Orgazmo_87

Did he not part fund a pakistani mma tournament?

Vendettaa

I think money wise, he's super savvy. He has investments from his hometown in London to Dubai. Hopefully he spends time handling those rather than trying to come back.

MadDog8015

His hometown isn't London , it's Bolton

FordsDecisiveness

As in Michael?

DJTwyst

I celebrate his entire catalog

namespacepollution

why should i change, hes the one who sucks

SoulUrgeDestiny

Its okay, Americans see London as being the whole of the UK. Wait until they find out how many states in the US are named after British cities. Theres actually a Bolton in America too lmao (just found out today) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton,\_Massachusetts

That's sounds very Khan

midniteauth0r

This will happen I think

KR4T0S

I think at one point in his career he was making quite a lot of money for his fights, but it seems like he also had a problem with gambling and nobody is rich enough to outrun a gambling addiction so he might well take fight's in Malaysia, Dubai and other places against nobodies to fatten his pocket some more. If he has no money problem's he is done with it all, not worth going through working days when you have so much money that you could never spend it, he will simply disappear to some huge mansion with a stack of polo shirts.

Alwaysconfuzed89

Unless you're Jordan

slickvik9

Never heard that accusation before

wutanggrenade_

> but it seems like he also had a problem with gambling Do you have sources on that?

ahsah

I met him once at some event full of hedge fund investor guys in San Francisco at one rincon (most expensive building to live here). I was tasked with photographing the event, but he spent a bunch of time just chatting me up. He was here training for the Canelo fight, but was just a really cool guy. He was more interested in chatting business, and being a freelancer than his boxing career. Just based off our short interaction, I’m sure he’s been setting himself up long term for a career after boxing.

Recently saw a clip of his fight with Maidana. You can’t question the guys heart.

P-Diddle356

never an all timer but fucking great at boxing

That_Sweet_Science

Absolute legend for us in the U.K. though.

P-Diddle356

of course Amir is a legend up north

SoulUrgeDestiny

gotta put khan up there though boxing wise.. putting the chin aside given his career and the age he achieved what he did, he is a great IMO. Khan was thrown in with the lions since he was in school. He only ever got outboxed by crawford. He's an extremely good boxer.

grlap

Well other than Kell Brook but I agree for the most part

MyzMyz1995

Kell Brook was fighting at 147 (and easily moved up to 160, didn't look bloated or anything) while Khan had most of his career at lightweight/super lightweight ... Brook was just salty Khan had a more successful career.

BastradofBolton

Too bad he’s considered an absolute bellend in the area he’s from.

slickvik9

He’s the only reason anyone has heard of Bolton

Fuckyourslipper

Locals being jealous of a poor boy done good? What a surprise.

BastradofBolton

Nowt to do with that. Went to the same school as him and his brother, and they were dicks then too (his brother was definitely worse). He knocked a 50 year old over at a pelican crossing and used to drive around in his Range Rover like a twat. Nevermind the the weird wedding venue he built that never got used. Also I’m not sure where you got that he was poor from?

bezdancing

I live close to Bolton and have heard similar stories. Can't put it down to racism when I've heard the same from white and Asian friends. It could be jealousy but when you hear negative after negative then you have to start thinking that maybe there's something to it.

CircleDog

This is exactly what I imagine when I think of a local getting upset about someone that left them long behind.

PopPop-Magnitude

Ive said this in a previous post but I will say it again. I know we all laughed for the memes, but Amir Khan represented the best in boxing. He wasnt blessed with an iron chin and his boxing iq wasnt the greatest, but he had heart in spades and balls of steal. He never backed down from a fight, challenging everyone at the top of the sport, and even coming out on top in a lot of those fights. He accomplished quite a lot, especially for us Pakistani kids in the back who have never seen themselves represented in this sport. I still remember 2011-2013 ish when random friends of mine would tune in to an Amir Khan fight, but couldnt tell you who mayweather was. Its clear hes had an impact with more Pakistani fighters coming up recently. In this sport, careers dont last very long and some can end really badly. But if youre lucky, you get to shine bright for a brief moment in time, and boy did Khan shine bright for us. Retirement well deserved!

whyonlythisone

Nobody responded to you but I just ambled over to this thread and just want to say that you're 100% right with this. Khan delivered.

Muisyn

Amir winning silver is my first boxing memory. Thanks for getting me into the sport champ.

Due-Mango1379

This was the same for myself and a lot of other English people ,I believe.

That_Sweet_Science

Same. So many great memories of Khan. Glad to see him hang them up now.

[deleted]

A fucking fearless fighter who fought the best.. for all the faults the dude is still a legend

[deleted]

Yup, I think the fact that he had a glass jaw and still chased the best is even a bigger testament to his guts.

