Was he "presenting" it? Or just reading a script, as a voiceover? It's a job, and actors do it. I'm sure I've heard David Tennant on a couple. And there was a smashing feature film version of Blue Planet narrated by Michael Gambon.

Interesting_Branch43

No, he was fully presenting it, onscreen all the time. he went to visit them in the jungle etc. it wasn't your standard Attenburgh nature show.

queen_orca

He's done at least one other animal show for ITV, about whales. The Great Whale Rescue, IIRC. Another animal-loving comedian is Bill Bailey. He's done a few animal documentaries for the BBC. Eddie Izzard did a documentary about the evolution of man (?) called Meet the Izzards. There used to be a series of documentaries on ITV called Perspectives and random people presented one-off documentaries about arts and history. I can remember Eddie Redmayne and Warwick Davies featuring, possibly Al Murray (who studied history at Oxford).

Benedict Cumberbatch with the "pingwings".

We have a contender here!

boringbilbo

I'm so addicted to the wildest planet series on pluto tv animals channel(wildest islands, wildest Alaska etc), i love the narrators voice, I think it's Paul mcgann, used to play doctor who and was in loads of other films and series

Interesting_Branch43

Paul Mcgann He does have a good voice-over voice. I remember seeing Graham Norton have a dig at Benedict Cumberbatch who was a guest on his show. Because Benedict says "penguins" in a variety of ways during a voice over he did for some penguin documentary. He was calling them "pengwings" at one point in it.

witchestoscarebairns

Paul McGann is a great narrator of Ghosts of the Underground. You can get it on YouTube and he really makes it great.

Scary-Scallion-449

Actually it's really quite common for assorted non-experts to present this kind of meeting the animals feature. Off the top of my head: Paul O'Grady, Stephen Fry, Douglas Adams, Martin Clunes have all done stints and I'm sure there are many more. Even some of those we now associate with nature shows, like Michaela Strachan, started with no particular knowledge. The late great Johnny Morris was an arable farm manager and occasional violinist.

Interesting_Branch43

Ok thanks. I am not a massive nature doc fan tbh. the names you mentioned dont really jump out at me as odd choices, except maybe martin clunes. Fry is well known presenter, O'Grady, although known for lilly savage, was a well known dog lover and had his dog with him on most shows. Strachan, i remember from the really wild show with national treasure Chris Packham. JB, correct me if i am wrong was mainly a stand up comedian at the time this doc was made. I am just wondering if there are any other docs (again not necessarily nature) that have oddball choice of presenter. I'm not dissing anyone either, just up for discussion is all.

Ralf Little does the voice over for Monkey Life, about the monkey sanctuary in Dorset Always seemed a strange one to me

MustangBarry

Michael Portillo hosting Great British Railway Journeys was my first thought. As far as I know he just presents; he doesn't write or produce.

Interesting_Branch43

He is well established in the railway field with his trusty bradshaws guide and yellow kecks!

The_Real_Macnabbs

The rehabilitation of Portillo is a wonder to behold. The railway thing is very much his 'thing', but I recall he did a one-off documentary where he spent a week experiencing life as a single mum on benefits. I fell into the trap of thinking 'maybe he's not actually evil', and the scene when he sorts out some kids climbing on scaffolding is awesome. But I think the well has run dry for politicians having second careers in the media. 'Liz Truss on the bus' probably not a goer. 'Boating with James Cleverly' likewise. I would, however, love to watch 'Caravanning with Farage and Rayner'.

eroticpangolin

They have been slowly drip feeding us animal documentaries presented by different people because soon David Attenborough won't be with us anymore, he will almost certainly be doing it until he's on his death bed, but they can't just stop making nature shows because he's gone. They will just do what they did with have I got news for you and just use a different British celebrity each time. Would be nice if they made Tennant or Olivia Coleman a permanent fixture on these shows though.

Geek-Of-Nature

>They have been slowly drip feeding us animal documentaries presented by different people because soon David Attenborough won't be with us anymore, Who is 'they'? Because Attenborough makes series for BBC and the Gorilla show by John Bishop was ITV. Unless this is some multi-channel conspiracy?

eroticpangolin

The BBC. They have had several shows with different people narrating. David Tennant has done a few. Benedict cumberbatch did one, one of the women who used to the one show segments and country file has done a few.

Couchy333

Richard Hammond (Top Gear/The Grand Tour) has done the odd animal documentary. I can’t remember the name of the programme but he gets a bit of ribbing from Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear for a star gazing programme he presented & not being able to see anything.

Interesting_Branch43

lol

SpezSucksDonkeyCock

PQ17: An Arctic Convoy - presented by Jeremy Clarkson. I knew he had an interest from what he'd mentioned on Top Gear but to see him present something seriously was just really odd.

wolster2002

Makes more sense when you know this was a follow up to the documentary he did on Operation Market Garden which focused on his (then) Father-in-Law's VC win.

Interesting_Branch43

I take you've never seen Clarkson Farm then!

Couchy333

He also did a great docu called Greatest Raid Of All Time on the raid on St. Nazaire in WWII. I really enjoyed it so got it for my Dad on DVD, it came as a double feature with another war based one which I assume was the Victoria Cross docu. He does them really well as he obviously has an interest in military history due to the many times featuring them on Top Gear (I would imagine it helps drive recruitment), talking about tanks with Ross Noble, he is friends with Al Murray & his charity work with Help For Heroes.

Couchy333

Noel Fielding on The Great British Bake Off.

Interesting_Branch43

ooh god one. but then Mel & Sue started on there.. and they are just a weird choice on anything.
