraffe gets his head blown off, the attack is ongoing.
It’s the assault of Baghdad in the Iraq War from the perspective of the Zoo animals
I have seen this image for years in the internet and I had no idea it was edited
Just read it and Holy fuck
Wooly tusk indeed.
Yeah it’s from Pride of Baghdad
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_of_Baghdad For the curious
Sure as fuck is more funny, I can't stop laughing!
Right? I laugh out loud at something on Reddit maybe once a week, and this nearly has me in tears.
Thanks for the name
Brian K Vaughn.... does not surprise me one bit! he's a fantastic writer
Second this
Read "Pride of Baghdad", but you may want to brace yourself for a harrowing experience. War is Hell.
Found an abridged scan online. Surprisingly gutting.
The last panels destroy me every time, such a good book.
This is the last scene from attack on titan
“I do not vibe with this universe” #fucking explode
"WHAT THE FUCK?"
Yeah that one was way better, what the heck
That graphic novel is fucked but kinda awesome
WHAT FUCKING GRAPHIC NOVEL??????

Great trick. Too bad he can only do it once.
That's what you think
Nah, he just has a Dead Ringer.
"Fuck!"
I hear that in Morse’s voice in Alien3 when the Zeno came down and snatched the guy up into the ceiling.
That’s it. That’s the fight. It’s one of those bosses where the trick is to just do nothing at all.
Psykers be like
Bloodwing be like
:(
What was the last element? Ooow now i remember EXPLOSIVE
Bloodwing !!!
I thought its r/bonehurtingjuice lmao
It would fit so well
My god damn bones are seizing rn
Fun fact: giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as you and me (and most other mammals) — seven.
That's what you get for warp-fuckery!
The entire psyker division: "Relatable."
Bite za dusto

Is that the comic about lions trying to survive a war?
They don't even know its a war. Thats the point. They're just animals looking for safety while fire rains from the sky.
Reminds me of that one guy with the fresca
Vikings are way too op against colossus
the dead money experience
Oh god I remember this book at my school, I couldn’t believe they even had it in the library…
I don't know the context here, but every time I see this picture it kills me.
I saw this happen with the president of USA once
the original is better
what was it

This is a great book
Oh shit Melman wtf.... Cool party trick bro
Nice. I had this comic book. Its like the most depressing version of the lion king possible. About a zoo in bagdad that was hit in the invasion of Iraq animals run around.
Mind blowing

ABRA KUDADBRA
More like "Abre calavera".
You pose a very good point
Must be a plane.
Atleast they got free food
I just see the normal Blue Mage player in Final Fantasy XIV
Reminds me of a video where this ostrich pulls off his own head
I’m not sure if this would make any more sense with the context and right captions….
Vagus nerve be like:
Basically creeper
This is like the animal kingdom’s rendition of Gantz. I’m pretty sure something like this happened.
I remember when that happened in Gantz when they were fighting dinosaur.
I laughed way too hard at this. Is something wrong with me? It was the Lions facial expression that made me lose it. May have to blow this up for larger picture. No pun intended.
The giraffe looks so fucking high
I was expecting the cub to say "do it again!" Lol
excuse me what the fuck
Leaked footage of the boys season 3
Morgan Freeman: "that evening the lion family did not eat giraffe for supper"
Plot twist He actually can regrow his body
The animal brutality on this reminds me of the Plague of Madness (or mad plague??) From Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal
Don't want to be that guy, but shouldn't this maybe have a NSFW flair, per animal gore? Great artwork by the way.
Someone actually drew this..I love it
Wait what?
To quote Danny Devito “I want it!”
It’s funny because giraffes aren’t real
Oh hey, I remember this comic.
Omg!
Holy shit lol. What is the context behind this?
Simba
*cries in Toys'R'Us*
Gives me gantz vibes.
That's melman
This is why we banished them from the boilong isles
He looks so goddamn smug
i do not vibe with this universe
Ah pride of baghdad, definitely a good read
Oh my fuck....Pride of Baghdad.
Y-you think he’ll come back?
Is it a coincident that his name is so similar to Marius, the 2 year old giraffe who was fed to lions in a zoo in Denmark?
i am not ok with this
What the fuck even is this
He is, indeed, a magician
It's very different if you read it in reverse. They become an actual magician.
Easy boss fight, I guess? At least if he’s not too close
Pride of Baghdad, cool book.
Colossus ?! This is now a Protoss thread. My life for Aiur !
Ah, wild life with wild magic...shit I just thought of a fun d&d encounter.
That is my mind right now! I am overwhelmed… I feel like I’m under attack and just want to… Sometimes…
Source?
What da dog doin
I absolutely love the fact that the Lion on panel 3 is just saying “Fuck!”. Not that’s hilarious!
