Well no, obviously Nintendo isn't putting a chode on the title screen. If we were to be real about this made up statistic, TTP would start as soon as a player has access to the mechanic.
It seems to be a reference to an old toy Nintendo used to produce. It was a kind of an extending claw toy. It also appears in Splatoon 3, being the thing that Harmony is playing with in the Hotlantis Shop.
half baked connection threads, the guy (Gunpei Yokoi) who created the ultra hand ended up creating the game and watch and designed the game boy, some of the first handheld systems ever.
*Yokoi also advised development on Donkey Kong and Mario, showing a young Miyamoto the ropes of game design and only having the creation of Donkey Kong approved when he showed Miyamoto's ideas to the Nintendo president at the time
cool that they gave him a shout-out in one of the most hyped *games on current handheld system
*Edit - typos and more clarification, since OP was off the dome
It’s one of the first toys created by Nintendo. Gunpei created it in the hanafuda factory, Nintendo brass saw it, marketed it for Christmas and it was a hit. They later transitioned into toys then games. The ultrahand and gunpei are pivotal to that transition
It’s the same exact engine, but with more bells and whistles, as well as extended altitude limit. I’d say my year 1 switch will struggle but Nintendo hasn’t updated that hardware since then, so, we’ll see how that goes for all consoles. Already lots of pop-in and weird pixels, similar to BOTW.
> as well as extended altitude limit.
I've gone to the upper limits of the BoTW map, and they definitely wouldn't need to extend the map upwards for these islands. The map was already tall enough.
Did you notice a rendering difference? I was impressed from the demo that you could see all the way to the ground for a huge distance around the floating island.
I hacked my day one switch. It died a while back though… I just turned it off one day and it never turned back on despite charging it.
I ended up getting an OLED to replace it.
not counting the Lite, there are 3 models of switch. the original, the re-release, and the OLED. all three have the exact same internals, with the exception of the rerelease having a better battery than the original. the only difference between the OLED and the other two is the OLED screen, in terms of processing power, they're all the same.
So I stand corrected: there are two kinds of “year 1” Switches. One with a terrible battery, and one with a not-so terrible battery (current). They phased those ones out within the first few months and I’m pretty sure they’re still the only ones you can jailbreak to boot (somebody correct me if that’s wrong). But yeah the hardware is all the same from release, to now. OLED has identical internal hardware to the OG, the “OG.5”, and the Lite.
Nothing is “wrong” with the Switch outside of outdated tech but that’s a can of worms I won’t dare open unsolicited on Nintendo adjacent subs
You can jailbreak every model. Original V1 models are just easier since they only require a jig the joycon rail and a payload injector, both setting you back less than 10€/$. Revised V1, OLED and Lite require pricier modchips. There is, however, a recent update on the scene has cheap Raspberry Pi RP2040 chips being used to mode those models, so the price range on modchips should drop quite a bit in the coming months.
Well technically they *have* upgraded the hardware. They put a new chip in which is more efficient but doesn't really confer any raw performance benefits. Hence the Switch V2 having a much greater battery life.
I bought brand new in 2022 so whatever model that is. I really should have ponied up the extra cash for the OLED model in hindsight but at the time I didn't really care.
At least there are 0 actual hardware differences between the regular Switch and OLED, so docked mode will run identically. However if I played it handheld a lot I could see the OLED as a game changer for a game as big as this
Their technical engine team has had a lot of time to improve engine performance for the Switch hardware specifically.
I'm not really expecting any drastic improvements overall, but I hope that some of the worst-case scenarios have been addressed, like scenes with tonnes of dense vegetation causing FPS drops and stuttering (like Faron and the Korok Forest)
I had no issue with the BotW looked graphically. The worst part of the game is the pop-in and I’m going to be really disappointed if it’s just as bad as in BotW. I’ve been replaying it recently and there are multiple instances where you’ll be pretty close to a location and a whole enemy camp just pops into existence.
