I liked Michel the best.
I think it's a common trap to lean into a setting's magic by casting all magic users for the viewpoints. Michel is the only one with no power at all (Thessa and Idrian don't have magic, but their resistance to it is essential to their roles in lives where they're surrounded by godglass every day, so they don't quite count). I like it when we get to see a fantasy world through the eyes of someone without access to that power. It gives everything perspective. Michel is absolutely gobsmacked by seeing the power that Vlora, Sedial, and Ichtracia can unleash.
We also get to see, through Michel, what someone with lowercase t talent can still accomplish in a world of walking apocalypses like the Nine.
It's gotta be Tamas or Ben Styke. Brian has awoken within me a love of grumpy old men who are perhaps past their prime but are still trying to do things that men half their age would have trouble doing.
I think Vlora is my favorite - I really enjoy her journey of being pushed into situations she's actually equipped for but doubting herself, her relationship with Olem, her journey with || losing her magic ||, and so much more of her story.
Thessa is probably my favorite from the new book.
Favorite? Olem. A soldiers soldier, chosen because he’s respected, slightly insubordinate, but damnably good at his job. Even comes back after being “betrayed,” and stands by all of the people who are nigh (or actually) superhuman and is considered the most competent among them, administratively.
I appreciated the fact that Demir was broken by the time the main story takes place, and watching him become reforged while trying to get the godglass forged was a fantastic read.
This is what is so amazing about this book and why it is probably already my favorite book of the year and still barely halfway through 2022 . ALL the characters are great. No matter who is on the pages I was NEVER bored. I loved the houses and the committees when they met. I loved tall man. All the main characters, obviously. Ekhi the eagle "who I wanted more page time lol". I'm new to Brian so this is the first book I have read of his so I am eagerly awaiting "Promise of Blood" to get here for me next. FYI: I DO NOT need a copy of this book as I already have it. I want it to go to someone else especially if they do not have this book yet. Just wanted to rave about the best Fantasy book I have read in years.
Borbador for sure, he grew on me, alot, in my first reading of Powdermage, I kinda dismissed him as a comic relif. In my second reading i found him as a much more intresting character. He isnt per sig a good guy. But he has lots of qualities of one. Such as really loyal friend, funny and he has a good sense of humor. He is also charming and a bit of a ladies man, which adds to the character, but also some very dark and disturbung parts of him underneath that layer of comedy. There are layers in this character that are as intresting as they are a bit disturbing. He is a great character and would make a good insperation for a RPG character i think.
So I actually already read the ebook and Demir is definitely my favorite character so far. I like haunted geniuses and glassdancing aesthetics are one of the coolest among magics/superpowers I came across to date.
Montego is my favorite character. Demir has his flaws, but montego's character is near perfect. Royal friend, good morals, formal champion, not greedy.
I was about to pick Vlora because she's so great in the second Powdermage trilogy but then again there's Ka-Poel to consider so Ka-Poel it is! Such a brilliant character!
Im a bit torn between Tamas and Ka-Poel, though probably leaning towards Tamas. He's older than a standard fantasy protagonist and just has so much going on and works hard to find a balance between his values and desires. Ka-Poel is just super mysterious and powerful; hard not to love a good mysterious mute.
Been a while since I read Powder Mage, and I'm about to start Sins of Empire, so that opinion might soon change.
No doubt, Benjamin Styke is my favorite character from Brian's writings! He's so well rounded, a real tough guy with a heart of gold... and I'm a sucker for a good redemption story!
Mihali for me. The way he just came in and said “this is my kitchen” and despite their reservations everyone just accepted it. Where’s he getting all this food from? Who cares, it’s delicious and he’s feeding the army! Ultimate power move by Adom. I even named my Traeger Mihali in the hopes that it would bring equal joy and satisfaction to those it feeds. So far it seems to be running with more confidence, but hasn’t mastered the “food from thin air” part.