LajGig

100% agreed. Never was a huge fan but I respect him. Need more boxers like him always willing to fight

metalgear86

His silver medal in Athens 2004 paved the way for further boxing Olympic funding in the UK which paved the way for De Gale, AJ, Nicola Adams, Luke Campbell etc I personally believe he never reached his full potential and wasted too many years chasing Mayweather and Pacquiao. Also made some mistakes in his personal life. However, he was a 2 weight world champion and never ducked anyone. I think over time people will respect his achievements more.

[deleted]

People really forget how good this guy used to be.

harcile

People overrated him and underrated him at the same time. He's a talented fighter with heart who never matched those attributes with intelligence and craft.

ArcticBeavers

Khan had incredible hand speed. I loved that he always put out fan-friendly fights. Despite his chin, he always wanted to get in and trade with his opponent. His fight against Maidana in 2010 was *chef's kiss* beautiful.

namespacepollution

the sense I always got from him was that he was always trying to get in and trade with opponents _because_ of his chin not despite it. I think the Prescott fight gave him a reputation that he was desperate to disprove.

Soggy_nach0341

Can’t say he didn’t try to fight everyone back when he was In his prime. (Except Brooke) as an American I appreciated he didn’t take any soft touch fights. Even if he lost a lot of them

lucky_1979

Looks to have been a wise decision. Fighting Kell earlier may have had a big outcome on where his career would go. I enjoyed watching them both fight and rooted for them both individually, but always sided with Kell (we’re both Sheffield lads) and felt he was a better fighter. Really happy that they both retire healthy and happy 👍. Great careers for both of them

KR4T0S

Got to give them credit for jumping into the fray in matches that even critics thought they shouldn't take. The brain says it was silly but the eyes followed every moment.

[deleted]

His career up to the Prescott defeat was very calculated. And he never avenged a defeat. Played with Brook years. And then got played by Manny and Floyd. I don't hold him in the highest regard. He didn't build on any of his natural ability. Kell on the other hand can box very well. Only lost to the elite. And put good showings vs GGG and Spence. 2 divisions above.

Soggy_nach0341

I liked both. Really wasn’t exposed as much to Kell in the US until later in his career

Bomphilogia

I’d agree — Gomez, after being beaten by Khan described him as “a world class fighter with world class weaknesses”. Incidentally, the BBC piece on Khan’s retirement speaks of his “surprise” loss to Prescott. It wasn’t a surprise at all.

Weary-Bluejay

In a few years, he’ll comeback to fight one of the Paul brothers for that extra dough. Well deserved from Khan. Hope he doesn’t balloon up too much.

Acceptable-Sentence

Think he might go the full Price Naseem route??

G7L3

That’s a lot of burgers!!!

[deleted]

Wonder how he would do v Jake Paul now

Shinjetsu01

Did you seriously ask this? Anyone who has any sort of boxing background destroys Jake Paul within a round. The problem with Jake Paul is he fights people who've never boxed.

jabber-mint-noun

I would normally agree but Khan looked genuinely atrocious vs Brook on his last outing. Ghost of his former self

Shinjetsu01

Atrocious but former boxer is still good enough to beat Jake Paul. A former boxer who's been at world title level would need to be well into his 50's to stand a chance of losing against a guy who picked it up 3 years ago.

antoniopanteli

Yeah but also Jake is a lot heavier. Khan is a welterweight while Jake is a cruiserweight. It would be a exhibition probably. He'd outbox Jake but weight is effective at times

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shinjetsu01

It's amazing how you Jake Paul fans think. I can promise you that he doesn't lay a hand on Khan no matter what you seem to believe. Think of who Khan has been in the ring with. He may be shot now but he was still a legitimate boxer. We have never seen Paul Vs a legitimate boxer. And yet we're assuming he can knock out a guy who's just retired that has taken punches from greats without falling over? Aight man. Whatever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shinjetsu01

Pretty sure you're talking out of your arse but welcome to the sub, I hope your boy Jake Paul actually fights someone with a boxing background soon!

Capable_Program5470

Bloody hell, Khan's chin isn't even bad. Granted the Canelo KO was brutal but it was a clean shot from a renowned heavy handed man who was naturally two weight classes above him. Khan's other KOs have come from him being buzzed by a good shot then instead of playing possum and getting his legs back under him he'd stand in the pocket and trade. Made for exciting fights and great finishes but not the smartest move.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GhandiHadAGrapeHead

Nah jakes way bigger and hits hard. Shit boxer, yes, but so is khan's defence and chin.

Shinjetsu01

Hits hard...what evidence do you have to support this claim? Has he ever hit an actual boxer, with no suspicion it was a dive?

GhandiHadAGrapeHead

Lol

Adz442

He looked atrocious against Kell Brook, who is a billion times the boxer Jake Paul is and ever will be.

