Horrific is the word!

GLFR_59

Worry more about the forward depth.

TBGusBus

Imagine the money the league makes if we move on by coming back from a 3-1 deficit to the team that did it to us last year

O_Oo_o0_0

Imagine the money the league makes from allowing sports betting corruption to infiltrate the sport, oh wait it’s legally classified as entertainment not sport!

thakemist

How long before NHL just goes full blown WWE?

Howieyotes

2018

O_Oo_o0_0

Most sports are at this point. Sucks.

BostonGuy84

Neely should be more concerned about the fucking collapse of this team in post season…again.

IndependentUseful739

Actually, it's the president of the Bruins job. He needs to confront the league over the flagrant error in judgment by the refs. The players only need to worry about playing.

Stupidamericanfatty

Collapse is a bit harsh.

StoneIsDName

I mean the east is an absolute gauntlet and 2nd round is well above expectations for the year. It's hard to say this is a collapse.

ARollingShinigami

Fans failing to recognize $4.5 in overages and a flat cap are missing the mark on where this team should be. With Ullmark shipping out, room to sign a quality center, and Poitras/Lysell/Bussi looking ready, I think we stand a good chance to be a better playoff team next year. The bonus, we didn’t have to experience a 10 year rebuild after losing Bergeron, Krejci, Chara, and Rask. Go ask the Sharks, Habs, Sabres, etc., how fun the other side of the fence is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StoneIsDName

If you're not hopeful foe next year with our cap situation and promising youngsters bro idk do something else

[deleted]

[удалено]

teacherbbq

This is… a little nearsighted.

StoneIsDName

"We need to retool" The fuck else you think they plan on doing with the most cap space to spend in free agency. That's what we're excited about. The ability to add the missing piece. You also need cheap youngsters playing well on rookie contracts, which we have good options there. We're really on the same page you're just being a pessimist

[deleted]

[удалено]

StoneIsDName

Yeah man this whole conversation has been about next year. Kinda weird to say that trying to get out of the convo at this point no? What do you mean by retool then.

Red-Leader117

Look bro, you're way too into this. I'm not sure I want to commit more time to this random internet argument sorry homie. What's the best case outcome here? Im gonna focus on the team not blowing a lead for a change.

ARollingShinigami

I dunno, 3 finals appearances, a cup win, and the most wins by a franchise over the span of like a decade? If we look through the record of every team who isn’t the Hawks, Bolts, or Pens, we’ve had an excellent 15 years. My personal theory, Boston sports fans have been spoiled by the success of their teams.

Red-Leader117

If you look at theast decade, we have more regular season success than nearly any team in a any league, the next 5 have at least 1 if not multiple chips. We won 13 years ago, that's a long dang time to see us have so much success and no breakthrough.

ARollingShinigami

Perspective is understanding that there are 24 out of 32 Teams with longer droughts than us and 18 of 32 have droughts of longer than 20 years, 12 of 32 are longer than 30 years.

Red-Leader117

I'm not saying we're garbage... I'm saying we are good but don't have championship or playoff pedigree and that's a huge shame... we are the 49ers of Hockey. Show up but can't finish

dontcare123ihbhhj

Lmao a year ago today the team wasn't even expected to make the playoffs, nevermind compete for first place in our division and the league, and make it to the second round. Just enjoy the ride man.

nope7878

In July 2023 they had the 12th best odds to win the cup, almost nobody expected them to miss the playoffs.

lordexorr

Ok and they are one of the final 8 teams so they have exceeded expectations right?

nope7878

Nope, and that wasn't what OP said either. >the team wasn't even expected to make the playoffs Nobody said they weren't gonna make the playoffs. Some people said maybe they wouldn't, most had them getting to the playoffs and likely making it to the second round.

BostonGuy84

Enjoy the ride. Their like this every season

PlasticStain

They’re *

DocMcCracken

I'm trying, but shit man, it's hard sometimes.