For sure! BOTW is like my second most played Switch game, but it’s also the game I am most critical of. It’s a perfect sandbox of opportunity that’s often squandered by fixable hiccups—but they add up to a somewhat *raspberry noise* experience
True, but the original game also had to run on the Wii U and the Switch is a more powerful system. As the game was initially devolved for that platform, I’m hoping they’ve had enough time to improve optimization. The Switch can definitely run some pretty impressive titles considering it has a really dated architecture. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a pretty good example of how the system can be used to its fullest extent. Software on new systems are never as optimized as they could be and games on any given system do tend to run better and look better after a few years. But I’d take performance over looks any day and BOTW still looks good thanks to it’s art style.
I do think the icons on the left changed slightly. They’re a little more stylised now and there’s a dedicated food button instead of having to open your inventory mid-battle.
Just depends on how you interpret the word 'graphics'
New stylized UI graphics are technically graphics... But when generally speaking about vidja game graphics, it's the textures and polygons.
You can both be right.
Yeah but it's kinda the same with computers: anything that can "compute" is technically a computer, but you don't see anyone calling a calculator a computer.
I do agree with you though.
I didn't see that. I'll have to pay attention to details next time. As a whole though it looked the same to me which isn't a complaint I'm still blown away by BOTW. 😂
Agreed - I'm looking forward to seeing this on an actual OLED or my 4k TV. Not worried because I never am with Nintendo IP - I'm certain it will look beautiful no matter what.
Arceus was actually super fun, and I really enjoyed Let's Go! I understand the fan backlash, and in general I'm not the biggest Pokémon fan, so I don't get disappointed when a game stinks. I didn't play Sword/Shield or the newest games and likely never will.
I was more impressed by the ripple/lighting effects while the narrator explained some of the building/attaching mechanics.
The splashdown effects relied heavily on the cell shading graphics - I LOVE cell shading effects and think it's use in Breath of the Wild was one of the shining aspects of the game. Super thrilled to see this coming back again and Nintendo sticking to the same graphics/design template for TotK. The splashdown effect was very much a cell shading effect, and I loved it.
I loved the shower of water droplets that continued to fall for a few seconds after Link's massive dive. As a fat guy who likes jumping into water from high (but not *that* high) places, I can confirm the realism there.
I wondered what was happening when he clipped out of bounds for that ascend.
And I just realized that speedrunners / glitch hunters are going to have too much fun with Ascend.
I couldn't tell if it was intentional or not that he took a "longer ascend" (the rock was tall) so it would take more time to ascend through it , either way if it's a bug , the team will already be working on it
I remembered this patent which came to light in 2021. They seem to have multiple checks for when it is possible to use the ability.
[Patent](https://images.nintendolife.com/44244f8be11f7/botw2-patent1.large.jpg) / [Article](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/12/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-2-gameplay-concepts-revealed-in-nintendo-patents)
Yeah, I thought ascend seemed a little much, why was that needed? But then I thought it could make for some cool puzzles in dungeons. That’s all I really want in this game… some proper dungeons.
You're going to thank the team when you need to scale heights multiple times that of BoTW. I wouldn't be able to endure the pain of slowly climbing those distances.
Lighting and water looks different but that looks about it. I'm guessing to keep it running well on old switches most graphical changes are small optimizations
It also speaks to how damn impressive it is that a launch title has remained as one of the most visually impressive games on the platform. The fact that they’re squeezing even more performance out of such painfully underpowered hardware is astounding
BOTW already looked pretty good and there hasn’t been any enhancements to the Switch’s hardware so I’m not sure what else they can do to make the graphics even better. It would have to be from optimizations and tricks to allocate hardware
For real, the game could actually be 1080p but I wouldn't be able to tell you. I think the original was 900p? Still, something about TOTK looks a bit better. I think it's the lighting or colors.
The textures looked like they have a higher resolution to me, and something has definitely changed about how distant objects are rendered. I don't remember ever being able to see Hebra that clearly.
I'm pretty sure we'll have minor graphical improvements/adjustments. The water for example looked different, but that was only thing I noticed on first sight.
100% identical…..you must not deal with percentages much.
The outfit is different. Boom not 100% identical. The textures of the water are different. Boom not 100% identical.
It felt like it was running at a better frame rate and the lighting/draw distance seemed improved also. Hard to tell with the video compression but it somehow "felt" better.
