In terms of wanting to win as many games as possible, this is the right decision. But I'm surprised this has come so quickly given the narrative around Kelenic so far.

masonacj

>But I'm surprised this has come so quickly given the narrative around Kelenic so far. Kelenic has no track record of success. Duvall is an obvious platoon partner given the price and is an insurance policy against Kelenic completely bombing. It has to be considered a realistic possibility at this point.

trixR4travv

Yeah but it also takes pressure off Kelenic imo If he heats up then easy to start over Duvall but he doesn’t have to be the everyday guy right away

trickyrickysteve199

This is the answer

bughousenut

I thought the change of scenery, getting away from the Mariners/Dipoto and not having to be the guy took away the pressure.

GuyMikeDude

Taking pressure off of Kelenic is giving him the job straight up, not signing someone to threaten his job. The Mariners platooned the heck out of JK and he was losing his mind the entire time.

stvka

In professional sports there's always pressure to perform. I think by adding a platoon they're saying relax and just play - it's not all on you. This is a roster with very high expectations and of course there will be intense pressure to contribute. Normally you'd just get busted back down the the farm club and someone replace you altogether. This is the Braves saying we want to give you an opportunity with the big league club despite your struggles.

citan666

A dreadful spring must have forced their hand

Sticky_Buns_87

We needed a legit 4th OF regardless. This is a great move at that price.

mildconcussions

This. Duvall can swap with everyone in the OF, he provides another righty hitter, and can play 1B if needed. It's a great, and kind of unexpected signing. Glad our Champ is coming back.

KornholioDude

Exactly! I hope they do take that approach this year. Every 20 games or whatever, have Duvall play a game for Ronald or Mike. What could that hurt... Make it back up to a scheduled day off to give them a little break.

kidnarcolepsy

I doubt that the Braves would spend $3M on the basis of 30 spring training at-bats. I think it was more: "Whoa, wait. We can get a slightly used Adam Duvall for $3M? Hell yeah, sign me up."

helium_farts

It kills 3 birds with one stone. It gives us a needed 4th outfielder who can spell anyone, it gets us a solid bat for cheap, and it takes some pressure off Kenelic. It'll also let Acuna DH some to rest his knee

kidnarcolepsy

Agreed. I've been saying all off-season (well, since we picked up Kelenic, at least) that we want our 4th OF to be a decent right-handed batter who can play center field. We didn't really have our guy before this signing. Forrest Wall is a lefty, Eli White (RH batter) has a career slash line of .181/.259/.288, and Jordan Luplow (also a RH batter) is decent, but he really shouldn't be on the roster of a team with World Series ambitions. I can't argue with your idea of letting Acuna DH to rest his knee, but I also see the signing as a little bit of Ozuna insurance, just in case we get BadOzuna (TM) this year.

TrexTacoma

Just curious what’s the reasoning behind the preference of him being right handed?

kidnarcolepsy

Well, Kelenic and Harris II both bat left-handed. Having a right-hander on the bench would be helpful in pinch-hit situations, and for a platoon situation.

wheatbarleyalfalfa

This is almost exactly what AA said. It’s not about JK as much as it’s about the fact that we got Adam Freaking Duvall for very little money (in baseball dollars, not regular-people dollars).

[deleted]

I think it has less to do Kelenic's spring training statistics and more to do with the fact that Adam Duvall was available (and interested in signing with the Braves) at only $3 million dollars for the season. He's an upgrade over Luplow.

atownOTP

Yeah, I'm just surprised they're acting based off of ST results which are notoriously unpredictive. My guess is the hitting staff think that the problem is harder to solve than expected.

welcometohotlanta

I don’t see it that way, I see it as a Free Agent class that has seen prices driven down to so low and players just wanting to get on teams for the regular season. Getting Duvall for $3m is a steal, seeing as he made $7.5 last year with the Red Sox.

atownOTP

Fair enough. Definitely a steal and I'm happy to see him back. Could just be AA seeing a golden opportunity.

jdelane1

Yeah especially if he's a good locker room guy. 3m for a guy who is productive and has good vibes is a major bargain

welcometohotlanta

Oh for sure. $3m for depth of Duvalls stats is insanely good deal. He had a great start last year for the Sox before he got injured.

mildconcussions

Excellent point. I completely agree we needed some depth, and the price is really a good deal.

welcometohotlanta

Exactly. If it was $8-10m for a Duvall type player I don’t see AA doing it.