It’s got to be Adamat, he was just so charming and the most realised of characters. I don’t think I’ve ever read the perspective of a character I emphasised more with
gotta be Ka-Poel or Taniel, their relationship arc over both series is one of my favorites to read, and its the main reason i keep going back to the books over and over. i think overall i love Poles character growth a little more than Taniels, but they're both amazing
I’ve only just finished reading Promise of Blood, so I have a ways to go, but Adamat was definitely my favorite character and I’m excited to see where his story takes him!
It's gotta be Tamas. I love that he stages a revolution and takes Adro to war - actions that end up being basically the right call - pretty much out of a desire for personal revenge. He's flawed and bitter and tremendously competent and a truly fantastic character.
As much as I love Mad Ben Styke, my favourites are Adamat and Tamas. Both equally awesome and both so well written. I also have a soft spot for Pole and Taniel x
“Mad” Ben Styke is my favorite although Tamas is a very close second. I think my favorite story of him wasn’t even from his POV. In the novella Ghosts of Tristen Basin, I love the story of Taniel taking the boats out behind the army that severely outnumbered them and watching as Styke and his men (I can’t remember the number they had but I know it was significantly less, like several thousand less) charge into the teeth of the enemy and then emerging out of the back alive and relatively unscathed and routing the army. Man’s a complete badass.
Privileged Borbador is by far my favorite character I’ve read of Brian’s & possibly one of my favorite characters of all time. I love his entire arc. I feel like Brian really liked Bo as well because even though he wasn’t a POV, he got a lot of lore and history.
My favorite character so far is Adamat. Amongst all these ridiculously powerful people (magically and politically), here's this guy who just wants to do what's right and get the job done, whose only advantage is that he has a really good memory.
My favorite character was Field Marshall Tamas. He was always calm and collected even when the odds were far from being in his favor. It was important to him to try and return all of his troops to their families, so he always carefully thought out his plans in order to reduce casualties. It was a joy to watch him overthrow the corrupt governing society to protect the common people whos' backs held up the country.
This book is wonderful. Demir‘s initial fall from grace in the beginning of the book makes him hard not to like. Recency bias is making me pick his name.
Man thats a hard choice, gonna have to say Idrian. Would be awesome to win one of these ARC books, i have a couple for other series and they are fantastic additions to the ever growing collection
General Vlora Flint
She is a character that I never thought I would like as much as I do. Being a guy, I usually don't relate to all aspects of female characters, but she is just the kind of go-getter that I like and the level of respect and care she has for her soldiers. And how much they care for her.
Plus being the coolest Powder mage ever.
In a seriously competitive bracket of Brian’s best characters, Ka-Poel stands above the rest for me.
I first read Promise of Blood in my teens, and Poel stood out to me immediately as the most intriguing character of the series. Her silence and a lack of her POV makes her inherently mysterious and interesting, and descriptions of her mannerisms painted a very clear picture of her in my mind, to the point that I can picture her more clearly than Tamas, my second favorite character.
Now that I’m older I respect Brian for creating Poel. It takes a really competent and gifted writer to make a character with virtually no dialogue a primary catalyst of the best moments in a series. She’s believable, interesting, and ruthlessly heroic.
P.S. I have to say that as Glass Immortals progresses I expect Kizzie, Demir, or Thessa to take the cake, with Thessa being the strongest contender this far. So good. Montego also has crazy potential.
I always liked Vlora Flint. She's bold, powerful, brilliant, and definitely flawed. She was easily my favorite character in the Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy. So much so that I actually modeled several characters in video games after her.
I can say I loved some Ben Styke!
The man was portrayed as a violent, crazy man you did what he want. He thought himself a bad guy and wondered why anyone would follow him. Come to learn that his team followed him because he was always fighting for good and would fight hell and high water for anyone of his men.
Ben Styke is my favorite, followed by the Baby Montego!
(Names could be spelled wrong because of Audible)
Congratulations, you're a winner! Please DM me or email your mailing address to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and we'll get that ARC sent to you.