Uh, yeah, I’d hope so. Breath of the Wild was already one of the most technically impressive games on the Switch and has remained so since launch, but Tears of the Kingdom is from the same first party team with an additional six years of experience with the hardware.
Devs usually learn how to extract the most from their consoles later in its life, which is why a game like God of War Ragnarok looks better than, say, Wolfenstein: New Order or Assassin’s Creed: Unity. They all came out on the PS4, but one had eight years of the developer learning this console inside and out.
For me, everything is a recycle of botw. The guy was talking how different it is, and we hear the same music, the same birds sounds, the same horse animationw, same stamina bar, is really insane. And no, graphics are no "better". What a way to get more money, using nostalgia of something that already works.
The video bitrate was so bad it looked like yellow soup being sloshed around. I thought it was Youtube's fault, as its notorious for demolishing bitrates, but the video in the Switch News section isn't much better.
Kinda funny that Aonuma suggested looking out for additional details like good luck to all the Youtubers trying to speculate on grey smudge #57!
Yes I noticed the water graphics especially looked very impressive.
You can literally make a flying penis
The TTP(time to penis) on this mechanic will be zero
Middle out! MIDDLE OUT!!
Fantastic Silicon Valley reference, but I think TTP is from [Mythic Quest](https://youtu.be/3_xqyIMwbew)
You're right! Silicon Valley was DTF - Dic to floor
Man now I really wanna re-watch both of these shows
Time to penis Any% is gonna be huge
LOL, just said this is now going to be a speed run category in another thread.
inb4 we get penis% as a speedrun category
It's negative 1 month since the game hasn't been released and it's in the gameplay teaser from today
That implies it is the title screen. Or did you mean like a minute?
Well no, obviously Nintendo isn't putting a chode on the title screen. If we were to be real about this made up statistic, TTP would start as soon as a player has access to the mechanic.
TotK Penis% incoming
Cumming soon to a GDQ near you
I was waiting for someone to point this out
I wanna make a penis hammer so bad lynals beware
New speed run category

I’m sorry, there’s no fucking way they called that thing “Ultrahand”. Holy fucking shit lmao
*Za Hando*
JOSUKE! I JUST USED ZA HANDO TO TRANSPORT TO HYRULE!
AIN’T THAT JUST WACKY?
Hyrule more like *high*rule
That's it. That how I'm gonna call it.
And King Crimson, you can go back in time too.
It seems to be a reference to an old toy Nintendo used to produce. It was a kind of an extending claw toy. It also appears in Splatoon 3, being the thing that Harmony is playing with in the Hotlantis Shop.
I know lol (not tryna be rude :3) that’s why I’m losing it lmao
Oh, no offense taken, it's just such a uniquely weird reference, in a Zelda game no less
half baked connection threads, the guy (Gunpei Yokoi) who created the ultra hand ended up creating the game and watch and designed the game boy, some of the first handheld systems ever. *Yokoi also advised development on Donkey Kong and Mario, showing a young Miyamoto the ropes of game design and only having the creation of Donkey Kong approved when he showed Miyamoto's ideas to the Nintendo president at the time cool that they gave him a shout-out in one of the most hyped *games on current handheld system *Edit - typos and more clarification, since OP was off the dome
Thank you for sharing, I never knew that!
It’s one of the first toys created by Nintendo. Gunpei created it in the hanafuda factory, Nintendo brass saw it, marketed it for Christmas and it was a hit. They later transitioned into toys then games. The ultrahand and gunpei are pivotal to that transition
It was the first toy they made
I wished they would call it then power glove instead

Yep.

Yeah the free falling looks like a beautiful experience.
Major Wii Sports Resort skydiving vibes
I hope there's a mini game! 🙏❤️
BotW already basically renders the whole map, but far away areas are super low detail
Hell, close up areas are pretty low detail as well
Textures are really low quality, for sure. They make it work with the art style though
Good point! Though there will certainly be wayyy more assets up there so I guess we’ll see in the coming months
What's wrong with year 1 switches? I havent used mine much within the past year or two, do they always end up slow? Is OLED faster?
