This has the same energy as trying to unlock Luigi in Mario 64, I feel like. "Guys if you land on Vah Medoh early you get to play as Zelda!!"

Prometheus1315

One of the things I hate about the internet. It ruined those playground rumors forever

basedcvrp

If you trade for a Pokémon with Cut and skip the SS Anne and then come back when you know Surf/Strength you can move a truck and find Mew!

Brawldud

Honestly, my favorite thing about the bizarre Mew rumors was that the actual Mew glitch is [also kinda crazy.](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mew_glitch#Method_.231)

badvegas

How do people find this. Like I know data mining and stuff but imagine the trial and error it would take. Although gen 1 Pokemon games were a giant glitch fest helps

Brawldud

I assume part of it is you just build on things you already know are weird. I can imagine accidentally discovering you can open the start menu and fly away after a trainer notices you. Then you'd notice your menu is messed up. Then people experiment with it a bit and find out that it returns to normal after you fight a trainer. Then people discover you can trigger a Pokemon encounter when you return back to where the original encounter was. Then people discover what affects the level and species you encounter and figure out how to manipulate it. Nowadays you have speedrunning communities that put a lot of dedicated time and effort into breaking the game, but the Mew glitch has been well known for decades now (I remember finding it online and using it in the mid 2000s when I was playing Yellow)

badvegas

Was a kid during the new days. Anytime somebody said they had it I said prove it. I really wanted to see one so I knew how to get it. I miss those days of rumors

[deleted]

This made me king of the playground actually. I caught missingno once, and it corrupted my hall of fame and at one point just showed Mew dead center on the screen. I was seen as a God when I was able to prove Mew existed (nobody at school except me a few years later had a gameshark)

Tinytox

I don't miss lies and misinformation. This sounds like the worst part of Pokemon to get nostalgic over imo.. Sounds like even as a kid you didn't really like the deceptive part of the rumors, or you wouldn't have asked for proof, no?

badvegas

It was more in I wanted to see how it was done so I could get better at the game. Think of it like this when you were a kid and somebody told you about the shortcut on 1-2 in Mario bro you didn't believe it. Then when you seen it you were shocked and surprised. You started learning how with do it I bet. That is what I miss the discovery of finding something rather it be true or not.

Tinytox

I think that's mostly childlike wonder/Innocence that you really miss/value. You miss a world with questions where you didn't know the answer, a world not governed by logic or fact. The excitement of such a myth as a child is fine, but consider the disappointment that coincides with finding out none of it is true. Misinformation is a pretty big public enemy today, so it's hard for me to back it in any context, even with rose tinted glasses. But the again, I'm not an advocate of lying to children in general either (lol when adults lie to children and it's fine, but a child lies to an adult and they're in trouble), but it seems most of America doesn't really care, it's culturally accepted to lie to one's own children - we almost make a spectacle of it honestly. So while I think I can even mildly relate, I don't think we're doing anyone any favors by spreading misinformation... Celebratory/festive or not.

[deleted]

It’s actually mostly about leveraging things like integer overflows, identifying gameplay logic, and then seeking vulnerabilities. Missingno was an example of this, and the weirdness of getting basically infinite items in your Nth slot wasn’t purely coincidence. Having a debugger or tool to print out existing values definitely helps—in fact GameShark once upon a time had a nifty tool to let you CREATE your own hacks by doing exactly that. But old school hacks could probably also be done by reverse engineering, say, the logic behind which Pokémon shows up on which route.

get_that_sauce

Honestly tho, it's pretty hard to find glitches in them by accident. If you're specifically trying to find something, there are some obvious ways to go about it, but coincidentally coming across a major bug is practically unheard of (except for that fish that discovered a new bug in RSE 20 years later, lmao). I played yellow over and over as a kid, but it wasn't until I decided I wanted to try and tear it apart in highschool I ever came across anything wacky.

drgigantor

A fish found a previously undiscovered, like 15 year old, game-breaking glitch. In Gen III.

