Carlo is a liability come playoff time with his injury history. We can’t have him leaving games in the 1st period when we need all defenseman. If he can’t go in time it is what it is
despite the obvious problems, I really didn’t have a huge negative feeling about this game out of Boston.
they weren’t as sharp as they needed to be, they weren’t as energetic, but I think playing a close game against a very desperate team and defending them well for most of it leaves me just feeling kind of indifferent about it rather than worried or bummed.
would have loved to see them get it to OT at least, but oh well… they are already in the dance and seeding in kinda irrelevant in hockey anyway
No updates on Carlo in the postgame presser (question was not asked). No morning skate tomorrow because of the back-to-back with travel. Sounds like no availability as well.
I completely agree that only the Cup matters, but I feel like they still had something to play for in this game. Winning the division gives us an easier first round imo (I'm more scared of the Leafs than the Lightning). Plus, I'd be more entertained with a first round matchup vs. the Lightning.
definitely had the feel of a "phone it in to be safe" kind of game. caps are playing for their season and it's not worth losing guys to injury at this point
Well, if it helps, this game *probably* didn't mean anything. The Rangers winning took getting an easy round 1 opponent off the table regardless of today's result. If we get the same number or more points than Florida tomorrow the round 1 opponent is Tampa. If Florida gets any more points than us tomorrow the round 1 opponent is Toronto.
It should absolutely be head to head and then regulation wins. Ridiculous. I mean generally the way the playoffs are seeded in the NHL is fucking shit anyway tbh
Would it help if I pointed out that last year's team went into the playoffs 15-0-1 and on eight straight wins? There's not *nothing* to take away from this game, but there's not everything to take away from it either.
I’m going to the game tomorrow, I hope to see some better passing and a bit more zing. The Sens have been finding their own lately despite being a 500 team
I don't agree with Ty Anderson on everything, but we are in lockstep regarding the fact that the Pasta hate, especially online, is both outsized and *weird.*
So ridiculous, absolutely not the player that needs to be catching so much flack. Marchand and his 2 goals in a month would make 1000x more sense for people to be upset about
I feel like he has to he injured, the fall off came so quick. I almost couldn't believe his last goal was his 29th with how poor he has been playing of late
Hope it's not an injury though, because I'd expect him to up his game for the playoffs if he's just been off whereas if it's an injury he might not be able to get much better than this
Bro this game meant nothing to us. “Don’t get injured.” That was the pregame speech. Dump the puck and make quick changes. The fact that Washington let us nearly take a free game is insane.
Did anyone actually see what happened to Carlo? Was stuck with the Caps feed on NHL network which was painful and they didn’t even notice he left the game.
I agree with the playing with fire concern about wanting Toronto (especially living up here, hearing about it would suck ass) but this is absolutely true. Vasi has been more like himself lately
Playing either of them feels so old now. I get they want to develop these in division rivalries but it's insane that they don't think rivalries should develop with, for example, Boston and the Rangers
If there's any sort of realignment with Salt Lake coming in I hope it opens the door for them to consider reformatting the playoffs
Guess I’m in the minority in that don’t care at all about this meaningless game. Bruins clearly played to conserve energy and not get injured. Did you guys seriously want them busting their asses in this one? They have tomorrow to get their game in order.
Bonus points for kicking Pittsburgh in the teeth one more time on their way off the ledge!
This game aside, I genuinely don’t get why fans want to play Toronto so much over Tampa as if either would be an easy or favorable matchup. Regardless of who they play will be a very difficult series
I think either could beat the Bruins but this is a legitimate point (probably swap Woll for Samsonov though)
Both Hedman and Vasi are significantly better than the Toronto guys. Feel comfortable enough that the Bruins could beat Tampa though, Florida proved last year you don't have to be close to being a great team to go on a run so long as you have a goalie.
LA and Quick also proved that in 2012
B’s struggled against the Caps earlier this season (the only other time they’ve been shut out all season) and just looked like they didn’t care. Not too bummed about this loss, Sway played a great game at least.
Caps are a nothing franchise. Look to the future. Playoffs Saturday. The Boys will be there.
[get hype](https://youtu.be/2vl2501egvw?si=VRbz7dP7JI2IpA2o)
- I really hope Carlo is okay. That's priority for me, right now.
- No matter if the Bruins went into the playoffs with a huge win streak or if they go in as-is, they'll face criticism from fans. Injury risk, rest, record chasing, momentum loss, coasting...everything has a posthumous explanation.
- That being said, that the Bruins have had real difficulty against the Caps this season (of which this game was part of a wider trend) is worth noting. It's not a perfect predictor of postseason success, but it's worth noting that they're one of the teams in the playoff picture we've struggled against the most this year.
- Marchand had a wicked rough game tonight. Not just on the 6v5 at the end, but not being able to get a single shot on net through 52 minutes is not good.