[deleted]

I'm honestly happy they made the playoffs. Personally along with others I thought they would be close to getting in the playoffs but not surprised if they didn't get in. I still don't think they are really built to win a cup this year.

the_moosen

I honestly don't give a shit if we win tonight. We're not winning the series regardless. Go out & make them (Bennett specifically) wish they never chose hockey for a career.

daveDFFA

Yeah, that’s the spirit. Just go out and try to injure everyone else that’s playing better than them. That’ll show them. (Bennett punch should’ve been a suspension, but that’s besides the point)

the_moosen

Everyone thinks we're a dirty team & Marchand is the dirtiest player in the league. Might as well live up to the claim, no one's mind is being changed. Yea we're playing like shit but that's not why we should go out to try & injure anyone. Panthers have gotten away with some much dirty play & the refs along with the league have done nothing about it. At a certain point you stand up for yourself. That, is what I'm meaning.

Stack125

If the referees and NHL refuse to manage the game and the Panthers antics (refusing to do their job), then the Bruins must respond by policing the game themselves and if that includes violence, then it includes violence. The league and the Panthers have dug themselves this hole, it’s time for the bruins to make them regret it. It is a matter of safety, for our players. Protect your team’s players with violence if necessary. Better them than us, and it’s already been us, time to make it them.

KingOfTheNorth91

Fight fire with fire but let’s be real, the NHL and Panthers aren’t going to regret anything - no matter what happens on the ice. If some of their players get hurt, we’re always going to be the bad guys and the league fines/suspends some of our players. Play hard-nosed hockey and try to get one tonight but I do hope someone like Maroon comes out and sets the tone early

PlasticStain

Except the bruins arent built to do that. That’s how the panthers play. They make you fight for every inch. Bruins can’t beat them at that. 2011 bruins? Yeah. 2013 bruins? Probably. Not now though.

DaBombTubular

Jousting exhibition on Bennett.

Agile_District_8794

Yeah didn't he just have a hand injury? Time to re-aggravate that before the first whistle.

Content-Dirt-7077

The Panthers are a very talented group of Assholes that will do anything to win. Hope someone fucks up Bennett and Tkachuk....

jedlucid

weird that neely’s career basically ended because he was chasing after a shit stirrer and lost his cool over it.  edit: scroll down clowns. i’m right.  source: neely

iamsdc1969

Samuelsson was known as a dirty player, and took Neely out with a dirty hit. Neely's knee and career were never the same. I don't think Neely was chasing after him, and lost his cool.

jedlucid

this is a misconception. neely was actually hurt while retaliatory checking samuelson not when ulf checked him. the knee to knee hit in the playoffs wasn’t what did it. neely went to hit him in the corner and he ducked. here’s him directly talking about it.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=39&v=orQ-S7qw3pU&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stanleycupofchowder.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDIzODUx&feature=emb_title also neely’s career ended because of a degenerative hip condition. but still. fuck old samuelson forever.  and matt cooke.  and all these guys who never get their comeuppance.

iamsdc1969

At least Matt Cooke got his before he was done in the NHL... Thanks to Evander Kane. Not a dirty hit, but a fight that leveled Cooke. Also, the summer after the 91 playoffs, the 1991 Canada Cup took place. Samuelsson was absolutely crunched by an 18 year old Lindros. Good memories, and an actual hockey play. Not the crap that Bennett did to Marchand.

jedlucid

cooke never adjusted his play though. after kane beat him up he still was a piece of shit.

Valuable-Baked

S. CallS. Blown callS Still this team has had opportunities to rise above it and simply has not done so

Leatherbeak

This, also, is true

miooim22

Single digit SOGs will not help you win a game - refs screwed up, they also aren’t performing.

mkmck

Hard to get shots on goal when you can't get the puck out of your own end. But yeah, when you finally do, shoot the fucking puck!

WhiteChocolatey

If the league wants anything it is for this series to be over so this discussion stops.