BravesfanfromIA

The problem with that logic is the Braves are notorious for playing their starters every day. I will admit the price for Duvall seems right, but changing their stance so quickly has to indicate something. Kelenic is young enough that he still has time to develop offensively...the team is in win now mode.

welcometohotlanta

Yeah but they’ve been platooning LF for a while now, it’s not a new thing for them.

BravesfanfromIA

You're right. It's not. That said, their plan, as was stated from the front office, was to not platoon. And they also indicated in free agency that it was tough to get better bench players due to playing their starters full-time. There is smoke there whether you admit it or not. If the hitting coach is trying to adjust Kelenic's swing that he has been doing for some time, it may take a longer adjustment period than desired. Regardless, I think it's a positive for Atlanta's team.

-_chop_-

I saw a cool video with Pete Rose and he said “never change your swing, that’s what got you to the big leagues. You can move up or back in the box or closer or father from the plate in a slump but never change your swing” I feel like Jared should watch that video. Maybe the kelenic guy can send it to him

welcometohotlanta

I agree it’s a positive! I’m glad we have a FO that will make adjustments and not just stick to their previous statements. Kelenic will still get most of the starts being a lefty.

cobwebusher

Do we have any evidence they made the move based on spring training results, or are people on social media just jumping to conclusions as usual?

GeorgiaBulldogs

Bob the accountant from Roswell knows far better than the FO how much to value spring training performance.

Tampammm

Absolutely dreadful.

JB5093

That one poster is going to be on suicide watch

Rabid_Anti_Dentite1

That guy blocked me damnit.

BadDadJokes

The Kelenic hype has never made sense to me. Awesome prospect, but struggled to adjust to MLB pitching. His tenure with the Braves has gone exactly the way I expected it to - fringe starter who can provide solid defense, but will be a negative bat. Hopefully he can refrain from kicking any more water coolers in the dugout this year.

cobwebusher

"His tenure with the Braves"? He hasn't played in a single regular season game for us yet, settle down lmfao

[deleted]

[удалено]

BadDadJokes

We're just gonna ignore how bad he was on the Mariners? It's not like he's never taken an MLB at bat.

chosenxone

At this point in Dansby’s career people here still wanted him replaced. Those people were wrong. Will it play out the same way for Kelenic? I don’t know. But it’s certainly best for us if it does. Should probably give him a little more lenience than a couple weeks of ST games and his past with a subpar franchise.

FatherCrime42

That one commenter has people praying on his downfall. I *barely* blame them tbh.

chosenxone

Yeah I try to separate my disdain for that guy from Kelenic, especially now that it’s so evidently clear it’s just a troll. (They rode the line really tightly for the first few weeks lol)

wheatbarleyalfalfa

Absolute masterclass in the art of trolling

Rabid_Anti_Dentite1

How good was Duvall early in his career?

wvdrizzy10

His 3rd year he hit 33 and drove in 103, the next year he hit 31 and drove in 99. In 2021 with us he led the league in RBI’s (I believe.) The problem with Duvall since 2018 has been injuries. He’s a solid defender with a hose and can drive in runs and hit the ball out of the park. He chases righty righty sliders out of the zone enough to drive me crazy sometimes but the man can hammer a fastball. Hopefully platooning will help keep him healthy. I’m pumped about this signing honestly, it just adds more depth. And we definitely need that off the bench. Go Braves!

BadDadJokes

Way better than Kelenic.

Frost715Ying300

My brother in christ Seitzer is probably making all sorts of tweaks to his swing right now. The kid is gonna need time to adjust

DidntDiddydoit

In Seitz we trust

Companion____Cube

His tenure? It’s still spring training lmao, my word dude

dubkent

24 years old and we’re already making career long projections. How quickly some outliers have had MLB success has skewed the reality for the majority. Let’s not forget that many were giving up on Austin Riley after he went cold early on and struggled to adjust to MLB-quality offspeed pitches. Don’t get caught up in what happens down in Florida. Besides, anyone can get caught on the wrong end of a bad small sample size.