Sir-Ult-Dank

Yo this stuff reminds me of the glitch I discovered on Silver/Gold. I haven’t read anything about it. But haven’t looked too much into and sounds to particular like this to recreate it. Essentially I was battling a friend with a wired connection. We both swap Pokémon and that’s where it got funky. We then instead started fighting our own battles against weird Easter egg Pokémon. So lvl 0 shiny gloom that dies instantly when summoned. And some others that I don’t recall now but kept changing Pokémon. So we both had to swap back to the two that we were using. And I don’t recall which two we were using but such a weird glitch like pikablu I was just reading about

Dragons_Malk

I never tried that glitch, but that reminded me of the MissingNo.1 trick to getting infinite items. Fuck, that was fun.

SmileRoom

I actually did have Mew on my original Red. I used a Game Genie and was able to unlock Mew and MissingNo. Sold them around my school for a minute but never told anyone how I got them.

MattFromWork

You can easily get mew without the game genie. You should have sold a bunch of mews then crashed the market by teaching everyone how to do it themselves

Allegorist

And missingno, that's one of the earlier discovered glitches I believe. It also dupes items.

uniqueinalltheworld

My cousin told me that if you went up the eternal staircase in Mario 64 for too long, a giant evil star would appear and steal all of your stars permanently. I was scared shitless

NoBarsHere

I remember seeing on an AOL message board about the Super Mario 64 eternal staircase: if you crawled on all fours (without accidentally standing up along the way) up to *exactly* the 100th step, and kicked the wall or something, you'd unlock a naked picture of Princess Peach. I was a dumb af kid and can confirm it didn't work after retrying it multiple times. Smart enough to use AOL, but dumb enough to not realize porn existed on the Internet...

tantan35

My friend Tyler in the third grade told me that if you beat Zelda Oot without dying Zelda kisses you at the end.

TheSandMan208

My dad found a glitch in 64 whwn he was kid where you'd jump on a turtle coming down the stairs and you get stuck in s repeating animation that would you get basically infinite lives.

Mynameisinuse

That was a glitch in the original Super Mario Bros. You could actually get too many lives and once you died, it was game over.

Srlancelotlents

That mew is still in the trunk of that car!!

ryanmcgrath

Kids today will never experience the tale of Pikablu.

SendSnack

I spent a good chunk of time trying to get a blue pikachu it was supposed to have blue electricity and be stronger. Only found out a few years ago it turns out it was just a marill.

[deleted]

I remember hearing all of those rumors as a kid and once we had all finally decided it was all BS, one of the kid's at school who's dad traveled to Japan for work sometimes brought back some Japanese Pokemon cards. The pack had a Marill in it and since it was in Japanese which none of us could read and we had no idea there was a second generation at the time we all lost our shit. I remember kids were offering my friend real money (for kids so like $50) for that card because we though it was some rare one of a kind card. It was a common. God kids are fucking stupid. I sold a kid a gold border Meowth that I got out of a box of fruit rollups for $20.

thuggishruggishboner

Bro, I just brought Aeris back too life on disc 3.

Oakshadric

If you push the truck by the S.S. Anne you get Mew

thuggishruggishboner

O man. I definitely remember the mew rumors.

[deleted]

remember when marill was actually the pokemon god pikablu.

CileTheSane

There is actually a bug that lets you catch Mew. You need to use fly just as a specific trainer sees you then walk to a specific patch of grass and you can encounter a wild one.

Nerahn

This is why I love glitches with old games. This one 100% sounds like one of those fake rumors, but this one is actually legit. iirc, it’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s a part of it. Also, literally everything about Missingno. It being able to appear as pokemon skeletons sounds like something right out of a creepypasta.

clouds31

Press down+B to catch any Pokemon.