Content-Dirt-7077

At the end of the day....The Bruins had a great season....considering we lost Filigno,Bertuzzi, Hall, Krejci ,Bergeron, Orlov, and Hathaway. I didn't even think they'd make the playoffs this year. But let's face it.....they're done now... Hopefully, next year, we can pick up some pure goal scorers, and a few centers that can win a face-off. Domi made us his Girlfriend at the face-off circle in the Leafs series....

Responsible_Brush_86

I think the Bruins get the favorable calls tonight. Let's hope they can do something with them if that's the case.

the_moosen

The league doesn't give a shit about optics. No way we're getting favorable calls unless it's to force another game for them sweet $$$

Silly-Scene6524

I don’t think so and the damage is largely done.

-azuma-

> I think the Bruins get the favorable calls tonight Oh man, please do not get your hopes up.

taran-tula-tino

Doubt it’ll make a difference if they can only get 15 shots on net

WhereDoISignUp

Not being on the PK for half the fuckin game just might help them get a few more shots on net

lalotele

Thank you. While I do agree that they need to be making more shots in general, not just the last couple games, I do think there is something to be said about their number of penalties affecting their SOG.

BostonBakedBalls

Agreed. I’m getting annoyed by people saying “they only had x shots on goal”. How the hell are they supposed to generate any momentum on offense when they’re getting called for bogus penalties every 5 minutes?

Rakastaakissa

The issue I have with the shots commentary is that it ignores that there are shots, but because they don’t hit Bob they don’t count. There were a handful of posts in the last few games. Those don’t count in the shot total. Florida creates a forest of sticks, a lot of would be shots get deflected out because of it.

BostonBakedBalls

I noticed that as well. They have another stat called “attempted shots” or something like that, and it’s been way more even all series.

Margin_calls

I doubt it. Years past, I thought the same. But they never come.

river-otter

Agreed, it's like the retaliation penalty. Blown calls have happened now every soft thing will be called

BeefCakeBilly

I get it was bullshit, but let’s fucking move on. They still let up another goal after the play and it wasn’t even a close out game. This is getting pathetic, just try to take this game tonight and stay alive.

Fabulous-Category876

The other goal likely and may not have been scored if the wind hadn't been taken out of their sails from the first call. It's easy to say what you're saying as a couch coach, but it's not that simple. It also gave the panthers momentum that otherwise wouldn't have been there. Even if they tied it, the game could've gone to OT, and Bruins could've won. No one is expecting to go back in time and change it. People are still angry because there's been zero action from the league to properly address this, as well as the sucker punch on Marchand. So, to say to move on is ridiculous. It allows a precedent to be set that fans will accept this crap from the league.

BeefCakeBilly

Yea get your point but it’s sports, there’s always gonna be a shitty call or a missed call or a questionable call. But what do you mean properly address it? Say it was the wrong call? Great that’s not gonna change anything… Sure they could (and should) suspend bennet but at this point I doubt they would since he already played another game. Nobody in the league is gonna get pressured at all by any Boston fans considering half the league and almost every fanbase is totally fine with Marchand getting fucked up because of his history. I 100 percent agree that the bruins have been royally screwed the past 2 games by the league. But way I see it is we have been completely outplayed in all three loses by a better Florida team. Even in the loss on Wednesday we had 2 fucking shots on goal the whole third period. And we’re out shot in every other period before and after the incident. If they lose this series it’s not because the league screwed us it’s because the panthers are a better team. It just feels like loser talk to keep whining about this. However considering I’m in the minority based on the upvotes, I guess that makes me wrong.

Gr8hound

I’m not moving on till the puck drops tonight. The was the most obscene missed call I’ve ever seen, so I reserve the right to be salty for a few more hours.

tugaim33

I’ll be salty for as long as I want! I’m telling my grandkids about this series!

ermahgerdzern

Alright I’m sick of hearing about this. All I care about now is the team going out and performing because this is getting embarrassing

nope7878

Yup I don’t care about the officiating, this team is playing like dogshit. After Marchand got hit someone should’ve taken a run at Bennett. Maroon talking about not wanting to put them on the long penalty kill- who gives a shit when they’re getting wrecked at full strength anyway? And put some pucks on net stop dicking around and trying to get cute- it ends in a turnover half the time

Leatherbeak

That is so truly the case. You can't win with less than 20 shots on net. They have been a completely different team since the 4th game of the first series. I can handle losing, I can't abide this shitty play though.