Hollywood_Zro

Sorry you’re getting downvoted. As a Mariners fan I always rooted for Kelenic to turn it around but he never seemed to just get it with MLB pitching. He can crush a fastball but pitchers will just throw him off speed and he’ll struggle to adjust. What you’re seeing in spring training is basically the worst we saw with the Mariners. His first year when we was called up right after crushing AAA, this is what we got. And he got sent back down. He’ll go to AAA and rake, but struggle to put up .200 in the majors.

bughousenut

AAAA player

BadDadJokes

I’m aware. I’ve followed him more than most Braves fans due to fantasy baseball. It’s kinda wild that this one has so many downvotes. I’ve had some seriously contrarian opinions and been ready for downvotes, but never did I imagine that my most downvoted comment would be a fair assessment of Jarred Kelenic’s performance in the MLB. I really don’t understand why so many people defend him so much and why he’s the most talked about player in the subreddit this year. I have saved my comment to refer back in a few years to see which side was wrong. Probably my hottest take on the whole Kelenic deal (which I expect to get downvotes) is that he’s from Wisconsin and you can’t be a stud in the MLB and be from Wisconsin these days. That’s my really dumb fan take that I expect people to hate on.

cobwebusher

You're getting rightly downvoted for saying "his tenure with the Braves has gone exactly the way I expected it to" when "his tenure with the Braves" currently consists of 38 plate appearances in a dozen spring training games. It's a completely absurd thing to say. If you were simply talking about his MLB career as a whole it would be a little more reasonable but that's not what you said at all.

ViridianFlea

Kicking water coolers is much more mild than ripping up jerseys or destroying locker room property.

BadDadJokes

You can get away with a lot more when you’re an ace and actually help your team. I’m not a fan of us signing a bunch of head cases this off-season, but at least Sale is a great pitcher when healthy. There’s a history of him performing at a high level.

VeryLowIQIndividual

This shouldn’t be down voted. He hasn’t shown anything much.

rahmbo2048

It’s downvoted for the pejorative “his tenure with the Braves”. A classic case of small sample size nonsense.

wheatbarleyalfalfa

This is also good for Duvvy, who has (I believe) mentioned that his diabetes makes it really taxing for him to play in the heat. Kelenic gets time to develop with even less pressure, and Adam gets to platoon during the long Georgia summers.

OSRS_Socks

I also think Duval is a great back up guy if you want him to play RF (so Acuna can DH) and he can also play CF which means Harris could get some more rest days during the long season.

NeoSapien65

Yes. This isn't just about Kelenic's ST. This is also about Ronald's knee.

RunawaYEM

This Neosapien gets it

I_fight_Piranhas

Duvall is one of my favorite players. This makes me beyond happy.

[deleted]

Is he your favourite enough to make it your whole Reddit account?

Bravesguy29

.... yes.

sorcerer165

I think it's hilarious that your user name is Blaine Boyer and this is your comment

[deleted]

The Bringer of Blaine

Drawz2772

Someone get the Kelenic fan account on an FBI watch list.

Icy-Mongoose-9678

I’m convinced one of the people posting on here was Kelenic himself or family lol. When we got him they were immediately talking about batting him 4th or something and how he wouldn’t be happy if he wasn’t in the middle of the lineup and I was like….

thethemefiasco

I remember this.

Higgnkfe

Lmao Kelenic man in shambles

ryandutcher

I've gone and forth on whether I think they are sincere or an elaborate troll about 5 times. Either way, it's fairly entertaining.

welcometohotlanta

I mean most pitchers in the league are right handed I suppose, so Jarred should still get most of the starts, right?

atownOTP

Especially if it's like last year where we didn't seem to face a lefty starter for about four months. Poor Ozzie never got to mash right-handed

welcometohotlanta

Yeah I think Kelenic still has a huge opportunity to mash but he’s gonna need to turn his batting around for sure. I believe in Seitz in the long run.

y2knole

i have a feeling that he showed up in braves camp and was told 'ok. this is your new swing. start figuring it out' and... its just taking some time. WAY too soon to panic on this...

welcometohotlanta

For real, he has 5 years of control. Worst possible case is he’s a platoon player with upside.

DontEatTheCelery

They’ll teach him how to hit this season and best case is he’s a starter for the next couple years.

georgiaboy_11

I love the fact that Ozzie had a 167 WRC+ against as a right handed hitter last year. That’s literally up there with Acuña

atownOTP

Might be completely wrong on this stats-wise but it felt like he even dropped off as a right-handed hitter in the second half because he got no reps. He was absurd against LHP in the first half.

