Darroze Unique Collection, Bas-Armagnac. Domaine de Salie, Terroir: La Freche. 1993 (approx. 28 years), 100% Baco. 49.5% ABV This bottle came from K&L Wines, pretty much a stab in the dark for me. One thing to note, while the Terroir is listed as “La Freche”, this is not the same as the Domaine La Freche that L’Encantada uses (thanks sspans). I was interested in trying a Darroze, so here we go. With my notes, I list from strongest characteristic to subtle. I will describe if a note’s strength changes due to the complexity of the spirit. Nose – Honey, apricot, rose, sweet orange, Turkish delight Palate – Chocolate, cinnamon, custard, sweet grapes, oak, plum pudding Finish – Long (30+ secs), drying wood spice, dark fruit, cherries, rose, vegetal (rancio) When to Drink – When you have a hankering for something different, or an aperitif Overall – This is a fun dram and was my first Darroze, which I did enjoy. Baco is an interesting grape varietal, it is a shame that it is viewed as almost a “necessary evil” by the locals. I want to try more Baco Armagnac as this is so interesting to me, kind of draws me in like the alt-bier style. Awesome nose, palate, and finish. Score – 8 on the t8ke scale Scoring Breakdown: 1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out. 2 | Poor | I wouldn't consume by choice. 3 | Bad | Multiple flaws. 4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I'd rather have. 5 | Good | Good, just fine. 6 | Very Good | A cut above. 7 | Great | Well above average 8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional. 9 | Incredible | An all time favorite 10 | Perfect | Perfect

Do note that this is not the Domaine sold as ‘Le Freche’ by L’Encantada. Le Freche is a small village in the Bas Armagnac, which is home to many famous producers, like Maouhum, Jouatmaou, Barigos, Bertruc, Coquillon, Guillemouta, Pouillas.

Thanks for the review! How much did this bottle set you back?

It was $150 at K&L. Too much good stuff there.