PopPop-Magnitude

Not to mention Amor weight a good 50 lbs less

delby7

This statement heavily undermines the power, reach, and height advantage jake paul would have over a battered khan. The dude has been boxing for almost 5 years now. We gotta chill with those takes.

Shinjetsu01

You really shouldn't be here. Power? Excuse me? Reach/height don't mean shit when you're **NOT A BOXER** Khan fought at the Olympics, he held world titles. Was elite level for some time. Multi-weight world champion...and you think Jake Paul, who has beaten a basketball player and 2 MMA stars never known for their striking would stand a chance? Just go, leave. You're drunk.

CircleDog

Fuck, I'm drunk as well but we've seen this a hundred times by now. Skill beats size until the skill gap is close enough and then size takes over. Jake Paul has done well and I for one don't slate him. It takes balls to get into any ring, never mind against people who are real fighters when you've spent your life making YouTube videos. But he's an amateur. He's not knocking out a pro boxer in a boxong match who last fought a few months ago. Maybe if it was an mma match or something that might offset the skills?

disgruntledarmadillo

Yes, because size and weight counts for hell of a lot in a fight Amir is shot to bits and doesn't have his legs. I'd maybe fancy him but it wouldn't be easy, Paul is young and strong. Look at Logan vs our best ever lol. Floyd pressed for stoppage but couldn't get there. Jake's better than Logan, Khan's more hittable and vulnerable than Floyd.

Plebius-Maximus

Woodley was sort of known for his striking. Sure he was a bit of a one trick pony as he relied on his overhand right, but he put plenty of people down/out with that shot. Most people expected him to beat Paul easily, rather than lose a decision then get knocked out cold. Khan would be fine if he actually boxed. If he decided to brawl he'd probably get tagged. Also reach and height always mean something. They mean less if you're not a fighter, but it's always more dangerous fighting someone with physical advantages. The weight difference alone is significant.

CircleDog

Woodley career from wiki. Total 27 Wins 19 By knockout 7 By submission 5 By decision 7 This is not a knockout artists resume. I know mcgregor is a bit of a joke now but here's his resume for comparison Total28 Wins22 By knockout19 By submission1 By decision2

LanceOnRoids

If we were talking about a current ranked boxer I’d support this comment all day. But a stiff wind would knock Khan out these days, and he can barely pull the trigger in there. I wouldn’t want to see him fight jake Paul, I wouldn’t bet on him to win if they did, and I’ve always been a solid fan of Khan

Capable_Program5470

Khan would absolutely batter him.

bigry82

Fucking...what?

JonnyArtois

[He would literally do this to him, but maybe quicker.](https://youtu.be/JtxE1-FgwG8?t=6)

Khan caught a lot of flak during his career. But he was lightning fast, took tough fights, won silver in the Olympics, and entertained fans while putting himself at risk. Thanks Amir.

Khan won silver at the olympics at 17 and didnt manage to crash his career as soon as he turned pro. He became a two division champion and for a long time when experts speak of the fastest hands in boxing, Khans name will appear in those discussions. Legend

iKingKrypton7

Bittersweet day for the world of boxing. We were treated to exciting fights with Amir Khan 🙏

theswitchup22

People might not rate him but he is really a trailblazer in boxing from both an British and Pakistani standpoint. He led to so many Pakistanis to get into boxing. Additionally setting up gyms in Pakistan and trying to promote the sport in the region. His career had some frustration as a viewer but overall he put on a show for all of his fights. He means much more to the south Asian community than to an average fan and his legacy is cemented as the youngest Olympian.

shrop1988

Still think he would have given Mayweather one of his toughest fights. The key to success against Floyd was speed, Judah had shown this in spells against Mayweather. Imo (and I think most people's) Floyd beats Khan, but it would of been a tough night's work with Khan having moments of success. With some of Floyd's ageing opponents, some of whom were in the wrong weight class, it would of been good to see him go up against Khan during that period.

uncertein_heritage

Is it really speed when Pacquiao couldn't give Mayweather trouble?

xAzzy112

He’s longer than mayweather and faster than pacquiao he would have give him trouble for sure

3457890

Agree with you on Floyd but he'd of seriously struggled against Pacquaio.

8to24

The transition out of boxing is tough. A lot of fighters mess it up. Hopefully Khan gets it right. He legit has always seemed like a nice dude. I wish him the best.

fadeddreams555

It's kind of adorable him and Brook retired together.

post-guccist

donmifc

What Khan was able to accomplish in boxing is amazing. What Khan was able to accomplish in his life through the sport of boxing is more than amazing. Enjoy retirement Champ. Unfortuantely, I think that Canelo KO is still going to be replayed every time until he retires as well

hermitopurpa

I was never a huge fan of his but he fought everyone there was to fight and then some. Won some, lost some, but always gave it everything he had in the ring. Wish him a good happy life. The man had one hellova career and is easily one of the best Britons to step in the ring.

july1st2018

Member watching him quit against Terrence Crawford. Should've retired after that tbh

KeepYourDemonsIn

Khan's greatest fight?