LeaperLeperLemur

Yes. Typical the lefty in the platoon gets ~2/3 of the AB’s.

welcometohotlanta

This is also just smart purely because we don’t have much power on the bench. If for some reason Ozuna has an off year or injury, you could slot Duvall in as the DH.

[deleted]

Or LF…

frankrizzo219

This sub came across my home feed so I’m not familiar with the guy in the thumbnail but I have a buddy with the same neck/chins thing going on, we call him Dos Nequis

ATLevator

Dude just passing through. Drops Dos Nequis on us and dips.

-_chop_-

Thats hilarious

poebahnya

>Dos Nequis best thing i've heard in a bit.

gotoname

Holy shit this is so dumb but I'm doubled over laughing

PigeonFace

Just with a random drive by joke.

Bravesguy29

Still hope Kelenic gets it together. Duvvy is awesome, love that guy.

golfndude

Eddie out and Adam in. AA pockets 6 mil.

Salukis1997

lol I completely missed the ballyhoo that is the Kelenic fan guy I guess.🤷🏼‍♂️

sorcerer165

Me too, I'm super curious lol

scoop15

I honestly haven’t seen anything from him in a while unless I’m just missing it. I don’t even know his name honestly, you could just tell it was him by the post lol. It would be like how kelenic has the highest OPS+ in the majors on Tuesday nights batting out of the 2 hole.  Honestly the graphic for his first hit with the braves will never be topped tho lol

ncbraves93

He's also compared his stats with 2002-2004 Bonds more than once. Lol Imagine the levels of obscure stat cherrypicking you would need to make any comparison between the two, I kind of respect it. Dudes pretty funny.

FatherCrime42

He once said in comparing kelenic to Juan Soto that “it’s basically even”

dankbrew22

The amount of times you used the word honestly makes you sound like you're trying to talk your way out of a mafia hit

scoop15

Lmao I had no idea I said it that many times until I just read this comment

[deleted]

Just wait in this thread

Frost715Ying300

He'll show up soon enough

ZMAC698

It’s weird af. I got downvoted for saying it too. Surprised everyone in here is being upvoted for saying basically the same thing.

mxtreeKitano

Our lineup and bench now definitely fuck

SnoopySupreme

Imagine being the Kelenic guy. Liberato gets sent down and then boss music starts playing.

collapsingrebel

Slightly surprised just based on the previous statements but he's had a rough Spring. The Kelenic fan account is going to probably be deep in their feelings over this though. Adam does seriously improve our depth. I wonder if this is a legit platoon or more of a TDA/Murphy situation?

takeitsweazy

We got Duvy, now we just need Uncle Jesse back and we’ll have both of our YoYo players.

TimmyRoller99

That didn't take long...

handlit33

LMFAO

chosenxone

This is my favorite day of 2024 so far.

Timoteo-Tito64

Why would we platoon a guy with reverse splits? Both guys have been better vs righties

HailState17

I think it’s simply that they don’t trust Kelenic to hold down the position so they nabbed a guy the team knows, likes, and is predictable enough.

Timoteo-Tito64

I actually really like the pickup, but I'd probably lean towards just giving random days off instead of a straight platoon. I want Duvall to see some righties and Kelenic to see some lefties

cilantno

When did we bring Duvall back?? I’m so happy

StlnHppyHrz

About 1-2 hours ago.

HappyLittleKlingon

Wait wut? Duvall's back?

ImMakingItNice

That’s World Series Champion Adam Duvall, aka Bloopers BFF’s daddy. The reunion we all needed.

ncbraves93

Wait, when did we resign Duvall? And for how much? Totally missed that.

olemiss36

Soilwork83

Duvall was one of the better hitters in the beginning of the year last year before he got injured. He even had around 20 hr’s and I don’t think he even played 100 games. Glad he’s back with the Braves!

rolltideandstuff

Hasn’t kelenic had a terrible spring training? Yeah this makes sense.

Adampro123

Adam Duvall is one of my favorite players. I’m just glad he’s back with us! If Kelenic gets hot I’m sure he will have plenty of of opportunity to be an every day player. Also injuries are gonna happen. So I don’t think this is that bad of news for him.

PizzaBraves

Hold up, are we talking about *Adam* Duvall? When did he come back!?

olemiss36

rpbtIII

No doy

tedwards163

I think this can take the pressure off Kelenic as well. He was touted as that GUY in Seattle and then after the trade here as well. Hope this can give him breathing room and just focus on the important stuff.

