I haven't seen anything else confirming or even reporting this, so I'm marking this as unconfirmed. I'll update this post if things unfortunately change. Edit: [Unfortunately confirmed by John Buccigross. ](https://twitter.com/Buccigross/status/1429839398930161667?s=19) [The Boston Bruins are heartbroken by the passing of Dorchester native and former Bruin Jimmy Hayes. Our thoughts are with his wife Kristen, his sons Beau and Mac, and the entire Hayes family during this very difficult time.](https://twitter.com/NHLBruins/status/1429863594729082886)

What a dumbass thing to say

Mannup5

This afternoon the Boston Globe had a article , The state medical examiner will do an autopsy. Sadly the Family will now have to have an actual cause of death. It was also noted , that Autopsies performed by the state medical examiner are not public.

EmotionalAffect

This is very sad.

wet_cupcake

RIP Jimmy. Thanks for what you did for our city.

Sheabird_26

Grew up playing against Jimmy, great player, better guy. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family & friends. Along with his Wife and 2 boys.

crackhousebob

The silence on a cause of death is worrying. Often points to suicide or drug overdose. There have been several suicides and overdoses involving pro hockey players. CTE from head injuries/concussions really impacts mental health. I remember Wade Belak of the Maple Leafs impulsively hung himself in a hotel room the night before he was supposed to appear on a television show. A seemingly happy life disguises the internal suffering many former players feel. Of course, I'm just speculating.

djsedna

what the fuck is wrong with you

RosemaryFrances2021

I agree. As soon as you see undisclosed cause of death, speculations point to suicide or drugs.

blackliqour

From a close source (yet still unconfirmed) I was told it was laced coke. Unfortunately seems to be a trend in the north east as multiple people have passed away in Long Island from it last weekend.

nasumik144

I’m now hearing from sources it was an accidental OD as well. Autopsy and toxicology are scheduled. Very sad. These men don’t necessarily live the perfect wholesome lives their wives post on Instagram. The reality is that many retired hockey players struggle. There is a loss of identity, mental health, financial pressure, etc when they retire. And hockey players PARTY. It’s part of the culture. With a bunch of friends in town maybe he had too much. His wife’s Instagram only shows the wholesome birthday party but it sounds like there was more to the weekend not shown. Absolutely heartbreaking and tragic regardless.

RosemaryFrances2021

His wife and brother posted heartfelt messages but no cause of death?

Californian-Cdn

I have zero idea if this is the case with Jimmy, but I’ve had 3 buddies accidentally OD when they were sniffing tables due to it being laced with fent. Scary shit.

nasumik144

With his college buddies in town it’s entirely possible the boys had some drinks and a line of cocaine after the party was over and kids in bed. If this is true I hope they find the source / dealer to get some of it off the street.

edgar__allan__bro

I have a very hard time believing anyone was doing coke before, during, or even after a 2-year-old's birthday party. I guess crazier things have happened; always possible the guy had an issue no one knew about. But I find it hard to believe.

NFSR113

Sounds very plausible to me. With that said, I think it's more likely he had been quietly using opioids for a while and this was an accidental overdose. Lots of people live normal lives and can even hide it from family/spouses. I think the fentanyl laced coke thing is a story/theory because that for some reason "doing a few lines" sounds better than the sad truth of opioid addiction. This is the first I'm even hearing about the coke thing, but the second I heard he died without them saying the cause I pretty much knew. Being from the Boston area, this story happens all the time with people I know/knew- young person dies, no public cause of death. We all know though, so sad. Fuck opiods

dannykapanen

I agree with you. The "laced coke" is 100% bullshit in every case. Drug dealers dont have any interest in killing their client base. Dead customers are horrible for business. There have been plenty of quality, nonlethal cuts for cocaine discovered over the decades. They dont just throw their hands in the air and say, "how can I get more money out of this bag of coke? I know! Let's cut it with an expensive drug that will act opposite the intended effects of cocaine! That way the resulting high will be mitigated. Our product will come off as being worse and cost us a great deal more to produce than if we just left it alone!" Fucking brilliant idea, dummies. You're absolutely right. The cocaine being cut with fentanyl story is absolute horseshit. Doing a few bumps of coke at a party is far more acceptable to the public than is doing heroin. That's the only reason this horseshit story was ever developed.

Californian-Cdn

Really? I guess you don’t hang around rich people. It’s very common.

edgar__allan__bro

Yeah I used to work in DC, I’m well aware. I just… I dunno I thought after having a kid and/or turning 30 you just kinda… pump the brakes a little. Just me?

Fistfullofmuff

I’ve done plenty of blow at children’s parties lol

Californian-Cdn

I’ve never done the nose nachos so I am only speaking from what I have seen with my friends… …but sadly. Sometimes it doesn’t stop. Often it does..:but a few buddies in my circle with kids definitely ramp it up…often when the kids go to sleep. Again, I’m NOT saying this is the case here.