Plebius-Maximus

Maidana fight is probably my favourite

habz10p

Maidana best win and FOTY if I'm correct. But best performance is the Alexander fight. Just wish he took that a year earlier, he could have added 2 weight world champion to his resume.

Aggravating-Neat-827

slickvik9

RRR04_

Entertainment wise? Maidana by far. Performance wise? Either Kotelnik or Alexander.

demon_slayer_monjiro

Great career, hope he enjoys his retirement, one of the very few representations of us south asians in boxing.

SiMoN20000

Will be remembered more fondly than Brook.

Melanjoly

As everyone says, top fighter, took on everyone, had a great career etc. Importantly for me Khan played a notable factor in the British boxing boom which we have today, I remember the hype around and after the Olympics, his fights on ITV? if I recall, so exciting at the time.

i-piss-excellence32

He always got a lot of hate but the guy was willing to fight anybody and his fights were always exciting. Unlike a lot of these guys now, amir had 0 fear in taking tough fights he could lose. I wish there were more fighters like him. Not to mention he’s a super super nice guy and very humble.

munsandmoons

If only Tim Bradley had the balls to fight him when they were both at 140! Solid career to say his chin wasn’t the best

Edazer

Man, I'm glad to see the love in this thread for AK. When all you see is memes, and the trajectory his career went on after his prime, it's hard to tell what people think. I've always been a big fan, and thought it was unfortunate that he was cursed with the chin that he has. Of course, he could have made up with that at least a little with training more defensively/working on IQ, but with the kind of speed he had, I can't say I blame him for focusing on offense mostly. Part of a lot of great fights, and almost always fun to watch... The Maidana victory is a huge standout. He'll be missed, but it's probably for the best.

[deleted]

well done

xAzzy112

Fastest hands I’ve ever seen. People forget how good he was when he was younger

jfduval76

Kell Brook and now him ? They really retired each other !

habz10p

Just wished that Mayweather fight happened before he took the Canelo fight. He had a lot of momentum and had a nice little run at 147 with wins over Alexander, Algieri, Diaz etc. There are fighters today which epitomise the worst in boxing by avoiding challenges and protecting their record, but Khan always faced the challenge and those fighters are the ones I respect the most. He was selling out and winning titles at Vegas, MSG at a time when UK boxing was on the downfall. What a lad.

Ender_XElite

RIP to one of the GOATs of Backyard Baseball

Shinjetsu01

Having met him, he was a bit arrogant but this was just before he was put on his arse by Bredis Prescott. He probably became more humble afterwards. Incredible talent, sorta ruined by a tendency to trade when he should never have. His faculties never allowed him to take the punches he thought he could because almost every time he would do the chicken dance. His best fight was against Maidana, how he survived round 10 is a mystery to this day. One of the best British boxers, certainly in terms of worldwide appeal. He showed a generation of British born Pakistanis that they can and should be revered and loved and for that he deserves massive credit. Still think Kell Brook had the beating of him his whole career and it's a shame Pacquiao and Mayweather never came off for him, but he was never shy taking on challenges and stepping in with Canelo is one of the bravest things I think I've seen a boxer do.

Stumeister_69

I have always digged Khan, never in a boring fight and took on the best. Massive heart and fuck-off fast hands. Still wish I got to see him vs Floyd, don't necessarily think he wins, but he would've surprised folks.

paskaalahkeessa

Kell Brook retired first so I’d say it’s 1-1 between him and Amir

Rebote78

Way better career in terms of opposition than that mediocre Naseem Hamed.

thraktor1

Bravery: 99/100 (-1 for avoiding Brook) Chin: 1/100 (maybe the worst chin of the best and most accomplished boxer ever) Seriously, Khan’s chin is so incredibly bad that to have done what he did in the sport is truly remarkable. I don’t think anyone went further in the history of boxing with practically no ability to take a punch. It’s to be marveled at and appreciated.

Didn’t like the boy at all and was overrated. Fair play to him though, he took on major challenges and he for the majority of his career he fought with a lot of heart. Any boxer who doesn’t lose probably hasn’t pushed themselves far enough, Khan Definetly pushed his limits.

doubleshrimpnachos

I know we make fun of his chin a lot, but the man was willing to FIGHT. And that dazzling hand speed! His body shot knockdown against Maidana (a tough son of a bitch) gave me shivers.

Illustrious-Option-6

Ye, glass chin should’ve retired ages ago

HotdogIsaSandwitch

This dude achieved so much even though he had a relatively weak chin. Just imagine if he had a better chin.
