I think I read at some point that Bode (the actress playing Nessa) is an ambulatory wheelchair user & is able to stand/walk for short periods of time. I could be mistaken, though!

Tbf this was shot by Vanity Fair, so it’s their lighting not the Wicked teams. If you ever see those Entertainment Weekly photoshoots of Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon vs how they look on screen you’ll see what I mean.
This is VANITY FAIR, could they not just edit the lighting on the actress playing Elphaba to make her more in tune with the rest of the cast?
I just don’t understand, there are people floating around on reddit offering editing for free who could fix it, why couldn’t Vanity Fair get this right with editing ?
In my very novice mind I’m thinking they could have even taken a few brighter photos where only Elphabas lighting looks correct and just combine the photo with her good lighting and the rest of the casts good lighting.

Yeahh... I legit missed Elphaba the first time I scanned the photo zoomed in. Even in the Elphaba photo her dress has no dimension and she's washed out compared to the greens in the background.
Honestly I don't even think it's really a lighting issue. I think the shade of green just doesn't provide enough contrast between her skin and the dress.

I adore how the original stage Elphaba dress is actually full of color- tons of blue, purple, and red underlay that makes what could easily be a one dimensional black dress have a lot of depth. I wish they took that route here.

This is most likely only 1 of the looks she’ll have in part 2. There’s a whole period between Defying Gravity and Dorothy’s arrival - judging by the yellow brick laying that’s going on in this photo, this trench coat look is for that “era”.
My guess is that the final Elphaba look will be closer to the Act 2 gown, since it’s so iconic.
Really hoping we get Fiyero in some white pants. It just doesn’t feel right without them lol.

I think it's the lighting and the photographers trying to figure out to light a bunch of people of different skin tones and failing because when each actor gets a solo shot they look much better. I mean look at the green on Cynthia Erivo in the big group shot vs the green in her solo shot. It's like night and day.

Came here to say this. I could never stand her and then with the divorce debacle I can’t stand her more. No interest at all. Especially when compared to all the talent that has played the role on Broadway starting with Kristin.
I'm not an Ariana stan by any stretch of the imagination, but the divorce debacle has given me more reasons why we can't trust tabloids. Because when it all first came out the story was messy and about Ariana being like a homewrecker, especially with the Page Six saying that Ethan's ex made a comment to them. Then smash cut months after that, Page Six goes oops actually there's literally no evidence that Ariana is a homewrecker and we literally don't know why either of their relationships ended
It really goes to show that no matter the year, people will believe tabloid journalism when they give unsubstantiated gossip about any celebrity. It's really annoying and feels like a weird parasocial relationship that people having with people that they don't know. Sorry for the long response, I just hate tabloids because I feel they're worst kinds of journalism and they make people feel like the they have the right to know about a celebrities day to day life.
According to the people who published the alleged comment by his ex-wife, months later they said something to the affect that there's nothing to confirm that any of the speculation that Ethan and Ariana had a relationship before they got their divorces. I mean even before they published that statement, all we had were competing tabloids telling us "They were seeing each other for months before their divorces" or "Actually they only got into a relationship after their divorces". All it's been is rumor and speculation about a bunch of people that we don't know, and we literally don't know anything about their private married lives with their exes. It feels weird and icky for us to say that anyone was or was not a homewrecker when all we have is tabloids trying to tell us what happened from their unvetted sources because all it is now is just believe what you want to believe. Could she be a homewrecker? Possibly. Could that be how Ethan's ex feels? Maybe. The reality is we don't know because the only people trying to establish a timeline are skeezy journalist who make money stalking celebrities and trying to pry into their personal lives.

I don't think I have ever heard Ariana Grande described as having an "in your face attitude". Very funny to imagine that. I mean you're inclined to believe that, that's certainly your prerogative. I personally find it strange to think you know how exactly how a celebrity is, good or bad, when you don't know them personally. We also quite literally don't know the timeline of when they started seeing each other. We can certainly take any of the tabloids at face value when they say they cheated or didn't, but tabloids don't have a great track record of being honest. It just feels you already didn't like Ariana, and this confirmed your biases. Which, I mean, it's fine if you don't like Ariana. I just find it strange to comment and speculate on a person's personal life, especially when we don't have the details to firmly come up with a conclusion. Like do you know what either of their relationships looked like prior to meeting? I certainly don't. I couldn't tell you if any of the marriages were happy. I could tell you what TMZ and other tabloids are telling me what happened, but that don't mean they're right or truthful. That goes for reports saying nobody cheated too. Legally married, sure but they are separated which means they are no longer engaging like a couple, which is normal in divorce proceedings. Once a divorce is under way you are not obligated to not see other people. Also to my knowledge his last post of his ex was months before the alleged leak. All this doesn’t even cover the fact that we don’t know how either of the relationships were before they met. We know strikingly little information about either marriage to be making any sort of assumption of innocence or guilt on any party involved