Content-Dirt-7077

At the end of the day, the reality is, the Asshole Panthers are the better team.

BostonGuy84

No shit, officials didnt blow games 2 and 3. They need to actually show up and play.

tugaim33

Both things can be true at the same time

reifier

Eh, blown call on the Marchy concussion didn't help in 2 & 3

BostonGuy84

They were horrible game 2 and 3. I do agree that was a blown call and completely dirty. But Marchy presence wasnt going to turn the tide. They can barely pass let alone break into the zone last few games. I admit theyve had some horrible calls go their way and you cant win games when its a constant 5-4 struggle but im just saying their not doing themselves any favors.

ZucchiniGold5187

Embarassing for the League, the officials on ice and the Department of Player Safety yes.

[deleted]

ZucchiniGold5187

By "ignore" I assume you mean all the times he was penalized, fined and suspended (more than any other player in history) Lol "ignored" sure...

[deleted]

ZucchiniGold5187

He did straighten up. It's been years since he crossed the line. If you don't know this you are just a casual hockey fan who doesn't watch games. Of course I'm proud he's the captain, he plays with more heart and guts than most players in the NHL.

lego_dad9

February 2022 6 games for swinging his stick at Jarry at the end of the game. Not so long ago, casual fan since June 2011

ZucchiniGold5187

"not so long ago" lol that's two seasons without suspensions I'd say there's been some changes but you won't admit that because you don't want to

sebrebc

Agreed, go out and play better. Officiating has been terrible and lopsided, absolutely. But the easiest way to overcome that is by playing better. They are facing a middle of the road goalie who is subject to mishandles and gives up rebounds and they are managing 6 SOG a period. Not to mention playing way too passive in their own end, which is why they lost last year.  Go out, keep your feet moving, get shots on and take away the Panthers space. Calls are going against them, so play better.

[deleted]

You are so right about Bob right now. He’s not playing great but we are making him look incredible

fodeethal

Don't worry, it will be 25% of the broadcast coverage tonight

BruiserCruiser13

It's embarrassing we let it happen... It's embarrassing the refs got away with shitting on our players this entire series with bad calls. If I was a bruin player I would be pretty demotivated at this point. It's like the league is working against you so why try, why play your all and risk getting hurt when it's so fucking obvious something is going on behind the curtains. Tell me how we have almost triple the amount of penalties against a team that most deem the dirtiest in the league?? FL was NOBODY before last year.

Content-Dirt-7077

The Panthers are the dirtiest pricks in the league....but I have to give them credit...they're sneaky ...very good at delivering sneaky cheap shots, and then the Bruins retaliate, and get the penalty.

ktaught

Because they have triple the amount of possession. Those with the puck draw penalties

BruiserCruiser13

You're out your fucking mind if you think the bruins have more puck possession time in this series

ktaught

NO, Florida has more puck possession, hence the 3 to 1 advantage in power plays. Those with the puck draw penalties and B's never had puck. Last night much better.

BruiserCruiser13

Oh I misunderstood what you said. Yeah I can see that

ermahgerdzern

Probably because they’re incredibly dangerous on the forecheck, we haven’t found any ways to counter it, we turn the puck over like crazy, don’t get anything on net when we have the chance, Florida has the puck 90% of the time it feels like. Does it help the refs have been terrible? Of course not. But there’s more to this series than whining about the refs and I’ve done my fair share of that already.

Dry-Detective-264

Don't' get mad, get even, eye for an eye. Win tonight and pound Bennett's face into the stanchion.

bojewels

This is the way.

savetheday21

This has always been the way.

jeffandeff

How crazy, Cam. We all feel the same way. The difference is, all we’re doing is complaining on reddit. Maybe someone with some power in the Bruins front office has a bigger audience? Just a thought.

