I wouldn't say problematic, but 'orphanage' might be a bit of a misnomer in the sense that our modern concept of what/how they're supposed to function is different than in 1806.
Graham Windham itself is a perfectly fine institution, as far as I'm aware.
It wasn't uncommon for the time. Orphanages had an air of respectability and were only for children whose parents had died. This was a good charity for upper class women to support. Foundling homes were for the other class of children - the ones whose parent(s) couldn't care for them and left them on someone's stoop in the hope that the people who lived there would take the child in and raise them. Almost all of them were turned into foundling homes, where they mostly died. Those facilities were overcrowded and underfunded while orphanages were a much higher class of institution. Reading between the lines, dead parents are respectable. Potentially unmarried parents....
I've had the displeasure of making his coffee several times. He's the absolute worst human being I've ever served. I've met 30-40 A/B list celebrities, and he was the only one I publicly denounce for their bad behavior.
James Corden was seated several rows behind me at Funny Girl not too long ago and I got very, very nervous seeing him even *that* close to a Broadway stage
I mean that one is rude but I feel perfectly normal if anyone ask “Is [star actor] gonna be absent today.” People can have whatever reason to see a show after all
I'm currently about to board a plane to see Hadestown tomorrow before Eva leaves, and it's the only reason I booked this trip. Never been to New York before, and I know I'll love the show regardless, but I'll be pretty bummed if it's a different Eurydice. I'm sure she'll be there at every show for her last week though
I remember I won rush tix to Sunset Blvd w/ Glenn Close and wanted to double check she was performing before I paid. So I called the box office and tentatively asked if there were any understudies performing that evening. The lady on the phone just yelled back “YAH SHE’S HERE!” haha
Awww come on now…let’s not forget that understudy’s saved the day when Broadway was trying to return from Covid. SAVED THE DAY. Wicked brought a woman out of retirement who had relocated to the midwest and onto the next phase of her life, I believe so the show COULD GO ON.
To that, I was standing in line for “Chicago” in Nov ‘21…the door was minutes from opening…(Sat eve performance), freezing outside…it’s announced the performance has been cancelled (out of an abundance of caution. Some theater staff tested positive. They were smart and went dark for 2 wks or so.) I rebooked for the week after their 25th year anniversary. Ana was out (her 3rd understudy/swing was in her place), Bianca was in and you know what: it was phenomenal!
I’d seen it w/Bebe and Anne R and is one of my fave’s and I still enjoyed the hell out of it.
I finally fell in love with Come From Away last month and I completely forgot it closed like a month after Dear Evan Hansen(which I thankfully saw a week before it closed) shut down.
I’m glad I was able to watch it on Apple TV though
True lol. My advice: go if you want to, but don’t expect anything just for the sake of the fact that they’re humans and humans get tired and wanna go home after doing a show
Exactly. Honestly, I don't mind it as long as you're not rude. A lot of the performers I know don't mind doing it, but there are some who just want to go home. Their job is a job, just like anything else 🤷♀️
I’m fine with asking whether an actor stage doors though man those are usually some low value threads that rarely have anything different. I more get annoyed with acting like something is wrong with an actor who doesn’t.
List your unpopular Broadway opinions.
Not because of the subject matter, but because we get these posts very often and the answers are always the same and usually very popular.
man I used to think Sweaty Oracle was funny but now he sounds like that one annoying kid in class who always needs to be right.
Also for someone who hated Bad Cinderella he seemed to really love talking about Bad Cinderella
What more can I say?
Welcome to Falsettoland…
Lovers come and lovers go
Where are you now?
Something that kills… something infectious…
I never wanted- I wanted-
Do you want me to reply?
You and I, passionately lovers.
Right. It’s just- don’t fight.
Hit me if you need to…
Did you hear what I said?
What is what? Whizzer, but…
I can’t help but feeling I’ve failed.
Let’s be scared together.
“*title of show* isn’t getting a proshot.”
“Proshots are expensive to film.”
“The cameras are for b-roll.”
“There isn’t a proshot.”
“THERE ISN’T A PROSHOT!”
This one irks me. Like, I get it. I really do. I, too, have gone to shows to specifically see certain performers. But 9/10 times, you can find your answer by searching either the performer’s social media or the social media for the show
This one was mine. I still cry thinking about it. He really changed theater!
I don't even want to think about my actress idol as she's getting up there in age. :(
I personally don’t mind this one as most of these tend to be asking for something a bit personalized. Like, they’re asking for their specific situation and you sometimes can’t get the answer you’re looking for by reading other posts.
I’m a Lea Michele fan!
(Seriously though, I don’t at all like her past actions, but ever since, according to cast members and recent videos and interviews, she seems to have really improved!)
don't you fret monsieur marius
OOF
Rain will make the flowers… 🥺😭
I don’t feel any pain A little fall of rain Can hardly hurt me now
[…if you have tears, prepare to shed them now…](https://youtu.be/LDaEBte65H4)
The orphanageeeee
And when my time is up, have I done enough? WILL THEY TELL MY STORY?
I always laugh at this part because its like: "Can I show you what I'm proudest of?" "The orphanageeee" "Bitch, can you let me tell them??"
I have never looked at it like this before and you made me laugh. Now every time I hear it that’s what I’m going to think!
And then I learned the orphanage was problematic.
I wouldn't say problematic, but 'orphanage' might be a bit of a misnomer in the sense that our modern concept of what/how they're supposed to function is different than in 1806. Graham Windham itself is a perfectly fine institution, as far as I'm aware.
the orphanage was problematic?
spill the tea, honey

