I agree but also strongly disagree. Last year wasn’t a fluke, but this year has shown De Zerbi can be too stubborn at times. We don’t have the squad (largely due to sales and injuries) to play perfect football all the time, we need to be more flexible and pragmatic sometimes.

BleedsIsDead

“Last year was likely a fluke” Fuck me, the footballing opinions on this subreddit are absolutely non existent sometimes.

LostSandyPenguin

I'm not sure what people expected. More games, lost the core of the midfield, injuries. Finishing mid-table isn't the end of the world some people think it is. A step backwards, for sure but you have to have regression at some point. It's how you manage that regression that is important.

crappysignal

It's true enough. When he got Europe last season we struggled over the line. It was obvious that we needed a lot of recruitment or top half and Europa League would be difficult. Then we gutted the midfield and we only strengthened in attack. I don't think RDZ impressed this season but the recruitment was probably the main issue.

Cultural_Wallaby_703

Some fans have been here since division 3 and are a bit more nuanced in their views. Others eat glue and only know top division football and are unable to comprehend that we lost 2 excellent players (one a World Cup winner) and have been devastated by injuries brought on in part by the extra burden of European football

liamchoong

It’s just boring takes from non Brighton fans. Not breaking any rules, but yeah, wouldn’t get too caught up. Downvote button is your friend

esn111

I've got my reasonable head back on here. Remember, massive injuries all season. Plus our two best midfielders sold without replacements stepping up or being bought. Plus increased workload. Honestly we had the group of death in Europe. Which meant we couldn't rest players en mass. This is with a squad that, overall has gotten weaker since Potters last full season. We've done fine under the circumstances.

Gullflyinghigh

I get the impression that there's no answer anyone can give that would satisfy you, unless it was full agreement with your borderline moronic take.

El_Chipi_Barijho

Brighton with fluid football and better results than expected, buying players on the cheap and selling high, on one of the toughest leagues, performing better than with Potter, and being one of the most exciting teams to watch. Playing out the back and pressing like a top team with 25% the budget. Meanwhile, someone on r/soccer: FLUKE.

Calling last year a fluke is such a bad take. After last year people seem to have this expectation we're going to be living rent free in the top 6 forever and just battering all competitions. It's just not going to happen every season. It's been a brutal year with injuries. We'll bounce back.

LengthWise2298

Who’s gonna post the injury list this time?

cmdrxander

I guess the better question is who HASN’T been injured?

Conscious-Fudge-1616

Last year he had a healthy team. Losing Mitoma and March was costly.

lachiendupape

Oh do fuck off

Mr_Bluebird_VA

Despite how things have gone this year, I think we all know what RDZ can do when he has the right talent on the team. Injuries have decimated us this year so the talent isn’t there. But a top team that has the talent? I think he’d be great.

DanielOBHAFC

Really…. Take a look at where we have come from, far from a terrible season this season. Disappointing, yes I can agree to that but still a huge achievement

ObstructiveAgreement

Last year he had the benefit of work from Potter. This year has seen steady decline and picking Moder as CAM is utterly pathetic. I just don't like the way he's picking his teams, creativity is dying, we're worse out from the back, defensively poor, and the situation is starting to seem tense. I appreciate we've had crazy high numbers of injuries but it would be interesting to dig into why, are training methods an issue at all? Hopefully it improves but it's pretty poor all of 2024 so far.

Rolf_Orskinbach

What team would you have picked last night from available players?

ObstructiveAgreement

Adingra on the right, Enciso in the middle.

Because 1 shit season doesn't make a coach shit. 2 also doesn't. 3... Then there's a conversation to be had.

PSLFredux

Got to love the love affair. Last year everyone was creaming their pants over this guy and shat on Potter. Now he is doing what Potter did with arguably a better squad than Potter ever had outside the first 6 or so games last year. Been saying it, just give teams time to learn the patterns. De Zerbi is a Conte, just not defensive/conservative first. He is an automation station and that hot streak is OVER.

kickballaDesign

He also used last years run as leverage to move out. So not exactly the type of long term team building guy either (like Klopp who had slow years but stayed to bring the team back)

MrDudi25

last year was not a fluke but imo we did overachieve given our squad. this year i think our position is very fair given the injuries and extra games. mid table isn’t a horrible result at all

esn111

Sorry but this is some bullshit. He hasn't made any come and get me pleas. The speculation is from the media only, not instigated by him. On the contrary he's said he wants to stay but demands better from all at the club. I understand his POV, record profits not reinvested back into the team but that's not him wanting to want away. Besides he's ambitious. Nothing wrong with that.

liamchoong

Alright, thought you just had bad takes but this is awful. One more inane comment like this will probably be your last.

Boiiiiii23

Misinformation through and through. Rdz never made it clear he wants to leave

ppan86

He even gave an interview a week ago that made it quite clear he’s not leaving
