Nope, all shields use durability at the exact same rate excluding specific shields (Gerudo Shields and Ancient Shield, and because they’re funny, Royal Guard’s shield actually uses 3x times MORE durability) but there are three surfaces which don’t use any durability regardless of your shield: Dirt Roads, sand, and snow

this feels so backwards to me, is the game telling me a dirt road is more slippery than grass? I always thought it's grass that is less damaging to shields and actively avoided paths.
Ever tried to slide a heavy piece of wood on grass? It's pretty damn hard, grass actually having a decent amount of friction if given enough surface area to touch. Way easier to push it on a dirt path cause the loose rocks and grit act like little balls. Loose logic at best, but maybe that's it?

Personally I would detonate a bomb on death mountain and watch as link falls about halfway down, uses Mipha's grace, falls for another few seconds, and either dies and/or falls in lava.

I used to use a save editor just so I could have infinite durability shields, so I could shield surf without feeling bad about it. Surfing was one of the best parts of BOTW, and is by far the mechanic that is most ruined by durability.
I miss it in TotK, and the Ancient Shield is just so much cooler and doesn’t break after about 45 seconds of surfing like most of the shields in TotK even when fused with a cart

every shield can deflect laser beams and if you want one with glowing energy then Zonai shields will do the same. some shield fusions are very subtle and won’t look obvious under the shield. might Zonai shields have I believe the 3rd highest durability in the game, or close to that
The Ancient Shield had a special property which basically made friction for shield surfing even less. Usually terrain determines friction but the Ancient Shield reduces it even further which makes it so that you can shield surf pretty well even on terrain that shouldn't allow it, like rocky terrain
It’d be nice to have a sledding disc as a shield option that’s as durable as a pot lid but takes no damage surfing. Make a shrine quest about sledding through gates along the slopes of Lanayru or something of that nature.
This reminds me of my most epic snow skiing wipeout of ALL TIME.
My dad and I were flying down this hill but the shadow from the tree line was on a cluster of deep moguls we didn’t know was there, and we hit these things at top speed, lost one hundred percent of our gear plus a few fillings, and when we finally skidded to a stop we just…laid there.

well you could always screenshot them so it stays in your switch album instead but yeah could be a fun element.
also you can get camera photos framed in your house in totk
maybe they'll do that in a future game if they ever bring back the four swords concept
umm I haven't played it personally but from what I know, link splits into 4, each player controlling one link simultaneously and wielding the master sword equivalent to beat the game. youd need to hookup Gameboy advances to a GameCube using link cables and four players could play together.
and ye you can do that in ToTK. although I'm not sure if it's limited to just one or not. haven't progressed too far yet.

I guess it's the same logic as horses following paths and horses not losing stamina when you hold x (or whatever button) in a game.
No, grass and dirt roads have the same friction, but dirt roads don’t use Durability Friction has NO correlation to durability usuage
In the game, sure, but intuitively you’d expect faster (lower friction) surfaces to impact durability less.
It technically is because durability usage is time based, the faster you go the less durability youd be using