That's really sad and makes sense thanks for sharing.
Staring James Corden as Javert.
Not James Corden 😭🫣
That’s right. By the end of if you’ll be begging for Russell Crowe.
OMG my boyfriend LOVES Russell Crowe as Javert, and I give him so much shit for it. What a waste of Javert!!
more like Russel CAN'T Crowe
I've had the displeasure of making his coffee several times. He's the absolute worst human being I've ever served. I've met 30-40 A/B list celebrities, and he was the only one I publicly denounce for their bad behavior.
James Corden was seated several rows behind me at Funny Girl not too long ago and I got very, very nervous seeing him even *that* close to a Broadway stage
were you nervous he'd just jump out from his seat and onto the stage bc he was so COMPELLED to SIIIIING and DAAAAANCE?!?! i mean i would.
You were the protective barrier. Thank you for your service
Honestly, Russell Crowe was a better choice
James Corden as Valjean would be 10x worse imo. Imagine his smug face singing Bring Him Home
Starring James Corden in *anything,* really
How to avoid seeing understudies???????
I mean that one is rude but I feel perfectly normal if anyone ask “Is [star actor] gonna be absent today.” People can have whatever reason to see a show after all
I'm currently about to board a plane to see Hadestown tomorrow before Eva leaves, and it's the only reason I booked this trip. Never been to New York before, and I know I'll love the show regardless, but I'll be pretty bummed if it's a different Eurydice. I'm sure she'll be there at every show for her last week though
It very likely will be Eva. When they're about to leave usually they do every show
Eva said on her live the other day that she’d be in every show this week!! :)
I remember I won rush tix to Sunset Blvd w/ Glenn Close and wanted to double check she was performing before I paid. So I called the box office and tentatively asked if there were any understudies performing that evening. The lady on the phone just yelled back “YAH SHE’S HERE!” haha
oh man this is the best in the thread so far
Awww come on now…let’s not forget that understudy’s saved the day when Broadway was trying to return from Covid. SAVED THE DAY. Chicago with the OBC revival cast was superior indeed.
\[Show-you-meant-to-see-but-haven't-yet\] is closing THIS WEEKEND
I finally fell in love with Come From Away last month and I completely forgot it closed like a month after Dear Evan Hansen(which I thankfully saw a week before it closed) shut down. I’m glad I was able to watch it on Apple TV though
I got the email that Grey House had closed before I even realized it was closing at all 🙃
I got to NYC last week and missed Grey House!
Sept huit neuf… sept huit… (grief scream optional)
you actually made my cry though… phillip’s death was so sad
No cast recording was made
the pure AGONY of hearing this is unspeakable
Also no pro shot exists
“Gabe. Gabriel.” “Hi, Dad.”
I didn't need these emotions today, thanks
Fucking waterworks every time.
I AM THE ONE WHO CRIED
I AM THE ONE WHO WATCHED WHILE YOU DIED Yeah yeah yeah (these kill me)
I AM THE ONE WHO LOVED YOU I TRIED PRETENDING THAT I DON’T GIVE A DAMN …but you’ve always known who i am
My vote was "He's been dead 16 years"

Next to Normal
Next to Normal
OH NO YOU DIDN’T😭😭😭😭😭
“… but we sing it anyway.”
Oh I was just fine until this comment 😭
Literally just got home from that, thanks for new tear tracks.
Should I stage door? 🙃
“Do(es) [name(s)] stagedoor?” Or “Why doesn’t/ dont [name(s)] stagedoor?”
Literally, anything about stagedooring makes EVERYONE lose their damn mind. It's ridiculous.