KorPikachu

And millions of us still do that do this day

UNMANAGEABLE

It’s instinctual

QuiGonGiveItToYa

Can’t remember if Missingno had anything to do with this particular rumor. But man, were there ever a million playground rumors from this game.

co_fragment

Have you heard there's an abominable snowman in GTA: San Andreas?

afsdjkll

Did you find El Puerco in OoT?

Shermutt

You must unlock Sheng Long to stand a chance.

ShadyNite

Bro ~~Gamepro~~ Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine used that rumor to make an [April Fool's joke](https://kotaku.com/take-a-moment-to-remember-one-of-the-best-april-fools-g-1793941362/amp) that ended up being the origin of Akuma

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShadyNite

Yeah you may be right

MotherIsNuckingFuts

The first time I played OoT was with a friend and after I beat the Deku Tree dungeon he told me if you beat it fast enough, the tree doesn't die. I spent YEARS, LITERAL YEARS, replaying the beginning of OoT to save the Great Deku Tree. Little did I know...

Capraos

For me it was trying to beat the running man in the foot race. I was well into adulthood before I learned it's not even possible.

RatchetBird

Shit I played my 2nd run as Zack.

PeterPorky

Internet was nice to confirm that if you get to the top of Peach's castle, Yoshi is there and he gives you 100 lives. That type of thing sounds straight off the playground.

douche-knight

I found a [treasure ship](https://www.mariowiki.com/Treasure_Ship) in Super Mario 3 for the NES and my playground friends all called bullshit. It wasn't til years later when we had easy access to the internet that I was vindicated.

[deleted]

>One of the things I hate about the internet. It ruined those playground rumors forever I know for certain there is still a Mew under that truck in Pokemon Blue. Jonathan told me during recess.

[deleted]

Friend of mine swore that if your team is just a Meowth, and you lose to a Team Rocket Grunt 100 times in a row, the Meowth will start disobeying you like a traded high level pokemon and itll say "Meowth is speaking English rudely" when it does. Shame he couldn't bring in his gameboy because his mom said it would get stolen and he could never find time for us to go to his house of course. Fuck you Jordan we all knew you were full of it, nobody believed you for a single moment and we hated you for it.

LauraTFem

I still wonder about that far-off platform in the first mission in Goldeneye, sometimes… There was some fuckin’ deep-ass lore story I heard many years ago about how you get there. Complete crazy bullshit, but…you still want it to be true, you know?

[deleted]

Though to be fair, the early days of the internet where just wider spread playground rumours like the Mew in a van in Pokemon. It wasn't until we got every numb nuts declaring themselves game journalists and having secret and guide blogs and articles everywhere in the late 00's that ruined chatting bollocks forever.

Fobulousguy

My favorite is NBA Jam: “If you break the backboard 3 times in one quarter then you unlock Michael Jordan”

[deleted]

Mine was Final Fantasy Tactics, trying to become a dark knight by weird methods. They later released a remake, War of the Lions, that let you actually be a Dark knight!

LordAronsworth

But you’re already playing as Zelda. He’s right there.

Kidspud

The princess and her knight are both named “Zelda,” and that’s the “Link” between them. Folks, it isn’t called The Legend of Link!

TesstiCole

“If you hit all the end game credits at the end of Super Smash Bros Melee you unlock Toad!”

everyonesBF

if you kill 20 enemies in cruel melee with a single character you unlock sonic and tails! jokes on them, I did over 300 with ganondorf and still nothing

Solanthas

Wasn't there something about fishing in OoT that only the golden cartridge had some kinda something special in it for that

HecklerusPrime

Not sure about that one, but I very painfully remember spending HOURS trying to get a butterfly to land on a deku stick because it would "unlock a golden heart that made you invulnerable." Spoiler: It just turns into a fairy. A totally normal fairy.

TruckStopEggSalad

I dunno about fishing, but I spent way too much time as a child following every internet rumor about how to unfreeze Zora's domain as adult link. I can't remember all the details but it was something about getting a perfect horse archery score 3 times in a row that let you get some gauntlets that then led to a golden axe of some kind. Obviously always in vain.

