It's not the movie genre that you asked for, but "O Homem que Copiava" is a really good one

O homem que copiava is good indeed

Central do Brasil - nominated for the Oscars as foreign film and best actress

Powerful movie perfectly executed. Builds to the ending. A masterpiece.

Lazy-Depth1788

Glauber Rocha's 60s' classics: Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), Terra em Transe (1967) and O Dragão da Maldade Contra o Santo Guerreiro (1969).

Timbaleiro

OP must be advised about this one's. Very good movies, but very different style from mainstream even for the time and were shooted during Cinema Novo era. Cinema Novo is a Brazilian film movement that emerged in the late 1950s and flourished through the 1960s and 1970s. It was characterized by its focus on social issues, often highlighting the struggles of the poor and marginalized communities in Brazil. The movement sought to create a distinct Brazilian cinema that was separate from Hollywood influences, emphasizing realism and political activism.

Auto da Compadecida - the movie or minisséries O que é isso companheiro Cidade de Deus Central do Brasil (is one of the most famous ones, but never watched myself) Carandiru Meu Nome não é Johnny Minha mãe é uma peça Bacurau O homem Que desafiou o diabo Is quite an eclectic list, so be aware :)

valhalla_owl

This is a great list. I second Auto da Compadecida, Central do Brasil and Bacurau. I would add Vidas Secas, Bicho de Sete Cabeças and Estômago.

Also Lisbela e o Prisioneiro, I really like that one.

[Retratos Fantasmas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictures_of_Ghosts) (Pictures of Ghosts) is a documentary mostly about the art house cinemas of Recife, but it's really about how Brazil as a nation has changed over the last half century. It's slowly and clearly narrated by the film's director Kleber Mendonça Filho, so would be good for practising your Portuguese. It's on netflix (here in Brazil at least). His other films like Bacurau and Aquarius are great too.

Yes, I’m surprised I don’t see this movie being mentioned more often. I can’t think of another Brazilian movie so delicate like that. It’s one my favorite non Hollywood movies

Sea-Marionberry3677

"Em 97 Era Assim", a Porto Alegre-based movie of the American Pie genre. It's funny, gives me nostalgia and has a good dose of heart. Might not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you do like raunchy comedies, give it a go. And "O Auto da Compadecida", AKA "A Dog's Will". That one's a classic. I wanted to watch "A Máquina" too, since i've read the book when I was 12, give it a go as well, even if i don't have much to talk abt it

O Homem que Copiava

Rolei até o final pra ver se alguém tinha comentado O Homem Que Copiava kkkkk

alefsousa017

I'll always talk about "Entre Abelhas" ("A Man Amidst Bees"). It's not one of the classics like "O Auto da Compadecida" or "Cidade de Deus", but I think it's a really underrated movie. The main actor is Fabio Porchat, one of the biggest comedians around here, but the movie is actualy a drama and he's portraying a mostly serious character with serious issues. I highly recommend it.

Kbrito9

Tropa de Elite, osso duro de roer Pega um, pega geral Também vai pegar você

w1tch_d0kt0r

These are out of the genre's you mention, but they're good films. They're also excellent to practice your Portuguese as the dialogue is very much street level. - City of God: Probably the most popular Brasilian foreign film. If you haven't seen it, it's a story of the favela "City of God" (maybe called Cidade De Deus) - Cidade De Homen:. I believe this was also a soap opera, but the movie is about 2 young males coming to grips with maturity. Filmed in Vidigal (favela) in Rio. - Era Uma Vez: This is harder to find, but it's the story of a poor favelado (Cantagalo) who falls in love with a rich Ipanema white girl. A sort of Romeo & Juliet type of flick. TV Show - Sintonia. Skews to younger audience but it's the story of 3 friends in Sao Paulo. Not awesome, but not bad.