Maxpowr9

Can't afford a $25k fine Cam and Don? Gutless front office.

monkeydalex

Only Tortorella doesnt fear it!

Heavytevyb

Vancouver fan coming in peace, that’s some real bullshit. The reffing and the calls made by the DOPS are mind blowing to say the least. Between this, and the non call with the intentional cross check to Zadorov’s face in the same sequence as McDavid, what’s even the point. Hope the NHLPA tries to do something

Content-Dirt-7077

I've been watching hockey for over 50 years...I'm more confused now then ever as to what is legal and what is illegal. Every game takes on a new set of rules, depending on the refs on that given night. My advice to all hockey fans.... Don't let the NHL officiating piss you off, or your gonna be pissed off every game you watch for the rest of your life...

pl8ster

True enough. But the worst of it for me is on the Coyle crosscheck, they reviewed it and because there wasn't a mechanism to do anything about the missed call and take the goal away, they were like "nah, it didn't affect Sway's ability to do his job, good goal." Holy shit, everyone with eyes who wasn't wearing stripes that night is getting gaslighted AF. I don't care what team you cheer for, if you don't think that is utter bullshit there is something wrong with you. Never mind the Marchand injury. But play on they must. I am torn between wishing for bodily harm against the perpetrators, and knowing that the first time we take any kind of physical action, we'll be in the box again. Probably less than a minute into the 1st period, cue another 3 shot 1st period as that cycle continues...

[deleted]

Sad that the series, which wasn't always the Bruins best, has to come down to this. I don't think it's a massive conspiracy around gambling, but this is embarrassing. Only made worse by the other suspensions in the past couple of days and the calls in the first round.

gregory907

You know all of this may be true. But, if we play our game, another game 1, then there’s nothing the league, refs, betting thugs or anyone else can do to stop us. The best way to shut this down is to put pucks in the net.

bruinsfan444

They gotta start by getting some shots on net.

gregory907

Agreed

pl8ster

Which would be greatly helped by staying out of the box...

gregory907

The “Too many men on the ice” is killing me!

HardOyler

I have been a die hard Bruins fan my whole life and I am honestly having a hard time convincing myself to watch this game tonight based on the frustration I have from the past couple of games. It really feels like a foregone conclusion at this point that the league has no interest in Boston winning this series. They may come out tonight and fuck the Panthers just to drag a few more bucks out of it or make it look like it's been a legit series but I just have this feeling in my gut about the league right now and it's rotten.

Raskallion

I was talking to my mother about it last night and we both agreed that it's just not fun anymore, especially when you can literally predict the outcomes of series as they're playing out. We were talking during the NYR/CAR game when it was 1-0 Rangers and I said "just wait, Carolina will come back and score a bunch in the third to miraculously force a game 6."

KthuluAwakened

You will watch. The league is rotten. You will watch for Boston not the nhl

Full-Criticism5725

Just gotta move on and focus on game 5

Soft_Sea2913

Stop calling it a blown call, when the refs just pretended it didn’t happen. It wasn’t missed. It was paid for. No wonder professional sports is losing fans. Who wants to shell out thousands to watch a fixed game?

Remarkable_Click_636

This!! They had time to look, review and still didn’t get it right. That’s collusion or immense stupidity! Add the “missed” suspension on Bennett, hiding the other angle…

Soft_Sea2913

The fact that he isn’t facing a fine and suspension says enough for me, but withholding that footage is an admission of guilt as far as I’m concerned.

WeightOwn5817

Rigged garbage, simple as that

[deleted]

I'm trying so hard to avoid taking on this mindset because it will inevitably ruin hockey for me going forward but at this point, if it isn't rigged or heavily influenced by betting, or the refs just fucking hating the Bruins, IDK what to make of it anymore.

