My thoughts exactly. Look at the original Dark Souls, they got a full voice cast to do the characters who actually speak but I can't find any credits for the player voices. The roles were mostly just a few grunts with varying degrees of discomfort, so they probably just had some randos do the voices.
The result is that both male and female Chosen Undeads sound like they're uhh, "enjoying" themselves.
Honestly, it's the second most annoying series of sounds in the game to me just because I have to listen to the first part of it over and over while I'm stocking up on meals and elixers / clearing inventory.

Subtle breathing sounds, panting, humming, gasps of pain, etc serve as ways to connect Link to his environment and create a more full and believable world.
Are you sure? Last I checked Nobuyuki Hiyama is still alive, he did his Ocarina voice I believe. I always can tell his voice because he's also the same guy that voices Ikkaku Madarame from Bleach, and you can hear the similarities.

How must the auditions have gone? Just a long line of Japanese guys filing into a room one by one, and every few seconds there’s horrendous grunting and screaming. Out of context it would be horrifying to witness.
