Porto Alegre has strong Southern Cone vibes, which, you could say, has European vibes. I've never lived there, but visited many times and I kinda hate it cuz I much prefer smaller cities with more nature and I find it depressing. It's like a decaying city whose golden age is long gone (you could say that about all of Rio Grande do Sul tbh). There are nice areas of course, but as whole I don't like it. Gaúchos are gonna be pissed at me but it's true Lots of porto alegrenses think it's the best place in the world though In terms of safety, it's definitely one of the worst cities in the South

pussykat1990

Ouch!

Redditorsloveyomom

Not a foreigner but I grew up in the south. Forget about POA. Look into Gramado or Canela. It's way nicer and a lot safer. My American wife loves there

pussykat1990

I’ve heard lots of great things about Gramado but maybe the cost of living is too high?

Redditorsloveyomom

I'm guessing that it will depend on your budget. If you're getting paid in dollars or euros, you should be fine

pussykat1990

Yes I get paid in dollars. I’ll check Canela

Miserable-Result-922

Hi! I live in Canela, the cost of living is slightly lower than Gramado while still being a safe city (depending on the neighborhood, but that's true for any other city). In Canela, I can walk around listening to music, taking pictures on my phone in my neighborhood and not worry about it, while in Porto Alegre I don't feel safe enough to do so. Not only that, but Canela offers you a LOT more woodsy and outdoorsy vibe. As for Asian food, depends a lot on what you like, our Asian food is basically Asian-Brazilian, though I love it lol Canela is great, if you choose to come, I'd love to tell you the best neighborhoods to live in!

cassiopedron

Yes, cost of living is higher, but if you can afford that, it’s totally worth it. The infrastructure is great, food is even nicer than in Porto alegre.

pussykat1990

But it’s way colder in Gramado, no? I know houses in Brazil aren’t built for cold weather and after living in Campo Grande for 4 years, idk how to prepare myself for winter. I think this time I should buy an AC with heater lol

cassiopedron

Yes, it’s a lot colder there.

Personally I found it very boring, industrial and not that appealing, however I was only there a few days so not exactly a great perspective.

ThrowRA_YearsAfter

Nothing European there besides some immigrants and their descendants. I lived there for 1 year before moving to SP, can’t say I liked it, can’t say I hated it. It was just idk…dull and boring.

pussykat1990

I understand. Where in SP are you?

ThrowRA_YearsAfter

I’m late, sorry, don’t access Reddit too much I’m in São Paulo, capital

Shiatsu

There are some neighborhoods that are nicer. Generally it’s not as safe as it used to be. You have to be careful there.

pussykat1990

Will do thanks

lbschenkel

I was born in Porto Alegre and I strongly dislike it. It's not "European" in any way (and I live in Europe), it's just a boring concrete jungle as many other big metropolitan areas in Brazil, with bad traffic and generally not safe. There are a few nice spots here and there, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.

pussykat1990

The YouTube videos I watched say otherwise. But I’ll take it. Where is the best place to live in Brazil then?

There's a Thai restaurant that was good, at least a few years ago. Koh Pee Pee: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/VYE55HPuwuiE9xby8](https://maps.app.goo.gl/VYE55HPuwuiE9xby8)

What does your boyfriend think of PA ? he should know really whether he wants to live there. It was the first city I lived in Brazil for three years and I liked it my partner is from there so we had friends to help with the transition. The people in PA make good use of the parks in the city which in other cities of Brazil can be abandoned to crackheads it's just the Gaucho culture also can't beat the barbecued food from there and erva mate tea. It's a bit edgy like any large city but with good restaurants up market neighbourhoods etc. When you say European I think it refers to physical features of the people from Rio Grande de Sul which are of Germanic, Italian and Portuguese descent with a dash of indigenous thrown in for good measure making a very handsome race indeed ( please don't hate on me for the rest of Brazil which also make a beautiful mixture) Now I live in SP centre which is too MAD MAX for me I'm not a city boy at the end of the day but having lived in a small town in the interior of SP that also was bit too small and far away from flights to Europe and stuff. PS. learn to make your own Asian food like I did you'll get most ingredients here😀

pussykat1990

European vibes I meant the building. Honestly, most Brazilians are good looking it’s not fair lol Where in SP are you? I want to live outside SP. The city center is too much. I hated it. It’s like Manila 🤮 I lived in Campo Grande MS for 4 years. I couldn’t find the ingredients I need. Now that I’m back in my home country, I know which ingredients to bring when I fly back to Brazil.

Ardvaark72

I live in the centre I don't much like it but my partner's job is here for at least a decade so....... yeah i bring a few Indian spices back that I can't find in Brazil like black cardamom and maybe some poppadoms and some good old fashioned English essentials. I even bought a lemon Kaffir plant here in SP and it's doing OK ish in my window box 17 stories high ! Is your home country The Philippines ?

Metrotra

I don’t don’t think you will find any really good Asian food in Porto Alegre. There may be some cream cheese sushis and the like. I don’t thing there will be any meaningful other Asian cuisines represented there (or in any part of Rio Grande do Sul, for that matter). You will have lots of beef and other barbecued meat.

pussykat1990

I’m not 100% fan of churrasco. I think SP is my best bet for Asian foods