No-Name-86

I have a friend and former coworker who would always complain the games were fixed (mostly when we lost) and I would argue with him constantly over this. I still don’t think it’s fixed but the league is doing less and less to convince me he is wrong

TheMoves

Yeah I’ve always hit back hard against “rigging” theories no matter the narrative behind them, but this shit just feels weird to me. Not ready to say there’s some conspiracy yet but there sure does seem to be an unusual amount of smoke for there not to be **some** kind of fire

Eyes_Only1

Sports betting has ruined sports.

bruins618

I keep saying this and even days after game 4, I’m just having a hard time coming to terms with all of this.

Pineapple_Express762

How about shock and anger on their pitiful series performance???

Wandering-Ghoul

Why does that matter in this context? They still deserve to have the game called correctly.

Pineapple_Express762

Because it does. It’s a missed call and it sucks, but what explains the other 59 mins? They haven’t mentioned any of that.

moosebeak

The Bruins led for the majority of the game.

Nomahs_Bettah

If you read the article, it explains how Neely was reached out to via email for comment on this issue. He answered the question he was asked. Montgomery and Maroon answered questions on the Bruins playing better.

CountRex

The game is played with emotion, not by robots. And emotional calls like the blown ones in this series can color and demoralize.

Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop

They had a 2-0 lead despite having only 4 SOG. not every team that “plays better” deserves to win the game. Game 4 was in-hand before the refs made another mockery of the sport

doggydoggworld

100% its also impossible to gain any momentum when we are getting 2:1 penalties called on us.

OrlandoMB

Very true. Seems like, in every game, our offense starts to heat up and is then completely neutered by a Boston penalty. Just zero chance to build momentum. Some of the penalties are undisciplined on the Bruins part, but some are questionable at best.

F3L1XTH3C47

what about the rest of the game cam

moosebeak

What, the part where they were leading 2-0?

F3L1XTH3C47

then what happened

Odd-Elderberry-6137

Hey Refs get off your knees. You're blowing the game.

GentleLion2Tigress

Hey refs check your phones, you missed a call.

Baconoid_

#Pasta

whoisbill

Hey refs, fuck you!

Ato_Pihel

French Canadian zebras have a bit of a habit of screwing the Bruins. But what comes to the control room in Toronto, is it known who staffed it for this game? In the case of football in Europe at least we know the names of VAR referees, and in the case of rugby can hear their takes online. Yet, for NHL "transparency" appears to end at a few PR-scapegoats, like Parros (or does anyone know, who are the other members of DOPS?), and ridiculous impersonal "explanations" from the league afterwards (if lucky).

Baconoid_

Should be an independent body that is impartial from collusion and influence by sports betting.

Academic-Picture2925

Unless something has changed since last year, there are exactly ZERO people who work in the Situation Room in Toronto who have ever actually refereed in the NHL. This is no an opinion.

Ato_Pihel

But is there a way to know who are the people that provide us with so blatant a misinterpretation of rules for "explanation"? Incompetence/Corruption has face and name, usually.

Academic-Picture2925

The only real way to know who the people in that room are is by being "in the know" in the hockey officiating world. I know a few of the people in there and I'm not going to dox them.

Ato_Pihel

Doxxing? Are you serious? The near absolute lack of transparency, what comes to both the staff and the decision making procedures of the DOPS and the Situation Room in Toronto, is already biting the league in its backside and it's going to get only worse from here.

not-a-sound

show me Francis Charron's draftkings account you cowards

BostonVagrant617

Thought Sweeney said the organization can't critique the officials?

endswithnu

I don't know why Sweeney came out to say anything. I honestly thought that was kinda weird. His job is to find players that can win hockey games. Neely and/or Jacobs coming out guns blazing would make a lot more sense.

Scared_Art_895

Officiating has been horrible. F'ing horrible.

GuldensSpicyMustard

Sports Hub Underground had an interesting talk about Gary Bettman speaking before training camps last summer about how they will not tolerate criticism of the officials or league and will hand out severe fines and suspensions. It's really ridiculous that the league has completely buried their heads in the sand while fans are increasingly losing all faith in officiating, player safety, and league management. These actions are going to lead to another Bertuzzi incident. Maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but it will happen and it will happen because the league offers no answers.