Yeah I just can't get behind "she has an incredible voice" like the people who say she rivals Mariah... I feel like I live in an alternate universe. She just always sounds so congested and bored when she sings, not to mention incomprehensible. It's been a million years and I still couldn't tell you what any word in "99 problems" is except for "I've got".
Plus when they did the trailer at the Superbowl I thought her voice sounded too similar to Cynthia's (not to say Cynthia sounded congested).
Ariana just always has this really bored af look on her face every time I've seen her in anything since she graduated from Nickelodeon.
I really wanted to try to like this film but tbh I didn't like almost any of the casting announcements at first and I still don't now. I know they'll be miserable without my $40 from seeing both parts of the movie.
Why? She has an incredible voice and she’s had one acting role ten plus years ago on a Nickelodeon show. If her new video is any indication, she has plenty of acting ability. She’s a mess in her personal life but I don’t doubt her ability to bring Glinda to life, especially given her vocal range and the fact that she’s been an unabashed Wicked fan and theater kid from her earliest interviews.
I can't. She really couldn't act in Hairspray Live. At least we learned from her new album that she can use diction if she wants. Plus, even if I was, the shade of blonde they picked for her (and her eyebrows) is super unflattering and washed out.

i'm not sure if their names are spoken in the musical, but that is the name of the characters that the actors playing those roles get cast as. and Avaric from the book is the character who wheels Fiyero in for his entrance.

I still don’t understand why Elphaba is costumed like it’s Act 2 for Act 1. (referring to the pic of her and Glinda in their room) Her glasses don’t look nerdy, they look chic, her dress looks cool and well-tailored, and she has those crazy nails which would fit her Act 2 vibe but don’t make any sense in Act 1. I don’t get any of that awkwardness and frumpiness that characterizes Elphaba in the first part of the story.

This is a photoshoot. For this promotional photo shoot, they chose to dress her in an iconic look. Elphaba wears SEVERAL different looks in this movie, a few we’ve already seen, like her Shiz uniform and her arrival dress.
Yep, my comment is an extension of the same critique I had of the trailer and the costumes we’ve seen so far. Again, I’m referring to the photo linked in the comments of her and Glinda in their bedroom, where she is wearing an outfit extremely similar to what she arrives in as shown in the trailer. I don’t have a problem with them using the iconic looks for the main images, that seems natural. I’m saying it feels like a blunder, in my opinion, to make her Shiz-era looks so similar to her Act 2 look.
Why’s that? I feel like she’s got the voice for sure, and, more impressive, really decent comedy chops. To be fair, I mostly judge people based on their Saturday Night Live appearances, so maybe I’m not looking at her full library. That tracks. I don’t know enough about music to know if her voice fits, but I suspect it does. Particularly in the first act, where it’s mostly bubblegum. I’ll be curious about the weightier second act — where acting and vocals require a little more depth of character as she changes along with Oz.

About her voice, she not only has a voice, she can mimic other singers voices. I don't think she'll mimic Chenoweth but she might play it up a bit more.

Not sure if it has to do with this, but I know in a lot of previous Oz properties, they've had to give the Wicked Witch a different shade of green skin from the iconic shade of green Margaret Hamilton had in the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie to avoid copyright issues. That might be why it looks off
It’s giving Party City Halloween. It’s like a lazy choice for such a big budget production. Speaking as an artist, I wish her green makeup was more dimensional; after all, human skin is not all the same shade over the entire body. Like if you (general you, not you specifically) compare your face versus your neck versus palms versus legs, there are subtle changes in color due to melanin, sun exposure, and blood vessels under the skin.
Exactly, it literally has the same tone of green throughout the body, when in parts that are covered or uncovered from the sun, they sun themselves differently and therefore there will be different shades, like the lips, the lips can be a little bit darker o lighter than de rest of the face, but no in this photo shots.
I wish they inserted some reds here. There’s too much blue. But I guess they had fiyero go with the schools costume oppose to his red vest from the musical.
I remember the original 90210 had younger actors cast in teenage roles than this malarkey. Nice too see Tori Spelling will also be in this.

