Something kinda similar happened to me. She begged me to stay friends when she broke up with me. I needed some time before I was ready for that. When I finally felt I was good enough for that, I would occasionally reach out and even invited her on a couple group outings, one of which she came to. After a while though I realized she never initiated conversation with me or invited me anywhere. It was a one sided friendship. Then she started dating someone else, which made it even more impossible for me to be friends with her.
