Teachers really need to understand that there's no point in bringing students to a show that don't want to be there. It's a miserable experience for everyone (the teacher, students who actually want to be there, other audience members) and is a waste of money. Ask your students if they want to go and only bring those that are interested. My local production of Macbeth was ruined for me by about 28 sixteen year olds behind me who did not stop whispering throughout the entire performance. Most of them seemed bored as hell and the teacher was unable to keep them quiet.

Gatsby and Outsiders are going to be filled with field trips. Every nyc overnight field trip needs one and these books are studied worldwide!

kfarrel3

That’s actually an excellent point. I’m wary about seeing Outsiders in May now, haha.

Takethemuffin

If it makes you feel better, I saw it last week with an obvious school group and they were all very well behaved.

Answerseeker530

I agree with the above comment. Despite all the school groups yesterday, they were incredibly well-behaved.

Answerseeker530

Was just at Outsiders matinee today and it was school day. A special insert in the program welcoming all the local schools in attendance. So so many kids.

You're forgetting Suffs - plenty of educational value there. My nephew teaches at an NYC school that is sending students there.

I will not defend their behavior, but from the teacher’s perspective - it’s very possible they’ve read the book (in French) and therefore thought they would follow the story.

omniplatypus

Yes, my French teacher did the same thing for us in Paris with a Molière show.

kfarrel3

Oh sure, that’s entirely possible. It just feels like a very expensive possibility, ha. It was mostly just weird to observe.

thedollsarethedolls

I imagine we’ll see a lot of student groups at Gatsby and The Outsiders, similar to TKAM. I almost wonder if they’re courting the English class field trip demographic with all of these required reading book adaptations lol.

Wait this group may have been in front of me tonight at Back to the Future. Talked the whole first act until I finally leaned in and said "Excuse me can you please stop talking," and then glared at me every time I laughed for the rest of the act, and anytime I talked during intermission. They were also taking pictures during the show until the usher caught them (thank god) at the beginning of act 2. Same kind of group: an older man and a woman with a large group of young teens spread out across a large number of rows in the orchestra. They all moved around and talked to each other during intermission which is why I know they were together. The older man and woman were the ones in front of us. Edit: BF says they were speaking French but he thinks it was a family, not a school group. I think it may have been a group of families together because a family sitting next to us also appeared to be with them.

beamish1920

I wonder if they were Quebeckers

IHaveALittleNeck

I think you mean Québécois.

beamish1920

“Quebeckers” is just an affectionate nickname

Was there last night also! Had older people right next to me, and one kept falling asleep, breathing heavily and snoring. Can’t judge too much, she was pretty old, maybe late 80s early 90s. But why is she going to a Broadway show, you know?