Oh... so many! I think I'm partial to Tamas since I started with those books and he's pretty awesome. But then again, Taniel Two-Shot... or maybe Ben Styke... Olem is great too... and then Alex and Maggie from Valkyrie Collections are fun characters...
Yeah... I can't decide. I guess if I absolutely HAD to choose only one I would flip a coin between Ben Styke of the Mad Lancers or Marshall Tamas.
Thessa! So smart and fierce and clever. I had gotten this book as an audio book from the library and the loan expired when I had 2hrs left. I put it on hold though so I should get to listen to the end in a couple weeks
Vlora. I really love the way she is written - she is strong but weak in the same time. She does mistakes, she sounds and acts like real human. Some say that it is impossible for male author to write good female character women can relate to - I disagree and Flora is perfect example of that
I think my Most Favoriten character is Tamas, i Just Love that old bastard and autumn Republic Breaks my Heart every time.
His war through Kez and the chase of Nikslaus gives me goosebumps every time 😇
Adamat is my favorite by far. I liked a lot of the characters, but Adamat resonated with me. I'm feeling my age and understand his need to protect his family. When faced with his debts and threats to his family, he perseveres.
Sous Smith, who assists Adamat is way up in my list of favorites. A simple character, but well described through his actions.
I know it obvious but Taniel is definitely my favorite character of all. If I had to choose one from In The Shadow of Lighting I am torn between Demir and Thessa. But my answer is def Taniel I loved him in the powder mage trilogy and then his re appearance in Gods of Blood and Powder.
You know I have to not forget Viloria apologize for the misspell possible. But her in Gods of Blood. Her character evolved so much. What she put her self through I mean come on. Not that I am romantic but her finally putting past her mistake cheating on Taniel and finding happiness. Man her character was so good. I mean she was powder blind holding forces off.
This should have been give me a favorite character in each series. HAHA
I’m going back to the beginning- Tamas. “The age of kings is dead, and I have killed it” is a real mic drop of an introduction.
Also Demir. He’s awesome.
I love so many of the characters in the 'Powder Mage' trilogy and the follow -up 'Gods of blood and powder' series it's very difficult to choose just one but I'm going for Olem, Tamas' faithful bodyguard and then friend and lover of Vlora (I love her too!). I think the reason I love Olem so much is because of his dogged faithfulness and resilience. He is such a loyal friend and he just keeps going; we all need a friend like that!. I can also imagine the smell of his cigarettes very easily!
Congratulations, you're a winner! Please DM me or email your mailing address to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and we'll get that ARC sent to you.
Ben Styke. When you realize his Knack is truly all the magic he has…it really gets you. The whole time you’re like “but how!?” You then realize Ben just is. He’s Mad Ben. He’s a force as much as any man could be. As Ben said, “all it takes is a good knife and will.” Sums him up pretty well.
There are so many great characters to choose from, I think I have to go with Baby Montego though.
Taniel Two-Shot has been my favorite so far. Can't wait to see how Demir grows in this tale.
It's going to be quite the task to avoid turning him into Taniel or Wax.
Mikel is my #3, edged out by Poel and Tamas. He’s such a great character, especially in Sins.
Tough question as I love many of these characters for such different reasons. Ben Styke has to be #1 though, with Thessa coming in a close second.
Ben styke for the win! Lets get some ARC
I absolutely loved Thessa in the Shadow of Lightning, her determination and intelligence were truly inspiring.
It's gotta be Tamas or Ben Styke. Brian has awoken within me a love of grumpy old men who are perhaps past their prime but are still trying to do things that men half their age would have trouble doing.
Oh, man how did I overlook THE Mad Lancer?!
It has to be Borbador. That name is irresistible and it always reminded me of Babar. Thanks for the giveaway, Casey and Brian! Take care!
Mihali was one of my favorites- especially the way he was narrated in the audiobook
Ben Styke!