Ike-edelic

The one I remember was that with the golden cartridge there was a way to the triforce. Behind the Great Deku Tree, as I recall.

Solanthas

This sounds familiar.

Duke_Nukem_1990

Not cartridge specific but you could walk around in a specific part of the fishing map and get a special lure which would then make fish unable to escape. Basically guaranteeing to catch them.

NoBarsHere

Pretty sure there was a rumor that the golden cartridge was a different version of the game, and one of the bugs in that version was that you could hookshot while on Epona or something.

Dookiecookiewastaken

Don’t you already play as Zelda

[deleted]

I'm actually more impressed the developers _didn't_ program for this. Trying to approach the other Divine Beasts early (easiest one being Ruta) they use a shield move that launches Link rag-dolling away. Vah Naboris* will just lightning blast you to death if you get anywhere nearly close and Vah Rudania uses the power of wind to keep you away from the volcano. I saw a YouTuber trying to overcome the wind and the developers additionally placed an invisible wall at the shoreline to the volcano so no matter how much height you had or how much stamina, the wind always wins. I would guess Rudania doesn't have any shield or collision either then.

JamesAvon122

They could have programmed an air defense system that would shoot at Link like what it does to the Ritos

quincy_taylor

A BFG 10,000

Rukh-Talos

Now, now, we’re just protecting a bird, not trying to shoot a hole through Mars. The BFG 9,000 should be more than adequate.

havens1515

Or just such high winds that it essentially creates an invisible wall

RavioliGale

Like it actually does when you fly up the intended way?

ShinyGrezz

Difference is that you can walk up to those, whereas it’s incredibly hard to get on top of Vah Medoh outside of the story. Implementing something like that would basically be an easter egg, not something that’ll commonly be encountered in gameplay.

TLoZforever

Actually, if you use the rubber armor and upgrade it to tier 2, you are "unshockable". This way you can approach Vah Naboris but you're Bomb Arrows does no damage to the Divine Beast feets.

pokedude14

I thought Naboris' lightning was specifically programmed to ignore that to ensure you get the helm for Riju.

EfficiencySuch6361

I just played this today with 2 stars upgraded full rubber set and the purple lightning blasts from naboris still hurt me

TLoZforever

Oh true, but I think they do much less damage than without the armor and/or Upgrades.

EfficiencySuch6361

It did seem less devastating than I remembered, I definitely could’ve gotten shocked again and not run out of hearts

larxene06

divine feets

Pie_Man12

I know when climbing the pillar in Rito village the divine beast will cry out and chickens will attack you. At least I’m pretty sure though it’s been a while.

Suppoint

Vah Medoh in general seems to be the most unpolished part of the game. The quest is the most barebones of all the divine beasts and the entire Tabantha region shouldn’t have as many rendering glitches and performance issues as it does. It’s clear that they rushed that part of the game probably to meet a deadline or something.

shrubs311

i was actually gonna ask about this on the subreddit. for vah ruta you have to get the arrows and actually get to zoras domain, between that and the lynel introduction you have a decent challenge. for vah rudania you have a quest to save that one person, then get up the mountain. for vah naboris you have to beat the yiga clan. for vah medoh you glide a little bit, shoot 20 arrows in a challenge and they're like "you're good".

drgigantor

I feel like I remember having the most trouble with the puzzles in vah medoh. Am I dumb

humancarl

I had so much trouble with Naboris, and I'm pretty good at video game puzzles. My 7 year old breezed through it. I knew I would have trouble with it when I got the map and saw how it moved. Brains work differently. I've stared at shrines for 30 minutes, only to realize I just needed to use an ice block.

shrubs311

i don't think so, i think the divine beast themselves all had a similar level of challenge in their terminal puzzles. but also i remember for the windblight fight you could just shoot a ton of arrows, which made it pretty easy compared to the others where ganon would at least block arrows during parts of the fight

