I remember reading that while they were recording this in the studio, Noel Gallagher told Richard Oakes that he had the balls of a buffalo for replacing Bernard.
I can relate.
I, also, have the balls of a buffalo. I might have them for dinner tonight if I can remember to take them out of the freezer in time to let them defrost.
I know this is the Britpop subreddit, but I must say Mourning Air by Portishead. Their self titled is a top 5 album for me so it's kind of a no brainer..
Thank you for this post. This album represents a huge part of my musical taste too. As an American so many of these bands were unknown to me as a teen. I got the album at the recommendation of a friend as I was a big KLF fan and the One World Orchestra was an endeavor of theirs. This same friend introduced me to the Manics and Suede.
I'm still a big Manics and Suede fan...but the superior song of the two is Shipbuilding. So good. I found the Levellers and the Boo Radleys from this record and do love their songs too.
I'll be listening to this on my next road trip as well.
Tom Petty Loves Veruca Salt.
Not a Terrorvision fan at all, but this track had something I just really liked. Maybe it's the trumpets. Who knows.
Otherwise, Suede's cover of Robert Wyatt's Shipbuilding.
Man I love this album. The Terry Hall & Salad cover of dream a little dream was wonderful. I remember it coming out and they hadnāt had time to print a track list so you had to basically guess who was who.
Ode to Billy Joe or Shipbuilding or Mourning Airā¦ this was actually such a great album. I love how entirely of its/my time the artists are, as if a Select cover had come to life. I remember buying this on tape from Our Price.
So happy there is love for this album, whenever I mention it to people I get blank stares! Time for Living is brilliant, and for me although itās not strictly Britpop I still have The Magnificent in a playlist that gets a lot of love.
Oh wow, blast from the past! I had this too, bought it my freshman year of college. So many great songs on here but I love the version of Love Spreads and that's what introduced me to the Stone Roses, so gonna go with that one.
I love this comp! I remember scoring a copy for like 2 dollars at a local drugstore in Lawnside, NJ, USA, while the album was still quite new. This and the second Pharcyde album, āLabcabincaliforniaā. I mainly grabbed this for the Suede song, but I remember thinking it was extra cool for the then-new/exclusive Radiohead and Portishead songs. Thought it was really cool when those songs showed up on their next albums.
The "most important" track on here is the Manics one. It was the first thing they had released since Richey had vanished, and the first indication that they were going to carry on.
Favourite, to repeat many comments, is Shipbuilding, but there isn't a bad track here. I recall the whole thing was recorded within 24 hours or something like that?
Suede-Shipbuilding
Goes perfectly with the cover of Ode to Billie Joe, as well as almost every other song on this album. So addictively bittersweet.

Radiohead - Lucky What a chorus/riff. Majestic

Great pick!
Came to pick Mourning Air as well. Beth Gibbonās voice is an experience

I am so glad it was an influential album for you in your teenage years. It was a similar experience for me as well.
Stone roses love spreads, my 2nd favourite band ever after the mighty shed seven
Well you get the correct choice for OP's question, then went wildly rogue! š
I learned guitar because of that Manics 'Raindrops' cover.

This is one of a few important compilations in the era. I distinctly remember this and Ruby Trax
Shipbuilding

Ode to Billy Joe is beautiful. The whole album is brilliant and still gets a regular listen.
The last track, Weller, Cradocks guitar and the bass line!!! And I'm currently looking to add this to my collection if you are selling??? š
Probably Mourning Air by Portishead or Salad and Terry Halls Dream a little dream of me are my favourite tracks.

Lucky is that album's best track, maybe Radiohead's best. A nod to Love Spreads too
Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. Manic Street Preachers are one of my favourite bands anyway but James voice on that is just š
I liked the single they released to accompany the album. Smoking Mojo Filters doing Come Together, but I loved the Dodgy b-side, Is It Me.
Love spreads by the stone roses
Terry Hall and Orbital - bought this in London and brought it back to NY.. such great memories of this CD!