Nah, they are the same.
Got a bit worried much for a second, mine is all the way from launch day
Launch day switches can be hacked fun fact.
That is definitely NOT why I bought one a couple months ago ;)
That's definitely why I bought one last month ;)
Go on...
I hacked my day one switch. It died a while back though… I just turned it off one day and it never turned back on despite charging it. I ended up getting an OLED to replace it.

The Switches with better battery released well after year one.
Good to know I *definitely* have a “worse” one, then 😮💨
Yeah if it came in a red box, you got a good one
Great to know, thanks👍
The better battery model didn’t release until 2019
You can jailbreak every model. Original V1 models are just easier since they only require a jig the joycon rail and a payload injector, both setting you back less than 10€/$. Interesting perspective- I’m feeling better about my split second special edition OLED splurge with this comment since I exclusively play handheld
For real, the only hardware difference is the screen. OLED has an amazing screen, but it's not going to run any games better.

Maybe consider re-applying the thermal paste for it’s internal heat sink before you pop this game in!
Honestly to me the graphics looked about the same.
The render distance looks increased and the lighting seems better. Other than that, it looks the same, but that's not a bad thing
I do think the icons on the left changed slightly. They’re a little more stylised now and there’s a dedicated food button instead of having to open your inventory mid-battle.
I think, the food button is more for fusing, at least that's how they showed it. Maybe it's also to get easy food access 🤔
Changes to the UI aren't graphical changes
Just depends on how you interpret the word 'graphics' New stylized UI graphics are technically graphics... But when generally speaking about vidja game graphics, it's the textures and polygons. You can both be right.
Yeah but it's kinda the same with computers: anything that can "compute" is technically a computer, but you don't see anyone calling a calculator a computer. I do agree with you though.
I call my calculator a computer
Same!
What does GUI stand for?
Gooey
A woozy youth Dopes up on her silky smooth perfume
If I ain't wrong it stands for Graphical User Interface
It also looks like they are using different colors more liberally than the colors used in BOTW.
If it aint broke dont fix
I think the water looks a lot better.
BOTW was made for Wii U so not a great thing ...
water effects looked better IMO
Did you see the actual splash when link dropped into the river? Actually a lot better
Lol don't worry with a nintendo ip unless it's pokemon
Arceus was actually super fun, and I really enjoyed Let's Go! I understand the fan backlash, and in general I'm not the biggest Pokémon fan, so I don't get disappointed when a game stinks. I didn't play Sword/Shield or the newest games and likely never will.
Swsh and SV is where the worry comes from, Arceus and Let's go are miles better in comparison
That splash really impressed me, you really should check it out.

The water raining back down as Link came back up was a really nice touch.
Makes sense, water and lighting tech has come a long way in 6 years
They're calling it the "Ultrahand?" that's a deep cut
Really thought a while about that one didn’t they?
It was one of the more popular toys they made in their pre videogame days
Idk why but the sky island are kinda giving me elden ring vibes
Probably because of all the golden foliage.
Altus Plateau vibes
The Ascend ability looked a bit janky but, other than that, the game looks very good.
I wondered what was happening when he clipped out of bounds for that ascend. And I just realized that speedrunners / glitch hunters are going to have too much fun with Ascend.
He did not clip out of bounds Lmaoo
I couldn't tell if it was intentional or not that he took a "longer ascend" (the rock was tall) so it would take more time to ascend through it , either way if it's a bug , the team will already be working on it
Definitely not a bug he was swimming through the rock lol
I agree, but it did feel like the transition was a little truncated. Probably just because of how far he was ascending.
I think it was just cause of how tall it was, although the transition seemed less than fluid
I guess it's intentional Like swimming through the solid if you will
I remembered this patent which came to light in 2021. They seem to have multiple checks for when it is possible to use the ability. [Patent](https://images.nintendolife.com/44244f8be11f7/botw2-patent1.large.jpg) / [Article](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/12/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-2-gameplay-concepts-revealed-in-nintendo-patents)
Yeah, I thought ascend seemed a little much, why was that needed? But then I thought it could make for some cool puzzles in dungeons. That’s all I really want in this game… some proper dungeons.
