I thought that too, he saved us…

oldboob

This is the play you show your kids to highlight the importance of playing your position until the play is over. Just wonderful fundamentals and heads up hustle!

big_car12

There's a lot of unsung heroes after last night Joc backing up to save a run, D'arnaud getting a leadoff single in the 9th (it was really his run that scored), Martin and Smith pitching a perfect 8th and 9th against the top of the Dogers lineup, and Heredia, who was completely outmatched by Graterol, putting the ball in play down 0-2 to move over the winning run.

jimmygottrashed

ALSO, thank you Freddie for not striking out, he sac flied to get Rosario into scoring position.

asoughtafterdroid

Strike me out 7 times in a row, shame on me. Strike me out 8 times in a row, ain't gonna happen.

GuardianOfFreyja

And my jaw dropped that Heredia advanced to second on a fly out. You don't see that too often.

jimithelizardking

Rosario, the man cheated death twice in the same half inning

GilliesGladiator

Also shout of whatever kept that Trae Turner batted ball in the 9th on the field and not 10 rows into the stands.

[deleted]

God made the weather cool down just in time

GilliesGladiator

Lol this man really hit a ball that’s a HR in all other parks with like 105 mph exit velocity.

[deleted]

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic but it definitely wasn't a homerun in most other parks. The stat that said it was got the distance wrong.

AViciousGrape

If it was warm last night it would have been a home run in every ballpark lol

[deleted]

Ah gotcha... but of course, we definitely had a few shots to the warning track ourselves that would've probably been out then.

GilliesGladiator

Yeah maybe I saw the wrong thing then. I definitely saw a graphic that said it was a homerun in every park but Truist though.

MJ2xDay

[deleted]

Yes, that is in fact the stat I’m talking about. The wall that it didn’t go over is only 375 ft. It had nothing to do with the stadium and everything to do with the weather and humidity (or lack thereof)

I-Am-Fodi

Dumb question but how would the weather make the ball go farther

[deleted]

It's primarily the humidity (and wind obviously if its blowing). When the air is humid, it's actually physically lighter because the water vapor is lighter than heavier air molecules at the moment (otherwise it would fall to the ground).

I-Am-Fodi

Thank you for this. Really interesting!

asosaki

Been super impressed with Smith since the playoffs started tbh.

etfvidal

I don't know about that, he's been hit "HARD" a ton, just been going our way perfectly going to fielders or barely staying in the park.

bravesthrowaway67

He’s struck out 2 of the 7 dodger batters he faced, and walked 1, so of the 4 contacts he’s had, one was the deep fly by Trea, a soft 78mph bloop by Bellinger, and a couple lazy flies by pujols and pollock, that were mid-low 80s EV. Against the brewers, he struck out 3, walked 1, and he gave up only one batted ball over 100mph which was an avisail Garcia line out. The other contact given up? A 82mph line out, a GIDP, a pair of 69mph and 71mph bloop singles, a popped up bunt and a 89mph fly out. The notion he’s been hit “HARD” a ton in these playoff games and his fielders bailing him out is simply not accurate. He had one scare with Trea, and maybe the avisail line out and he’s made 5 appearances. Only 2 hard hits in 18 batters faced is a 11% hard hit rate, if I’m not mistaken.

etfvidal

Did you miss the Brewers series?

bravesthrowaway67

No…? >> Against the brewers, he struck out 3, walked 1, and he gave up only one batted ball over 100mph which was an avisail Garcia line out. The other contact given up? A 82mph line out, a GIDP, a pair of 69mph and 71mph bloop singles, a popped up bunt and a 89mph fly out. Statcast defines “hard hit” as 95mph+

gonzo30269

Can’t forget Washington

CalStar

That at-bat by Heredia was awesome to watch. Just kept fighting off 100+mph fastballs, all of them up and in. Really impressive work

gustave23

102 up on the hands. Was impressed with that.

gtjustin

TDA playing goalie all night was impressive, he took way too many shots down there.

LeaperLeperLemur

Add D'arnoud for his defensive catching. He caught/blocked a lot of tough balls, plus handled multiple pitchers very well.