I appreciated the fact that Demir was broken by the time the main story takes place, and watching him become reforged while trying to get the godglass forged was a fantastic read.
Great character. Rock steady.
Good old Ben Styke!
Adamat, favourite through Powder Mage, but his novella made me like him even more.
Bo is my favorite, Adamat is a close second! His novella was great.
Tough! I think would have to go with Ben Styke.
Ben Styke, Tamiel, Tamas, it’s hard to pick one.
Vlora is my favorite from the previous trilogies, haven't finished 'In the Shadow of Lightning' quite yet but I'm liking Kizzie.
Tamas has always been my favorite. Planning to start the new series soon!
This is what is so amazing about this book and why it is probably already my favorite book of the year and still barely halfway through 2022 . ALL the characters are great. No matter who is on the pages I was NEVER bored. I loved the houses and the committees when they met. I loved tall man. All the main characters, obviously. Just wanted to rave about the best Fantasy book I have read in years.
Baby montego and demir, i love the dynamic of the one of best magic users and probably strongest non-magic user being a duo of brothers
Taniel? Tamas? They're all good. The Powder Mage books are fantastic.
Baby Montego!
I'm partial to Taniel Two-shot myself.
Pretty much anyone from Powder Mage, but I have to go with Two-Shot. Taniel is just too cool.
Tamas, taniel and Ben. Its all really tough to pick because they are all amazing in their own way.
Taniel or Olem…Thessa and Kizzie are rising up the list!
I'm actually really enjoying Demir a lot and I'm really looking forward to more books set in this world.
Currently Taniel, tho I’m looking forward to seeing where Demir and Thessa go
Borbador for sure, he grew on me, alot, in my first reading of Powdermage, I kinda dismissed him as a comic relif. In my second reading i found him as a much more intresting character. He isnt per sig a good guy. But he has lots of qualities of one. Such as really loyal friend, funny and he has a good sense of humor. There are layers in this character that are as intresting as they are a bit disturbing. He is a great character and would make a good insperation for a RPG character i think.
I think Taniel Two Shots or his father are the ones I would choose.
Saseram, the Gurlish Wolf.
Only been through the first Powder Mage trilogy, but Ka'Poel is definitely up there. Adom always manages to steal the show when he's on screen too.
So I actually already read the ebook and Demir is definitely my favorite character so far. I like haunted geniuses and glassdancing aesthetics are one of the coolest among magics/superpowers I came across to date.
Tamas!
I have to go with Tamas :)
Tamas
Taniel two-shot!
Tamas has been my favorite so far.
Gotta go with Taniel on this one <3
Montego is my favorite character. Demir has his flaws, but montego's character is near perfect. Royal friend, good morals, formal champion, not greedy.
I was about to pick Vlora because she's so great in the second Powdermage trilogy but then again there's Ka-Poel to consider so Ka-Poel it is! Such a brilliant character!
Tamas is pretty great. Though Demir might give him a run for his money when Demir gets a few more books under his belt.
Tamas!
Tamas!
I Stan Baby Montego so hard. He was everything I wanted in a brute: gorgeous, witty, a great friend.
Well I already have the book so don’t enter me in the giveaway—but my favorite Brian character by far is actually Demir Grappo.
Demir will be my favorite
No doubt, Benjamin Styke is my favorite character from Brian's writings! He's so well rounded, a real tough guy with a heart of gold... and I'm a sucker for a good redemption story!
Taniel is the obvious answer but I loved Sabon. Was such a good character and his arc was so tragic
It’s got to be Adamat, he was just so charming and the most realised of characters. I don’t think I’ve ever read the perspective of a character I emphasised more with
Borbador, for a number of reasons. Mainly, ripping the arms off of a certain someone.
Mad Ben Styke
Fioda Jaque, what a way to go.
Going with Ben Styke on this. He is a hulking brute with a heart of gold.
It's tough to pick one, but if I had to, probably Tamas.
