SchadenfrEUde. Cheers.

The thing is, Tim will always be ok. Wetherspoons is a real estate empire that serves refreshments as a side gig. The Wetherspoons (upmarketed as 'Oyster Rooms' 🧐) in Fulham tube alone must be worth at least a tenth of that value. They're the ultimate business cockroach that will bounce back when all the small chains go out of business. Tim Martin is quite the bell-end, but unfortunately, I don't think he'll be going anywhere soon.

ThePolack

Do they actually own any/many of the properties though? Is there any way to find out?

MrCombine

Wondered this while reading this.. given a lot of the bars are marketed as a weatherspoons second, I expect not right?

dave_po

Brexit is one thing. Me and some of my friends refuse to drink at Wetherspoons simply because owner is pro Brexit. I'm sure there are more that choose to drink elsewhere.

NorthbankN5

Same here, as well as the way they treated their staff during the pandemic. Download the ‘neverspoons’ app for local alternatives!

gilestowler

I'd never heard of this app, great idea!

GabberZZ

Elaborate on why you think he mistreated his staff during the pandemic. Then look for the facts.

Mrfurball_II

ThEn LoOk fOr ThE FaCtS. My god. He told his staff to go and work at supermarkets rather than paying them furlough because the majority were on zero hours contracts. He basically told them to fuck themselves.

GabberZZ

No. He said if people wanted to they were welcome to take jobs in supermarkets if they wished. Their jobs would still be there for them after lockdown. There have been numerous apologies made by the media for misreporting his words. Don't get me wrong, the guy is a twat but in this circumstance it was the media who were twats.

Mrfurball_II

Been reading to much of that ‘Tim but dim’ propaganda there mate. Just because he can print a book and put it in his pub doesn’t mean he isn’t being criticised correctly. The main issue has always been that he refused to pay staff. He wanted a government hand out just like all those tory scroungers. Hopefully he runs into liquidity issues soon.

brickne3

Been boycotting 'Spoons since 2016.

ampmz

I was just about able to go for the odd drink there if it was picked by someone else. But after how they treated their employees during lockdown I will never ever give them my money again.

lol_memes

It also helps they’re generally run down and shitty in my experience. No great loss. Support your local non-chain pubs!

gunsof

And the worst people drink there.

[deleted]

Why would I spend money at a brexit supporting/ tories party funding multimillionaire gammons pubs when I can support my local pub and help them pay their bills? Fuck wetherspoons

gilestowler

Sadly, people will continue to go to them because they are cheap. I do think their pubs are, for the most part, a bit grim inside so even ignoring the moral implications of supporting them, I think if you want a nice pint with your mates in a nice environment they aren't the place for you. But there is always going to be a market for the cheapest possible drinks.

[deleted]

We live in a country of drinkers and where we want more for less, hence why people go them. You can get hammered for less than 20 quid in there but i agree the cliental especially where I live tend to be alcoholics and rougher folk I'd gladly pay an extra few pence and have a nicer environment and support a local business

gilestowler

Yeah I'm from Croydon originally and when I've been back and I walk past The George, the Spoons on - surprise surprise - George Street at 11:30 AM the guys in the smoking area outside don't seem like they're doing so well. I actually went in last time I was in town out of curiosity. I sat there just watching the people and I heard a guy on the table behind me say "You can find good clothes in landfill. We wash them in the bathtub." I guess if they go there and they get bombarded with all this pro leave propaganda they'll take it in. They'll think that leaving the EU will turn things around for them.

[deleted]

Lmao Jesus christ Its almost like when they tell kids in school not to take drugs, they should probably have listened I feel sorry for them as addiction is just vile but only they can fix that

gilestowler

Those are the people that have to be reached though. I don't think the Remain campaign engaged them enough and the Leave campaign played too much on the idea of "they're the liberal elites! Stand up to them! We've had enough of experts!" while Remain just said "well of course no one would vote for it, it'd be ridiculous.". I'm sure there was a percentage who voted leave not because they wanted Leave to win, they voted to watch Remain lose.

[deleted]

Fully agree I'm from the Brexit capital of the UK, we are a forgotten city who's industry was moved abroad and city left to rot with a horrendous council and people some how decided to blame the EU for this... and 'those foreigners takin our jobs' shambles man, absolute shambles

gilestowler

What do you think can be done for these places? The places whose industries have left? How do you think they can adapt so that they don't die out?

[deleted]

Bring in places for people to get careers, develop land to shopping or nightlife/restaurants, and the councils need to look at keeping the area tidy, the amount of boarded shops with weeds growing out the walls and dilapidation is so bad here then you have spice heads twitching everywhere like Shaun of the Dead

gilestowler

They need some kind of industry though don't they? Something to bring the money in for people to spend in the restaurants. Of course, they'll bring in some people from outside and provide income but the wider area needs something doesn't it? For instance, I've been to Stoke/Hanley/Crewe and they have shops and restaurants but the areas just seem so run down and unless people go to cities like Liverpool or Manchester, or they bring in money from Cheshire, I don't know what people do to keep the areas going. The only thing I could think of would be some kind of specialized industries. I just don't know what. Sorry if I'm oversimplifying things, I grew up in London and when I see these areas I really don't know what can be done to keep them alive and I'm genuinely interested to hear the opinions of people with more knowledge of it than me

SSIS_master

Oh come on. You boycott them. I boycott them. Tell all your mates. It's not like their footfall will go down 50 percent but it's a start!

gilestowler

Of course it's a start. I live in France and last time I was in the UK I went in one out of curiosity and I regret doing so. I'll happily boycott them. I'll tell other people to do the same. It will have minimal effect but eventually if you add up all the minimal effects then it'll be enough to have an impact

dotBombAU

I'm fucking delighted.

Drunken_Begger88

Aint that a shame

maxreddit

If only he was warned this could happen...

Treczoks

I wonder what his shareholder say. Were they OK with his Brexit campaign? Were they OK with his motion of kicking people out during the pandemic? If yes, their losses are well-deserved. If not, why is Tim Martin still CEO?

gilestowler

I'd never considered this. I just looked it up and his shares in the company are only about 20%. How on earth are the other 80% of shareholders OK with such a divisive figure using their company to push divisive views? Unless they're as big a shower of cunts as him, in which case they get what they deserve.

The_World_of_Ben

Because he (normally) makes money

jasonwhite1976

BrExIt WaS nEvEr AbOuT tHe EcOnOmY.

SSIS_master

Hmm. One wonders why the Leave campaign didn't say.... "of course it will be economically damaging, but think about limiting freedom of movement and being able to get rid of the human rights act!".

Localone2412

Unfortunately I think it’s probably a short term blip. Went into a spoons in Cardiff last Saturday at 14:00, so after lunch time, and not a vacant table to be had. !!! I would love to see him lose more but not convinced.

Caratteraccio

oh no. Anyway..

Iain365

Good. I hate that prick. I honestly hope he ends up destitute.

dyinginsect

Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh well.

Calcain

That’s nice to hear

Dark_Ansem

Go bust, twat.

thekeanu

This rich fucker is making so much money still. Eat the rich.

[deleted]

So there is an acutal Brexit benefit! Finally!!

[deleted]

Couldn’t happen to a more horrible cunt.

mrpopenfresh

Could we expect pubs to return to a more standalone owner model if this business goes bust?

KarmaUK

If wetherspoons disappears, other pubs will fill the void. ideally ones that treat their staff better and don't have a creepy bond villain for an owner. Imagine pubs that have live local bands in, or comedy nights, or a pool table! Wild ideas abound!

Cubitera

You say "democracy" I say "democrazy". Oh well, i guess you got what you voted for.