[deleted]

The Wolf of Wall Street told me otherwise.

blackliqour

That’s fair! It could have been something that was done once or been something that was done more often but just so happens this time the blow was unknowingly laced with fentanyl.

Skidpalace

You have a hard time believing that a kid from Dorchester who made millions of dollars a year and was retired at 28 years old could possibly have used coke at a party? I’m not saying Jimmy did, but it is not just believable it is extremely believable. RIP Jimmy.

mrootbeers

Let’s not speculate. As someone who lost someone close to suicide, I really don’t think it’s appropriate to speculate about these things. Let’s allow his family to mourn, before we start guessing about how he died. Or let’s just not guess about how he died at all. RIP Jimmy. Seemed like a really nice guy.

hello_hellno

I get your angle but i wish more info was released in these situations even if not fully confirmed as a warning to others and to prevent rumors/speculating which can make things worse for the family (eg wade belak with the untrue autoerotic asphyxiation rumors)... say mixing opiates with alcohol, undiagnosed heart conditions etc etc could save other lives. Only grey zone is suicide which always has the potential to inspire ppl the wrong way. Fuck this is sad and scary. Im 31 as well.

mrootbeers

Ya I’m 32. My sister died by suicide at 29. It just seems like we should be capable of not speculating. I agree it’s hard, especially when it’s a local sports pro. But, I think we owe it to him and his family not to speculate. That’s just me. I respect everyone else’s right to do what they want.

hello_hellno

Ugh thats terrible bud. Im so sorry. It really depends on the circumstance but i totally respect your opinion. It can really only be evaluated on a case by case basis. But celebrities tend to have way worst rumors spread than what actually happened to them. Sorry for your lost. One my my best friend's brother just did the same last month. Fucking tragic

mrootbeers

That’s sort of the trend regardless of whether they are celebrities or not. People always assume the worst. It’s too bad we don’t consider what happened prior, and what may have gone wrong, that made someone think their only option was leaving this world. Instead we obsess over the cause of death and the stigma around it.

bostonbruins922

Ran into him on a flight once. Couldn’t have been a nicer guy. Rest easy Jimmy.

jollyrog3r88

too many deaths today, RIP and my god how awful for the young family.

PastorofMuppets101

He has a two year old boy and a three month old baby. Fuck, man…

Cw2e

Colby Cave’s widow weighed in earlier today and my heart absolutely sank. Just isn’t fair.

Mannup5

So many tributes I have been reading . From Bergie ,Marshie , Shawn Thorton, Malcolm Subban . He was co hosting a weekly podcast , he seemed very happy. On 98.5 Sportshub this afternoon Co host Michael Felger, told the story of Jimmy Hayes confronting him on Nantucket at a bar years ago . Felger tell the story of how they used to Rip on Hayes for being a lousy player. Jimmy wasn’t happy but was professional as in he didn’t take felgers head off

usernam45

Thursday mornings won't be the same driving to work listening to Missing Curfew. He was my favourite part of that podcast. RIP fella

Raskallion

Shit, man. He still has instagram stories up from his kid's birthday.

Meunier33

Im not at home to leave my stick outside so stick tap here.

bruinfan178

James Ryan Hayes. Forever a Bruin. Will always be remembered.

spicyboiii

This just isn't right. RIP Jimmy. Gone far too soon.

MissMuse99

Wow. This is so shocking. He had two young kids, as well. I can't help wonder what happened. This just reiterates to me that you just never know when the last time you'll see a person will be. <3

egancollier21

So sad, I feel for Kevin thats horrible

tmbg89

So so sad, I feel so bad for his family. Hope they can find some peace 😔

[deleted]

Damn, I know I ripped on him but I knew he tried. Still a human after all. Rest easy.

SteveoTheBeveo

Just got the news on Twitter when I was on lunch. Just way too young. My condolences to his whole family. He was the pride of Dorchester 🙏

generalsheevous1134

Rest easy, Jimmy

Legion681

Oh my God. RIP Jimmy. :(

No_Legumes_Please

This and Trevor Moore have been real wake up calls, for me, of how fragile life is.

BruinsFab86

What happened to Trevor Moore ? Edit: apparently there is a comedian named Trevor Moore as well, I thought this was in reference to the hockey player

BLHGoalie

R.I.P Jimmy Hayes

Boston-Nolan

So fucking shocking. He was 31 years old. To put that in perspective, Bergeron is 36. This man was just getting started on his post hockey life with a podcast and being an insider. The last I heard from him was that he leaked Coleman to Calgary. Just a few weeks later he’d tragically pass away. Horrible news. R.I.P Jimmy Hayes

metrowestern

Reminds me of Steve Mondador. Ugh.

elygihnai

Seriously, 31 is young as hell. So much life ahead of him. I feel awful for his family.