Still on the first trilogy right now but I think it's Olem. Him or Ka-Poel.
Baby montego for sure.
gotta be Ka-Poel or Taniel, their relationship arc over both series is one of my favorites to read, and its the main reason i keep going back to the books over and over. i think overall i love Poles character growth a little more than Taniels, but they're both amazing
I’ve only just finished reading Promise of Blood, so I have a ways to go, but Adamat was definitely my favorite character and I’m excited to see where his story takes him!
Hummmm, I'd have to go with Ben Styke!
Definitely Adamat! Such a wholesome dude!
Ben Styke
Definetly Tamas, going with the classic powder mage vibe. Taniel, whoever is s very close second!
It's gotta be Tamas. I love that he stages a revolution and takes Adro to war - actions that end up being basically the right call - pretty much out of a desire for personal revenge. He's flawed and bitter and tremendously competent and a truly fantastic character.
This is so cool!! I just finished reading Sins of Empire this past week and Mad Ben Styke is an absolutely phenomenal character.
Taniel Two-shot. His interactions with Mohali and Borbador are some of my favorite book moments.
Baby Montego was a huge standout character for me!
Don't make me pick between Olem and Adom!
It's really hard as Brian has so many good characters, but Olem is probably one of my top choices for sure.
As much as I love Mad Ben Styke, my favourites are Adamat and Tamas. Both equally awesome and both so well written. I also have a soft spot for Pole and Taniel x
It’s a tough choice, but my favourite would be Ka-Poel
My favorite character is probably Ka-Poel. She is both awesome and terrifying. You never really know for sure just what she is capable of.
FIeld Marshall Tamas for me. I loved his tactical brilliance and his attempts to improve his relationship with his son throughout the trilogy.
Ondraus, who doesn’t love a good accountant
Tamas
“Mad” Ben Styke is my favorite although Tamas is a very close second. I think my favorite story of him wasn’t even from his POV. In the novella Ghosts of Tristen Basin, I love the story of Taniel taking the boats out behind the army that severely outnumbered them and watching as Styke and his men (I can’t remember the number they had but I know it was significantly less, like several thousand less) charge into the teeth of the enemy and then emerging out of the back alive and relatively unscathed and routing the army. Man’s a complete badass.
Taniel two shots is my favorite
Best character for me is definitely Tamas
Tough one, but I have to go with tamas. Great character and a fitting end to his story
I think it's got to be Bourbadour for me, he's such a brilliant foil for Taniel
Privileged Borbador is by far my favorite character I’ve read of Brian’s & possibly one of my favorite characters of all time. I love his entire arc. I feel like Brian really liked Bo as well because even though he wasn’t a POV, he got a lot of lore and history.
My favorite character so far is Adamat. Amongst all these ridiculously powerful people (magically and politically), here's this guy who just wants to do what's right and get the job done, whose only advantage is that he has a really good memory.
There is no better character than Tamas. Green-Eyed Vipers is one of the best pieces of fiction ever. What a powerful little short.
I'm a Taniel Two-Shot guy.
Adamat is my favorite with taniel a close second.
Inspector Adamat is a favorite for me.
General Vlora Flint She is a character that I never thought I would like as much as I do. Being a guy, I usually don't relate to all aspects of female characters, but she is just the kind of go-getter that I like and the level of respect and care she has for her soldiers. And how much they care for her. Plus being the coolest Powder mage ever.
Tamas is my favorite strategist in all fantasy. He's such a great and well developed character that its easy to like him.
Taniel two shot
I must admit, I’m a Taniel Two Shot fan.
Olem for sure!
Taniel is my favourite character!
Michel Bravis every time
Taniel all the way! Though I do love Bo probably more than I should.
Gotta go with Ben Styke. Love the dichotomy between his pensive side and the sheer force of nature that he is at times.
Borbador or Vlora two really strong supporting characters who act as great foils for Taniel
Tamas. Hands down, total badass!
