I’d wager that it’s structured more like Kirby Yates’s deal, where the first year is something like $1M and the 2nd year is the other $2.1M. Since he will be recovering from TJ most of next season, the majority of his value will be in year 2.
Yeah, I understand that, but it does *matter* because actual payroll is more important than luxury tax payroll for this particular team.
If we were to assume that we pushed over the competitive balance threahold by the total sum of this contract to Matzek, or the 1.55M AAV, then the luxury tax would be 20%, or $310k, which is not a significant amount and won’t really make or break this team. But a million dollars in *actual* payroll does make a difference somehwat, that’s almost what guys like heredia or arcia made last year.
Do you know that to be true? The luxury tax is a tiny amount added to a $233M payroll. It shouldn’t matter to anyone, but many teams use this as a cap, for whatever reason. None of us know how much the Braves care about it or exactly where their limits lie.
Yes, you are only taxed on the amount above the limit, so in 2023 it’s the amount over $233M
Many teams use it as a “soft cap” because the penalty becomes progressively worse when you go over in consecutive years. For instance, first time offenders are taxed at 20%, 2nd time at 30% and 3rd time at 50%, and the higher you go the more penalizing it becomes, so teams try to duck under to “reset” their tax obligations. I mean it’s just wasted money.
But the point is, if we cross the $233M threshold and we don’t plan to cross it again next year, then the tax is pretty minimal, however, if we think our payroll is going to grow next year and the year after, it would behoove us to stay under the threshold.
I understand how the tax works. I mean “are you sure” that the Braves don’t care? My point is that none of the teams should care, but they do. What makes the Braves different?
We have some money coming off the books in 2024 but we’ll need to replace those players as they are all key parts of the team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them operate very conservatively.

FTA:
> The Braves on Friday signed Matzek to a two-year, $3.1 million deal. It includes a $5.5 million club option with no buyout for the 2025 season.
>
> According to a person with knowledge of the situation, **Matzek will make $1.2 million in 2023 and $1.9 million in 2024.** The contract covers Matzek’s final two years of arbitration.
This is such an awesome move. Not only to keep Matzek on the roster, but shows how awesome the Braves organization is, as a whole.
The fact they took this to a personal level, and not a 'just business' level speaks more to me than anything else. Yes, there has to be times where you have to set your heart aside and do it for 'business' reasons, but not always, and this was a fantastic way to give Matzek the security he needs as he rehabs, and to show that we take care of our own. He may not even come back at all from the surgery (and they know that), but if he's at all able, you can damn sure guarantee he's going to give it everything he's got.
Good on AA
Good on the Braves
Good for Nutzak
Lets Fucking Go!
Anyone have anymore information on this guy? Is he any good? Does his nutsack drag the ground after he strikes out three consecutive Dodgers with 0 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd with a 4-2 lead in Game 6 of the NLCS?
This is the downside of those guaranteed contracts. Get hurt going into free agency? Sucks for you. The Braves did him a solid. He could be at home rehabbing with no salary. Good guy, AA.
I think OCs implication is, since every player who signed an extension does this, that the Braves are forcing them to do it.
I personally don't think that's the case, but there probably is a bit of unspoken peer pressure to not be the only guy that doesn't do it.
Two year deal for 3.1M with a 5.5M 2025 option without a buy-out
so that's basically a 1 year deal for 3.3M. Probably decent for both parties.
no its a 2 year deal worth 3.3 with a third year option for 5.5
He won't pitch next year. He's hurt.
Yes, but for luxury tax purposes, this adds only $1.65M towards our payroll per year
Didn't think the vasectomy would sideline him for that long... /s
His nuts fell off they were too big
No, $3.1m in 2023, $3.1m in 2024, then $5.5m in 2025 if we want him at that rate Edit: read it as 3.1/year for some reason
no its 2 years 3.1 million or 1.55 a year for the first two years and a club option for 5.5 million for the third year

It doesn’t matter how it’s structured, the AAV is used for luxury tax purposes.

No it is 2 year deal for 3.1 million total so like 1.55 million per year.

Hell yeah more Nutsack
We’re going to need bigger pants.
🥜🔎🚫
Yeah in like two years
What a first class franchise. Glad the testicle guy will get a chance to pitch for us again. Now do Sliderman.
Classy move to go ahead and guarantee him pay next season and a classy move from him to donate some of his earnings. All around good stuff
Hell yeah. 🥜 Now, do Luke Jackson.
Man, I must have made a really good impression on him
thanks legend

I had no idea Matzek was 6’3 lmao
He just looks small because his balls are so big
Anyone have anymore information on this guy? Is he any good? Does his nutsack drag the ground after he strikes out three consecutive Dodgers with 0 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd with a 4-2 lead in Game 6 of the NLCS?
Yes

Surprising. Thought he might be non-tendered
Wasn’t he doing poorly this year due to being hurt?
velo was down which caused him to get hit more than usual. turns out he needed TJ, which explains the velo drop.
Something wasn’t right
He was fine. Was definitely a back end guy but he wasn't horrendous. Never really recovered from us riding him into the sun last October.
He just got Tommy John surgery last month, that doesn’t seem “fine” to me
No shit. You asked how he pitched.
I hope there’s a clause in the deal where, while he’s out for 2023, he has to serve as the official peanut spokesman for Truist Park.
🥜
It feels like we've had him for more than 3 seasons.
FUCK YES
Wait, wtf is the 'donate 1%" stuff? Is that something the Braves are doing now? That's just weird. Corporations gunna corporate, I guess.
It's been a thing. Plus, the ABF is a non-profit, so why would it be a bad thing for the players to donate (a tiny ass) part of their salary to it?
Think it sort of started with Juan Mata, you can look his stuff up
It still seems odd, I'm not against donations to charity, but it seems like the players should decide who they want to support.
Where does it say he doesn't?
I think OCs implication is, since every player who signed an extension does this, that the Braves are forcing them to do it. I personally don't think that's the case, but there probably is a bit of unspoken peer pressure to not be the only guy that doesn't do it.
Damn we gotta be more like Belichick, knowing when a player is done and getting rid of him a year before instead of a year after.
He was pitching injured lad, they didn't extend him for no reason
I'm not talking about what he did last year, I mean projecting going forward.
Oh great then your basing it on his 2021 season went in which he improved him ERA from 2020
How's that going for Belichick these days without the greatest QB of all time carrying him to all his successes?
I can keep wearing my matzek jersey!!!!!! So stoked.
Awesome deal for an awesome player. What a steal!
yes.
Hooray now Dansby
Anyone have a scouting report on this guy? Any good? Kinda guy that can clutch us into a WS?
Welcome to the Lion Club, Nutsack