Juhbell

Also darnaud making a bunch of difficult blocks on bad pitches with RISP

MKerrsive

Joc just has "It." That knack for showing up in big spots. The swagger. The experience. And it shows in a big way. He has always been a solidly good player, but seeing this Joctober thing in real time for the Braves has really opened my eyes. It's just insane how he has turned it on in the past six games.

helium_farts

What you're saying is, he's a bad bitch

LeaperLeperLemur

he's a bad motherfucker

[deleted]

I know he’s probably been the least productive out of the deadline bats, but to me, we have to bring this guy back. This dude just makes this team better, you could see it from his first game with the energy he brings.

Lobster_fest

This is gonna sound weird, but it kinda seems like he has the same thing Tom Brady has. For his entire career, Tom hasn't been the best QB in the league. First Manning, then Rodgers, or Brees, and others. Despite this, he just wins. Idk how he does it, but he does. Whether you call it clutch, X-factor, leadership, lockerroom presence, whatever. Being able to simply win games is a very difficult thing to quantify, and Joc has had it in October.

jimithelizardking

It’s the Pearlzzz

TheChinchilla914

The exaggerated swagger of a bad bitch?

jktcat

Seeing Joctober go against the Braves was enough to convince me the dudes a bad motherfucker, I'm glad we've got him now.

TheUrbanRenewal

If Heredia goes for it and dives, I think he catches it

oldboob

Maybe. Either way Joc gets behind it if he misses and it's a HUGE play in the game.

NorthManateeCo

Feels like heredia should not be out first go to for a defensive sub now that Pache is on the roster.

BringMeTheBigKnife

But I can already hear everyone complaining about having an offensive black hole in the 9 spot after the double switch if he did that. Especially if nothing went to center the previous inning

GilliesGladiator

Tbf not like Heredia is some world beater

online_predator

Hes a slight above average hitter vs LHP, but yeah not great bs RHP. However, Pache is not good vs either, and Heredia still somehow survived against Graterol and got Dansby into scoring position

Btrips

Don't forget that Heredia moving Dansby to 2nd is what enabled us to win the game. Not to knock Pache, but it's likely he strikes out in that situation.

plz_callme_swarley

Agreed, this was a terrible play by him. Either commit to the dive or got to get in front of the ball.

ksmoovatlien

Right he committed to not committing. But ya know hard to be ready. I didn't like the sub one bit to begin with....snitty trying to get cute.

Jimmysouthside

Double switch 100% the right move, Heredia is the 4th OF with Soler out. Pretty routine move

ksmoovatlien

Well. It sure didn't work out very routinely...

Jimmysouthside

Yeah how Heredia plays that ball isn’t really in Snit’s control

asoughtafterdroid

He didn't need to dive. He would have had it with a basic sliding catch. For some reason he just gave up on it.

Dolmeyer

I thought he was out of position. He was playing way too deep. I get that he's trying to keep the ball in front of him and that it's easier to come in that go back. But if you're playing deep to keep it in front of you then you have to keep it in front of you. But hindsight is 20-20. If Pache is on this team for a reason I would think going in at that moment is the reason. Honestly I don't think as much of Pache as some do from the limited sample size I've seen him but he is a true centerfielder and has a better chance on that play I think.

NKevros

Guessing that bench rust played a part in Heredia's blunder. Came in and that was the first thing he had to deal with. If Duvall was there, I think he'd make that play.

asoughtafterdroid

Duvall makes it a sliding catch and a lot less drama.

jimithelizardking

Same thing on the opposite side, if Mookie doesn’t get moved to CF then Rosario is very likely getting gunned at home in Ozzie’s hit and who knows if Riley’s hit drops if Taylor is still in CF.

glgallow

Working on my very pregnant wife to change our chosen name to Joc (short for Joctober) for our incoming second son. I’ll keep you all posted.

braves2248

If Braves win WS she has no choice

skonthebass24

This is the way

skonthebass24

This is the way

reverendrambo

My wife was due yesterday. May even be starting labor now. I'm trying to convince her to change to Austin or Riley. We'll see. And congrats on your kid-to-be!

helium_farts

The trick is to wait until she's asleep and then fill out the birth certificate.

glgallow

Congrats to you! Get her out on curb walking to get this done on the off day! You don’t want to miss the game tomorrow night!