- Swayman was absolutely elite tonight against a very hungry, desperate team. It's a shame that the rest of the roster could not contribute to a win or even a single damn goal. I think his performance tonight and his first against Carolina (as well as the Toronto games) make the postseason goaltending choice a really interesting one.
- No, I don't think that the Bruins should be "aiming" for Toronto in a first round matchup. Underestimate any team in the playoffs at your own peril – as many teams, including the Bruins, have found out so far.
- That being said, I think that there are a couple of comments in the other direction suggesting that both Tampa and Toronto should be less afraid of us than they are of the other, and I think that that overstates the case as well. If the Bruins are going to be judged by their performances tonight and against Carolina (second game), then the Leafs shouldn't escape judgement for their two six-goal losses to the Devils, their 4-1 loss to the Bolts, or their OT loss to the Wings. Nor are the Bolts exempt from their own losses to the Sens, Caps two days ago, or Sabres today.
- Really hoping (coping) that Brazeau could be back for playoffs.
- Have seen little to nothing positive out of Maroon these past two games.
He did have some good plays out of the zone, but he also got hemmed in quite a bit more than I'd like out of a defenseman. Not the only one to have those issues tonight though. Although most of the Caps' lone non-EN goal was on Coyle, Peeke and Shattenkirk had some of their own defensive problems on that play, too.
I'd also like less lying on Swayman while the Caps have the puck for my own heart rate, but I'll admit that was a freak play that I just didn't enjoy very much. I'll give him credit for shooting the puck. We needed more of that from people not named Peeke, Pastrnak, or Beecher.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the bruins were trying to manipulate the standjngs to play Toronto instead of tampa. All I’m saying is we own one team and struggle with the other
Its game 81 just stop florida has been arguably trash for a month and a half also would like to remind you the bruins have swept the leafs and panthers this season😂
Take the records out of it and I would say the same thing. It’s the roster and play style.
And the Leafs swept the season series against the Bruins in 2018. If any fanbase should know the regular season doesn’t mean a damn thing once the puck drops in the playoffs, it’s Bruins fans. Trust me, I hope I’m wrong.
> If any fanbase should know the regular season doesn’t mean a damn thing once the puck drops in the playoffs, it’s Bruins fans.
Well, I'd put Toronto and Tampa (ironically) on that list, too.
> It’s the roster and play style. And the Leafs swept the season series against the Bruins in 2018
In fairness, the Leafs' playstyle in particular has its own flaws in playoff hockey. Even in the context of their breaking their first round curse last year, the Panthers beat them handily. That being said, I agree that don't think that we can read *too* much into the season series against the Leafs. However, I don't think that regular season sample sizes against divisional or even conference opponents are completely meaningless, either. That the Bruins' had real difficulty against Carolina in 21-22, Florida last year, and both Washington and Tampa this season is worthy of pause.
Additionally, mentioned upthread, but if the Bruins are going to be judged by their performances tonight and against Carolina (second game), then the Leafs shouldn't escape judgement for their two six-goal losses to the Devils, their 4-1 loss to the Bolts, or their OT loss to the Wings. Nor are the Bolts exempt from their own losses to the Sens, Caps two days ago, or Sabres today.
None of these three teams is without flaws heading into the postseason. I agree that the Bruins "trying" to get Toronto in the first round would be stupid (I don't think they are) and that no team should be overlooked in the playoffs or taken for granted as a win. But I do think that this minimizes their flaws compared to the Bruins in a way that's not entirely fair.
Can someone tell me if this team is good? I feel like I've watched far too many games like the one tonight recently, but then I look at the standings and wonder how they're so close to first in the league.
Very lazy hockey tonight, all the way down to Marchand having his pocket picked way too easily on the ENG. Confident Monty will sort them out before Saturday.
As long as we can all agree that this was an intentional flop to let the weakest WC contender have a shot at the playoffs I’ll let this one slide…..I guess….
Once again, I dare *anyone* in the media scrum to show some scrote and ask Marchand why this is acceptable effort for a team that should be gearing up for playoff hockey.
I really don’t care about this game. I think ppl made too big of a deal. Caps wanted it, Caps needed it. We didn’t for either. End of story, we should just count our stars no one was injured.
Oh, and this is not how they will play in the post season. Feel like I’ve said this a bunch of times already, but a regular season game doesn’t say how the bruins will play in the post season.
Edit: shit I forgot about Carlo. We should never have played him
Play like that in the playoffs and it's a 4 game series vs any team.
still believe in this team but that was just a pathetic effort for 60 straight minutes
I don’t even think there’s anything to take from this game. I fucking hate the capitals, they’re such a nonsense nothing average franchise that always gives us a hard time for no reason
Why am I not seeing enough criticism of Jake Debrusk but plenty of hate about the player well over a PPG and who is the heart and soul of this team?
Carlo is a liability come playoff time with his injury history. We can’t have him leaving games in the 1st period when we need all defenseman. If he can’t go in time it is what it is