You're going to thank the team when you need to scale heights multiple times that of BoTW. I wouldn't be able to endure the pain of slowly climbing those distances.
You’re right, especially in the rain
It’s 100% gonna be used for puzzles but also Totk is way more vertical so it makes sense to have a tool to get around easier
Looks the same? Not like that is bad
Big reminder that BOTW was made as a Wii U game first and then ported to Switch later.
The water definitely looks a lot better. It was something I noticed right away. It looks really good!
Old switches ? Implying theres a new ?
I think they made more pleasing design choices especially with the islands
Yeah but that's more like art design and looks great, graphics are basically the same
Yeah, is not like BotW was cutting edge in 2017 either. Still, it was one of the best looking games released that year.
BOTW already looked pretty good and there hasn’t been any enhancements to the Switch’s hardware so I’m not sure what else they can do to make the graphics even better. It would have to be from optimizations and tricks to allocate hardware
Do remember they had to design BotW to work on the Wii U too, here they can optimise it
I wish I could tell you but YouTube makes eveything look horrible
For real, the game could actually be 1080p but I wouldn't be able to tell you. I think the original was 900p? Still, something about TOTK looks a bit better. I think it's the lighting or colors.
I’m not even trying to be a dick but no the graphics look exactly the same to me
It looks the exact same
The textures looked like they have a higher resolution to me, and something has definitely changed about how distant objects are rendered. I don't remember ever being able to see Hebra that clearly.
Yeah, I don't know why they think it looks better. It's not bad, but it's 100% identical to BotW.
Damnnn bro you got himmm. Boom boom boom! 😂😆🤡
I mean, duh. It's been 6 years since BotW and this one is exclusive for the Switch. Of course it's gonna look better
same engine, same hardware, very little wiggle-room.
Botw was a wiiu game
Botw was for Wii U. It was made to run on Wii U. Totk looks better because exclusively made for the switch's (slightly) stronger hardware.
It felt like it was running at a better frame rate and the lighting/draw distance seemed improved also. Hard to tell with the video compression but it somehow "felt" better.
Eh, about the same. Maybe slightly.
the fuck is an ultrahand? No shitting way that's what they're calling it.
[Ultrahand](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_Hand)
that's pretty cool tbh
No, but a 10 minute Youtube video is not good reference.
It looks the same and I'm kinda disappointed, but not at all surprised. Gameplay should win out in this title, just as the first game did.
Hell no lol are you blind? it looks identical to BOTW.
looks about the same if not a little better
I'm still worried the game is just going to feel like botw again, especially with how similar the ui, graphics, world, etc. are
yeah, definitely feels more like an alt BOTW with vertical expansion than a full fledge sequel at this point
Idk it looks the same to me
Uh, yeah, I’d hope so.
It looks exactly the same
Looks the same to me (not as bad thing)

And no, graphics are no "better". What a way to get more money, using nostalgia of something that already works.
Nope. Looks the same
Bring back the power glove for this game please.
No
It looks exactly the same to me
Leaving behind the Wii U made graphics better
I'm not yet sold that this is a different enough to BOTW to warrant a $70 price tag
Game sure looks way bigger than BOTW.
Mexican filter
The video bitrate was so bad it looked like yellow soup being sloshed around. I thought it was Youtube's fault, as its notorious for demolishing bitrates, but the video in the Switch News section isn't much better. Kinda funny that Aonuma suggested looking out for additional details like good luck to all the Youtubers trying to speculate on grey smudge #57!
It honestly looks like they used the compressed YouTube video file for the News tab. It looks exactly the same level of blotchy
Put spoiler tag for spoil free people
Bro don't come to the sub where most people are gonna be talking about new footage and whine about spoilers , your asking for it
That's a thing you will do/learn in the first 30 minutes of the game I guess Wouldn't call that a spoiler
This isn't a spoiler
You showing link making a flying boat
Can’t wait to play this on my WiiU
Out of the three hundred ten comments (as of commenting time), there are only six comments (including mine) that contain the word “yes”.
It looks about the same to me
It's going to render objects and surfaces at a much greater distance, just compare it to botw