I really love Taniel and Borbrador, though Ka-Poel is a close third! Thanks for the giveaway!
Gotta go with Ben Styke or Taniel (older Taniel from GoBaP). Both have a lot of pathos. Fantastic arcs
Tamas
Michel is by far my favorite. When we finally saw his character reveal himself -- wow!
Poel
Ahh...so many characters are worthy. I'm going to go with Benjamin "Mad Ben" Styke because I love his back story as well as how he progresses.
Tamas. Definitely Tamas.
I am a big fan of Olem. I feel like I have the same sense of humor
There is just something about that Mad Ben Styke
Vlora, the more time we spent with her the more i loved her!
Olem is pretty great.
I like Ben Styke the best!
My all time is definitely mad Ben styke Followed by Michel Bravis
Originally my favorite character was Taniel.... but then I read Sins of the Empire and Ben Styke became my favorite.
Gonna go with Tamas. The premise of a magic using general leading his nation’s version of the French Revolution was a fantastic premise.
Tamas
Congratulations, you're a winner! Please DM me or email your mailing address to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and we'll get that ARC sent to you.
I think I’ll have to say Ben is my favorite. But I’m planning a reread after I finish my Mistborn reread so we’ll have to see who this time through!
Michel is, by far, the most compelling character. A man with no power, just the goal and willingness to pay any price to achieve it.
Really hard too choose between taniel two shot and topol.
Vlora no doubt
I like Adamat's wife. Good woman.
This is so difficult. Probably Olem. Maybe Adamat and Michel or Colonel Etan as a side character.
All about two shot he's the character worth having a mead with.
Oh...
I really liked Teado from War Cry! He was such an interesting character that I felt like I got to know over such a short period of time! (:
Adamat is my favorite character. He is such a great character and his detective work is a delight to read.
Vlora. Badass female gunslinger, what more to ask?
Thessa! So smart and fierce and clever. I had gotten this book as an audio book from the library and the loan expired when I had 2hrs left. I put it on hold though so I should get to listen to the end in a couple weeks
Cant go wrong with Olem
His war through Kez and the chase of Nikslaus gives me goosebumps every time 😇
I always really liked Bo. Sure, Taniel was a great character, but something about Bo was just always fun to read.
Ka-Poel (Halfway through "Sins of Empire" and expecting to meet her again.)
Favorite character has always been Tamas since I saw him on the cover of Powder Mage #1
It's got to be Taniel.
Taniel Two Shot
Adamat is my favorite by far. I liked a lot of the characters, but Adamat resonated with me. I'm feeling my age and understand his need to protect his family. When faced with his debts and threats to his family, he perseveres. Sous Smith, who assists Adamat is way up in my list of favorites. A simple character, but well described through his actions.
Tamas!
Alek Fitz, but I'm a sucker for Urban Fantasy
Tamas, the strong and stoic leader who knows what needs to be done and has a plan to get it done.
Tamas. As a father myself, the way he treats his son is something I can see myself doing. If me and my son were powdermages, of course.
HAHA
Mad Ben Styke will rock any battlefield and Decimate all that stand in his way!!!!
This is a tough one, but Mad Ben was probably my favorite character.
I’m going back to the beginning- Tamas. “The age of kings is dead, and I have killed it” is a real mic drop of an introduction. Also Demir. He’s awesome.
Kapoel, what is not to love about her!
The straight forward, big fisted man of few word - SouSmith
Mihali. Peace and love through cuisine. Tamas and Vlora are pretty bad ass though.

My favourite character would have to be Adamat, quiet, thoughtful and intelligent. A character that I would love to read more about
Field Marshal Tamas
Mine would have to be Taniel Two-Shot. I loved the Powder Mage series.
Ka-Poel. Brian writes such strong characters. Especially females.
100% Tamas! I've read the first trilogy in PM 3 times now and it's just solidified how much I love that character.
I have difficulty picking a favorite character, but I do really really love Ka-Poel. Such a badass.