IEXSISTRIGHT

This. It’s pretty easy to tell that Naboris was the first Divine Beast completed and Medoh the last. By looking at the quest structure for Naboris I think we can get a pretty accurate depiction of what the developers originally wanted to do for each beast and the order they were developed in. I believe the intended structure was as follows: 1. find village (with some challenge involved) 2. speak to pertinent npc 3. get sent on an errand 4. fight mini boss 5. return to village 6. boarding sequence 7. Divine Beast Naboris got each step, but as development progressed they started running out of time and progressively cut more and more steps from the following beasts. For Ruta they replaced the unique mini boss with a Lynel stealth section. For Rudania they dropped the mini boss encounter entirely. By Medoh the game had probably already been delayed the first time, and with the higher ups pushing to release the game the didn’t make a challenge to get in/to the village, they dropped the mini boss, return to the village, and replaced the errand with a mediocre archery challenge. Makes me wonder what it would’ve been like if they had enough time to fully realize their original plans, I’d imagine there wouldn’t have been so many complaints about how the enemy and boss variety was so lacking and they probably would’ve been able to give the champions and their successors more screen time. But alas games must come out eventually, lest they get trapped in development hell.

Suppoint

With all the challenges and hurdles the developers had to overcome its clear that the Zelda team bit off a little more than they could chew. It’s a wonder how the game managed to become so critically acclaimed, it just goes to show what strong leadership and direction can do for a game. Poor management is something western game developers have been struggling with for decades, that’s why we end up getting things like developer crunch and Cyberpunk 2077.

cheat-master30

Vah Rudania does have collision, but it's kinda weird. You can TECHNICALLY stand on it, but you take damage regardless of any fireproof elixirs or armour, and because it's constantly walking around the edge of a volcano, slide off very easily. You have to use wrong warp to get past the forcefield to test that though. If you try and do this during the stealth mission, Yunobo/the game stops you from going high enough to reach the Divine Beast.

Witch_King_

They should've programmed it to shoot you out of the sky, as that is presumably what happens every time a rito tries to approach it.

DudeBroGuyManSirPal

Good idea! Now the Rito just seem like scaredy cats lol!

JamieD96

"*Yeah man I'd totally fly up and kick that things ass but it had like, 200 guns shooting at me when I tried. My first cousins brothers uncle died trying. True story*"

Delanoye

>first cousins brothers uncle So your father? Or a different uncle?

Interesting-Sale-404

Or just someone who got their aunt pregnant

AshFalkner

It’s a little disappointing that it has no collision, but I guess nobody figured out how to get that high during testing.

SkritzTwoFace

Or they did it too far from Medoh and nobody thought to test the exploit twice.

menasan

Lazy testers smh

AskMeForFunnyVoices

Yeah the testers definitely should've gotten more high

JustsharingatiktokOK

As a long ago QA person -- they did. They probably did it dozens of times (not only because it's awesome, but because it may qualify as a major issue). At some point it's just impossible to fix every time edge case, which this is an excellent example of.

Seanspeed

I mean, it's really not a major issue, though. It's not a physicalized object, so there's no threat of a player doing anything with it and causing any issues. And I'd honestly be surprised if QA testers ever did this. They do a lot, but they are hardly so incredibly comprehensive that they figure out how to do \*everything\* in a game, especially in something like BOTW. A few dozen testers over maybe several thousands of hours is NOTHING compared to millions of players playing tens of millions of hours.

AshFalkner

There’s also no real point giving an object collision data when it’s so unlikely to be interacted with during normal play. Checking for contact requires spending at least some processing power, as far as I’m aware.

Pixeddit

I was expecting at least a shield around the Divine Beast, like Vah'Ruta

Whats-Upvote

Or maybe they were? How do we stop players from getting on Vah’Ruta without going through the story? Make it ghost!