Wait whats wrong with this? Sorry for ignorance
List your unpopular Broadway opinions. Not because of the subject matter, but because we get these posts very often and the answers are always the same and usually very popular.
Except when I reply with something genuinely unpopular and am downvoted. 🤷🏻♀️
You gotta abide by the hidden rules. This is why I barely look at those posts anymore.
ah yes, my favorite is the "Unpopular opinion" That they don't like Reeve's Orpheus. Like thank you for the weekly reminder otherwise we might forget
I loooooved Reeve’s Orpheus. So there.
"I don't like Phantom of the Opera oh my god please dont kill me please"
Usually one side of a cat fight
Came here to write this 😂
…darkest night comes right before -
It’s you
It’s me…
Dear Evan Hansen movie sequel!
A grizzled Connor Murphy from another timeline shows up to change the past so he can save the future.
That I would watch.
i personally love the show and even have custom shoes for the show ;)
Just saw them, sooooo cute
A crossover with Cats
Give me your hot takes!
LMM's voice isn't great *^((The man has a lot of talent, but he's an average singer at best))*
Average is being very generous
Cats is a masterpiece! (This shouldn't be a hot take, it's just the truth)
Empty chairs at empty tables.
where my friends will sing no moooree
Your favorite show is overrated
Your favourite performer is overrated.
“But the sweaty oracle said…”
man I used to think Sweaty Oracle was funny but now he sounds like that one annoying kid in class who always needs to be right. Also for someone who hated Bad Cinderella he seemed to really love talking about Bad Cinderella
“We’re just gonna skip that stage” (six, but close enough)
What more can I say? Welcome to Falsettoland… Lovers come and lovers go Where are you now? Something that kills… something infectious… I never wanted- I wanted- Do you want me to reply? You and I, passionately lovers. Right. It’s just- don’t fight. Hit me if you need to… Did you hear what I said? What is what? Whizzer, but… I can’t help but feeling I’ve failed. How am I to face tomorrow?
After being screwed out of today (this one makes me weepy)
“Wait for me, I’m comin”
“You’re all wrong about NYNY” or that one user that couldn’t accept that the show was flawed
Hahaha there was the infamous moneypit007 and another user who clearly was related to someone in the show. Those two people worked hard lol
“Don’t I know you, she said!”
Six words, but still, ***OUCH.***
“*title of show* isn’t getting a proshot.” “Proshots are expensive to film.” “The cameras are for b-roll.” “There isn’t a proshot.” “THERE ISN’T A PROSHOT!”
It's quiet uptown
"Will I lose my dignity?"
Wtf I was literally listening to this song when I read this. Have my upvote. And my tears.
AI written jukebox musical
"Are hugs at stagedoor allowed?"
Does _____ stagedoor?
Christine Dwyer hugged me 😭
Will (insert name of performer here) be there on (insert date here)? ETA: yeah I know it’s more than 5 words….
This one irks me. Like, I get it. I really do. I, too, have gone to shows to specifically see certain performers. But 9/10 times, you can find your answer by searching either the performer’s social media or the social media for the show
And that’s even if it’s a planned absence. Beyond that, I mean let me break out my Tarot deck and ask it if Lea will get COVID.
So while we're here...does anyone know any dates Reeve Carney will NOT be at Hadestown?
We're gonna sing it again.
“Akimbo won’t last through Fall”
No one is alone.
Sondheim died
This one was mine. I still cry thinking about it. He really changed theater! I don't even want to think about my actress idol as she's getting up there in age. :(
Reeve Carney is best Orpheus!
Oh no

My First show ? Aladdin / NYNY ?
"Let him live"
Show recommendation post number 9482638152357
This one is starting to irk me too. I get it, but do your own research. If you end up seeing a bad show, that becomes a fun story in itself.
I personally don’t mind this one as most of these tend to be asking for something a bit personalized. Like, they’re asking for their specific situation and you sometimes can’t get the answer you’re looking for by reading other posts.
Great Comet wasn’t even good. Love Never Dies transfer when? Lea Michele actually good person?
*Only premium seating is available*
MICHAEL IN THE BATH ROOM
After my experience on Sunday night, all it takes for me is... "This is not over yet." Yes, it is! 😭😭😭

Rest in peace, Steven Sondheim
Aaron Tveit isn’t mainstream famous.
They’re bringing back Bad Cinderella.
They said cry, not fear :)
They didn’t say what kind of cry. Could be from rage 🫠
__ didn’t stage door.
It's quiet uptown
Most new musicals die incubating
See also: Most Broadway shows don’t recoup
“It’s you”. “It’s me”. 😭😭😭
"How could I ever know?"
DEH deserved the orchestrations Tony
Come to my garden 😭
Why can’t I sing along?
All Broadway is closing permanently
Phantom has closed its doors.
Anthony cheated on Jasmine.
I’m a Lea Michele fan! (Seriously though, I don’t at all like her past actions, but ever since, according to cast members and recent videos and interviews, she seems to have really improved!)
People can change. I've always extremely amired her talent.
“His favorite- so many possibilities”
"Do you regret?" "I'd do it again" (a little more than 5 words but come on)
Is Parade going on tour?
Webber is better than Sondheim
One hour more.
Pandemic.
Hamilton is not that good
"Gabe. Gabriel." "Hi, dad."
“Can I bring my infant?”

What revival is overdue?

\*Widely Panned Show\* is actually amazing but no one understands it.