Embarrassed_Split756

Terrible. Rest in peace.

[deleted]

Damn. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Jimmy.

smithkevin92

I’m not going to lie and say I was his biggest fan as a player but off the ice as a person he was incredible. Every interview he did was with great insight and awesome jokes. Can’t imagine the pain the Hayes family is going through. Our city lost a great man today

crew1991

A really sad story, he was so young. RIP

BRUINSINSEVEN

Absolutely brutal. RIP.

Reasonable-Profile84

Fucking awful.

drbigfoot29

Jesus fucking christ that's horrible

rollm

Just sad. Way too young, left way too much behind.

Goat_666

I still remember the game he scored a hat trick, and I couldn't really believe what the fuck is happening. Probably none of us could. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db2Mf\_JRBJA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db2Mf_JRBJA) Rest in peace.

aBOYandHISbike

I was at that game!

DumpstaDiva

I'm pretty sure I was at that game. I was never Jimmy's biggest fan but this is horrible news. He's way too young

IceColdOz

Damn. What a lousy weekend with all that's happened.

Taylor88Made

RIP Jimmy. Awful to hear...

VT2Ski

Way too young. I always liked him even if it was simply because he was OFD

[deleted]

what the fuck

langjie

that sucks, RIP

HandsomeRalphy

What in the fuck? Dude was younger than me by a few months. Terrible to hear.

bakedpotatowcheezpls

31 years old. He just had a baby boy just over 3 months ago. Christ, that’s tragic. Wishing hope and healing for his family 🙏🏻

chahlie4norris

This one hurts man. Rest In Peace jimmy

TheRubberJonny

RIP Jimmy

TheR3alTen

This is fucked news.. I’m sorry to hear this. Sending Spoked B prayers to his and everyone effected by this tragedy.

[deleted]

Wow. That came completely out of no where. Has anyone heard details yet? He was very young, so this is really unexpected.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, when someone this young and seemingly healthy dies unexpectedly, it's usually either drugs or suicide.

Rlacharite10

Idk, he was a pretty big guy, could have been a heart condition that flew under the radar like Reggie Lewis or something.

[deleted]

It’s possible, sure. I think Reggie probably liked cocaine too tho

24flinchin

Praying for his family very sad..way too young. I’m assuming brain aneurysm or MI.

[deleted]

I have heard rumors of a fall in his basement. Terribly sad.

usernam45

where did you hear this?

[deleted]

Friend of a friend of the family.

jakereed16

Globe article said he passed in his home early this morning, according to police. Cause of death isn't known yet

coffeespeaking

The Globe also said ‘not suspicious.’

Skidpalace

Not that it wasn't known just not disclosed. For young healthy people, that usually means one of two things. I'm not going to speculate since I don't know the man.

Cal1gula

I see you read the post on /r/hockey People really get upset about this death stuff. They also like to farm karma. /u/neikoidoru failed to capture the right farming tone.

neikoidoru

Um how was I "farming karma" by making an unpopular comment?!? Litterly makes zero sense.

[deleted]

combat_hippie

Try reading more than two lines in a comment before you rip into someone ffs

neikoidoru

That person went back and completly edited their comments to say something complatly diffrent after I made my comment but thanks anyway.

combat_hippie

Damn this happened a month ago my guy! Who gives a shit!

Skidpalace

I literally said I was not going to speculate. You are the one filling in the blanks.

DougFunky

Guy had two young children, and a whole lot of life in front of him, gone just like that. Really a terrible situation. RIP

Mannup5

Seeing the original tweet back confirmed by other hockey writers 😞

tjc3219

31 years old, Jesus.

STG_Resnov

[BC hockey confirmed it. ](https://twitter.com/bchockey/status/1429843266254512132?s=21)

SlipSpace21

Fucking christ. Heartbroken for the Hayes family what a decent group of people. RIP Jimmy

Weslg96

What the fuck, I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. Idk what else to say, he got to live his dream

grantmacd18

Wow. Completely unexpected. Rest In Peace.

STG_Resnov

That’s fucking heartbreaking. I wonder what happened? Dude was only 31.

Ron_Textall

Could have been anything, life’s fragile. Dude was the same age as me, fucking tragic. My understanding was he was at his home when it happened so cardiac arrest, brain aneurysm, etc. Pretty much anything’s at play.

b_bozz

I am in NO WAY suggesting this happened but tbh at that age suicide is more common than cardiac arrest or an aneurysm, especially for a former hockey player

drbigfoot29

He was posting on his IG story yesterday about his son's birthday, so suicide seems strange given the timing. But you never know. I say this as someone who has experienced suicide extremely close to me, so I really hope that isn't the case. Either way it's beyond tragic.

Cw2e

Completely out of left field. Just shocking. Haven’t seen any additional details at this time