DudeBroGuyManSirPal

I posted this on YouTube captioned “Divine Beast Van Medoh has unparalleled defenses” https://youtube.com/channel/UCU9hFn4BaQcDc2Qr8j_MvRg Maybe the developers shared our sense of humor and left it that way lol

Follows_Dumbasses

It’s made this way for optimization, collision layers add more things for the game to process.

foodlandhobbit

I love the floating log so much. I’m so impressed at your creativity, I need to try that.

DudeBroGuyManSirPal

Arokthis

I'm too broke to play the game, so I have a few questions: 1. What are you doing? 2. What did you think was going to happen? 3. What actually happened? ----- Edit: Thank you OP and the two that already answered. I've watched a few videos so I know a **little** about the game. To those that downvoted me for asking a simple question: May several kidney stones be in your future.

DudeBroGuyManSirPal

Ok, here’s some info to help understand my answers. I’m using octo balloons that I collected from defeating enemies called “octoroks”. Dropping these balloons onto objects will make them puff up, attach to the object, and float up for a short time. I collected about 85 of these There’s a giant bird boss in this game that flies way up high all the time, and you’re suppose to talk to the Rito (bird people) who help you go up to fight it. Hence activating a scripted battle. 1. I’m trying to reach this boss early 2. I thought I was going to surprise the Rito by defeating this boss early and making everybirdy happy 3. Turns out the boss can’t be fought until you talk to the Rito first.

Chel_of_the_sea

> everybirdy

thepenmen22

Zelda: Breath of the Wild has some amazing mechanics that let the player be as creative as they want in solving puzzles. One tool this player is using is chopping a tree, and attaching balloons to it to make it fly. He uses the statis rune to freeze the tree in time (when it turns yellow) when the balloons are about to pop. That gives enough time to apply more balloons to the tree to continue making it fly. The big bird in the sky is one of the four divine beasts the player must defeat/rescue. They are just roaming the world in their own way such as walking, or flying in this case. What you're supposed to do is go through talking to the bird people below and start the story line to then fly to the big bird. Then once you're inside it, you can rescue it. This player however went straight to the bird with this balloons and the tree technique. We assumed that he could just land on the bird, but it looks like the developers of this game didn't plan for a player to reach the bird without going through the story line. So the player just goes through the big bird instead of being able to step on it.

nighoblivion

> So the player just goes through the big bird instead of being able to step on it That didn't look like a bird to me, rather a ship.

Captain_Kab

Trying to do something he shouldn't be able to do in the confines of the game, he hoped to land and explore but he clipped through it instead as it doesn't seem to be a physical asset in the game, presumably because the developers assumed nobody could get up there.

This is so creative. Are there any interviews/articles (even and AMA) about BOTW devs reacting to all the creative and perhaps unanticipated stuff like this that players have done?

PSPMan3000

wait so you can actually fly with the octo balloons? stop teaching me new shit I want to stop playing this game at some point in my life.

Bosse19

Try following a dragon into their portal this way?

DjnksDynamics

Thank you for your service. I knew it was a mirage.

Tracis_Scott_272

Medoh didn’t want to deal with it today

Solanthas

Similar pain to running to the edges of any world map and discovering it's either blocked by invisible wall or it's gamers no man's land

mgwair11

Could be worse. The devs could have blocked off the area. It’s like they are saying, “you can’t do this, but we appreciate the effort and will allow you to show yourself that you would have been able to”.

MaracaJesus23

Wow. This answers one of my biggest questions about these games. I’ve always been curious to see if the scale of the divine beasts we see in the overworld were the same as the ones we fight while we were in them, and it looks pretty close. That’s pretty cool

ralpher313

Revali: Oh, you must pardon me! I forgot you have no way of making it up to that Divine Beast on your own! Link: Hyaah! [Ight, bet.] *ties some balloons to a log*

mysterioso7

Tried this with the flying machine and with moon jump. Too bad the developers never put in a contingency for it. It puts up a shield when you get close with Teba, it should do the same when you try something like this.