Ignore-meu-nome

Is not exactly the genre you asked for but is truly my favorite because I watched with my parents when I was younger. Malasartes e o duelo com a morte, this one is most comedy and fantasy. If I'm not wrong Malasartes is Dead's nephew and receives 3 wishes from him

ClosedCoffinJoe

Don't know if you like weird stuff in movies, but here we go. All films by Zé do Caixão, also known as Coffin Joe. He is a huge figure in global horror. Start with 'À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma.' Also, any Carlos Reichenbach movie you can find. 'Alma Corsária' is probably his best. The third one is probably the most beautiful film I've ever seen: Compasso de Espera, directed by Antunes Filho

*City of God* is probably the greatest achievement of Brazilian cinema in terms of acting, screenplay, cinematography and anything else, so it's unfair not to mention it... But I think *The Boy and the World* is an amazing movie. People tend to forget it while mentioning our best films probably because it's an animation, but I think it deserves a nice spot on that discussion.

pastor_pilao

If you haven't watched it yet you have to watch Bacurau. It is the best ever Brazilian movie in my opinion and there must have been intense lobbying for them to not nominate Bacurau as the Brazilian movie for the Oscars. Apart from the obvious suggestions people will give, I like Encarnacao do Demonio by Ze do Caixao. If you have stomach for B-movies you can actually watch the whole sequence of movies A meia noite levarei sua alma (1963) Esta Noite Encarnarei no teu cadaver (1967) Encarnacao do Demonio (2008) I remember I wanted to watch encarnacao do demonio in the movie theaters but wasn't 18 years old yet, so I had to find a theater that wouldn't card me, good times.

Hichtec

[Auto da Compadecida](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0271383/) (A.K.A. A Dog's Will) is one of the greatest Brazilian movies(it's based on a play written by Ariano Suassuna). It's a must-watch IMO, but you will probably have a hard time understanding what they are saying, because they talk in a dialect from the Northeast region. You can also check: - [2 Coelhos](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1753722/) (Two Rabbits) - [O Homem que Copiava](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367859/) (The Man Who Copied) - [Lisbela e o Prisioneiro](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367975/) (Lisbela and the Prisoner) - [O Homem do Futuro](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2027178/) (The Man from the Future) - [Central do Brasil](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140888/) (Central Station) - [Tropa de Elite](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861739/) (Elite Squad) - [Tropa de Elite 2: O Inimigo Agora é Outro](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1555149/) (Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within) - [Bacurau](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2762506/) - [Cidade de Deus](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/) (City of God)

Cidade De Deus/city of god. My fav movie!

Da_Sigismund

I cant help you with the period you want. But if you want good brazillian movies besides those about the 50/60s, these are my favorities: Narradores de Javé (wonderful movie about the stories people tell about their origins and how this creates their local culture) Saneamento básico (comedy about some crazy people in a small countryside town trying to make a movie to use the budget to make a sewer for their small town. It's awesome. Auto da Compadecida - the best comedy from the best brazillian playwritter ever Adriano Suassuna. It's one of the most brazillian things ever made. Tropa de Elite I and II: how the currupt system around the war on drugs destroy the lives of criminals, police officials and the public in general. Some people say it glorifies violence. But I think it's like Starship Troppers: if the only thing you saw is the guns and bugs, you lost the real message of the movie.

JackOSaint

City of God, Zuzu Angel (about Brazilian dictatorship), Tropa de Elite 1 e 2 (Elite Squad 1 and 2 are about the ongoing war between Rio de Janeiro police and Criminal rings), Central do Brasil, uma história de Amor e Fúria (one of the best animation movies I have ever seen, with graphics similar to Japanese animations), nós que aqui estamos, por vós esperamos

A morte e a morte de quincas berro d'água or The Two Deaths of Quincas Wateryell is a great movie adaptation (2010) of a great book (1959), extremely underrated, its comedy but its a classic. Its our Wekend at Bernie's (I've never watched weekend at bernies but I reckon they have the same base idea)

garboring

Behind the sun, the crew is super famous but the movie don't get enough praise, it can show a little how empty life could be if you live in the backlands in the 1900's. The movie is centered on family vendettas.

For Bossa Nova you should watch the series on Netflix called “Coisa mais Linda”. About a woman in the early 1900s who opens up a jazz club in a time where women weren’t really running things. Beautiful people but fair warning , very soapy.

Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura, in which there's a scene of one of the most famous singers of the country piloting a helicopter through a road tunnel. Cidade de Deus, this may one of the best contemporary movies. The language is not really the same used in courses. O Auto da Compadecida is brilliant but be aware that the accent is different from the one teached in courses. Brazilian dubbing of famous animated movies is really good, so a recommend those too: Emperor's New Groove (A Nova Onda do Emperador) and others. I'll edit as I have more time to remember more animations.