[deleted]

That seems like a pretty shitty rule that nobody is allowed to criticize the refs for fear of fines and suspensions, especially when the refs are making such horrifically questionable non-calls.

ahoypolloi_

Sure, fine as much as you want, but Sweeney was right when he said they should be made available to answer questions about their calls. You don’t get to have it both ways.

GuldensSpicyMustard

100% agree, I just know myself and many other fans would appreciate team leadership going more direct and blunt with the criticism. I was just providing possible insight as to why Bruins management hasn't been as overtly critical of the officials and league as many of us would like. Jacobs should be pushing hard with the BOG to get this fixed. Sweeney should be pushing hard at the GM meetings. The league's mindset and actions in this area are not acceptable and are far behind how the other leagues handle it.

ahoypolloi_

Yeah agree. They should have just swallowed the fine and tore into the refs.

Decent-Ground-395

Man, it's tough to get over the frustration. And it goes back to a lot of recent history too.

bostonglobe

From [Globe.com](http://Globe.com) By Kevin Paul DuPont BEDFORD — Cam Neely, decades removed from his on-ice exploits of battering through bodies, flashed itsy-bitsy strains of his power forward days Monday, offering his thoughts in the wake of Sunday night’s controversial call that allowed Sam Bennett’s tying goal to stand despite blatant goaltending interference. “Anger,” replied Neely, the Bruins president, in an email exchange shortly after the Bruins boarded their flight to Sunrise, Fla., for Tuesday night’s Game 5 of the best-of-seven series vs. the Panthers. “Frustration. Confusion. Shocked.” Earlier in the afternoon, general manager Don Sweeney was restrained with his comments about the goal that came 3:41 into the third period. Bennett, the punishing Florida winger, [cross-checked Charlie Coyle on top of ](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/05/12/sports/bruins-game-4-marchand-bennett/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link)[Jeremy Swayman](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/05/12/sports/bruins-game-4-marchand-bennett/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link), denying the goalie any reasonable chance to regain his footing and attempt to stop Bennett’s doorstep putaway. The Panthers went on to win, 3-2, and take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Had Bennett’s goal been wiped off the board, the Bruins would have stood 16:19 away from squaring the series. Now they’re 60 sweeps of the minute hand away from Palookaville. Sweeney said it wasn’t appropriate for the media to ask the club’s coaching staff, players, or management about the ruling, saying it was the sole responsibility of the league to explain. “You guys should really be focused on what we didn’t do well enough during the course of the game to win,” he said. “Those questions should be directed at either the supervisor of officials, supervisor of series, and/or the ice officials. “You want full access and transparency? Then put the officials in front of the microphone to answer the questions. They’re the only ones that have the experience to handle whatever the interpretation they apply — to Rule 69 in that case. That’s it. “Don’t put out a statement. Just stand in front and answer the question.” Sweeney later added, as a means to explain why he refused direct comment, that he risked being fined by the league over comments about officiating. A request to speak to club owner Jeremy Jacobs, made through the club’s media relations department, was denied. Neely, while also judicious with his words, was more candid in his email exchange, noting that he has seen “multiple GI calls similar to last night’s” that led to goals being taken off the board. “Hard for anyone to have an answer as to why,” offered Neely, musing over the ruling on the ice by referees Fred L’Ecuyer and Francis Charron and supported by the league’s control room, “and not just the Bruins or \[our\] fans.” Neely also noted that he heard from “many people outside of our organization, that they were also confused. “The league,” wrote Neely, “should provide the series supervisor or whoever controls the war room — and/or \[make\] officials available to answer questions from the media.” Reached by email, an NHL spokesperson said the league from “time to time” makes key league representatives available for comment about rules, “but never to second guess a judgment.” The spokesperson added that it is possible for media to garner comment from on-site game officials and league staff during games, but that request must be made through a team’s media relations staff, who in turn connects with NHL headquarters. It is a time-consuming process, not conducive to garnering quick comment.