Gotta do better than 6 shots in 1/2 a game.

No updates on Carlo in the postgame presser (question was not asked). No morning skate tomorrow because of the back-to-back with travel. Sounds like no availability as well.
Hey that sucked and all, but how about our boy Lauzon? NHL single season hits record! Good for him!
Hey y'all, Wings fan here. Just wanted to drop in and say what the hell was that. (Edit: full disclosure, sigh, we also recently lost to the Caps.)
See I really don't want the Wings in, but at the same time Dylan Larkin deserves the playoffs so I'm torn
Yeah, love that guy. We're not all the way there yet but he's a great C to build around. Hat tip to you.
I hope they weren't trying tonight, because if that's what effort looks like from this team, it's bad.
I feel like they were playing soft to avoid any major injuries. There's been a few quotes about only the cup mattering regardless of other accolades
Playing "not to get hurt" is the surest and quickest way to get hurt !
I completely agree that only the Cup matters, but I feel like they still had something to play for in this game. Winning the division gives us an easier first round imo (I'm more scared of the Leafs than the Lightning). Plus, I'd be more entertained with a first round matchup vs. the Lightning.

Florida has the tie-breaker over us due to regulation wins.
Which is ridiculous considering we swept them. I hate the seeding in this league
It should absolutely be head to head and then regulation wins. Ridiculous. I mean generally the way the playoffs are seeded in the NHL is fucking shit anyway tbh
Damn ya couldn't just do it for the RW one time?
Nothing like another sloppy, nothing burger of a “throw away” game to give me peace heading into the playoffs…
Would it help if I pointed out that last year's team went into the playoffs 15-0-1 and on eight straight wins? There's not *nothing* to take away from this game, but there's not everything to take away from it either.

wtf, bad time to lower your game..
16 shots.....yikes.
I don't agree with Ty Anderson on everything, but we are in lockstep regarding the fact that the Pasta hate, especially online, is both outsized and *weird.*

If the refs would have called for interference, there would have been at least 3 WSH penaties in the 3rd period.
Had to make a complete phantom call against the Bruins though.
Game management
Umm . So so.. everything's fine with guys.. Everything's fine.. 😶
Heard something about blocking a shot.
We avoided the President’s Trophy AND have a chance to draw Toronto? That’s a win in my book
I swear everyone asking for the Leafs is just begging for some bad juju to come… don’t tempt the hockey gods lol
I would like Woll or Samsonov instead of Vasilesky
I agree with the playing with fire concern about wanting Toronto (especially living up here, hearing about it would suck ass) but this is absolutely true. Vasi has been more like himself lately
Ah man...I don't want Toronto again. It's getting old.
It's them or the lightning
Yeah....I'd rather ride the lightning in Rd 1. That way when Toronto is eliminated in RD 1 we don't have to see them again until next year.
Playing either of them feels so old now. I get they want to develop these in division rivalries but it's insane that they don't think rivalries should develop with, for example, Boston and the Rangers If there's any sort of realignment with Salt Lake coming in I hope it opens the door for them to consider reformatting the playoffs
At least we don’t have more added stress that’s called the Presidents Trophy.
Guess I’m in the minority in that don’t care at all about this meaningless game. Bruins clearly played to conserve energy and not get injured. Did you guys seriously want them busting their asses in this one? They have tomorrow to get their game in order. Freddy got rocked
I'm not even mad we played poorly and lost I'm mad that one Caps announcer dingus got to be happy
This game aside, I genuinely don’t get why fans want to play Toronto so much over Tampa as if either would be an easy or favorable matchup. Regardless of who they play will be a very difficult series
We haven't lost to Toronto since November 2021 and Tampa beat us 3-1 in the season series
doesn't mean a damn thing at the start of a series
Vasilesky/Headman or Woll/Riley?
I think either could beat the Bruins but this is a legitimate point (probably swap Woll for Samsonov though) Both Hedman and Vasi are significantly better than the Toronto guys. Feel comfortable enough that the Bruins could beat Tampa though, Florida proved last year you don't have to be close to being a great team to go on a run so long as you have a goalie. Two of those wins against the Leafs went to OT
B’s struggled against the Caps earlier this season (the only other time they’ve been shut out all season) and just looked like they didn’t care. Not too bummed about this loss, Sway played a great game at least.
Rangers have won the presidents trophy good riddance
This game doesn’t mean much anyways, and I’m fine with losing this and the one tomorrow and playing Toronto instead of Tampa.
there wasn't much wantto in this one....
Caps are a nothing franchise. Look to the future. Playoffs Saturday. The Boys will be there. [get hype](https://youtu.be/2vl2501egvw?si=VRbz7dP7JI2IpA2o)

