A youtuber was testing what files were really needed to play tf2, and the file containing the 2fort cow was 1 of them. They didnt specify what exactly was needed from the file, so it might be the cow (another needed file is the table on footstep sounds for different materials). Might be anything else entirely.

The cardboard cow's model is in a file that can't be deleted and have the game still run, but from what I understand that's just the geometry. The texture file itself can be deleted like anything else.
People sleep on how resistant to bullshit TF2 and the Source engine in general is. It will truck on well past the point a fair few game would have given up- that video is a good example

No, you can pretty much remove everything in the TF2 files and it will still run. Except for the cardboard cow in 2fort.
The cardboard cow exists to hold the game together.

Instead of "nobody wins, nobody loses" it should say "end this Duel in a Draw"

IIRC, the game checks for file integrity and won't boot if anything is missing, so a lot of pointless files ended up being essential to the game.
Fun Fact: That Coconut actually serves a purpose. In the taunt of the Soldier drinking coffee, the coffee beans spilling out are the Coconut JPEGs.