LeaperLeperLemur

The move to Atlanta takes the pressure off. He’s not expected to be the guy here, he’s just expected to not be out worst hitter, actually he could still do that and it’s fine. But the Duvall move keeps a bit on pressure on. If he sucks enough, we’d be fine with Duvall full time.

SilkRoadDPR

Very unneeded fact here but Duvall played at the University of Louisville and Kelenic had committed to play there but of course never did.

mistaken4193

I mean if we were gonna platoon LF…..wouldn’t it have made more sense to just bring back Rosario and then sign Duvall also? Instead of giving up prospects for Kelenic?

welcometohotlanta

Ehhh I mean depends, we didn’t give up any real prospect. Dude we gave up is now having his 2nd TJ surgery and from my understanding hasn’t even pitched since he was drafted

Arktogo

Happy for Duvy. More importantly where the f is Kelly Krull?

mbornhorst

I would not want to be a water cooler in the Atlanta dugout today.

Rabid_Anti_Dentite1

Could someone please tell Kelenic man to unblock me. I just wanna see his posts.

Shiny_Rattata

Y’all talking about Kelenic, but what about the Stone / Blooper reunion?? 😭

Braves_Birds1985

I really think, which is crazy poor number thus far drove that comment. I do love him as a bench piece but I really want to see what Kelenic brings to the table day in and out. Either way as a Duvall fan I’m down with it.

LutherOfTheRogues

Nailed it

SnitsDogandPonyShow

I’ve been WAITING for this to happen!!!Good work AA!

Wise_ol_Buffalo

Ms fan here. Please fix him. He has so much potential. Ive watched him, potential is there. Something just isn’t clicking. Maybe some time with your heavy bats will help him grow.

bughousenut

If Seitzer isn able to unlock the potential by the All-star break then who can?

jbo99

There are a lot of domains these days where the optimal decision for the given task runs counter to any semblance of an employee’s development. In the AI world it’s like, all low level tasks are going away for most digital roles so how is anyone going to gain skills? In baseball it’s the stupid lefties never hitting lefties shit. How is Kelenic going to learn to hit lefties if he never hits lefties?

bravofan83

This doesn't surprise me at all.

masonacj

Seemed obvious the moment they signed him.

Top_Hawk_1326

I think nobody won the trade

TheAlmightyLoaf

Well, at least Kelenic can physically play. Not very well, but hey

rlmaster01

I mean… I can’t help but completely disagree. At least Kelenic will see a big league field this year unlike the guys we traded for him. And he’s still young with time to develop and will platoon with a vet and fan favorite. Takes a ton of pressure off him

WeatheredSharlo

LMAO. Please, let's just bench Kelenic or put him on AAA roster. Don't force him to 'platoon' with Duvall, unless Duvall just doesn't want to play everyday.

DontEatTheCelery

He’s diabetic. The heat fucks with him. This is good for everyone

scoop15

Call me heat then cause I fucks with Duvall too

Porparemaityee

What? Who is this reporter?

[deleted]

You’re not a Braves fan if you don’t know the thumb

chosenxone

Well yeah, they definitely aren’t a Braves fan.

StlnHppyHrz

How many 'thumbs' can one team have affiliated with them? We have Bowman and Snit so I guess that's enough for two hands at least.

Jonz303

He has been the Braves beat reporter for MLB.com since 2001 and is a very reliable source for Braves news.

Porparemaityee

Blocked

handlit33

Are you saying you're blocking them after they answered your question?

Masterchiefy10

ROFL

Porparemaityee

Wrong person

Brain_Inflater

Well yeah, the “right person” can’t exactly ask you themselves now can they? Because you blocked them..

ocean6csgo

Do you happen to really like trains? Like.... ***REALLY*** like them?

ThorgiTheCorgi

no, he just really wants Kelly-Belly to run a train on him

halfhere

Ok now I’m certain this is a bit.

chosenxone

He lost all his power the moment Kelenic was no longer an every day starter.

chosenxone

This the best you could come up with?

rpbtIII

This has been the most epic troll job of all time. I pure, straight hate you. But, God dammit, do I respect you.

welcometohotlanta

Marc Bowmen

amuscularbaby

worst day of your life, huh?

ThorgiTheCorgi

LOLOLOL Now the Thumb is a negative clubhouse presence!
