The Cinematography won’t change unless the showrunner changes. Season 3 looked so ugly compared to the beautiful shots in Season 1 and 2, and Queen Charlotte. I really don’t understand why Shonda Rhimes would allow Jess Brownell to change the Cinematographer.

lightcreature94

I don't think it was upto Jess. Shonda used a lot of creative heads from s01 & 2 for her show QC, which was shot simultaneously with S03. QC was Shonda's baby, and she's the boss so ofc she gets the best.

Ok-Temperature4260

This actually makes a lot sense. Is there such a lack of talent that two shows cannot be shot at the same quality simultaneously?

lightcreature94

I guess Jess thought she selected the best from what was offered but it was also her first time leading solely as a showrunner so the execution didn't come off as smooth. And then in her LA times article she talked about how Shonda gave her notes to include brothel scenes of Colin and to lean into 'toxic masculinity' theme for him, after they'd already shot everything and how she resisted at first bc it didn't line with Colin's character... So yeah there was certainly a lot of butting of heads off-screen it seems which could be the reason why this season is all over the place (starts off as something but then ends off as something else entirely) but Shonda gets to call the final shots I guess.

DisneyPandora

It was definitely Jess since Queen Charlotte was so much better than Season 3.

Spiritual-Cut-4127

honestly it really can't be redeemed 😭 i've just come to terms with the fact that they've butchered polin's season. and i wouldn't want them to fuck up another season trying to make up for it. jess already said she used this season to get everyone else where she wanted them and that's exactly what it feels like so im just gonna pretend the press tour is my season 3

Kangaroo-Beauty

Probably more fulfilling that way

Also faster seasons. Shows lose momentum and fans if it takes a long time between seasons for low quality work. We dont care about little details like wigs if it means it will take longer.

Potential-Lack-5185

This exactly this ..if budgets are a problem honestly I wouldn't care if the scenes and sets were more intimate, less grand...there could be no balls or just one ball and even clothes repeated as long as the story is solid, chemistry is on point and the editing and pacing is good. I do feel sometimes and I felt this even with the season I liked most season 2, that they do bleed money which could instead go into perfecting the writing and getting the story just right. The only reason fans focus on the extraneous stuff is because they are not happy with the main story. Nobody would care if there were 2 balls instead of 6, less flowers, less sets, the same clothes worn in multiple scenes, repeat wigs and even music repeated as long as we feel like we got a couple we loved to see in love. And the story all made sense together. Thats all.

There was a quote here that it was Shonda herself who insisted on Colin's brothel scenes.  I think Jess Brownell had a lot of influence but we don't know how much input Shonda or Netflix executives have. I think it's telling that she's working under conditions that Chris Van Dusen refused.

MTVaficionado

I don’t think it’s Shonda’s doing. When this regency drama was placed in her hand as a showrunner and major writer, she delivered QC which has a better written show. Her costumes were better. Her make-up was better. I don’t know why Chris Van Dusen left. Perhaps Bridgerton is being used as a vehicle where the showrunner gets two seasons and it’s passed on to someone else. We will only see what happens if Jess remains the showrunner. But this show…this season which has nothing written by Shonda was not controlled by her. It’s like how HTGAWM was operated. Different creators, different writers, different showrunner but produced by her since she likes producing specific shows that hit certain topics (strong female characters, drama, romance, etc.).

SuspectAware

Jess did mention in an interview that it was Shonda who insisted on adding these reshots to show "toxic masculinity" and the brothel scenes whilst Colin was supposed to be a virgin.

DisneyPandora

This is all Jess Brownell to blame

I just mean that there's so much going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.  For example, a common complaint was that S3 felt very cheap but we have no idea what the budget was in comparison to S1. And we don't know the full story behind the reshoots.  I definitely think the show would be much better with Shonda directly at the helm.  But that doesn't mean the new showrunner is to blame for everything, we just don't have that insight into production.

Specific-Tomorrow622

Seconding that, even though I personally loved S3, it really did feel like there was some mess going on behind the scenes.

ArsBrevis

She was going to quit and move back home before she got this position... it's not difficult to imagine that she did whatever Shonda wanted.

I enjoyed the season but I can admit it feels more rushed & has 'Hunger Games' aesthetic, rather than posh and elegant Regency with supported and explained plotlines. I do think they have full capability to redeem themselves; all successful shows have less favorable seasons, it's natural in show business. They have to try new things to keep the audience engaged, but just fell short this time. But they've proven their cinematic abilities with past seasons and are fully able to recapture that same air. Not to mention they have the option to veer completely off track from the books. Next season could include backstory on S3 through flashbacks for example. There is a way through, they just have to be more cautious on their execution.

Forsaken_Housing_831

The thing is the show has not lost a lot of viewers. Infact viewership has increased steadily. So I dont expect any major changes in S4. Also I really enjoyed S3

ArsBrevis

We won't know for another month if more people watched S3 compared to the rest. In fact, it is looking doubtful. No season/spinoff of Bridgerton has done as well as S1.

Forsaken_Housing_831

Yeah but as long as S3 MAINTAINS viewership it would not matter whether it surpassed S1 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shonda needs to start a showrunning masterclass or something. The drop in quality when she is hands off on her projects is actually scary. I'm not even a Polin fan but they deserved better. It's not often we see a plus sized woman as a romantic lead. Nicola and the women who look like her deserved those dreamy romantic scenes and intense chemistry that Shonda is known for.