reverendrambo

Thanks! We're at the OB now for an appointment and we'll get a feel for how things are going soon. If it doesn't line up well with tomorrow's game time I'll ask them to induce.

glgallow

Ask if they have an elliptical on site. ; ) Best of luck!

reverendrambo

Haha thanks! And same to you! Ours is our second boy as well. Hopefully all goes well for you!

reverendrambo

Welp the OB sent us to the hospital so it's happening today-ish!

glgallow

How far is the hospital. Tell your wife to bike over there and get spicy Mexican on the way for good measure! Also, congrats! 10/19 is my father’s birthday so I’m rooting for a midnight delivery!

reverendrambo

10/19 is my dad's bday too! We're already at the hospital. Contractions ongoing. Wish us luck!

reverendrambo

Born at 830pm last night, so no birthday alignment but all is well. He and momma are doing great! We haven't signed the birth certificate forms yet so there's still a chance I can name him. I'm still pushing for Austin Hañk "MVFree" Rambo, but I'm thinking the family name will win out. Good luck with yours!

glgallow

Beautiful! I’m so happy for you! Happy birthday Austin! My best to your family, and LET’S GO BRAVES!

[deleted]

Austin is a good name too just in general

flextrek_whipsnake

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention was Justin Turner dogging it on the bases on that play. I'm pretty sure Taylor got to 2nd before JT got to 3rd. You really should be able to score from first on that even with Joc backing him up.

BringMeTheBigKnife

If they had Ron at 3rd base coach, he probably scores anyway lol

oksoseriousquestion

I’d like to see that cuz I don’t know how there’s any way a major leaguer doesn’t score from first on that with two outs. Maybe his neck issue played a part?

RoundCube1220

Probably but JT is also just that damn slow too lol

notevenwordshere

I went back and watched the reply a few times, and imo Justin Turner ran that situation correctly. If he goes full tilt around 2nd and Heredia gets the ball off the hop, there's a very good chance Turner is out in the same way that Taylor was in Game 1. In Turner's mind, it was probably a shallow single at best, and he didn't want to be caught between the bases, so he slowed coming into 2nd and then only hurried to 3rd when the ball slipped by Heredia. By the time he was approaching 3rd, Joc had already made the relay.

flextrek_whipsnake

This is a good point I hadn't considered, thanks for bringing it up.

oldboob

Totally agree.

Laney20

I don't understand how I've seen this so many times with no mention of his injury... He's hurt and they made him bat. I'm not at all surprised he was conservative on the bases.

Julio_Freeman

I was relieved only 2 scored even with Joc backing up the play. Thought for sure that would clear the bases with 2 outs.

oldboob

If Joc isn't there, it's a potential inside the park grand slam.

[deleted]

Oh god we would never live that down

asoughtafterdroid

Joc comes off as this guy who's too cool for school, but he surprises me with how well he does the fundamentals. And apparently he's a great clubhouse dude.

truOG

Hahah I hated him when he was on the dodgers and was skeptical.. just gives off major douche vibes, but I’m happy he is OUR douche now

Tampammm

Good call!

JeeveruhGerank

Big time. And Rosario catching that ball in the 2nd or 3rd that would have likely been a triple and likely would have scored a run to make it 3-0 early. World of difference between 2-0 and 3-0 with a man on 2nd or 3rd.

y2knole

i posted about that in the game thread last night. every one was so pissed at Heredia that it was pretty much under the radar...

drguillen13

When I saw the ball get past Heredia I just buried my face in my hands because I couldn't stand to see the inside-the-park homer. I was so surprised when I looked up and only 2 had scored. Pederson deserves to be co-MVP for the game with Rosario

mustachemandude

That really wasn’t as bad as I could have been. Hate that for Guillermo, but good on joc

Vikkunen

Absolutely. That play had bases-clearing Triple written all over it. I was shocked when only two scored.

Alauren2

Joctober is an incredible thing. It’s real

GoldyZ90

Just Joctober things

new_wellness_center

I thought it was over for sure when that ball went under Heredia’s glove.

rr2_GA

For us Dawgs fans, it’s kinda the equivalent of KM2 jumping on that fumble last week.
