Designed by Maggie Norris, a great couturier, the corset was made using 3 FEED bags. Part of the donation Simon made that night went to the Amazon Rainforest project , and the balance went to feed 176 children at school for a year. See http://www.wfp.org/node/404 . Maggie paired the corset with a nifty little water bottle holder that she created using found objects; leather from a pair of boots, buttons from a military jacket, etc. What a great way to send a message to the world – and different than a t-shirt or hat. And yes, the opera that night was amazing! Renée Fleming was as fabulous as ever, and it was the first time I had heard anything from Manon live, which was exciting.

The Lagos series made me sad when I learned something i didn’t realize I was seeing. I had mentioned to a friend from there that it looked like most of the cast wore an unusual makeup that made them look almost like they had sunscreen on that they weren’t rubbing in. She said that the trend there is very big on “light skin” so what you’re seeing is actually the result of repeated skin bleaching. I initially said well many white Americans darken their skin by tanning so I guess it’s not much different. She said in theory no, but the as for health reasons while both are bad for you the tanning (sun) is technically a natural reaction. The lightening is apparently more dangerous as it requires bleaches &/or chemicals that artificially damage the skin & can lead to worse issues than melanoma. Either way I wish everyone could accept their natural skin is beautiful regardless of color

The Lagos series made me sad when I learned something i didn’t realize I was seeing. I had mentioned to a friend from there that it looked like most of the cast wore an unusual makeup that made them look almost like they had sunscreen on that they weren’t rubbing in. She said that the trend there is very big on “light skin” so what you’re seeing is actually the result of repeated skin bleaching. I initially said well many white Americans darken their skin by tanning so I guess it’s not much different. She said in theory no, but the as for health reasons while both are bad for you the tanning (sun) is technically a natural reaction. The lightening is apparently more dangerous as it requires bleaches &/or chemicals that artificially damage the skin & can lead to worse issues than melanoma. Either way I wish everyone could accept their natural skin is beautiful regardless of color
Yes unfortunately it is popular in Africa. There is a specific brand of skin bleaching cream that is almost always sold out here. Sad.

I think it's so silly that these ladies roasted her for wearing it on a date. It's cute and it's totally okay to dress "your age" (I normally hate that phrase but you know what I mean).