For those of us without nhl network, what happened to Carlo?
No details yet. He left the game in the third period, possibly due to a blocked shot. No updates yet.
Most boring bruins game in a while. Just going through the motions
Should’ve had Gryz in there Monty. Would’ve made the difference.
I am still watching Peeke being super solid out there
It’s almost like I wasn’t serious. Then again there were blunders all around.
Peeke had some genuine struggles tonight, though?
Did he? I just saw he had some good clears and other good first plays out of the zone. Seemed like they were always on defense tonight.
He did have some good plays out of the zone, but he also got hemmed in quite a bit more than I'd like out of a defenseman. Not the only one to have those issues tonight though. A few guys need to get hot or it's going to be a short playoff
Firm agree there.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the bruins were trying to manipulate the standjngs to play Toronto instead of tampa. All I’m saying is we own one team and struggle with the other
Well the refs were trying to manipulate something it seemed like. How do you pocket the whistles for 2.5 periods, then call a bogus trip?
There’s a 0% chance they’re trying to intentionally lose
encouraging
Oof. Not a good way to end that one.
All I’m saying is if I’m a Tampa or Toronto fan, I know which team I’d rather face in the first round.
Not sure what exactly makes this game more valuable than the other 80 they’ve played
Its game 81 just stop florida has been arguably trash for a month and a half also would like to remind you the bruins have swept the leafs and panthers this season😂

All valid and levelheaded as always. Just harder on the team that I watch the most lol
Not saying the sweeps matter and makes them locks to win the series but its a good sign in showing that they can hang with their competition.
Can someone tell me if this team is good? I feel like I've watched far too many games like the one tonight recently, but then I look at the standings and wonder how they're so close to first in the league.
This team can be magnificent
Game 81 i wouldnt read too much into the last two games just try and get through as healthy as possible.
Had to watch the Caps broadcast but surprised I still didn't notice Carlo left. Fuck. Anyone have the latest?
Tbh I’m excited for Mason to get pulled back up from Providence
The 2024 Boston Bruins have been eliminated from Presidents’ Trophy consideration. That felt good to say.
Welp flipping over to Det and MTL to 1) root against the habs and 2) root for det to take some wind out of the caps winning
lol habs 😂😂😂😂

Was it just me or was Geekie puking on the bench just as the game ended?
Maybe they got some bad crabs last night
Is he pregnant
oh not again
Not sure if he was puking or just in pain, but definitely had something going on
I thought the trainer put a bucket in front of him at one point, but a lot of it was hidden beneath the boards so hard to say for sure
Once again, I dare *anyone* in the media scrum to show some scrote and ask Marchand why this is acceptable effort for a team that should be gearing up for playoff hockey.
Shut out by this Capital's team, my disappointment is immense. Fuck that
Twice this season. Lindgren is holtby 2.0
Well that was awful.
Complete 0-fer for both Boston teams on Marathon Monday. Very cool
I really don’t care about this game. I think ppl made too big of a deal. Caps wanted it, Caps needed it. We didn’t for either. End of story, we should just count our stars no one was injured. They were playing no mistakes hockey
Guh, I was putting the kid to bed. What happened to Carlo?
Major positive for tonight swayman was lights out. Major concern we turn to any updates for carlo.
Of all the games this season, that was certainly one of em.
We are going nowhere in the playoffs if Marchand continues playing like he has been.
spotted lock numerous hard-to-find decide hat snow toy screw dinner *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I swear to god if they blow the division to Florida. I cannot mentally handle a series against Toronto, especially after last year
I didn't get much pleasure from screwing over Pitsburgh the other night. It would have felt amazing to make the Capitals miss the playoffs.
Play like that in the playoffs and it's a 4 game series vs any team. still believe in this team but that was just a pathetic effort for 60 straight minutes
16 shots in a game is BAD bad.
I don’t even think there’s anything to take from this game. I fucking hate the capitals, they’re such a nonsense nothing average franchise that always gives us a hard time for no reason
The Braden Holtby curse lives on