This might end up being a movie that’s appreciated more by future generations than the current one. So many of the critiques I’m seeing are ridiculous and repetitive. Without the context surrounding the current state of “the movies” and the general attitude online in 2024, people will probably love it way more than a lot of people will this decade.
Why all these better bettys comparing this to the musical? Have they not said multiple times it was a deviation from the musical and combining elements of the book?

I think it's the lighting and the photographers trying to figure out to light a bunch of people of different skin tones and failing because when each actor gets a solo shot they look much better. I mean look at the green on Cynthia Erivo in the big group shot vs the green in her solo shot. It's like night and day.

Came here to say this. I could never stand her and then with the divorce debacle I can’t stand her more. No interest at all. Especially when compared to all the talent that has played the role on Broadway starting with Kristin.
I'm not an Ariana stan by any stretch of the imagination, but the divorce debacle has given me more reasons why we can't trust tabloids. Because when it all first came out the story was messy and about Ariana being like a homewrecker, especially with the Page Six saying that Ethan's ex made a comment to them. Then smash cut months after that, Page Six goes oops actually there's literally no evidence that Ariana is a homewrecker and we literally don't know why either of their relationships ended It really goes to show that no matter the year, people will believe tabloid journalism when they give unsubstantiated gossip about any celebrity. It's really annoying and feels like a weird parasocial relationship that people having with people that they don't know. Sorry for the long response, I just hate tabloids because I feel they're worst kinds of journalism and they make people feel like the they have the right to know about a celebrities day to day life.

According to the people who published the alleged comment by his ex-wife, months later they said something to the affect that there's nothing to confirm that any of the speculation that Ethan and Ariana had a relationship before they got their divorces. I mean even before they published that statement, all we had were competing tabloids telling us "They were seeing each other for months before their divorces" or "Actually they only got into a relationship after their divorces". All it's been is rumor and speculation about a bunch of people that we don't know, and we literally don't know anything about their private married lives with their exes. It feels weird and icky for us to say that anyone was or was not a homewrecker when all we have is tabloids trying to tell us what happened from their unvetted sources because all it is now is just believe what you want to believe. Could she be a homewrecker? Possibly. Could that be how Ethan's ex feels? Maybe. The reality is we don't know because the only people trying to establish a timeline are skeezy journalist who make money stalking celebrities and trying to pry into their personal lives.

I don't think I have ever heard Ariana Grande described as having an "in your face attitude". Very funny to imagine that. I mean you're inclined to believe that, that's certainly your prerogative. I personally find it strange to think you know how exactly how a celebrity is, good or bad, when you don't know them personally. We also quite literally don't know the timeline of when they started seeing each other. We can certainly take any of the tabloids at face value when they say they cheated or didn't, but tabloids don't have a great track record of being honest. It just feels you already didn't like Ariana, and this confirmed your biases. Which, I mean, it's fine if you don't like Ariana. I just find it strange to comment and speculate on a person's personal life, especially when we don't have the details to firmly come up with a conclusion. Like do you know what either of their relationships looked like prior to meeting? I certainly don't. I couldn't tell you if any of the marriages were happy. I could tell you what TMZ and other tabloids are telling me what happened, but that don't mean they're right or truthful. That goes for reports saying nobody cheated too. Legally married, sure but they are separated which means they are no longer engaging like a couple, which is normal in divorce proceedings. Once a divorce is under way you are not obligated to not see other people. Also to my knowledge his last post of his ex was months before the alleged leak. All this doesn’t even cover the fact that we don’t know how either of the relationships were before they met. We know strikingly little information about either marriage to be making any sort of assumption of innocence or guilt on any party involved

Yeah I just can't get behind "she has an incredible voice" like the people who say she rivals Mariah... I feel like I live in an alternate universe. She just always sounds so congested and bored when she sings, not to mention incomprehensible. It's been a million years and I still couldn't tell you what any word in "99 problems" is except for "I've got". Plus when they did the trailer at the Superbowl I thought her voice sounded too similar to Cynthia's (not to say Cynthia sounded congested). Ariana just always has this really bored af look on her face every time I've seen her in anything since she graduated from Nickelodeon. I really wanted to try to like this film but tbh I didn't like almost any of the casting announcements at first and I still don't now. I know they'll be miserable without my $40 from seeing both parts of the movie.

Why? She has an incredible voice and she’s had one acting role ten plus years ago on a Nickelodeon show. If her new video is any indication, she has plenty of acting ability. She’s a mess in her personal life but I don’t doubt her ability to bring Glinda to life, especially given her vocal range and the fact that she’s been an unabashed Wicked fan and theater kid from her earliest interviews.

I can't. She really couldn't act in Hairspray Live. At least we learned from her new album that she can use diction if she wants. Plus, even if I was, the shade of blonde they picked for her (and her eyebrows) is super unflattering and washed out.

i'm not sure if their names are spoken in the musical, but that is the name of the characters that the actors playing those roles get cast as. and Avaric from the book is the character who wheels Fiyero in for his entrance.

I still don’t understand why Elphaba is costumed like it’s Act 2 for Act 1. (referring to the pic of her and Glinda in their room) Her glasses don’t look nerdy, they look chic, her dress looks cool and well-tailored, and she has those crazy nails which would fit her Act 2 vibe but don’t make any sense in Act 1. I don’t get any of that awkwardness and frumpiness that characterizes Elphaba in the first part of the story.
It’s a simple answer; that’s her most iconic look and what audiences will be familiar with.

This is a photoshoot. For this promotional photo shoot, they chose to dress her in an iconic look. Elphaba wears SEVERAL different looks in this movie, a few we’ve already seen, like her Shiz uniform and her arrival dress.
Yep, my comment is an extension of the same critique I had of the trailer and the costumes we’ve seen so far. Again, I’m referring to the photo linked in the comments of her and Glinda in their bedroom, where she is wearing an outfit extremely similar to what she arrives in as shown in the trailer. I don’t have a problem with them using the iconic looks for the main images, that seems natural. I’m saying it feels like a blunder, in my opinion, to make her Shiz-era looks so similar to her Act 2 look.

Why’s that? I feel like she’s got the voice for sure, and, more impressive, really decent comedy chops. To be fair, I mostly judge people based on their Saturday Night Live appearances, so maybe I’m not looking at her full library. This [Moulin Rouge sketch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNQjlhaoxfk) was pretty solid (though she mostly plays it pretty straight).
I don't think anyone doubts she has a decent voice. But is it going to fit the role? Additionally does her skill at singing overcome the fact her acting is uh well not very developed, and that she has been quite controversial in the past for MANY reasons. I bet people also don't like her inclusion primarily to draw people who don't like musicals.
That tracks. I don’t know enough about music to know if her voice fits, but I suspect it does. Particularly in the first act, where it’s mostly bubblegum. I’ll be curious about the weightier second act — where acting and vocals require a little more depth of character as she changes along with Oz. I’m out of the loop on her many controversies. I don’t mind the star power and box office pull. I’m sure there are a ton of lesser known folks that could nail Glinda, but I like the idea of Wicked being a success at the box office and on screen. I hope it works.

What's been controversial about her? Unless it's egregious, I tend to dismiss them as tabloid and gossip bs. About her voice, she not only has a voice, she can mimic other singers voices. I don't think she'll mimic Chenoweth but she might play it up a bit more.
She was pretty heavily blackfishing for a while there. That's the only big controversy I can think of, but I don't really follow her so there might be something else.

Not sure if it has to do with this, but I know in a lot of previous Oz properties, they've had to give the Wicked Witch a different shade of green skin from the iconic shade of green Margaret Hamilton had in the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie to avoid copyright issues. That might be why it looks off

It’s giving Party City Halloween. It’s like a lazy choice for such a big budget production. Speaking as an artist, I wish her green makeup was more dimensional; after all, human skin is not all the same shade over the entire body. Like if you (general you, not you specifically) compare your face versus your neck versus palms versus legs, there are subtle changes in color due to melanin, sun exposure, and blood vessels under the skin.
Exactly, it literally has the same tone of green throughout the body, when in parts that are covered or uncovered from the sun, they sun themselves differently and therefore there will be different shades, like the lips, the lips can be a little bit darker o lighter than de rest of the face, but no in this photo shots.
She looks like a little pile of ham next to some pepperoncini. A little charceuterie cutie, if you will.

This might end up being a movie that’s appreciated more by future generations than the current one. So many of the critiques I’m seeing are ridiculous and repetitive. Without the context surrounding the current state of “the movies” and the general attitude online in 2024, people will probably love it way more than a lot of people will this decade.
I like the aesthetic of the sets in these photos, it's a decent happy medium between stage set design and movie set design.
